Abstract:Shape memory polymers (SMPs), as a class of programmable stimuli-responsive shape changing polymers, are attracting increasing attention from the standpoint of both fundamental research and technological innovations. Following a brief introduction of the conventional shape memory effect (SME), progress in new shape memory enabling mechanisms and triggering methods, variations of in shape memory forms (shape memory surfaces, hydrogels, and microparticles), new shape memory behavior (multi-SME and two-way-SME), and novel fabrication methods are reviewed. Progress in thermomechanical modeling of SMPs is also presented.

Abstract:After being severely and quasi-plastically deformed, shape memory materials are able to return to their original shape at the presence of the right stimulus. After a brief presentation about the fundamentals, including various shape memory effects, working mechanisms, and typical shape memory materials for biomedical applications, we summarize some major applications in shaping tissue with shape memory materials. The focus is on some most recent development. Outlook is also discussed at the end of this paper.

Abstract:Due to the intrinsic properties of polymers, medical applications have been the primary targets for the development of shape memory polymers (SMPs) exhibiting softness at body temperature, biocompatibility, high deformability, good shape recovery (Rr) and good shape fixity (Rf). However, there is an increasing need for developing smart materials that would meet the drastically different requirements imposed by applications where, instead, high strength well above room temperature, durability, stability, and high thermo-mechanical endurance are necessary. Here, we present results obtained on a series of shape memory (SM) epoxies that appear promising base materials for such applications. The influence of molecular and structural design on their physical and SM properties were studied. The impact of various SM programming conditions (i.e., deformation load, recovery heating rate, number of cycles, and isothermal holding times in the hot and cold deformed shapes) was also investigated. The instantaneous SM behavior was found similar for all the networks with Rf and Rr values nearing 100% above 6 to 7% strain. The SM performances strongly depended on the strain-dependent thermal expansion/contraction of the materials during thermo-mechanical cycling. Networks with lower crosslink density, higher chain flexibility and/or mobility showed reduced SM performances, further diminished by more stringent thermo-mechanical cycling conditions.

Abstract:Most of shape memory alloys are functional intermetallics. They are now practically being used for couplings, actuators, medical guide wires etc., and are hopeful candidates for smart materials, which already exist. In the present paper, recent developments within nearly 10 years on shape memory alloys and martensitic: transformations, on which shape memory effect and superelasticity are based, were concisely reviewed. Since Ti–Ni alloys are the best practical shape memory alloys, we mostly discussed on the alloys, but we discussed more general problems as well. Furthermore, we discussed the ductility and density of point defects in intermetallics, since they are important problems in intermetallics in general. At the end we introduced some recent applications of shape memory alloys briefly.

The present biomedical and engineering applications are also reviewed. Finally, the prospective research directions of bulk ultrafine grained TiNi-based shape memory alloys in the future are forecasted.

Abstract:Shape memory polymer (SMP) and SMP composites (SMPC) can memorize the permanent shape and recover from the temporary shape to the permanent shape when stimulated by the appropriate stimuli. Because of the unique shape memory effect, coupled with its low cost, low density, high specific strength, biodegradability, biocompatibility, and other characteristics, SMP and SMPC have become possible materials to solve the problems currently faced by space deployable structures, biomedical devices, mold manufacturing, release devices, etc. This work reviews the research and developments of SMP and SMPC, including the achievements in constitutive theory, the applications, and prospects in aerospace, biomedical medicine, intelligent mold, and release devices.

Abstract:The superelasticity is one of the most important properties of TiNi alloy, which has been widely used in the smart systems of many fields, such as aerospace, aviation, biomedicine and energy etc. The current state of superelasticity of TiNi alloy has been reviewed with emphasis on the superelasticity, phase transformations, thermo-mechanical treatment and their relationship. The mechanisms of linear superelasticity and non-linear superelasticity have been revealed. Some successful applications based on the superelasticity of TiNi alloys in smart systems have been introduced.

Abstract:Shape memory materials are materials with special functions set of sensing and actuation in one. The shape memory alloy is one of the most important materials in shape memory materials. Shape memory alloy is a kind of alloy that alloy with initial shape in low temperature by the plastic deformation and fixed into another shape, by heating to a temperature above the critical, can be restored into the initial shape. The characteristic of shape memory alloy mainly has the shape memory effect and super elastic effect. Nickel titanium memory alloy is not used in the fracture of limbs, in recent years are also used in the spine and femoral head fracture. Nickel titanium memory alloy has good biocompatibility, and has the characteristics of super elasticity, low magnetic, wear resistance, fatigue resistance, corrosion resistance, as a novel material for internal fixation in the treatment of sports injuries are widely used.

Abstract:As a kind of intelligent material, shape memory polymer (SMP) can respond to outside stimuli and possesses good properties including shape memory effect, deformability and biological compatibility, etc. SMPs have been introduced for medical applications such as tissue engineering, biological sutures, stents and bladder sensors. Due to the shape memory effect, the medical devices based on SMP can be implanted into body through minimally invasive surgery in contraction or folded state and recovered to their requisite original shapes at target position. In this paper, a review of SMPs utilized in biomedical applications and their actuation methods are listed. Various biomedical applications and potential applications based on the beneficial properties of SMP are also summarized.

Abstract:The recent development of TiNi-based shape memory alloys(SMAs) and their applications were reviewed in this paper.The martensitic transformation behaviors of TiNi-based SMAs,TiNi-based high temperature SMAs,TiNi-based SMA thin films,TiNi-based composite materials and the applications of TiNi-based SMAs were summarized.It has been presented that the functionality,stability and integration is the main trend of research and development of TiNi-based SMAs.The possible near development directions of TiNi-based SMAs were forecasted.

Abstract:The development, application and related industry state of the nickel-titanium alloys in the past 40 years were reviewed. The nickel-titanium alloys have been extensively used in the fields of aerospace, machinery, electronics, chemistry, energy sources, architecture and daily life due to their excellent mechanical property, corrosion resistance, shape memory effect, superelasticity, damping property and biocompatibility. Overviewing the global NiTi industry, the oversea market gets the major profits from the superelastic interventional products instead of the engineering and commodity products, and a good industry structure has been established for the primary materials, semi-products, final products manufacturing. The international market for NiTi products are promising. For the domestic shape memory alloys industry, the fundamental research works have been done very well, and a healthy development can be realized through making a close cooperation relations between enterprises and avoiding the malignant competition.

Abstract:Ni-free shape memory alloys are promising functional materials for medical applications. A newly developed Ti-Mo based shape memory alloy shows superelasticity after thermomechanical treatment. However, the microstructure evolution and precipitation during thermomechanical processes are still not well understood. In the present paper, compressive deformation behavior at a series of temperatures of 298K - 973K and tensile deformation behavior of the alloy after aged at 573K - 973K have been investigated systematically. It is found that the compressive yield stress and ultimate compressive strength change with the deformation temperature. The ultimate tensile strength and yield stress of aged specimens also change with the aging temperature following a non-linear relationship. Microstructures of aged specimens as well as effects of lattice softening and aging-induced precipitates on the deformation behavior have been investigated and discussed. © 2011 SPIE.

Abstract:We perform molecular dynamics simulations to show that shape memory alloy nanoparticles below the critical size not only demonstrate superelasticity but also exhibit features such as absence of hysteresis, continuous nonlinear elastic distortion, and high blocking force. Atomic level investigations show that this nonhysteretic superelasticity results from a continuous transformation from the parent phase to martensite under external stress. This aspect of shape memory alloys is attributed to a surface effect; i.e., the surface locally retards the formation of martensite and then induces a critical-end-point-like behavior when the system is below the critical size. Our work potentially broadens the application of shape memory alloys to the nanoscale. It also suggests a method to achieve nonhysteretic superelasticity in conventional bulk shape memory alloys.

Abstract:Shape memory polymers (SMPs), as a type of smart materials, possess the unique shape memory and deformation recovery abilities. Hence, SMPs have been attracted extensive attentions and widely used in fields of electric devices, aerospace structures and biomedical engineering. Chitosan (CS), as a renewable natural biomass material, exhibits the excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability and antibacterial activities. Using biomass CS as SMPs matrix materials could greatly enhance the environmental friendliness and adaptability, promoting the applications in fields of biomedical engineering and smart devices. This paper provides a detailed overview of current research progress about CS-based SMPs, including diverse stimuli responsiveness, multifunctionalities and various applications. Though, the research on CS-based SMPs is still in the early stage, which exhibits extensive prospect and potential, and could be of significance in advancing smart biomedical technologies.
