Abstract:It is important to study the method of simulating the forest fire spread and evaluate the losses while a forest fire occurred. The model of forest fire extended was established; the method of dynamic simulation of forest fire was studied; the computer program was developed and the spread status of forest fire was simulated and then the area of fire was made sure. Results showed that the simulation has high precision when the wind and terrain's changes are not so much great. It will be useful for fire fighting and computation of fire areas.

Abstract:Forest fire prevention is an important part of disaster prevention and mitigation in China.The increasing understanding of fire behavior and the development of geographic information system(GIS) methods have made computer simulations an important tool for forest fire spread prediction and firefighting.This paper describes a forest fire starting from a point source.After the initial spread rate from the ignition point was calculated,the ellipse parameters and fire spread rate were calculated based on Huygens principle.The results were combined with terrain data in a simulation visualized in a geographic information system model.Fire spread predictions were obtained with and without wind with different fire locations.The results show how fires spread faster on sharp slopes than on modest slopes;and how the wind speed has a crucial influence on the forest fire spread while the wind direction has little influence.

Abstract:ABSTRACT This paper presents a systematical experimental study on eruptive fire over a pine needle fuel bed in trench configuration in still air to elucidate the essential mechanism of eruptive fire. The fire spread characteristics under different slope angles (0–40°) and trench aspect ratios (0.1–0.4) are investigated by a comprehensive analysis of experimental data. The data of fire spread rate and flame depth reveal that eruptive fire is a kind of “sudden accident” that happens when the slope angle reaches a certain critical value. Under such a circumstance, as the flame depth increases after ignition, the fireline intensity increases and finally triggers the fire eruption when it comes to a necessary level. The fire eruption induces a series of changes in burning and fire spread behaviors such as sharp increases in velocity and influence range of the attached flow in the direction of fire spread. Due to the hot gas flow induced by flame attachment, compared to flame radiation, convective heating becomes to play a comparative or even more critical role in fire spread. The influence range of the attached flow increases with the slope angle or aspect ratio of the trench configuration, while for a given terrain slope, there is a ceiling effect of the trench aspect ratio on the fire eruption behavior.

Abstract:An experimental apparatus is specially designed for studying the law of the fi re spread along surface fuels on the ground in forest. By using the apparatus, the fac t ors such as fuel load, packing ratio, etc., can con ven iently be controlled for analysing the influence of them on the fire spread. A great deal of experiments have shown that the fire spreading speed will consequently increase when the fuel load rises, and gradually increase when the packing ratio of the fuel i ncr eas es . Through observing the phenomenon during experiments, the nature of how the factors influent the fire spreading speed has been discussed. . Based on the concept of fire intensity, a seai -experiential estilllated equat ion related to fuel load, packing ratio, and other parameters was set up. According t o some parameter's values measured by experiments, the val ues of flame spreading speeds could be calculated, the calculated results are approach to the values measured during experiments.

Abstract:This paper examines the effects of the slope on the burning and spread process of JP-4 continuous spill fires. Spill fires experiments were conducted on surfaces with different slope angles (0 degrees -3 degrees) in a rectangular trench (0.8m x 6m). The spread and burning behaviors including the spread process, burning rate and flame height are recorded and analyzed. The results indicate that the whole spread process can be divided, based on the burning area variations with time, into four phases: 1) burning layer spread, 2) shrink process, 3) steady burning, and 4) extinguishment. The results also show that a large slope can increase the spread rate and as a result shorten the duration of the burning layer spread and shrink process phases. In addition, it is found that the slope has a more significant effect on the maximum spread area than the steady burning area. The steady burning rate decreases with increasing slope and the ratio of the steady burning rate of a spill fire and that of the corresponding pool fire is nearly constant. The flame height of continuous spill fires is also well predicted by an empirical model with a dimensionless heat release rate and equivalent pool diameter. The experimental data presented in the work will provide a basis for further studies of liquid fuel spill fire on an inclined surface.

Abstract:It is important to investigate the urban and wildland fire behavior to mitigate the fire hazards. There have been many studies on such fires, but the need of real time fire simulations has recent increased and a demand to predict fire spread patterns in urban and wildland regions for decision-making strategies against fires has emerged. However, the knowledge of fire spread behavior is still insufficient, particularly for the condition of discrete fuel distributions. Under this condition the fire spread behavior shows high complexity due to the significant interactions between the radiation, conduction and convection heat transfer, especially under significant ambient wind effects.This paper investigates urban and wildland fire spread behavior by utilizing CFD simulations for two types of fuels under the effect of wind. A 15x15 square array, consisting of 225 fuel sources, is used to simulate the discrete fuel distribution, with varying fuel spacing and wind speed. The simulation method is similar to that used in our previous study, but with different ignition heaters. The comparison of the simulated results for the reduced and real scale models is reasonable, as verified by the similarity law. The critical fire spread distance, the wind effect upon fire spread, and the variation of fire spread rate for the two types of fuels are extensively investigated.

Abstract:This work investigates the fire line evolution in canyon fire spread by analytical and experimental means. The purpose is to understand the mechanism of fire spread acceleration associated with eruptive fire in canyon terrain. A symmetrical model canyon is used for experiments, and in each test the fire is initiated by a point ignition using dead pine needles as the fuels. By experimental observations and data, three distinct types of fire line contour are identified under different central slope angles (the angle between the canyon centerline and the horizontal ground), resulting in different variation modes of rate of spread along the canyon centerline. It is found that the trace of fire head deviates from the line of maximum slope for non-zero central slope angles, and such a deviation increases with increasing central slope angle. The fire spread acceleration associated with eruptive fire occurs when the central slope angle reaches a certain critical value. Experimental data confirm that under higher slope conditions, the significant interaction between the two lateral flame fronts induces marked convective heating ahead of the flame front, which is inferred to be the potential mechanisms of eruptive fire in canyon topography. A model analysis further elucidates how the deflection of the trace of fire head, induced by the fire interaction effect, influences the acceleration of fire spread under higher slope conditions.

Abstract:Liquid fuel is widely used in industry and transportation. Liquid fuel leakage usually results in some spill fire accidents. In this paper, the effect of slope on the spread and burning behaviors of continuous spill fire from a point discharge source was studied by experiments. The flame spread rate, burning rate, heat convection at the bottom surface, flame feedback radiation, and flame height were analyzed. The results show that the spread area has an increasing trend with the slope, and the length of the spread area increases obviously, while the width of spread area shows an opposite trend. Moreover, the burning rate and the flame height of the steady stage decreases significantly with the slope increase, which can be attributed to the increase of heat convection between the fuel layer and bottom for the larger slopes. Subsequently, a burning rate model for the steady stage is built considering fuel layer heat loss and validated by the current experimental data. This work can provide guidance for the thermal hazard analysis of liquid fuel spill fires from a point source.

Abstract:Elucidating the characteristics of continuous oil spill fires for different slope conditions can provide important theoretical support for the prevention of, and rescue strategies during, oil spill fire accidents. For this research, we conducted experiments to observe the spread and burning process of continuous oil spill fires under different slope conditions. The changes in physical attributes, such as flame spread rate, burning rate, heat convection at the bottom surface, and flame feedback radiation, were analyzed for the different slope conditions. The results showed that the shrinking phase becomes difficult to see, and the steady phase disappears when the slope increases in the spread and burning process. When the slope increases, the spread speed and spread area increase, and burning rate decreases. Compared with a non-burning process, the resistance to spread decreases in the burning process. We show that the slope directly affects the spreading process, and indirectly affects the burning process.

Abstract:Trench fires on sloped terrain are always complicated due to the corresponding flame dynamics and heat transfer mechanisms. Flame attachment may increase the rate of fire spread (ROS) by enlarging the heating area of unburned vegetation. In addition, variations in radiative and convective heat flux are of great importance to fire behavior characteristics. In this work, trench fire tests under different slopes (θ) and inclined sidewalls (A) were performed by numerical simulations based on the Lagrangian Particle Model (LPM) and Boundary Fuel Model (BFM) in the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) and small-scale experiments, and the ROS, flame characteristics, and radiative/convective heat flux of the fire front are discussed in detail. The results indicate that the flame tends to adhere to the fuel bed with increasing slope angle and sidewall inclination. In particular, the flame becomes fully attached with a greater pressure difference than the buoyancy, which is caused by the unequal air entrainment between the front and behind the flame. When A = 90°, the critical slope angle of the flame adhesion (from slight tilt to full attachment) is identified as ~20°. The ROS (θ ≤ 15°) predicted by the BFM and LPM are closer to the small-scale experiments. The heat fluxes based on the experiments confirm the predominant mechanism of radiative heat transfer in trench fires at low slopes (θ ≤ 20°). Furthermore, convective heat transfer is more significant than radiative and becomes the main heating mechanism for θ ≥ 20°.

Abstract:Multiple fire interaction is a fundamental combustion phenomenon which often occurs in forest fires and urban fires. This paper presents a systematical study of two identical buoyant fires on a slope in a facility consisting of a slope apparatus and a couple of gas burner systems. The test repeatability is justified for the proposed facility. The effects of fire spacing, fire power, slope angle and burner layout are intensively investigated on the flame merging probability and flame geometry of two interactive fires. The flame merging probability is found to well correlate the spacing normalized by the flame height of no spacing, and the variation of flame merging behavior with spacing can be divided into the consistent, intermittent, and independent regimes. However, the burner layout affects the critical dimensionless spacing that distinguishes the three regimes, due to the difference of air flow field between the side by side and tandem layouts. Data analysis clarifies the effect of slope and spacing on the flame length, flame tilt angle and flame attachment length, and a semi-empirical correlation is developed for the flame height of no spacing.

Abstract:The ignition process of a fire from a point in plain and homogenous fuels bed are analyzed. The growth model of fire spread is studied. The acceleration and rate of fire spread are numerically calculated. The experiment data of the rate of fire spread after ignition were measured in the fuelbed in the laboratory with non-wind. By comparing the calculated result with the experimental data of fire spread rate ,we can find that the growth model is reasonable. In 20 s and between 80 s and 100 s after ignition,the rate and acceleration of fire spread violently fluctuate near the average. According to the calculating results ,it needed about 32 minutes to approach the steady spread rate after ignition. Because of the limitations of conditions ,it is difficult to simulate the whole process in the laboratory.

Abstract:The 2～11 cm wide and 3 mm thick cedar,whitewood and camphor wood sheets were chosen to conduct a series of experiments.The flame height,flame spread rate,flame temperature and surface temperature were measured.Results have shown that the flame height increased with increasing of sample width until the width to certain value and then remained an approximately steady value.For same sample width,sample with higher density resulted in larger flame height.Under negative inclined angles,the flame spread rate differences among samples with different densities were small,and under positive angles,with increasing of angle,the flame spread rate increased and the rate differences among samples with different densities increased.

Abstract:In May 6,1987,a catastrophic forest fire took place in Da Hinggan Mountains,which affected more than 1.33×10~6hm~2 of natural forest and produced a heterogeneous mosaic of burn severities and islands of unburned vegetation across the landscape.Due to natural succession and anthropogenic disturbance,after about ten yeass,the spatial pattern of the landscape in this area has changed greatly.In this paper,a typical area was selected as a case study,which is the Tuqiang forest bureau,including two forestry farms,the influence of the fire intensity on the change of the forest landscape pattern was analyzed in a landscape scale.The result showed that:the difference of fire intensity induces the change of natural environment factors such as seed source,soil physical and chemical character,and correspondingly decides the renovating and resumptive measures of forest landscape after the fire,and further affects the dynamic change trend of forest landscape structure.The study aims at offering scientific gist for reasonable management and development of forest resources after fire.

Abstract:In this paper, urban mass fire-spread would be studied and modeled by the authors. Firstly, the authors analyzed the mechanisms of urban mass fire-spread deeply and then proposed an empirical-and-physical fire-spread model. This model is composed of two sub-models, one is the simplified model of fire development in a single building, and another is the model of inter-building fire-spread. In order to simplify the complicated process of fire-spread in rooms, the former sub-model only judges the building's fire stages, i.e. ignition, flashover, full-development and collapse, and estimates their corresponding physical parameters. According to the mechanisms of inter-building fire-spread, the latter sub-model formulates two main fire-spread ways, i.e. thermal radiation and thermal plume heating, respectively by simplifying and modifying pervious theory-based models. Additionally, it also quantifies the weather conditions which have great effect on inter-building fire-spread. Finally, the authors proposed a GIS-based simulation scheme for urban mass fire-spread and employed it in a specific ignition near to Gaoqiao Hospital after Hansin earthquake (1995, Japan) for fire-spread simulation. From the comparison between the simulated results and real investigation it is proved that the models for urban mass fire-spread have satisfying effectiveness.

Abstract:For the physical model of wildland fire spread, errors or discrepancies in the prediction of spread rate may arise from uncertain, imprecise or improper determinations of the model parameters due to unreasonable assumptions, rough approximations, or inaccurate measurements. In this study, a parametric uncertainty analysis is made on a typical model of upslope fire spread that is consistent with many other models in the framework of the heat transfer theory and the major equations of sub-models. The variation ranges of the model parameters are determined based on the experimental data and assumptions, thereby the rate of fire spread (ROS) is used as a target variable of model calculation to evaluate the response of the model to parametric uncertainties. It is found that the values of ignition temperatures and averaged flame temperatures have significant impacts on the predicted values of ROS under lower slopes. Although the impacts decrease with the increase of slope, they are still non-negligible under higher slopes. Especially under lower slopes, the assumed values of both temperatures have significant effects on model prediction. The error in estimating the flame length has a remarkable influence on model prediction, and especially, the flame length variation of the same magnitude results in consistent relative errors under different slopes. A larger fluctuation range around a fixed average flame length results in a greater deviation from the predicted results, while for the same fluctuation range of flame length, the relative errors under higher slope angles are distinctly greater than those under lower slopes. In contrast, the errors for evaluation of the flame tilt angle have negligible effects on model predictions. The flame emissivity has a remarkable effect on model prediction and thus should be adjusted to better characterize the variation of flame intensity under different slopes. Besides, the prediction of ROS is very sensitive to the evaluation of fuel consumption efficiency, especially for higher slope angles. Simulation results indicate that larger heat convection coefficients are required for achieving better prediction results for higher slope angles, which agrees well with the previous experimental finding that with the increase of slope angle, a kind of flame-induced convection plays a more and more important role in fire spread.
Experimental Study on Characteristics of Flame Spread over Wood Surfaces on Plateau

Abstract:To explore the characteristics of flame spread over wood surface on plateau, a series of experiments were carried out in Lhasa(the plateau)and Hefei(the plain), respectively. The pyrolysis temperature, flame temperature, combustion length and burning rate were measured and analyzed. Results show that the pyrolysis temperatures at both altitudes are almost the same, while the flame temperature on plateau is slightly higher than that on plain. The combustion length in Lhasa is shorter than that in Hefei, and both of them increase with sample width following the power laws. Similar to the prior study results, the burning rate on plateau is smaller. As sample width increases, the burning rates at both altitudes drop and their difference also decreases, which means that fire hazards on plateau get closer to those on plain within the scale range of this study.

Abstract:Once a fire occurs in urban green belts, the live foliage of some tree and shrub species with larger moisture content than dead fuel can support fire spread, which poses a great threat to the wildland-urban interface (WUI). Cypress tree is widely used as an ornamental vegetation worldwide. This work aims to study the fire and spread behaviors through cypress trees. Experiments were conducted using three tree heights between 0.8 m and 1.6 m and five values of fuel moisture content (FMC) between 30% and 160%. The fuel mass loss, flame shape, vertical temperature distribution and outward vertical heat fluxes were measured. The results showed that for a given tree height, a small enough FMC promoted the burning process and decreased both the maximum heat release rate (HRR) and the time to reach peak HRR compared to a larger FMC. The tree height correlated strongly with the flame height, while the influence of FMC was much smaller. Then, a correlation between the normalized maximum flame height and the normalized maximum HRR was established by taking the crown height as the characteristic length. Reducing the FMC did not necessarily promote the fire spread and trees with large FMCs can support relatively large flame front spread rates. The effect of the tree height on the radiant heat flux was greater than the effect of FMC.

Medium-Term Effects of Different Wildfire Severities on Soil Properties: a Case Study of Hengduan Mountains, Southwestern China

Abstract:A forest fire can affect most soil properties, lead to severe erosion responses, and sometimes even catastrophic consequence: post-fire debris flows. Five years after a forest fire occurred on June 1st, 2014, in the Ren’eyong basin located in the central part of the Hengduan Mountains, the burned area was still being affected by the post-fire debris flows and flash floods. Therefore, assessing the extent of soil properties recovery is very important for predicting the development impact of wildfire-induced geological hazards. We tested the selected soil properties: soil moisture content (SMC), dry density, total soil porosity, soil organic matter content (SOM), saturated hydraulic conductivity, soil sorptivity (S), and soil water repellency (SWR) by in situ and laboratory experiments at two depths: 0∼2 cm and 2∼5cm beneath the soil surface in the low severity (LS) fire, medium severity (MS) fire, high severity (HS) fire areas, and adjacent unburned areas (as a control, C), respectively. The water drop penetration time (WDPT) test results showed that the SWR disappeared. The ANOVA analysis results indicated that, for the topsoil (0∼2 cm), most of the selected soil properties had a significant variance except for the S; only SMC and SOM showed a significant change for the deeper soil. The LS fire had negligible effects on these soil parameters at both depths. However, for the topsoil, the MS and HS fire effects were significant for most of these soil properties. The MANOVA analysis and paired t-test results indicated that the fire severity effects on the soil properties were significant, and the variance of fire severity effects was not constant at both depths. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) further confirmed that the HS and MS fires had significant impacts on the soil properties, and the effects of the LS fire were negligible. These results demonstrated that the medium-term effects of the high and moderate severity wildfires on the selected soil properties of the topsoil were significant. The partially recovered soil properties forebode an intense slope erosion or even a further catastrophic consequence.

In this paper, statistical data on forest fires in China are analyzed in order to reveal new features regarding the forest fire safety situation as the economy of China is growing. The causes of forest fires in China are also discussed. The classifications of forest fire hazard used to improve forest fire prevention and management in China are reviewed, and the current status of the fire researches in China is introduced.
