Abstract:We formally derive the chiral Lagrangian for low lying pseudoscalar mesons from the first principles of QCD considering the contributions from the normal part of the theory without taking an approximation. The derivation is based on the standard generating functional of QCD in the path integral formalism. The gluon-field integration is formally carried out by expressing the result in terms of the physical Green's functions of the gluon. To integrate over the quark held, we introduce a bilocal auxiliary field Phi(x,y) representing the mesons. We then develop a consistent way of extracting the local pseudoscalar degree of freedom U(x) in Phi(x,y) and integrating out the rest degrees of freedom such that the complete pseudoscalar degree of freedom resides in U(x). With certain techniques, we work out the explicit U(x) dependence of the effective action up to the p(4) terms in the momentum expansion, which leads to the desired chiral Lagrangian in which all the coefficients contributed from the normal part of the theory are expressed in terms of certain quark Green's functions in QCD. Together with the exsisting QCD formulas for the anomaly contributions, the present results lead to the complete effective chiral Lagrangian for pseudoscalar mesons. The final result can be regarded as the fundamental QCD definition of the coefficients in the chiral Lagrangian. The relation between the present QCD definition of the p(2)-order coefficient F-0(2) and the well-known appoximate result given by Pagels and Stoker is discussed.

Abstract:A previous formal derivation of the effective chiral Lagrangian for low-lying pseudoscalar mesons from first-principles QCD without approximations [Q. Wang, Y.-P. Kuang, X.-L. Wang, and M. Xiao, Phys. Rev. D 61, 054011 (2000)] is generalized to further include scalar, vector, and axial-vector mesons. In the large N-c limit and with an Abelian approximation, we show that the properties of the newly added mesons in our formalism are determined by the corresponding underlying fundamental homogeneous Bethe-Salpeter equation in the ladder approximation, which yields the equations of motion for the scalar, vector, and axialvector meson fields at the level of an effective chiral Lagrangian. The masses appearing in the equations of motion of the meson fields are those determined by the corresponding Bethe-Salpeter equation.

Abstract:We calculate the coefficients in the effective chiral Lagrangian from QCD, which includes pseudo-scalar mesons and vector mesons (with hidden symmetry), up to O(p4). This encompasses both the normal and anomalous parts. Our work builds on a previous study that derived the chiral Lagrangian from first principles of QCD, where the low-energy coefficients are defined in terms of specific Green's functions in QCD. This research extends our earlier efforts that focused on calculating the low-energy coefficients of the chiral Lagrangian for pure pseudo-scalar mesons. This marks the first calculation of chiral Lagrangian coefficients for vector mesons from QCD, particularly for the important parameters a and g, which are typically considered inputs in existing literature. Notably, the regularization method used previously is inadequate for this broader scope. We find that cut-off regularization yields reasonable results for both pseudo-scalar mesons and vector mesons, though it has certain limitations. Finally, we demonstrate that our method aligns with the Weinberg sum rules.

Abstract:In a dimensionless multi-scalar extension of the Standard Model, Gildener and Weinberg assumed that along a flat direction, there is only one classically massless scalar, known as the "scalon", which acquires mass through radiative corrections à la Coleman-Weinberg, while all other scalars remain heavy. In this paper, by introducing a toy model with four scalar degrees of freedom we show that this assumption is not always correct. In fact, we demonstrate the existence of two scalons along a specific flat direction that we construct. We present the effective potential for the model and provide the masses of the heavy scalars and two radiatively light pseudo-Goldstone bosons.

Abstract:We study a quantum field theory of quarks interacting via gluon exchange which, although it has only global colour symmetry, may be considered as a model for quantum chromodynamics. Using recently developed techniques we bosonise this theory, thus revealing the dynamical breaking of global UL(Nf) ⊗ UR(Nf) chiral symmetry. The significant feature of our analysis is a determination of the chirally symmetric, divergence free effective action for the resultant Goldstone modes. This has only become possible due to the development of a new coordinate-space expansion technique for the fermionic determinant, which supercedes our previous chirally nonsymmetric, momentum-space expansion. We emphasize that all of the coefficients appearing in the effective action are finite and are uniquely determined by the parameters in the original quark-gluon action without the need for any regularisation procedure. In particular we obtain the Wess-Zumino term and four-derivative terms including those of the Skyrme type. Further, we not only reproduce the Weinberg current algebra result for the ratio a00a02 of the S-wave ππ scattering lengths, but also predict individual values for a00 and a02.

Abstract:We calculate the coefficients in the chiral Lagrangian approximately from QCD based on a previous study of deriving the chiral Lagrangian from the first principles of QCD in which the chiral Lagrangian coefficients are defined in terms of certain Green's functions in QCD. We first show that, in the large N(c)-limit, the anomaly part contributions to the coefficients are exactly cancelled by certain terms in the normal part contributions, and the final results of the coefficients only concern the remaining normal part contributions depending on QCD interactions. We then do the calculation in a simple approach with the approximations of taking the large-N(c) limit, the leading order in dynamical perturbation theory, and the improved ladder approximation, thereby the relevant Green's functions are expressed in terms of the quark self energy. By solving the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the quark self energy, we obtain the approximate QCD predicted coefficients and the quark condensate which are consistent with the experimental values.
Complete CP-eigen Bases of Meson-Baryon Chiral Lagrangian up to $p^5$-order

Abstract:Chiral perturbation theory describes the low energy dynamics of mesons and baryons in terms of the nonlinear Goldstone boson and fermion degrees of freedom. Through the Young tensor technique, we construct the on-shell operator bases for the meson-baryon system up to $p^5$-order, using the chiral dimension power counting and heavy baryon expansion. For the Lorentz structure, additional treatments on off-shell external sources and operators with higher derivatives are necessarily considered, while for the internal structure, the invariant tensor basis is converted into the trace basis equivalently, and Cayley-Hamilton relations are utilized to classify different CP eigen-operators. Finally we present the complete operator set of $C$+$P$+, $C$+$P$-, $C$-$P$+, and $C$-$P$- eigen-operators at the $p^5$-order, and obtain the operator counting from the Hilbert series.

Two-pseudoscalar Exchanges Between Heavy Hadrons

Abstract:We calculate the two-pion and two-kaon exchange potentials of D (D) over bar and D (D) over bar* by using the Gaussian form factor to regularize loop integrals. Although the magnitude of the two-pseudo-goldstone exchange is small as expected, it is not negligible in dynamics because it modifies the shape of the potential. We find the bound state of D (D) over bar* starts to appear at the cut-off Lambda = 1360 MeV after consideration of the two-pseudo-goldstone exchange, significantly reducing the discrepancy between chiral perturbation theory and other phenomenological approaches.

Abstract:Based on a previous study of deriving the chiral Lagrangian (CL) from QCD, we illustrate the main feature of QCD predictions for the CL coefficients (CLC) in certain approximations. Abstract:Based on previous studies deriving the chiral Lagrangian for pseudo scalar mesons from the first principle of QCD in the path integral formalism, we derive the electroweak chiral Lagrangian and dynamically compute all its coefficients from the one family technicolor model. The numerical results of the p4 order coefficients obtained in this paper are proportional to the technicolor number N TC and the technifermion number N TF , which agrees with the arguments in previous works, and which confirms the reliability of this dynamical computation.

Abstract:We discuss the construction of the most general CP-violating chiral Lagrangian for an axion-like particle (ALP). Starting with an effective Lagrangian containing light quarks and gluons, we provide its matching onto a chiral effective Lagrangian at $\mathcal{O}(p^2)$ described in terms of mesons and baryons, identifying the correspondence between the Jarlskog invariants of the two theories. After deriving the ALP interactions with mesons and baryons, we analyse a few relevant phenomenological implications such as the permanent electric dipole moments of nucleons and the CP-violating ALP and kaon decays.This work provides the necessary tools for further phenomenological analyses connecting low-energy observables with the couplings of the underlying ultraviolet complete theory.

Abstract:We present results of computing the p(6) order low energy constants in the normal part of chiral Lagrangian both for two and three flavor pseudoscalar mesons. This is a generalization of our previous work on calculating the p(4) order coefficients of the chiral Lagrangian in terms of the quark self-energy Sigma(p(2)). We show that most of our results are consistent with those we can find in the literature.
Goldberger-Treiman relation and Wu-type experiment in the decuplet sector

Abstract:The leading-order chiral Lagrangian for the baryon octet and decuplet states coupled to Goldstone bosons and external sources contains six low-energy constants. Five of them are fairly well known from phenomenology, but the sixth one is practically unknown. This coupling constant provides the strength of the (p-wave) coupling of Goldstone bosons to decuplet states. Its size and even sign are under debate. Quark model and QCD for a large number of colors provide predictions, but some recent phenomenological analyses suggest even an opposite sign for the Delta-pion coupling. The Goldberger-Treiman relation connects this coupling constant to the axial charge of the Delta baryon. This suggests a Wu-type experiment to determine the unknown low-energy constant. While this is not feasible in the Delta sector because of the large hadronic width of the Delta, there is a flavor symmetry related process that is accessible: the weak semileptonic decay of the Omega baryon to a spin 3/2 cascade baryon. A broad research program is suggested that can pin down at least the rough size and the sign of the last unknown low-energy constant of the leading-order Lagrangian. It encompasses experimental measurements, in particular the forward-backward asymmetry of the semileptonic decay, together with a determination of the quark-mass dependences using lattice QCD for the narrow decuplet states and chiral perturbation theory to extrapolate to the Delta sector. Besides discussing the strategy of the research program, the present work provides a feasibility check based on a simple leading-order calculation.

Abstract:We construct the full p(6) order chiral Lagrangians for the unitary group and special unitary groups, including n(f)-, three-and two-flavor cases, all bilinear currents (scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, axial-vector, and tensor currents), and theta parameter. The number of independent operators are 1391, 1326, and 969 for each of the flavor unitary groups. From these results, we find one extra linear relation among the traditional p(4) order low-energy constants under the U(3) group, and some more linear relations with tensor sources for the p(6) order low-energy constants in the special unitary groups. We develop a scheme to obtain the relations for the dependent operators in terms of independent operators.
