Abstract:The electromagnetic scattering by an array of finite cylindrically curved thin screens is investigated in this paper, and the normally incident plane wave can be either TMz- or TEz-polarised. The mathematical treatment here is based on the direct integral equation technique combined with the Galerkin's procedure, and the induced currents on the curved thin screens or apertures are expanded in terms of a series of Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind. Furthermore, the far-zone field solutions to such a multiple coupling system are obtained in an analytical form, and parametric calculations are performed to show the variation of the scattered far-zone field distributions at both TMz- and TEz-polarisation incidences.

Abstract:A generalized procedure was developed to investigate the multiple scattering characteristics of an array of multiple slit-coupled cylindrical impedance cavities for both TM(z) and TE(z) incident plane waves. Based on the direct integral equation technique combined with the Galerkin's procedure, the induced current on the impedance walls was expanded in terms of the Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind with fast convergence rate. The far-zone scattered field solutions to such a multiple coupling system were obtainable in analytical form. Numerical calculations were performed to show the variation of the far-zone scattered fields with the geometrical sizes of some typical array design parameters, such as the angular widths of cavity walls or slits, as well as the inductive and capacitive impedance parameters.

Abstract:The scattering of a TM-polarized plane wave by some bianisotropic eccentric cylinders is considered. Such composite structures include a one-layer bianisotropic eccentric cylindrical shell, a two-layer bianisotropic eccentric cylinder, and an impedance cylinder embedded in an eccentric bianisotropic cylinder, respectively. An algorithm based on the boundary value technique combined with the addition theorem for cylindrical functions is constructed, and Is also suitable for the obliquely incident case. Numerical results are presented to show the different effects of various geometrical and constitutive parameters on the copolarized and cross-polarized bistatic echo widths of bianisotropic eccentric cylinders. Abstract:To complete the scattering analysis of an arbitrary shaped perfectly electric conductor over a wide frequency band, the Chebyshev polynomial of first kind is applied. The Chebyshev nodes within a given frequency range are found, and then the surface electric currents at these nodes are computed by the method of moments. The surface current is expanded in a polynomial function via the Chebyshev approximation. Using this function, the electric current distribution can be obtained at any frequency within the given frequency range. The numerical results are compared with the results obtained by the method of moments, and the complexity of computation is reduced obviously.

Abstract:On the basis of equilibrium equations for static electric and magnetic fields, two unknown functions related to electric and magnetic fields were firstly introduced to rewrite the governing equations, boundary conditions and initial conditions for mechanical field. Then by introducing a dependent variable and a special function satisfying the inhomogeneous mechanical boundary conditions, the governing equation for a new variable with homogeneous mechanical boundary conditions is obtained. By using the separation of variables technique as well as the electric and magnetic boundary conditions, the dynamic problem of a functionally graded magneto-electro-elastic hollow sphere under spherically symmetric deformation is transformed to two Volterra integral equations of the second kind about two unknown functions of time. Cubic Hermite polynomials are adopted to approximate the two undetermined functions at each time subinterval and the recursive formula for solving the integral equations is derived. Transient responses of displacements, stresses, electric and magnetic potentials are completely determined at the end. Numerical results are presented and discussed.

Abstract:An investigation of expansion problems in terms of spherical wave functions from different points of view is given. The possibility of having infinitely many formal series representations for a given function in terms of the associated Legendre functions p_{n}^{m} and \sin \theta(dp_{n}^{m}/d\theta is also pointed out. One of the representations is derived by the use of the orthogonality relation, and the infinitely many others are derived by the use of the recurrence relation.

Abstract:This paper investigates a wire-grid model for the scattering analysis of bodies using the method of moments (MoM). The accuracy of the model is explored in terms of basis functions, and the size and radius of the segments of the model are determined through a defined error function. The numerical simulations indicate that the wire-grid model can accurately calculate the scattering problems when the proper model and the triangular basis function in the MoM are used. The optimal radius of the segments in the model is determined. However, the MoM with the sinusoidal basis function used in NEC2 results in very high error if both large size and large radius are adopted for the segments. (c) 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:In this paper, new boundary differential equations for the two-dimensional exterior scattering problem have been derived. It has been shown that the Helmholtz equation can be reduced to an inhomogeneous Bessel's equation in a body-fitted coordinate system. By imposing the Sommerfeld radiation condition to the general solution of the Bessel's equation, an integro-differential equation, which is equivalent to the original Helmholtz equation, can be obtained. The boundary differential equation can then be established by use of the integration by parts to get rid of the integral in the integro-differential equation for high frequency problems. Numerical examples have been presented to demonstrate the validity of the new boundary differential equations.

Abstract:An on-surface radiation condition for Maxwell's equations is derived through the asymptotic expansion of the electromagnetic pseudodifferential operator to obtain straightforward high-frequency solutions of electromagnetic scattering from three-dimensional perfectly conducting convex objects. The present on-surface radiation condition expresses the tangential scattered magnetic field (unknown) on the surface in terms of the tangential scattered electric field (known) on the surface and its surface geometrical differentions. Abstract:Abstract Exact Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) radiation boundary conditions are derived in elliptic and spheroidal coordinates and formulated in a finite element method for the Helmholtz equation in unbounded domains. The DtN map matches the first N wave harmonics exactly at the artificial boundary. The use of elliptic and spheroidal boundaries enables the efficient solution of scattering from elongated objects in two- and three-dimensions respectively. Modified DtN conditions based on first and second order local boundary operators are also derived in elliptic and spheroidal coordinates, in a form suitable for finite element implementation. The modified DtN conditions are more accurate than the DtN boundary condition, yet require no extra memory and little extra cost. Direct implementation involves non-local spatial integrals leading to a dense, fully populated submatrix. A matrix-free interpretation of the non-local DtN map for elliptic and spheroidal boundaries, suitable for iterative solution of the resulting complex-symmetric system is described. For both the DtN and modified DtN conditions, we describe efficient and effective SSOR preconditioners with Eisenstat’s trick based on the matrix partition associated with the interior mesh and local boundary operator. Numerical examples of scattering from elliptic and spheroidal boundaries are computed to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the boundary treatments for elongated structures.

Abstract:Scattering of a Hermite-Gaussian beam field by a chiral sphere is analyzed. A Hermite-Gaussian beam field is expressed as a superposition of multipole fields at complex-source points. Electromagnetic fields are expanded in terms of the spherical vector wave functions. The unknown expansion coefficients for the scattered field and the internal field are determined by the boundary conditions. As numerical examples, the scattered near fields of the beam incidence are calculated, and the effects of the chirality and the radius of the chiral sphere on the fields are examined. The results for a Gaussian beam incidence are also compared with those of a plane-wave incidence.
Boundary-field formulation for transient electromagnetic scattering by dielectric scatterers and coated conductors

Abstract:We examine the transient scattered and transmitted fields generated when an incident electromagnetic wave impinges on a dielectric scatterer or a coated conductor embedded in an infinite space. By applying a boundary-field equation method, we reformulate the problem in the Laplace domain using the electric field equation inside the scatterer and a system of boundary integral equations for the scattered electric field in free space. To analyze this nonlocal boundary problem, we replace it by an equivalent boundary value problem. Existence, uniqueness and stability of the weak solution to the equivalent BVP are established in appropriate function spaces in terms of the Laplace transformed variable. The stability bounds are translated into time-domain estimates which determine the regularity of the solution in terms of the regularity of the problem data. These estimates can be easily converted into error estimates for a numerical discretization on the convolution quadrature for time evolution.

Abstract:The scattering coefficients of spheres with dielectric anisotropy are calculated analytically in this paper using the perturbation method. It is found that the different modes of vector spherical harmonics and polarizations are coupled together in the scattering coefficients (c-matrix) in contrast to the isotropic case where all modes are decoupled from each other. The generalized c-matrix is then incorporated into our codes for a vector wave multiple scattering program; the preliminary results on face centred cubic structure show that dielectric anisotropy reduces the symmetry of the scattering c-matrix and removes the degeneracy in photonic band structures composed of isotropic dielectric spheres.

Abstract:It is emphasized that the three-dimensional time-domain wave-splitting formalism provides an ‘‘absorbing ’’ (or ‘‘radiation’’) boundary condition which is exact. When the splitting operator is known in an explicit form which can be implemented numerically, this can be used to advantage in scattering computation. In the present paper this fact is exploited in a time-domain computation of three-dimensional scattering from a slab characterized by an inhomogeneous dispersion (i.e., memory function; in general this function depends, besides on the time variable, on all three Cartesian space coordinates). Numerical results based on the exact absorbing boundary condition are given, and compared with results using a local approximation of the exact condition.

Engineering Analysis with Boundary Elements

Abstract:A scheme for electromagnetic scattering analysis of perfect electric conducting (PEC) objects using nonconformal meshes is developed in this paper. The difference of the integral operators for the electric field integral equation (EFIE) and the magnetic field integral equation (MFIE) are analyzed in detail. It is shown theoretically that basis functions used to expand the surface currents for the MFIE may not necessarily be divergence-conforming. The nonconformal meshes and monopolar n×RWG basis functions are used together to solve the MFIE. Details for the implementation of the proposed method are presented. The method is verified through the numerical results for electromagnetic scattering analysis from several PEC objects. It is shown that this method is a suitable choice for using nonconformal meshes when solving electromagnetic scattering problems with the MFIE.

Abstract:Exact radiation boundary conditions are derived from harmonic expansions in spheroidal coordinates and formulated in a finite-element method for the Helmholtz equation in unbounded domains. The use of spheroidal boundaries enables the efficient solution of scattering from elongated objects. Extending the ideas of Malhotra for the exact Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) map defined on a sphere, a matrix-free implementation of the nonlocal DtN map for spheroidal boundaries, suitable for iterative solution of the resulting complex–symmetric system, is described. Efficient SSOR preconditioners together with Eisenstat’s trick based on the sparse matrix partition associated with the interior mesh and local part of the radiation boundary operator are used to accelerate convergence of Krylov-subspace iterative solution methods. Numerical examples are computed to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the boundary treatments for high-frequency scattering from elongated structures. [Work supported by NSF PECASE.]

Abstract:This paper presents a novel approximate solution for electromagnetic scattering by planar homogeneous dielectric objects with arbitrary shape. This solution is derived by introducing a semi-empirical formula of the electrical field inside objects under consideration and by exploring the volumetric integral equation along with spectral representation of dyadic Green's function. Afterward, a closed-form approximate solution has also been established by utilizing the so-called stationary phase method (SPM). It is demonstrated that our solution is uniformly valid for planar objects with moderate electrical thickness illuminated from low to high frequencies at all incidence angles. Comparisons with a full-wave computation obtained by the method of moments (MoM) have been examined, which demonstrates that the proposed formulation can provide very accurate results and can perform much better than other existing approximate techniques.

Abstract:The validity of the singular expansion method (SEM) for transient scattering from a perfectly conducting sphere is investigated under different excitations. One of the advantages of choosing a sphere to be the scatterer is that the conclusion obtained may be more general than that drawn from a one or two-dimensional scatterer. The following conclusions are drawn: (1) using an incomplete collection of poles in the SEM expansion together with time-independent coefficients to calculate scattering current and scattered field is valid when the first creeping wave reaches the observation point; (2) the speed of the convergence of Prony series in one-direction and n-direction is mainly dependent on observation time and the properties of the excitation, respectively; and (3) SEM expansion is efficient to describe creeping wave contribution but not valid to describe the reflect portion in the response.<>

Abstract:Scattering characteristics of electromagnetic waves are analyzed by a uniformly charged coated sphere using the Lorenz -Mie theory. Numerical calculations are presented for charges on the surfaces of the interior core and exterior shell, respectively. When the surfaces are charged, the extinction efficiencies are affected by the radius ratio of the two layers and the surface potential. The scattering characteristics are further simplified to Rayleigh scattering using the Taylor expansion in a regime where scattering is significantly influenced by charges. The Rayleigh scattering in this regime can replace the analytical solution derived from the Lorenz-Mie theory. (c) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:This paper proposes an application of the boundary-element method to two-dimensional electromagnetic field problems. By this method, calculations can be performed using far fewer nodes than by the finite-element method, and unbounded field problems are easily treated without special additional consideration. In addition, the results obtained have fairly good accuracy. In this paper, analyzing procedures of electromagnetic field problems by the boundary-element method, under special conditions, are proposed and several examples are investigated.
