Abstract:Application of ultrasound to extract a variety of biologically active compounds from plant materials has been widely investigated. However, there are few reports on the local effect of ultrasonic irradiation on the yields of these compounds. In the present article, the local effect of ultrasonic treatment on total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activities (ATT) of extracts from citrus peels was investigated. To optimize the extraction process, a response surface methodology (RSM) was used to evaluate the effects of ultrasonic variables including ultrasonic power, ultrasonic time, and extraction temperature on extracts from penggan (Citrus reticulata) peel. The results showed that TPC and ATT increased on increasing ultrasonic time and temperature. The maximum of TPC and ATT by ultrasonic treatment was observed in near ultrasonic irradiation surface, in which ultrasonic power appeared to be positive effect. Furthermore, when the effect of the 3 independent variables was evaluated simultaneously using RSM, the optimal ultrasonic conditions for responses were determined as: 42 to 45 W, 23 to 25 min, 31 to 34 degrees C. The results presented here emphasized that application of ultrasound should be considered both the optimization of ultrasonic variables and available ultrasonic device.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of the UV disinfection combined with chlorination in the inactivation of microorganisms and the formation of trihalomethanes (THMs). Experimental results showed that UV irradiation had obvious advantages in reducing the number of microbial species and community complexity. Under the same initial chlorine concentration, the amount of THMs increased with the UV radiation dose increasing. THMs will be reduced in the UV-chlorine disinfection process compared with the pure chlorine disinfection. In terms of number of surviving microorganisms in water, compared with a single chlorine disinfection, UV irradiation showed a very good disinfection effect. With an average 52.5% decline, the data reflected the sample after UV irradiation in microbial diversity and abundance significantly decreased. the physical and chemical properties of organic matter could be qualitatively and quantitatively described by 3DEEM.
Effects of TMPDO and 4-NOH-TMPD on H2O2/HTS Catalytic System for Free Radicals Generation and Its Application

Abstract:EPR technique was used to investigate the formation and variation of free radicals on the catalyst and in the liquid phase after adsorption of 2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethyl-piperdin-4-one (TMPDO) and 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperdin-4-one oxime(4-NOH-TMPD) over hollow titanium silicalite(HTS) zeolite in the presence of H2O2. The results showed that the EPR signal of HO center dot in the HTS/H2O2 system was significantly decreased after 4-NOH-TMPD adsorbed on HTS, while the signal intensity of O-2(-center dot) free radical increased by 28 times and that of TiOO-center dot increased by more than double. Moreover, Simifonia software simulation indicated that the free radicals of TiOO-center dot (eta(2)) center dot center dot center dot 4-NOH-TMPD were formed in the HTS/H2O2/4-NOH-TMPD system, and the stabilization of the double-site adsorption of 4-NOH-TMPD in HTS/H2O2 to TiOOH was the fundamental cause for the above changes. Furthermore, it was found that as 4-NOH-TMPD added into the HTS/H2O2 system, the signal of free radicals on the catalyst almost disappeared while two new free radicals were formed due to the interaction between acetone oxime in liquid phase and Ti-OO-center dot or O-2(-center dot) free radicals, giving HTS/H2O2/4-NOH-TMP system with the catalytic activity for the oxidative coupling of acetone oxime to form 2,3-dimethy1-2,3-dinitrobutane(DMNB).

Abstract:The degradation of 2,4-dichlorophoxyacetic acid (2,4-D)by using ozonation alone(O 3) or ozonation combined with sonication(O 3/US)was studied.The results showed significant synergistic effect of ozone and ultrasound.·OH radical played an important role in the degradation of 2,4-D by the O 3/US technique.Under ultrasound irradiation,mechanical effects of ultrasonic energy enhanced the mass transfer of gaseous ozone to the liquid phase.The enhancement of ultrasound was mainly attributed to that ozone decomposition could be accelerated to produce abundant radicals by cavitation effect, which resulted in high temperatures and pressures during cavitation bubbles collapse.

Abstract:Two types of siloxane foam were irradiated by an electron beam at room temperature. Changes in the chemical structure of the samples were determined by Fourier-transform infrared resonance. The gaseous products from the irradiated samples were analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy. Electron spin resonance was used to analyze the free radicals, and the compression properties were determined by a universal material tester. The results indicated that the effect of absorbed dose on the mechanical properties of polymethylvinyl siloxane foam was more pronounced than that for polymethylphenylvinyl siloxane foam. The yield of gases evolved from the radiation degradation of polymethylvinyl siloxane foam was higher than that from polymethylphenylvinyl siloxane foam. The free-radical signal from polymethylphenylvinyl siloxane foam was stronger and lasted longer than that from polymethylvinyl siloxane foam after irradiation.
A precise method to monitor hydroxyl radical in natural waters based on a fluoride-containing fluorescence probe

Abstract:In natural waters, hydroxyl radical (OH) can initiate many free radical-induced reactions, oxidizing various inorganic and organic compounds through electron transfer reactions, dehydrogenation reactions, addition reactions, and self-quenching reactions. However, due to its extremely low concentration and short lifetime in natural waters, studies on the quantitative measurement of OH levels are insufficient. In this work, we developed the first quinolinium-based fluorescence probe containing fluoride substituted donor that could detect hydroxyl radicals in the water system. This probe exhibits excellent selectivity towards OH with a large Stokes shift (114 nm) and 23-fold enhancement in fluorescence. Additionally, this probe has been proven to be low toxicity and applied to detect OH in living cells, zebrafish, and natural water samples with good recovery (over 92 %).

Abstract:The fluorescein derivants (Fluorescein: (2-(6-Hydroxy-3-oxo-(3H)-xanthen-9-yl) benzoic acid), Fluorescein-DA: (Bis [N,N-bis (carboxymethyl) aminomethyl] fluorescein) and Fluorescein-DA-Fe(III): (Bis [N,N-bis (carboxymethyl) aminomethyl] fluorescein-Ferrous(III)) with a tricyclic plane structure were used to study the interaction and sonodynamic damage to bovine serum albumin (BSA) under ultrasonic irradiation through fluorospectrometry and UV-vis spectrophotometry. Besides, because of the existence of Fe(III) ion in Fluorescein-DA-Fe(III), under ultrasonic irradiation the sonocatalytic activity in the damage of BSA molecules was also found. Three-dimensional fluorescence spectra and three-dimensional fluorescence contour profile spectra were mentioned to determine the fluorescence quenching and the conformation change of BSA in the absence and presence of these fluorescein derivants. As judged from the experimental results, the fluorescence quenching of BSA in aqueous solution caused by these fluorescein derivants were all attributed to static quenching process. The damage degree and mode were related to some factors such as ultrasonic irradiation time, fluorescein derivant concentration and ionic strength. Finally, several quenchers were used to determine the amount and kind of generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) during sonodynamic and sonocatalytic reaction processes. It suggests that these fluorescein derivants induce protein damage via various ROS, at least, including singlet oxygen ((1)O2) and hydroxyl radicals (OH). Perhaps, this paper may offer some important subjects for broadening the application of these fluorescein derivants in sonodynamic therapy (SDT) and sonocatalytic therapy (SCT) technologies for tumor treatment.
Formation Process of Thermal Damage in a Target Area of High Intensity Focused Ultrasound and Effectiveness Analysis of B-ultrasound Real-Time Monitoring

Abstract:High intensity of focused ultrasound (HIFU) is an effective tumor therapy, taking advantage of the thermal effect and cavitation effect to generate thermal damage to the target tissue. However, inaccurate ultrasonic dose control may result in ineffective or excessive treatment. Thus, real-time monitoring of the thermal damage formation process is critical. To evaluate the effectiveness of real-time monitoring of B-ultrasound, ex-vivo bovine livers were irradiated by 1.155 MHz focused ultrasound with emission time T1 of 200 ms and interval time T2 of 200 ms. For orthogonal experiments, ultrasound was irradiated at sound power of 100 W, 125 W, and 150 W for 10 s, 20 s, and 40 s, respectively. B-ultrasound image sequences are collected using a 7.5 MHz linear array and compared with backscattered echo signals and thermal damage slices, respectively, to build relationships between B-mode ultrasound monitoring and thermal effect or cavitation effect. The experimental results demonstrated that the tissue ablation process caused by thermal effect cannot be effectively monitored using B-ultrasound, but the process caused by the cavitation effect can. The analysis revealed a strong temporal correlation between the appearance of bright spots in B-ultrasound images and the sudden increase of the scattered echo power spectrum, which were caused by a large number of micro-bubbles from cavitation. The damaged cavity structure of the slices and the development trend of micro-bubbles showed a strong spatial correlation. Furthermore, the sudden increase in the scattered echo signal shows the potential of early warning of cavitation, as it is 1.2–2.0 s ahead of the bright spot in the B-ultrasound image, laying the experimental basis for improving the effectiveness of B-ultrasound monitoring in clinical HIFU surgery.
Coumarin fluorometry to quantitatively detectable OH radicals in ultrasound aqueous medium

Abstract:When ultrasound (US) was exposed to aqueous coumarin solution in air atmosphere, the UV-visible and fluorescence spectra of the probe were measured at different US exposure times. The US exposure was carried out at 43 kHz and 500 kHz with different out-put power. It was found that the 500 kHz US produced umbelliferone fluorescence, while the 43 kHz US had no fluorescence. In addition, the coumarin absorbance at 270 nm maximum was decreased with in cases of the US exposure time. In contrary, the fluorescent intensity of umbelliferone at 460 nm increased with increasing of US exposure time. This exhibited that the coumarin probe was converted to umbelliferone by the US exposure, when the 500 kHz US was operated. This was facted that the coumarin framework was caused with addition of OH groups which was generated by the 500 kHz US. Therefore, the umbelliferone fluorescent became a probe to estimate OH radical in US medium. Furthermore, the chemo-fluorometry showed that the emission maximum of the formed umbelliferone could probe the bulk pHs in the US aqueous medium.
Bactericidal effect of hydroxyl radicals generated from a low concentration hydrogen peroxide with ultrasound in endodontic treatment

Abstract:One approach to enhance the disinfection of root canals in endodontic treatment is ultrasonic irrigation with sodium hypochlorite. Reactive oxygen species, such as hydroxyl radical, are generated by biological defense systems to kill invading bacteria. Ultrasonic irrigation with hydrogen peroxide may be a promising option to increase hydroxyl radical generation. We examined the bactericidal effects of hydroxyl radical generated from low concentration hydrogen peroxide with ultrasound in vitro. An ultrasonic tip was submerged in 0.5 or 1.0 M hydrogen peroxide in a microfuge tube. hydrogen peroxide was irradiated with the ultrasound, the tip of which was maintained centered in the tube to mimic ultrasonic irrigation. Hydroxyl radical generation was assessed by electron spin resonance spectroscopy. Subsequently, Enterococcus faecalis suspension in hydrogen peroxide was prepared and irradiated as described above. Bactericidal effects were assessed by viable counting. Electron spin resonance measurements showed that hydroxyl radical generation increased significantly in a time- and dose-dependent manner (two-way analysis of variance and Tukey's test, p<0.05). Moreover, the bactericidal effects of hydrogen peroxide against Enterococcus faecalis were enhanced by ultrasonic irradiation in a time- and dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that ultrasonic irrigation in the presence of low concentration hydrogen peroxide can serve as a disinfection strategy in endodontic treatment.

Abstract:Radiation on aqueous solutions can induce water radiolysis with products of radicals, H2, H2O2, and so on, and their consequent biological effects have long been interested in radiation chemistry. Unlike the decomposition of water by electric current that produces a significant number of bubbles, the gas products from the radiolysis of water are normally invisible by bare eyes, little is known on whether nanosized bubbles can be produced and what their dynamics are upon irradiation. Here, we first presented the formation of nanoscale bulk bubbles by irradiating pure water with accelerated electrons and their concentration and size distribution changes with the dose and rate of irradiation. The nanoparticle tracking analysis showed that irradiation can actually produce a certain amount of bulk nanobubbles in pure water. They exhibited a dependence on the irradiation dose rates and irradiation doses. The results indicated that the concentration of formed bulk nanobubbles increased as the irradiation dose rates increased, but it will increase and then decrease with the increased irradiation doses. The formed bulk nanobubbles could maintain stability for several hours. Our findings will provide a new angle of view for the radiation chemistry of water, and the formed nanobubbles may help elucidate the biological effects of irradiated solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, the combination of ultrasound (US) with photolysis (UV) and water flow (WF) is thoroughly investigated for optimizing the sonochemical efficiency in a horn-type reactor under the optimal parameters of immersion depth as 274 mm, power dissipation as 450 W and initial concentration of KI solution as 0.006 mol/L, respectively. In comparison to individual ultrasound treatment, the combined approaches with US + WF, UV + WF, US + UV and US + UV + WF can effectively enhance the sonochemical efficiency, which is improved by 11 %, 45 %, 86 % and 106 %, respectively. The facts may mainly be attributed to coalescing and clustering of cavitation bubbles prevented by mixing behavior of WF and lots of hydroxyl radicals generated by water molecule homolysis of UV photolysis. This work has been clearly demonstrated that the sonochemical efficiency was remarkably improved by the combined approach of US with UV and WF.

Abstract:Salicylic acid(SA) was chosen as a model probe molecule to study the free radical production efficiency of different advanced oxidation processes,such as UV/H2O2,UV/O3 and O3.The concentration variation of SA and its hydroxylation products was monitored with high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC).The obtained results indicated that the main intermediate products of SA hydroxylation were 2,5-DHBA and 2,3-DHBA,with the initial concentration of SA 40mg/L,reaction time 10min,and oxidant dosage 2mM.Among the three kinds of advanced oxidation processes,the UV/H2O2 reaction system possessed of the highest free radical product efficiency.

Abstract:Ultrasonic irradiation holds potential for the selective oxidation of non-volatile organic substrates in the aqueous phase by harnessing hydroxyl radicals as chemical initiators. Here, a mechanistic description of hydroxyl radical-initiated glyoxal oxidation is constructed by gleaning insights from photolysis and radiation chemistry to explain the yields and kinetic trends for oxidation products. The mechanistic description and kinetic measurements reported herein reveal that increasing the formation rate of hydroxyl radicals by changing the ultrasound frequency increases both the rates of glyoxal consumption and the selectivity towards C2 acid products over those from C-C cleavage. Glyoxal consumption also occurs more rapidly and with greater selectivity towards C2 acids under acidic conditions, which favor the protonation of carboxylate intermediates into their less reactive acidic forms. Leveraging such pH and frequency effects is crucial to mitigating product degradation by secondary reactions with hydroxyl radicals and oxidation products (specifically H2O2 and •O2–). These findings demonstrate the potential of ultrasound as a driver for the selective oxidation of aldehyde functions to carboxylic acids, offering a sustainable route for converting biomass-derived platform molecules into valuable products.

Abstract:The effect of different factors on degradation of disinfectant triclosan (TCS) in aqueous solution under electron beam (EB) irradiation was investigated. In this study, ethanol was used to quench hydroxyl radical (OH) and hydrogen radical (H) so that hydrated electron (eaq) could become the primary active radical. The results showed that the higher TCS degradation rate was obtained under EB irradiation, and different factors have significant effects on TCS degradation.

Abstract:Background: Lower production of H$_2$O$_2$ in water is a hallmark of ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) compared to the conventional dose rate (CDR). However, the current computational models based on the predicted yield of H$_2$O$_2$ are in opposite of the experimental data. Methods: We construct an analytical model for the rate equation in the production of H$_2$O$_2$ from \ce{^{.}OH}-radicals and use it as a guide to propose a hypothetical geometrical inhomogeneity in the configuration of particles in the FLASH-UHDR beams. We perform a series of Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of the track structures for a system of charged particles impinging the medium in the form of clusters and/or bunches. Results: We demonstrate the interplay of diffusion, reaction rates, and overlaps in track-spacing attribute to a lower yield of H$_2$O$_2$ at FLASH-UHDR vs. CDR. This trend is reversed if spacing among the tracks becomes larger than a critical value, with a length scale that is proportional to the diffusion length of \ce{^{.}OH}-radicals modulated by a rate of decay due to recombination with other species, available within a track, and the space among the tracks. The latter is substantial on the suppressing of the H$_2$O$_2$ population at FLASH-UHDR relative to CDR. Conclusions: Based on our analysis of the present work, at FLASH-UHDR, the lower yield in H$_2$O$_2$ can be interpreted as a signature of bunching the particles in beams of ionizing radiation. The beams enter the medium in closely packed clusters and form inhomogeneities in the track-structure distribution. Thus the MC simulations based on the assumption of uniformly distributed tracks are unable to explain the experimental data.

Influence of ultrasonic field on microcystins produced by bloom-forming algae.

Abstract:Under the background of algae removal and growth inhibition by ultrasonic irradiation, the effects of ultrasonic irradiation on removal of Microcystis, the concentration variation of microcystins (MC) produced by Microcystis in Microcystis suspension, and sonochemical degradation of microcystins in water, were studied in the paper. The results showed that ultrasonic irradiation could efficiently inhibit the growth of Microcystis, and ultrasonic irradiation shorter than 5min would not introduce the increase of microcystins dissolved in Microcystis suspension simultaneity. Also, microcystins dissolved in Microcystis suspension would not increase as ultrasonic power increasing. Further research showed that microcystins were effectively degraded in ultrasonic fields. After 20min ultrasonic irradiation at 150kHz and 30W, the removal rate of microcystins reached 70%.

Abstract:Abstract The widespread use of ultrasound is due to the diversity of phenomena occurring in an ultrasonic field. Ultrasonic vibrations initiate dispersion and emulsification of substances, contribute to coagulation and degassing, affect the processes of crystallization and dissolution. It is known that ultrasound causes various chemical transformations of a substance, including oxidation reactions, reduction, polymerization, etc. Research on the chemical effects of acoustic cavitation is an important task and for this, there are a large number of different chemical dosimeters of organic and inorganic nature. However, the proposed dosimeters have both advantages and disadvantages, including a long analysis time, high measurement errors, cost analysis, the use of expensive equipment. This work shows that the known substance butyl potassium dithiocarbonate can be used as a dosimeter of the effects of acoustic cavitation, in particular, high-frequency ultrasound 1.7 MHz, and has several advantages over the commonly used dosimeters. A large synergistic effect (2.26) was shown in the oxidation of dithiocarbonate from the combined effect of two directed at each other sources of ultrasound.

Abstract:The Ultrasonic cavitation effect has been widely used in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, biomedicine, and many other fields. The quantitative characterization of ultrasonic cavitation intensity has always been a difficulty. Based on this, a fluorescence analysis method has been adopted to explore ultrasonic cavitation intensity in this paper. In the experiment of fluorescence intensity measurement, terephthalic acid (TA) was used as the fluorescent probe, ultrasonic power, ultrasonic frequency, and irradiation time were independent variables, and fluorescence intensity and fluorescence peak area were used as experimental results. The collapse of cavitation bubble will cause molecular bond breakage and release ·OH, and the non-fluorescent substance TA will form the strong fluorescent substance TAOH with ·OH. The spectra of the treated samples were measured by a F-7000 fluorescence spectrophotometer. The results showed that the fluorescence intensity and fluorescence peak area increased rapidly after ultrasonic cavitation treatment, and then increased slowly with the increase of ultrasonic power, which gradually increased with the increase of irradiation time. They first decreased and then increased with the increase of ultrasonic frequency from 20 kHz to 40 kHz. The irradiation time was the most influential factor, and the cavitation intensity of low frequency was higher overall. The fluorescence intensity and fluorescence peak area of the samples increased by 2–20 times after ultrasonic treatment, which could increase from 69 and 5238 to 1387 and 95451, respectively. After the irradiation time exceeded 25 min, the growth rate of fluorescence intensity slowed down, which was caused by the decrease of gas content and TA concentration in the solution. The study quantitatively characterized the cavitation intensity, reflecting the advantages of fluorescence analysis, and provided a basis for the further study of ultrasonic cavitation.
