Abstract:Objective: To explore the clinical and diagnostic characteristics of Ataxia-telangiectasia (AT) and evaluate the diagnostic values of examinations of alpha fetoprotein (AFP), immunoglobin, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). Methods: A clinical, laboratory and tomography analysis of 7 cases of Ataxia-telangiectasia was presented. Results: The clinical features consisted of the onset before seven years old, progressive ataxia, dysphasia, nystagmas, oculocutaneous telangiectasia, hypotonia, hyporeflexia, worsening intelligence, skin pigmentation, and recurrent pulmonary infection. The alpha fetoprotein levels were 50 ~ 400 μg/L which were higher than normal, whereas the IgA and IgG levels are 190 ~ 940 mg/L and 1100 ~ 6 840 mg/L respectively which were lower than normal. The SPECT had high sensitivity to show the hypoperfusion of regional cerebral blood flow, MRI showed compatible evidence of cerebellar atrophy. Conclusions: Ataxia-telangiectasia is characterized by progressive cerebellar ataxia, oculocutaneous telangiectasia, and recurrent infection due to immunodeficiency. The examinations of AFP, immunoglobin, MRI and the SPECT can play important roles in the diagnosis of AT.
