Abstract:Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a highly crystalline nanosized material with a high number of active groups. This study focuses on the synthesis of BC membranes through fermentation, their characterization and application to remove Ni(II) and Pb(II) from wastewater by adsorption under different conditions. Four-day-grown BC membranes form three-dimensional nanofibril networks with a pH of 6.3 and a high cationic demand (52.5 μeq·g−1). The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Sips isotherm model best describe the adsorption of both metals. The intraparticle diffusion model of Ni(II) revealed a three-step mechanism of adsorption-plateau-adsorption, while Pb(II) adsorption followed a typical reducing-slope trend up to saturation. The highest removal of Ni(II) and Pb(II) was obtained at pH 4 with a BC dosage of 400 mg·L−1. The maximum adsorption capacities were 28.18 mg·g−1 and 8.49 mg·g−1 for Ni(II) and Pb(II), respectively, involving the total coverage of the material active sites. Thermodynamically, Ni(II) adsorption was exothermic, and Pb(II) was endothermic. The obtained values of sorption heat, activation and Gibbs' energy depicted a physisorption process. Ni(II) removal mechanism was ruled by crystallization on the metals adsorbed on the BC active groups, while Pb(II) was driven by the adsorption process, as shown by TEM images of the spent material.

Abstract:Biosorbents for wastewater treatments is one of the most widely studied techniques in environmental and bioresource research. A marine-derived Penicillium janthinellum strain fungus was used in this study to prepare self-immobilized mycelial pellets. Fe3O4 nanoparticles were added in the culturing media, which were automatically incorporated in the mycelial pellets during culturing process to endow the pellets with magnetic properties. These magnetic mycelial pellets were used as biosorbents for water treatments, and their morphology was characterized by microscopic observation, Energy dispersive X-ray analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermal gravimetric analysis. The effects of nanoparticles in culture media on pellet formation were discussed and the content of nanoparticle in culturing media was optimized. Study on Congo red adsorption from aqueous solutions showed that the pellets with 71.6 wt% Fe3O4 nanoparticles had a maximum adsorption capacity of 102.4 mg/g pellets (360.6 mg/g mycelia), and the solution heated by magnetic induction showed faster adsorption rates than that of bulk liquid heating processes under the same adsorption temperature. These pellets were easily separated by magnetic forces and the magnetic induction heating is beneficial in energy saving when comparing to traditional heating processes. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Fungal biomass is as a cost-effective and sustainable biosorbent utilized in both active and inactive forms. This study investigated the efficacy of inactivated and dried biomass of Fusarium sp. in adsorbing Ni 2+ and Pb 2+ from aqueous solutions. The strain underwent sequential cultivation and was recovered by filtration. Then, the biomass was dried in an oven at 80 ± 2 °C and sieved using a 0.1-cm mesh. The biosorbent was thoroughly characterized, including BET surface area analysis, morphology examination (SEM), chemical composition (XRF and FT-IR), thermal behavior (TGA), and surface charge determination (pH-PZC and zeta potential). The biosorption mechanism was elucidated by fitting equilibrium models of kinetics, isotherm, and thermodynamic to the data. The biosorbent exhibited a neutral charge, a rough surface, a relatively modest surface area, appropriate functional groups for adsorption, and thermal stability above 200 °C. Optimal biosorption was achieved at 25 ± 2 °C, using 0.05 g of adsorbent per 50 mL of metallic ion solution at initial concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 2.0 mg L −1 and at pH 4.5 for Pb 2+ and Ni 2+ . Biosorption equilibrium was achieved after 240 min for Ni 2+ and 1440 min for Pb 2+ . The process was spontaneous, mainly through chemisorption, in monolayer for Ni 2+ and multilayer for Pb 2+ , with efficiencies of over 85% for both metallic ion removal. These findings underscore the potential of inactive and dry Fusarium sp. biomass (IDFB) as a promising material for the biosorption of Ni 2+ and Pb 2+ .

Abstract:The main objective of this work was to investigate the biosorption performance of nonviable Penicillium YW 01 biomass for removal of Acid Black 172 metal-complex dye (AB) and Congo Red (CR) in solutions. Maximum biosorption capacities of 225.38 and 411.53mgg−1 under initial dye concentration of 800mgL−1, pH 3.0 and 40°C conditions were observed for AB and CR, respectively. Biosorption data were successfully described with Langmuir isotherm and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The Weber-Morris model analysis indicated that intraparticle diffusion was the limiting step for biosorption of AB and CR onto biosorbent. Analysis based on the artificial neural network and genetic algorithms hybrid model indicated that initial dye concentration and temperature appeared to be the most influential parameters for biosorption process of AB and CR onto biosorbent, respectively. Characterization of the biosorbent and possible dye-biosorbent interaction were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy.

Abstract:Mycelial wastes of Rhizopus arrhizus, used in fermentation industries to produce lipases, were studied for their ability to absorb various heavy metal ions (Ni, Zn, Cd and Pb). Chelation of all these ions occurs by a chemical, equilibrated and saturatable mechanism, following the Langmuir adsorption model. Data transformation allowed us to calculate maximum uptake and dissociation constants of the sorption reaction. We also investigated the influence of pH on metal accumulation. Sorption capacity variations between different biosorbent types (Rhizopus, Mucor, Penicillium, and Aspergillus), could be related to their acidity. pH neutralisation during the sorption reaction considerably enhanced zinc chelation (up to 56 mg/g). Previous NaOH treatment of mycelial wastes also increased their capacity for metal sorption. We report R. arrhizus metal uptake curves versus pH, using a pH-stat system. Optimal adsorption was achieved at neutral pH for nickel and zinc, pH 5.0 for lead, and inhibition of chelation was observed when the pH decreased. These results illustrate the importance of pH during the adsorption process, indicating a competitive mechanism for chelation between heavy metal ions and protons at cell wall adsorption sites.

Abstract:The biomass of filamentous fungi is an important cost-effective biomass for heavy metal biosorption. However, use of free fungal cells can cause difficulties in the separation of biomass from the effluent. In this study, we immobilized the living conidia of the heavy metal-resistant Penicillium janthinillum strain GXCR by polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-sodium alginate (SA) beads to remove heavy metals from an aqueous solution containing a low concentration (70 mg/L) of Cu, Pb, and Cd. The PVA-SA-conidia beads showed perfect characters of appropriate mechanical strength suitable for metal removal from the dynamic wastewater environment, an ideal settleability, easy separation from the solution, and a high metal biosorption and removal rate even after four cycles of successive sorption-desorption of the beads, overcoming disadvantages when fungal biomasses alone are used for heavy metal removal from wastewater. We also discuss the major biosorption-affecting factors, biosorption models, and biosorption mechanisms.

Mechanism of Biosorption of Heavy Metals by Mucor rouxii

Abstract:Fungi such as Aspergillus niger and Mucor rouxii are capable of removing heavy metals from aqueous solutions. The role various functional groups play in the cell wall of M. rouxii in metal biosorption of lead, cadmium, nickel and zinc was investigated in this paper. The biomass was chemically treated to modify the functional carboxyl, amino and phosphate groups. These modifications were examined by means of infrared spectroscopy. It was found that an esterification of the carboxyl groups and phosphate and a methylation of the amine groups significantly decreased the biosorption of the heavy metals studied. Thus, the carboxylate, amine and phosphate groups were recognized as important in the biosorption of metal ions by M. rouxii biomass. The role the lipids fraction play was not significant. The study showed that Na, K, Ca and Mg ions were released from the biomass after biosorption of Pb, Cd, Ni and Zn, indicating that ion exchange was a key mechanism in the biosorption of metal ions by M. rouxii biomass. The role various functional groups play in the cell wall of the fungus Mucor rouxii in the biosorption of Pb, Cd, Ni, and Zn from aqueous solutions is examined. The carboxyl, amine, and phosphate groups in the cell wall were recognized as important in the biosorption of metal ions. In addition, it was found that ion exchange is a key mechanism in the biosorption of metal ions by M. rouxii biomass.
[Kinetics and Equilibrium of Ni2+ Biosorption by Waste Biomass of Saccharomyces Cerevisia].

Abstract:The biosorption characteristics of Ni2+ by the waste biomass of Saccharomyces cerevisia were investigated, including the biosorption kinetics as well as equilibrium isotherm study. The experimental results showed that when the initial Ni2+ concentration was 65.6 mg/L, the process of Ni2+ biosorption onto the biomass of Saccharomyces cerevisia could be divided into two stages, the first stage was physical sorption and reached equilibrium very quickly (within 10 minutes). The biosorption kinetics could be described by the pseudo second-order equation quite well (R2 = 0.999), and the kinetic parameters k2 and qe were 0.0184 g/(mg x min) and 5.96 mg/g, respectively. The equilibrium isotherm could be fitted by the Langmuir and Freundlich models, with the maximum biosorption capacity of 6.32 mg/g. The removal of Ni2+ from wastewater by biosorption is feasible.

Abstract:Recent work has focused on the removal of Pb2+, Hg2+, and Cd2+ by using an organ of Aspergillus niger - spores, which were spherical particles with small diameter (2 mu m) characterized by negative charge. Results shown that the biosorption of Pb2+, Hg2+, and Cd2+ from aqueous solutions using spores was analyzed at varying biosorbent dosages, pH levels, contact times and initial heavy metal concentrations. The maximum biosorption capacities of Pb2+, Hg2+, and Cd2+ were 23.9, 27.2, and 21.5 mg/g at a natural pH with the initial concentration were 30 mg/L, respectively. The sequence of biosorption capacity for cationic heavy metals was Pb2+>Cd2+>Hg2+. Spores exhibited a short biosorption equilibrium time of 60 min at a pH range of 4.0-6.0, and the main biosorption mechanism was electronic attraction, ion exchanges and complexation(involved in C = C, C-H, C-O, N-H), the data fit well in the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation and the Freundlich isotherm. In addition, Spores can grow on many kinds of moist agriculture waste without any added nutrition. The results showed that spores could be considered as a potential biosorbent for the removal of cationic heavy metals from aqueous solutions.

Abstract:A green efficient strategy for the combination of biodegradation and adsorption methods is urgently desired nowadays to degrade dyes in an economical and effective way. In this study, a kind of novel, environmentally friendly and efficient hybrid for the fungus and chitosan-Fe membrane has been fabricated by the alginate approach. Myrothecium verrucaria I-5 and C-1, deuteromycete fungi capable of producing laccase to degrade dyes, have been used. It is found that the chitosan-Fe membrane can excellently immobilize the fungi mycelia and enzyme, and after the immobilization, the fungi and enzyme still maintain a high activity after the dye decolorization. Also, the immobilized fungi membranes have been proved to have a high efficiency for dye decolorization. Simultaneously, the decolorization ability of the crude enzymes, which are extracted from I-5 and C-1 medium, and the decolorization ability of chitosan-Fe membrane are also investigated, respectively. The results demonstrate that the dyes can be removed by the fungi and the membrane synergistically. In addition, different kinds of dyes are successfully removed with chitosan-Fe immobilized fungi membranes. These results demonstrate that dyes are first adsorbed on the chitosan-Fe membrane, decreasing the toxicity to the fungus, and then bio-degraded by the laccase produced from the fungi on the membrane.
Polyethylenimine-Modified Fungal Biomass As A High-Capacity Biosorbent For Cr(Vi) Anions: Sorption Capacity And Uptake Mechisms

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution in the aqueous environment is a problem of global concern. Biosorption has been considered as a promising technology for the removal of low levels of toxic metals from industrial effluents and natural waters. A modified fungal biomass of Penicillium chrysogenum with positive surface charges was prepared by grafting polyethylenimine (PEI) onto the biomass surface in a two-step reaction. The presence of PEI on the biomass surface was verified by FTIR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. Due to the high density of amine groups in the long chains of PEI molecules on the surface, the modified biomass was found to possess positive zeta potential at pH below 10.4 as well as high sorption capacity for anionic Cr(VI). Using the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, the maximum sorption capacity for Cr(VI) at a pH range of 4.3-5.5 was 5.37 mmol/g of biomass dry weight, the highest sorption capacity for Cr(VI) compared to other sorbents reported in the literature. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) provided evidence of chromium aggregates formed on the biomass surface. XPS results verified the presence of Cr(III) on the biomass surface in the pH range 2.5-10.5, suggesting that some Cr(VI) anions were reduced to Cr(III) during the sorption. The sorption kinetics indicated that redox reaction occurred on the biomass surface, and whether the converted Cr(III) ions were released to solution or adsorbed on the biomass depended on the solution pH. Sorption mechanisms including electrostatic interaction, chelation, and precipitation were found to be involved in the complex sorption of chromium on the PEI-modified biomass.

Abstract:In this study, the ability of live mycelia of Schizophyllum commune to remove heavy metals from aqueous solution was investigated. The influence of various experimental parameters, such as pH, temperature, and contact time on the biosorption process was investigated. The maximum biosorption capacity using live biomass was found as 81.5, 90.71, 70.18, and 66.18 mg/g for Pb(II), Sr(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II), respectively, at optimized conditions. The biosorption process reaches equilibrium between 180 and 240 min for the tested metal ions. The experimental data were used to study biosorption isotherm and kinetics models. The thermodynamic parameters, ΔG°, ΔH°, and ΔS°, showed that the biosorption process was endothermic and spontaneous at 303–343 K. SEM images revealed that the presence of metal ions altered the morphology of fungal hyphae. The presence of Pb(II), Sr(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II)on the fungal mycelia was confirmed using SEM-EDX. FTIR spectroscopy of biomass showed the involvement of functional groups like, -CH, amino acid, fatty acid, carboxyl group, and alkane and alkyl groups in adsorption of heavy metal ions. The adsorption capacity of S. commune for removal of heavy metals under the optimized conditions was Sr(II) > Pb(II) > Zn(II) > Cd(II). Thus, the study demonstrated an application of Schizophyllum commune for efficient removal of heavy metals from metal-contaminated water or industrial effluents.

Abstract:The ability of white-rot fungus, Pycnoporus sanguineus to adsorb copper (II) ions from aqueous solution is investigated in a batch system. The live fungus cells were immobilized into Ca-alginate gel to study the influence of pH, initial metal ions concentration, biomass loading and temperature on the biosorption capacity. The optimum uptake of Cu (II) ions was observed at pH 5 with a value of 2.76mg/g. Biosorption equilibrium data were best described by Langmuir isotherm model followed by Redlich-Peterson and Freundlich models, respectively. The biosorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion equations. The thermodynamic parameters enthalpy change (10.16kJ/mol) and entropy change (33.78J/molK) were determined from the biosorption equilibrium data. The FTIR analysis showed that OH, NH, CH, CO, COOH and CN groups were involved in the biosorption of Cu (II) ions onto immobilized cells of P. sanguineus. The immobilized cells of P. sanguineus were capable of removing Cu (II) ions from aqueous solution.

Abstract:Contaminations of heavy metals and dyes are a global concern due to their higher toxicity and carcinogenicity. Removal of heavy metals and dyes from aqueous solution by adsorption is a promising technology. Biological methods have advantages over chemical methods. Fungus serves as a biosorbent due to its high metal and dye adsorption capacities. A number of functional groups on the surface of the fungal biosorbent pay a key role in the adsorption of heavy metals and dyes. The beneficial effects of immobilized fungi are based on the fact that high concentrations of the fungi may imply high volumetric productivities. The immobilized fungus is easy to be separated from other components in the reaction mixture, simplifying downstream processing, and more importantly, it can then be used repeatedly and continuously. For getting better success rates in the wastewater treatment, it is important to understand the biosorption mechanisms undertaken by fungi during the bioremediation process. Different kinds of adsorption kinetics and equilibrium models are reviewed in relation to fungus. Fungi-based bioreactor recently was found to be effective in the treatment of wastewater by following continuous mode of action and easy upscaling of the biodegradation process. Various types of fungal pellet bioreactors have been recommended for wastewater treatment. This chapter highlights the application of fungi in the removal of heavy metals and dyes from wastewater through biosorption processes.
Kinetics of Ni2+ Biosorption by Mixed SRB Population Immobilized in Ca-alginate

Abstract:The mixed SRB population was acclimated and immobilized in Ca-alginate gel beads, and the immobilized SRB was used for removing Ni~ 2+ from aqueous solution. The kinetic characteristics of Ni~ 2+ biosorption by immobilized SRB were investigated. The experimental results demonstrated that the immobilized mixed SRB was effective in removing Ni~ 2+ from aqueous solution, and the maximal absorption capacity was up to 931.9 mg/g dry beads (DW). This biomaterial should be a promising biosorbent for removing heavy metal ions form aqueous solution. The kinetics of Ni~ 2+ biosorption onto the immobilized SRB followed pseudo-second order model and the biosorption process over the entire adsorption time range fell into two distinct stages, i.e., physiochemical sorption stage and bioprecipitation stage. Further study on diffusion kinetics showed that intra-particle diffusion was not the only rate-limiting step, there were several adsorptive mechanisms involved in the entire adsorption process. Adsorption-desorption Characteristics of Fermented Rice Husk for Ferrous and Sulfur Ions

Abstract:To understand the potential of rice husk to fix Fe2+ and S2- ions, the sorption of Fe2+ and S2- by fermented rice husk was studied by using batch incubation experiments in the present study. The effects of adsorption time, Fe2+ and S2- concentration, pH, the temperature and ionic strength in adsorption reaction solution on the sorption were investigated. Therefore, the stability of Fe2+ and S2- adsorbed by fermented rice husk was further validated by desorption experiments performed under similar conditions as adsorption. The results showed that, the adsorption kinetics of Fe2+ (r = 0.912 1) and S2- (r = 0.901 1) by fermented rice husk fits the Elovich kinetics equation, and Freundlich isotherm model could simulate the isotherm adsorption processes of Fe2+ (R2 = 0.965 1) and S2- (R2 = 0.936 6) on fermented rice husk was better than other models. The adsorption processes on fermented rice husk were non- preferential adsorption for Fe2+ and S2, while the adsorption process of Fe2+ on fermented rice husk was spontaneous reaction and the adsorption process of S2- was non-spontaneous reaction. The adsorption processes of Fe2+ and S2- on fermented rice husk were endothermic process since high temperature could benefit to the adsorption. The adsorption mechanism of Fe2+ on fermented rice husk was mainly controlled by coordination adsorption, the adsorption mechanism of S2- on fermented rice husk was mainly controlled by ligand exchange adsorption. The adsorption processes of Fe2+ and S2- on fermented rice husk showed greater pH adaptability which ranged from 1.50 to 11.50. With the increasing of ionic strength, the amount of adsorbed Fe2+ on fermented rice husk wasincreased in some extent, the amount of adsorbed S2- on fermented rice husk was slightly decreased, which further proved the adsorption of Fe2+ was major in inner sphere complexation and the adsorption of S2- was major in outer complexation. The desorption rates of Fe2+ and S2- which was adsorbed by fermented rice husk were lower in different pH or ionic strength conditions, the desorption rates were all below 10 percentage which proved that the adsorption stabilities of Fe2+ and S2- on fermented rice husk were superior. The above results indicated that, the adsorption abilities to Fe2+ and S2- on fermented rice husk were better and had greater environmental adaptability. The Fe2+ and S2- adsorbed by fermented rice husk showed higher stability, and were not easy to release again.
Role of Extracellular Polymeric Substances in Biosorption of Pb2+ by a High Metal Ion Tolerant Fungal Strain Aspergillus Niger PTN31

Abstract:It is widely reported that fungal strains show good heavy metal ions tolerance, but the role of fungal extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in heavy metal ion biosorption and tolerance is still not clear. In this study, a high metal ion tolerant fungal strain PTN31, identified as Aspergillus niger, was isolated, which could grow in the medium with coexistence of various metal ions. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for Pb was up to 72 mM. Moreover, biosorption behaviors and mechanisms of Pb2+ by PTN31 and extracted EPS were fully tested. Higher pH promoted biosorption of Pb2+ by the both biosorbents due to deprotonation of the functional groups in microorganisms and EPS. High and low temperature affected the physiological and metabolic activity of the biosorbents, leading to low Pb2+ adsorption. The adsorption kinetic process was well described by pseudosecond order model (R-2 > 0.98) and the adsorption isotherm fit well with Freundlich model (R-2 > 0.95). The maximum monolayer Pb2+ biosorption capacity of extracted EPS form PTN31 was as high as 713.6 mg/g, whereas Pb2+ biosorption capacity of PTN31 was decreased by 40.9%-66.8% after removal of EPS. Therefore, large Pb2+ biosorption capability of EPS is primarily responsible for the high lead tolerance of strain PTN31. EDS and FTIR indicated that EPS with abundant functional groups was highly related to the formation of cell aggregates, which could build a protective barrier for protecting cells from hostile environments.

Abstract:Waste biomass may be used in fermentation processes to remove heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions.The characteristics and kinetics of biosorption of zinc ion by the intact Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells were investigated.The experimental results show that with initial zinc ion concentration of 5.232~52.32 mg·L~(-1) at a natural pH of 5.65 without a buffer,and a sorbent concentration of about 1.0 g·L~(-1),the zinc ion biosorption capacities were 2.57~42.82 mg/g with removal efficiencies of 76.4%~92.8% after(38 h.The) pH value increased 0.55~1.28.The complex zinc ion biosorption kinetics can be divided into several stages,including an obvious desorption phase,especially for high zinc ion concentration.The zinc ion biosorption process follows a pseudo-second order process with respect to the zinc ion concentration at a constant sorbent dosage.The rate constants decreased and the initial sorption rate increased as the initial zinc ion concentration increased.The results show that intact Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells can be applied to remove zinc ions from aqueous solutions.

Abstract:Heavy metal ions contain highly toxic and non-biodegradable wastewater pollutants seriously contaminating the environment and affecting human health. Removal of heavy metal ions from the environment is a vital step towards the elimination of water pollution on a global scale. Therefore, in this study, cellulose was modified with L-cysteine, sodium alginate and polyethyleneimine to produce cellulose/sodium alginate /polyethyleneimine/L-cysteine composite hydrogel microspheres (WCMs/SA/PEI/L-Cys) in order to efficiently adsorb heavy metal ions. Co(II) and Ni(II) are successfully removed from water. After their production, the sorbents underwent examination using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, the investigation of the mechanism and adsorption characteristics of cellulose-modified gel microspheres WCMs/SA/PEI/L-Cys has been completed. The majority of the adsorption of contaminants by cellulose-modified gel microspheres WCMs/SA/PEI/L-Cys adhered to the Langmuir isothermal adsorption model and quasi-secondary kinetic model. The intra-particle diffusion model was adopted for improving the fitting of the adsorption process in the materials. It was indicated that the internal and external diffusion acted together to eliminate the contaminants from the materials. When exploring the decontamination mechanism of the materials using XPS, it was shown that the functional groups containing nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur play a key role in removing contaminants. For Co(II) and Ni(II), the highest adsorption capacities of the sorbent were 358 and 373 mg/g, respectively. The material exhibited robust stability and recyclability based on the regeneration experiment results, remaining stable after six adsorption cycles and retaining over 80% of the initial adsorption amount.

Abstract:Heavy metals are ubiquitous contaminants that have accompanied man since the earliest ancient times, and unlike other environmental pollutants, they are chemical elements that man does not create or destroy. In the present study, the aim was to determine the biosorption potential of heavy metal-tolerant fungi that were isolated from compost soil samples contaminated by industrial effluents. The isolation was performed on potato dextrose agar (PDA) media supplemented with heavy metals. Chromium-Cr(VI) and nickel-Ni. The most dominant fungal species were found to be Penicillium spp. This fungus was screened for its ability to tolerate heavy metals by the plate diffusion and broth method and was highly tolerant to fungal species. The fungi were assessed for their ability to remove heavy metals from the culture media, and the culture conditions for the fungus were experimentally optimized. The isolated Penicillium species was found to show maximum growth at 35°C with media pH 6 for an incubation period of 168 hours. The isolate was able to tolerate 60-70 ppm concentrations of heavy metals under normal conditions. The ability of the isolate to take up metal was very effective, as after 96 hrs of incubation, it was capable of removing approximately 93.8% of Cr(VI) and 95.6% of Ni from the culture media, and complete uptake was observed after a 144 hr incubation period. The molecular characterization revealed the only isolate to be Penicillium rubens (Accession no. LC536286). The morphological characteristics of this fungus make it capable of biosorption of heavy metals, imparting its bioremediation potential and economic importance.
