Abstract:The wavelength of 20Gb/s OTDM signal with center wavelength 1533. 9nm is successfully converted by using a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM), the largest converted distance is 26nm. The optical spectrum and eye diagram of converted signal were measured and analyzed in this paper.

Abstract:Two-channel wavelength conversion for 2.5 Gbit/s, return-to-zero optical pulse was achieved by use of nonlinear optical loop mirror. The maximum separation between the control laser wavelength and the signal laser wavelength is 35 nm. In this system, GS DFB-LD is used as the control pulse with the pulse width of 20 ps, while DFB-LD and wavelength tunable laser are used as signal lasers. The phase wavelength conversion and pulse degradation were observed for first time at the wavelength of 1.550 μm.

Abstract:The wavelength of 2.5 Gbit/s RZ optical pulse is successfully converted over 20 nm based on nonlinear optical loop mirror. With PRBS of 223-1, the bit error rate is 1.3×10-14 at the optimal conversion after one hour error measurement. The widths of the initial signal optical pulse and the probe optical pulse are 28 ps and 37 ps, and the related center wavelengths are 1533 nm and 1553 nm, respectively.

Abstract:A novel all-optical wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) signal up-conversion scheme based on cross-phase modulation in a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) was proposed and experimentally demonstrated. For the first time, we have successfully realized the simultaneous up-conversion of 16 /spl times/ 2.5 Gb/s WDM signals in the whole C-band with 40-GHz local oscillator (LO) signal. The experimental results show the performances of WDM signals are in good accordance with a single signal in an NOLM without any interference, and the carrier-to-sideband ratio is greatly related to the optical LO power.

Abstract:Wavelength conversion of short pulses at 10 GHz based on a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) is experimentally and numerically investigated for the case of small group velocity dispersion and walkoff between the control pulses and continuous lightwaves. Experimental and numerical simulation results show that the pulsewidths of the converted signals at different wavelengths are almost the same, and the pulsewidths are compressed when the peak power of the control pulse is smaller than a certain value. An RZ optical source containing eight wavelengths having a high sidemode suppression ratio, equal amplitudes and almost the same pulsewidths is obtained by using wavelength conversion in a NOLM consisting of a common dispersion shifted fiber. 10 Gb/s NRZ wavelength conversion based on the NOLM is demonstrated for the first time and certain conclusions in some of the references are confirmed by our experimental results.

Abstract:All-optical wavelength conversion has been achieved to generate a multichannel return-to-zero optical source for wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) systems by using a nonlinear optical loop mirror consisting of a common dispersion-shifted fiber. After WDM transmission over 40-km SMF, the WDM signals are successfully regenerated by a novel regenerator including reshaping and reamplification based on a dispersion-imbalanced loop mirror consisting of an SMF and a highly nonlinear dispersion-shifted fiber.

Abstract:Wavelength conversion and signal regeneration are realized simultaneously by employing a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM). The experiments demonstrate that the NOLM has strong regenerative capability when it is used as wavelength conversion media. Proper choice of the initial state of the polarization controller in the NOLM can enhance the extinction ratio of the converted signal.

Abstract:Broad-hand and pulsewidth maintained wavelength conversion based on a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) consisting of l-km high-nonlinearity dispersion-shifted fiber (HNL-DSF) is realized in the whole C-band, Because only I-km HNL-DSF fiber is used, the walkoff and dispersion effects are reduced. After 160-km standard single-mode fiber return-to-zero (RZ) transmission at 10 Gb/s and full-dispersion compensation, the converted signal has a small penalty and the pulsewidth of the converted pulses is almost maintained; these;results indicate that the converted pulses have very good performance in the whole C-band.

Abstract:An experiment of all-optical demultiplexing of one 2.5 Gb/s channel from an 8×2.5 Gb/s OTDM data stream using nonlinear optical loop mirror with 3 km dispersion shifted fiber was presented here. The bit error rate (BER) of the demultiplexed channel was measured. A BER of 10-11 was achieved in our experiment and the power penalty was only 1.4 dB when BER was 10-9.

Abstract:The authors demonstrate that the extinction ratio (ER) can be improved when a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) is used as a wavelength conversion medium. At 40 Gbit/s, an ER of 7 dB for a converted signal generated by cross-gain modulation in a semiconductor optical amplifier is improved to an ER of 10 dB after wavelength conversion in an NOLM.

Abstract:Nonlinear-optical-loop-mirror-based wavelength conversion is studied in details. A set of two-phase-shifted Bragg gratings are introduced into the converter, serving as a narrow band-pass filter to remove new frequencies generated by walk-off and to compensate the dispersion. Numerical simulations are performed to validate this method. The results show that the converted pulses after the filter are reshaped and, sometimes, even compressed.

Abstract:Simultaneous conversion for the continue waveform to return to zero and wavelength based on nonlinear optical loop mirror was achieved for the first time in China. The maximum separation of the wavelength conversion between the control laser and the signal laser is larger than 35nm. In our system,the gain switched distribute feed back laser-diode is used as the control pulse with the pulse width of 2 0 nm , the wavelength tunable laser diode is used as the signal laser. The out - phase wavelength conversion was measured at 1550nm wavelength for the first time. When the walk-off time between the signal pulse and the control pulse is larger than 4 0. 7 ps , the converted signal pulse waveform is degraded,and the width of the converted is broadened.

Abstract:The application of NOLM to wavelength conversion may be promising in practical high speed communication systems. This paper gives a numerical analysis of the NOLM based on a mathematical description of the NOLM by the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations. The results show that increasing the loop length and working in anomalous-dispersion regime can achieve satisfied output, proper adjusting the relation between initial time delay and walk-off can compensate walk-off induced degradation.

Abstract:Wavelength conversion and five-channel multicasting for 20 Gbit/s quadrature phase-shift keying signals have been experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide with digital coherent detection. The eye diagrams and constellation diagrams of the converted and multicasting idlers are successfully observed. Moreover, the bit-error rates (BERs) of the generated idlers are measured and the power penalties are all less than 0.7 dB at a BER of 3×10(-3).

Abstract:Multi-wavelength conversion was simultaneously achieved by using nonlinear optical loop mirror. The maximum separation of the wavelength conversion between the control laser and signal laser is larger than 25 nm. The gain-switched distributed feed-back laser-diode is used as the control light with a pulse width of 20 ps, and the spectrum-sliced fiber amplifier light source is used for the signal lasers with multi-wavelength output. The performance of the converted signal with different wavelength depends on the control optical power or the direction of the polarization controller in the mirror.

Abstract:All-optical wavelength conversion for 2×11.64 GBaud adaptively-modulated orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (AM-OFDM) signals with QPSK/16QAM formats is experimentally demonstrated in a silicon waveguide. The AM-OFDM signal with partly higher- (and lower-) order formats on lower- (and higher-) frequency subcarriers has better overall conversion performance in receiving optical signal-to-noise ratio and power penalty. In comparison with the OFDM-QPSK signal, at the BER of 3.8×10-3, the bit rate increases 11.64 Gbit/s per channel almost without conversion power penalty increased by replacing the QPSK sequence with the 16QAM sequence on half subcarriers.

Abstract:We demonstrate an optical time division demultiplexing from 8 X 2.5 Gb/s pseudorandom data stream using a nonlinear optical loop mirror, or nonlinear fiber Sagnac interferometer switch. To ensure good extinction ratio of the demultiplexed signal, some experimental results show it is necessary to adjust carefully the dc bias, modulation current, compression fiber length and switching width and synchronous between the data and control pulses.
