Abstract:With the method of Maker fringe, second-harmonic generation (SHG) was observed in Ge–As–S glasses irradiated by electron beam. It is related to the space–charge electrostatic field which makes the glasses poled and breaks the centrosymmetry of the glasses. So one new ministructure is formed and can keep constant for a long time, which makes the glasses difficult to restore relaxationally to its origin state and induces SHG. Second-order nonlinearity χ(2) as high as 0.8 pm/V was obtained. The results of thermally stimulated depolarization current measurements indicated that the poled regions were located at the superficial layers of the glass surfaces (several micrometers), which were the same as the calculated result in theory. The nonlinearities in Ge–As–S glasses are stable.

Abstract:Second harmonic generation has been observed from CdSxSe1-x microcrystallite doped glass, which is electrically polarized at 200��C for 60 min under an applied DC field of 7kV. To explain the effect, it is proposed that the second order nonlinear polarization results from the dipole orientation in the glass.

Abstract:We discuss design and tuning of second-harmonic generation in a GaAs microdisk. Quasi-phasematching is automatically achieved in a microdisk geometry, but efficient mixing requires resonating all waves, which leads to stringent tuning requirements.

Abstract:Utilizing Maker fringe method, second-harmonic generation (SHG) of electrical poled chalcogenide glasses in the GeS2 systems including GeS2-X2S3-CdS (X=Ga, Sb) and GeS2-Ga2S3- Y2S3 (Y=P, As, Sb) were studied. The experiment results indicate that the values of second-order nonlinearity induced in chalcogenide glasses have tight relations with glass composition and poling conditions, and the mechanism can be explained by dipole reorientation model.

Abstract:The Maker fringe patterns of second harmonic generation (SHG) signals were measured in 0.43PbO/B2O3 glass samples poled at 2.5, 4.0 and 5.5 kV with a constant poling temperature of 400degreesC and a poling time of 120 min. By fitting theoretical Maker patterns to the experiment, a relationship between the thickness of the nonlinear layer in the glass sample and the poling voltage was obtained. By observing the change of polarised Raman spectra of samples before and after thermal poling, information was obtained regarding the structural origin of the second order nonlinearity (SON) in a lead borate glass. Compared with the normalised peak at 1350 cm(-1) before poling, the band intensity at 770 and 980 cm(-1) increased after poling. After poling, the band intensity at 980 cm(-1) in the VV spectrum, in which the polarisation of both the incident and the scattering lights are parallel to the direction of applied poling electric field E-P, is higher than that in the HH spectrum, in which the polarisation of both are vertical to E-P It was found for the first time that the asymmetric three coordinated borate units in the diborate groups play an important role in the SON of lead borate glass.

Abstract:Utilizing the Maker fringe method, SHG was observed in the 0.95GeS2·0.05In2S3 chalcogenide glass irradiated by the electron beam and the intensity of SH increases with the enhancement of beam current from 15 to 25nA. According to Raman spectra of the as-prepared and the irradiated one, no distinct micro-structural transformation was found. In this work, the built-in charge model was founded to interpret the poling mechanism of electron beam irradiation, the emission of the secondary electrons and Auger electrons results in the formation of positive region and the absorbed electrons form negative region. The positive region was situated near the poling surface, and the negative region was much deeper than the positive region. Between the two opposite charged regions, a strong space-charge electrostatic field, Edc, is created, which leads to the nonzero χ(2) in the 0.95GeS2·0.05In2S3 glass. The emission of backscattered electrons does no contribution to the formation of Edc.

Abstract:By investigating the Second-Harmonic Generation (SHG) of the bulk PbO/B2O3 glass sample with different compositions after thermopoling, it was found that there was an optimal poling temperature for each sample with different composition and there was a relation between optimal temperature and glass transition temperature. At their own optimal temperatures, samples had different frequency doubling efficiencies. We also found that the frequency doubling efficiency increased with the increase in poling voltage. We used a model of the release of effective dipoles which had been proposed to explain the super-quadratic relation between the second-order nonlinearity and the poling voltage of the bulk PbO/B2O3 glass.

Abstract:Second harmonic generation has been observed in electrically polarized CuCl-microcrystallite-doped glass. The glass was prepared by means of melting–quenching method and poled at 200°C for 1 h under applied dc field of 4 kV. The incident angular variation of SHG intensity for the polarized glass was measured. To explain the effect, it is proposed that the second-order nonlinear polarization results from the dipolar orientation in the glass.

Abstract:After thermally poled, second-harmonic generation was observed from 0.85GeS2·0.1Sb2S3·0.05CdS chalcogenide glass by using the Maker fringe method, and the second-order nonlinearity (SON) susceptibility, χ(2), is 9pm/V at maximum. The stability of SON is excellent and its theoretical decaying time according to the thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) measurement is as long as 654 days. The origin of SON, the effects of poling parameters and the reasons of angle variation of maximum SH intensity in Maker fringe, were discussed based on dipole reorientation model. With its large and stable SON, this novel nonlinear chalcogenide glass is a very promising material that can be applied to many optical fields in the future.

Abstract:Making use of bound states in the continuum, we present experimental results on efficient second harmonic generation in photonic crystal cavities supporting doubly-resonant modes. The second harmonic emission is a vortex beam with radial polarization and exhibits highly directional far-field emission in normal direction.

Abstract:The influence of electric of poling conditions on the optical nonlinearity of fused silica has been investigated by the second harmonic generation (SHG) technique. The SHG intensity of the poled fused silica increased monotonically with increasing the poling voltage or poling time, and reached a maximum at a poling temperature of T = 250°C, but the SHG intensity decreased quickly as the thermal erasure time increased. The experimental results have been explained using an electric field induced dipole orientation model.

Abstract:Second-harmonic generation in 60GeS(2)-2OGa(2)S(3)-20KBr chalcohalide glass was investigated by the thermal poling method. A large second-order nonlinear susceptibility, as high as 7.0 pm/V, was obtained in a poled sample by Maker fringe analysis. We believe this to be the first time that a clear second-harmonic wave was observed in chalcohalide glasses containing large amount of alkali ions (6.25 at. %). Such observation is of great potential use in all optical waveguide devices. (c) 2006 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:It is found that the second harmonic generation in fused silica caused by electrical poling at elevated temperature is dependent upon the electrical poling temperature and voltage. By poling glasses with a certain voltage, the second harmonic generation (SHG) intensity acquires a maximum value at a moderate temperature, while the SHG intensity increases with the rise of poling voltage and reaches the saturation gradually when the poling temperature is fixed. The experimental results can be explained reasonably by the dipole orientation model for the electroinduced second order nonlinear polarization in glasses.

Abstract:Due to the Joule heating effect induced by the use of an assisting electric field, glass wafer temperature is experimentally found to increase synchronically with the flow of current during the process of field-assisted ion diffusion. A theoretical analysis demonstrates that the amplitude of the glass wafer temperature increase is dictated by competition between two factors, heat generation and heat dissipation. Heat generation and heat dissipation both become stronger as the glass wafer temperature increases. Studies have shown that the Joule heating effect can influence the waveguide manufacturing process profoundly, including aspects such as the stability of ion diffusion, theoretical modeling of the ion-diffusion process, and waveguide depth uniformity over the glass wafer. Abstract:For the second harmonic generation at metal suriaces, the existing theoretial results obtained from hydrodynamics and the density functional theory are one order of magnitude deviated from the experimental data. We calculate the second harmonic generation at Al, Mg and Ag surfaces by using the correlated basis function theory. Since the electron correlation can be considered more property in this approach, our theoretical results are closer to the experimental data.

Abstract:Fused silica glass samples poled by different methods showed large differences in their second-order optical nonlinearities. Large second-harmonic signals were obtained only when a depletion layer was formed near the anode surface. By comparing the influences of plate poling and corona poling, the necessary conditions to form a depletion layer in fused silica glass are discussed.

Abstract:With plane-wave expansion and the Green function method, the second harmonic generation in a two-dimensional metal photonic band gap (PBG) material is studied theoretically. By appropriately selecting the structural parameters of the PBG material, the wave vectors of the fundamental and the second harmonics can be set at the edges of the PBG. In this case, the second harmonic can be realized efficiently due to metal surface nonlinearity. The discussion can be generalized to three-dimensional systems.

Abstract:We have theoretically analyzed the effects of externally applied fields (magnetic and intense laser) as well as various structural parameters such as well width, barrier width, barrier height, and structural asymmetry on the second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients of GaAs/Al 0.3 Ga 0.7 As Harmonic-Gaussian asymmetric double quantum wells (QW). The time-independent Schrödinger equation was solved using the diagonalization method and effective mass approximation to obtain the energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the structure. An expression derived within the compact density matrix approach has been used to evaluate the second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient. Our numerical results indicate that increasing the magnitude of the magnetic (intense laser) field causes the peak positions of SHG to shift towards higher energy regions/blue (lower energy regions/red). On the other hand, as the structural parameters A 1 and A 2 ( k and z 0 ) increase, the peak positions of the SHG coefficients exhibit a shift towards higher energy regions/blue (lower energy regions/red). We expect that the results of our study will contribute to the development of new optoelectronic devices based on the Harmonic-Gaussian asymmetric double quantum well structure.

Theoretical Analysis of Thermal/Electric-Filed Poling Silica Glass

Abstract:Based on the experimental results, three basic conclusions are summarized for the thermal/electric-field poling (TEFP) silica materials, with which the second-order nonlinear optical coefficient in the bulk silica glass after TEFP is calculated, and relationships between the coefficient and the applied voltage V 0 in the poling process and the thickness of the nonlinear layer created from the poling are obtained. Theoretical results show that the second-order susceptibility χ(2) and the second-harmonic efficiency η in the poled bulk glass are proportional to √V 0 and V 0 2 , respectively; χ(2)∼0.2−1.6 pm/V for the bulk glass after the typical TEFP; χ(2) decreases with an increase in the poling time after the TEFP silica glass approximately reaches the steady state. Theoretical results are well consistent with the experimental reports.
