Abstract:Some developments on fractional Fourier optics are reported in this paper. First, a thick lens can be regarded as a fractional Fourier transformer. Second, relations between the Collins formulae and the fractional Fourier transform or fractional Hankel transform are bridged, we show that the Collins formulae in spatial domain or in spatial-frequency domain can be described by the fractional Fourier transform or fractional Hankel transform. Third, connections between the multi-element resonators and the scaled fractional Fourier transforms are established, it is shown that there exists twice scaled fractional Fourier transform for beams in completing one round trip, the beam oscillation in resonator can be viewed as a process of consecutive implementing scaled fractional Fourier transform. Finally, some extensions of the fractional Fourier transforms to misaligned optical systems are simply reviewed.

Abstract:The optical structures for implementation of the fractional Fourier transform were analyzed based on the theory of impulse response functions of the lens combination optical system, and the meaning of the standard focal length was discussed. Several general optical setups were provided. By using these setups, the standard focal length can be adjusted easily. It will be significant for designing a spatially, variant filtering system with multiple cascaded optical fractional Fourier transformers. The experimental results performed by a single lens or double lenses are also given.

Abstract:An anamorphic fractional Fourier transform (AFrFT) lens based on graded index (GRIN) materials and designed with the help of transformation optics is proposed. Cross sections of the new lens are mapped from those of a standard quadratic GRIN lens via gradually varied conformal transformations. This lens can afford complicated anamorphic patterns in the fractional Fourier domain for any fractional order, possibly leading to many new applications. Three samples are shown, which offer higher distinguishability in the fractional Fourier domain, a more precisely recognized matched filter, and stronger security of the AFrFT-based optical encryption. With metamaterials development, including three-dimensional printing technologies, GRIN media fabrication has become more convenient; thus, the proposed lens may have vast application prospects in signal processing. The design also demonstrates the ability and flexibility of the transformation optics in exploring new Fourier optics devices.

Abstract:The new fractional Fourier transform, proposed by Shih [Optics Comm. 118 (1995) 495], is shown to differ from the conventional fractional Fourier transform by its four periodic eigenvalues with respect to the order of Hermite-Gaussian functions. Simulations demonstrate that the Hermite-Gaussian superposition algorithm is still valid for this new transform. We also propose a general fractionalization procedure which includes these two definitions as two limits.

Abstract:The fractional transforms are a class of powerful tool for the presentation of time–frequency domains in the field of signal processing. Based on the convolution algorithm of discrete fractional Fourier transform and gyrator transform, we propose a generalized framework defining a class of fractional transforms. By choosing various phase filters, the fractional transform can be employed for different computational tasks of information processing. The several properties of typical fractional transform are reserved in this definition scheme. Under the model of the convolution-based transform, fractional Fourier transform and gyrator transform are synthesized. Moreover, the transform can be implemented by an optical 4f system with phase-only filtering easily, which is a useful tool in the application of optical information processing. Numerical results are given for demonstrating the proposed transform and its application.

Abstract:The effect of lens with spherical aberration on the fractional Fourier transformation systems is introduced and analysed in this paper. Consider the fundamental mode Gaussian beam as an input function, the intensity distributions of the output field through the fractional Fourier transformation system with spherically aberrated lens are obtained by numerical calculation. The results show that different kinds or values of spherical aberration coefficient contribute to the output intensity distribution differently even for the same fractional order. It is also shown that Lohmann’s two types of optical setups with spherically aberrated lens for implementing the fractional Fourier transform are no longer equivalent.
A Light-Ray Approach to Fractional Fourier Optics

Abstract:A light ray in space is characterized by two vectors: (i) a transverse spatial-vector associated with the point where the ray intersects a given spherical cap; (ii) an angular-frequency vector which defines the ray direction of propagation. Given a light ray propagating from a spherical emitter to a spherical receiver, a linear equation is established that links its representative vectors on the emitter and on the receiver. The link is expressed by means of a matrix which is not homogeneous, since it involves both spatial and angular variables (having distinct physical dimensions). Indeed, the matrix becomes a homogeneous rotation-matrix after scaling the previous variables with appropriate dimensional coefficients. When applied to diffraction, in the framework of a scalar theory, the scaling operation results directly in introducing fractional-order Fourier transformations as mathematical expressions of Fresnel diffraction phenomena. Linking angular-frequency vectors and spatial frequencies results in an interpretation of the notion of a spherical angular-spectrum. Accordance of both inhomogeneous and homogeneous ray-matrices with Huygens-Fresnel principle is examined. The proposed ray-matrix representation of diffraction is also applied to coherent imaging through a lens.

Abstract:Based on the misaligned diffraction integral formula for misaligned optical systems, the diffraction for misaligned Lohmann's fractional Fourier transformation system and quasi-asymmetrically inhomogeneous medium are analysed, respectively. It is found that there exist similar expressions of misaligned diffraction integral formula and they are essentially equivalent. And also, a new concept of misaligned fractional Fourier transform is put forward.

Abstract:We emphasize the diffraction properties of cylindrically symmetrical first order systems. Based on matrix optics, our investigations lead to two conclusions. One is that diffraction of such a lossless system consists of a fractional Fourier transform. The other is that the fractional order of the system is not unique. Abstract:Estimating the chirpiness of a spatial chirp signal is important in many optical engineering applications. With the help of transformation optics, a new kind of fractional Fourier transform lens is designed by deforming the conventional graded index lens through conformal mapping, which can manipulate the chirpiness of the input chirp signal. The low-input chirpiness is magnified by the transformation material, and the error of the detection is kept approximately the same; thus, the designed lens has enhanced chirpiness detection precision and distinguishability for low chirpiness. The design is validated by numerical simulations.

Abstract:By converting the triangular functions in the integration kernel of the fractional Fourier transformation to the hyperbolic function, i.e., tan alpha --> tanh alpha, sin alpha --> sinh alpha, we find the quantum mechanical fractional squeezing transformation (FrST) which satisfies additivity. By virtue of the integration technique within the ordered product of operators (IWOP) we derive the unitary operator responsible for the FrST, which is composite and is made of e(i pi a dagger a/2) and exp [i alpha/2 (a(2) + a(dagger 2))]. The FrST may be implemented in combinations of quadratic nonlinear crystals with different phase mismatches.

Abstract:We propose a complete way to fractionalize Fourier transform. This fractionalization can perfectly extend the fractional Fourier transform (FRFT) defined in [C.C. Shih, Opt. Commun. 118 (1995) 495] to the original one in [V. Namias, J. Inst. Math. Appl. 25 (1980) 241]. The new FRFT proposed in this paper can have any integer M(⩾3)-periodic eigenvalues not only with respect to the order of Hermite–Gaussian functions but also to the order of the transform, and it will be reduced to the FRFT in [Namias, loc. cit.; Shih, loc. cit.; S. Liu, J. Jiang, Y. Zhang, J. Zhang, J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 30 (1997) 973] at the three limits with M=+∞, M=4, M=4k (k is a natural number), respectively.

Abstract:The Fractional Fourier Transform is a ubiquitous signal processing tool in basic and applied sciences. The Fractional Fourier Transform generalizes every property and application of the Fourier Transform. Despite the practical importance of the discrete fractional Fourier transform, its applications in digital communications have been elusive. The convolution property of the discrete Fourier transform plays a vital role in designing multi-carrier modulation systems. Here we report a closed-form affine discrete fractional Fourier transform and we show the circular convolution property for it. The proposed approach is versatile and generalizes the discrete Fourier transform and can find applications in Fourier based signal processing tools.

Abstract:The Collins formula in frequency-domain for description of angle spectrum transformation through ABCD optical systems can he written in terms of a fractional Fourier transform in the Cartesian-coordinates, or can be written in terms of a fractional Hankel transform in the cylindrical coordinates. It is shown that, when the matrix element D = 0, it is related to the standard Fourier transform or standard Hankel transform for angle spectrum; and when C = 0, it corresponds to image-forming operator transform in frequency-domain. Abstract:Existing deep learning-based computer vision methods usually operate in the spatial and frequency domains, which are two orthogonal \textbf{individual} perspectives for image processing. In this paper, we introduce a new spatial-frequency analysis tool, Fractional Fourier Transform (FRFT), to provide comprehensive \textbf{unified} spatial-frequency perspectives. The FRFT is a unified continuous spatial-frequency transform that simultaneously reflects an image's spatial and frequency representations, making it optimal for processing non-stationary image signals. We explore the properties of the FRFT for image processing and present a fast implementation of the 2D FRFT, which facilitates its widespread use. Based on these explorations, we introduce a simple yet effective operator, Multi-order FRactional Fourier Convolution (MFRFC), which exhibits the remarkable merits of processing images from more perspectives in the spatial-frequency plane. Our proposed MFRFC is a general and basic operator that can be easily integrated into various tasks for performance improvement. We experimentally evaluate the MFRFC on various computer vision tasks, including object detection, image classification, guided super-resolution, denoising, dehazing, deraining, and low-light enhancement. Our proposed MFRFC consistently outperforms baseline methods by significant margins across all tasks.

Abstract:In the first part of this paper, we define a deep convolutional neural network connected with the fractional Fourier transform (FrFT) using the $\theta$-translation operator, the translation operator associated with the FrFT. Subsequently, we study $\theta$-translation invariance properties of this network. Unlike the classical case, these networks are not translation invariant. \par In the second part, we study data approximation problems using the FrFT. More precisely, given a data set $\fl=\{f_1,\cdots, f_m\}\subset L^2(\R^n)$, we obtain $\Phi=\{\phi_1,\cdots,\phi_\ell\}$ such that \[ V_\theta(\Phi)=\argmin\sum_{j=1}^m \|f_j-P_{V}f_j\|^2, \] where the minimum is taken over all $\theta$-shift invariant spaces generated by at most $\ell$ elements.
