Abstract:As a versatile tool in separation science, cyclodextrins and their derivatives, known as emerging functional monomers, have been used extensively in molecular imprinting techniques. The attributes of cyclodextrins and their derivatives are widely known to form host-guest inclusion complex processes between the polymer and template. The exploitation of the imprinting technique could produce a product of molecularly imprinted polymers, which are very robust with long-term stability, reliability, cost-efficiency, and selectivity. Hence, molecularly imprinted polymers have gained popularity in chemical separation and analysis. Molecularly imprinted polymers containing either cyclodextrin or its derivatives demonstrate superior binding effects for a target molecule. As noted in the previous studies, the functional monomers of cyclodextrins and their derivatives have been used in molecular imprinting for selective separation with a wide range of chemical compounds, including steroidals, amino acids, polysaccharides, drugs, plant hormones, proteins, pesticides, and plastic additives. Therefore, the main goal of this review is to illustrate the exotic applications of imprinting techniques employing cyclodextrins and their derivatives as single or binary functional monomers in synthesizing molecularly imprinted polymers in areas of separation science by reviewing some of the latest studies reported in the literature.

Abstract:How structures fit together is the principal domain of molecular recognition, and current studies are evolving from the host–guest chemistry of ions to interactions between two molecules. Recent advances in the synthesis of sizable concave molecules, especially those featuring convergent functional groups, make it possible to bind smaller convex structures with considerable selectivity. One result is that hydrogen bonding can be addressed in model systems. The present review emphasizes the use of cleftlike structures as a means of probing the forces involved in nucleic acid recognition. The application of such molecules to the catalysis of chemical reactions, particularly those involved in self‐replicating systems, is also described. Some implications for future pharmaceutical agents are suggested as a result of access to synthetic receptors for biologically relevant targets. Molecular recognition, a magic expression in modern organic chemistry, circumscribes the already well known, and, for biochemical processes, particularly important phenomenon that certain molecular structures match and interact with each other. An example is the agonist–receptor interaction. The spectrum of receptor model compounds has been extended rapidly in the past few years, e.g. by cleft structures such as 3, which is readily accessible by reaction of the Kemps tricarboxylic acid with the diamine 2.

Because of the characteristics of chiral scaffolds, biocompatibility,, and various modification sites, the novel functional molecules based on natural products were designed and applied in molecular and ion recognition. Abstract:Abstract The specific interactions responsible for molecular recognition play a crucial role in the fundamental functions of biological systems. Mimicking these interactions remains one of the overriding challenges for advances in both fundamental research in biochemistry and applications in material science. However, current molecular recognition systems based on host–guest supramolecular chemistry rely on familiar platforms (e.g., cyclodextrins, crown ethers, cucurbiturils, calixarenes, etc.) for orienting functionality. These platforms limit the opportunity for diversification of function, especially considering the vast demands in modern material science. Rational design of novel receptor-like systems for both biological and chemical recognition is important for the development of diverse functional materials. In this review, we focus on recent progress in chemically designed molecular recognition and their applications in material science. After a brief introduction to representative strategies, we describe selected advances in these emerging fields. The developed functional materials with dynamic properties including molecular assembly, enzyme-like and bio-recognition abilities are highlighted. We have also selected materials with dynamic properties in contract to traditional supramolecular host–guest systems. Finally, the current limitations and some future trends of these systems are discussed.

Abstract:A captivating challenge in chemistry lies in achieving robust and precise binding of uncharged, hydrophilic carbohydrate entities. Although past decades have provided a variety of excellent molecular architectures tailored for carbohydrate recognition, including acyclic receptors, macrocycles and foldamers, recent advances have highlighted the potential of synthetic molecular cages. These structures are equipped with intricately designed cavities that contain bespoke noncovalent binding sites for carbohydrate interactions. Constructed with the principles of complementarity and preorganization, these cage receptors demonstrate high affinity and exquisite selectivity in carbohydrate recognition through noncovalent interactions, capitalizing on multivalency and cooperativity. This Review highlights recent advances in the design and application of molecular cages with diverse structures, interactions and binding capacities for carbohydrate recognition. In the concluding remarks, we discuss future avenues for further exploration.

Supramolecular chemical biology: designed receptors and dynamic chemical systems

Abstract:Supramolecular chemistry focuses on the study of species joined by non-covalent interactions, and therefore on dynamic and relatively ill-defined structures. Despite being a well-developed field, it has to face important challenges when dealing with the selective recognition of biomolecules in highly competitive biomimetic media. However, supramolecular interactions reside at the core of chemical biology systems, since many processes in nature are governed by weak, non-covalent, strongly dynamic contacts. Therefore, there is a natural connection between these two research fields, which are not frequently related or share interests. In this feature article, I will highlight our most recent results in the molecular recognition of biologically relevant species, following different conceptual approaches from the most conventional design of elaborated receptors to the less popular dynamic combinatorial chemistry methodology. Selected illustrative examples from other groups will be also included. The discussion has been focused mainly on systems with potential biomedical applications.

Abstract:This perspective article focuses on the overwhelming significance of molecular recognition in biological processes and its emulation in synthetic molecules and polymers for chemical sensing. The historical journey, from early investigations into enzyme catalysis and antibody–antigen interactions to Nobel Prize-winning breakthroughs in supramolecular chemistry, emphasizes the development of tailored molecular recognition materials. The discovery of supramolecular chemistry and molecular imprinting, as a versatile method for mimicking biological recognition, is discussed. The ability of supramolecular structures to develop selective host–guest interactions and the flexible design of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are highlighted, discussing their applications in chemical sensing. MIPs, mimicking the selectivity of natural receptors, offer advantages like rapid synthesis and cost-effectiveness. Finally, addressing major challenges in the field, this article summarizes the advancement of molecular recognition-based systems for chemical sensing and their transformative potential.

Abstract:In this review, we summarize recent advances in the development of molecular recognition components based on the biomolecular scaffolds of proteins and nucleic acids for specific recognition of miscellaneous targets. In addition to the widely adopted recombinant antibody fragments, designed ankyrin repeat proteins and modular peptide repeats of transcription-activator-like effectors for base-specific recognition of DNA sequence are also briefly introduced. For the nucleic acid based molecular recognition systems, aptamers, including slow off-rate modified aptamers, DNAzymes, and synthetic DNA-like oligomers for versatile biorecognition are described. Finally, we discuss the remaining challenges and future research directions in the field.

Due to their good selectivity and convenient enviro-responsiveness, crown ether-based molecular recognition motifs have been actively employed to fabricate supramolecular polymers with interesting properties and novel applications in recent years. Abstract:Supramolecule chemistry is an advanced research topic in current chemistry,and the selective synthesis of the host compound is an important aspect. Cyclodextrins and crownethers, which have their own special characters and disadvantages, are both widely used in supramolecular chemistry. The cyclodextrin-crownether coupling system which has two or more recognition sites will expand their applications greatly in the area of molecular recognition, enzyme mimic, chromatography, etc. through synergistic effection with fine results. Here, the recent development of cycloclextrin-crownether coupling system is reviewed. Firstly, the synthesis of different kinds of cyclodextrin-crownether coupling systems is introduced, including the synthesis clues, approaches and methods. Then, the application of the system is emphatically described, including in the field of molecule recognition, mimetic enzyme, isolation of isomers and energy transfer of light. At last, the disadvantages in recent study and prospects are pointed out.

Abstract:Molecular imprinting is an approach of generating imprinting cavities in polymer structures that are compatible with the target molecules. The cavities have memory for shape and chemical recognition, similar to the recognition mechanism of antigen–antibody in organisms. Their structures are also called biomimetic receptors or synthetic receptors. Owing to the excellent selectivity and unique structural predictability of molecularly imprinted materials (MIMs), practical MIMs have become a rapidly evolving research area providing key factors for understanding separation, recognition, and regenerative properties toward biological small molecules to biomacromolecules, even cell and microorganism. In this review, the characteristics, morphologies, and applicability of currently popular carrier materials for molecular imprinting, especially the fundamental role of hydrogels, porous materials, hierarchical nanoparticles, and 2D materials in the separation and recognition of biological templates are discussed. Moreover, through a series of case studies, emphasis is given on introducing imprinting strategies for biological templates with different molecular scales. In particular, the differences and connections between small molecular imprinting (bulk imprinting, “dummy” template imprinting, etc.), large molecular imprinting (surface imprinting, interfacial imprinting, etc.), and cell imprinting strategies are demonstrated in detail. Finally, future research directions are provided.

Abstract:Supramolecular chemistry, although focused mainly on noncovalent intermolecular and intramolecular interactions, which are considerably weaker than covalent interactions, can be employed to fabricate sensors with a remarkable affinity for a target analyte. In this review the development of cyclodextrin-based electrochemical sensors is described and discussed. Following a short introduction to the general properties of cyclodextrins and their ability to form inclusion complexes, the cyclodextrin-based sensors are introduced. This includes the combination of cyclodextrins with reduced graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, conducting polymers, enzymes and aptamers, and electropolymerized cyclodextrin films. The applications of these materials as chiral recognition agents and biosensors and in the electrochemical detection of environmental contaminants, biomolecules and amino acids, drugs and flavonoids are reviewed and compared. Based on the papers reviewed, it is clear that cyclodextrins are promising molecular recognition agents in the creation of electrochemical sensors, chiral sensors, and biosensors. Moreover, they have been combined with a host of materials to enhance the detection of the target analytes. Nevertheless, challenges remain, including the development of more robust methods for the integration of cyclodextrins into the sensing unit.
