Abstract:Universal approximation is the basis of theoretical research and practical applications of fuzzy systems. Studies on the universal approximation capability of fuzzy systems have achieved great progress in recent years. In this paper, linear Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy systems that use linear functions of input variables as rule consequent and their special case, named simplified fuzzy systems that use fuzzy singletons as rule consequent, are investigated. On condition that overlapped fuzzy sets are employed, new sufficient conditions for simplified fuzzy systems and linear TS fuzzy systems as universal approximators are given, respectively. Then, a comparative study on existing sufficient conditions is carried out with numeric examples

Abstract:A formula is first presented to compute the lower upper bounds on the number of fuzzy sets to achieve pre-specified approximation accuracy for an arbitrary multivariate continuous function. The necessary condition for Boolean fuzzy systems as universal approximators with minimal system configurations is then discussed. Two examples are provided to demonstrate how to design a Boolean fuzzy system in order to approximate a given continuous function with a required approximation accuracy.

Abstract:As the basis of theoretical research and practical applications of fuzzy systems, studies on fuzzy systems as universal approximators achieve great progress. However, only a few papers in the literature investigate sufficient conditions for fuzzy systems as universal approximators. This paper presents a new sufficient condition under which the linear T-S fuzzy systems can uniformly approximate any real continuous functions defined on a compact set to any degree of accuracy. Numerical examples demonstrate that our result is obviously better than currently available results.

Abstract:Focusing on whether fuzzy system can approximate any given function, the sufficient and necessary theory of one type of fuzzy systems as universal approximators was investigated. Mamdani fuzzy systems with product inference engine ( PIE) and mean of maximum ( MOM) defuzzificator can be classified two cases according to rule consequent: simple point rule consequent and fuzzy set rule consequent. Based on Weierstrass's first theorem and properties of membership functions, sufficient and necessary condition is proved respectively. A simulation example is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Special Mamdani fuzzy systems are multi-input single-output Mamdani fuzzy systems with fuzzy singletons as rule consequent. Under the condition that functions are continuous and piecewise differentiable, it was proved that special Mamdani fuzzy systems are universal approximators. A sufficient condition was given for the special Mamdani fuzzy systems to uniformly approximate any real continuous function on a compact set.

Abstract:It has been proven that fuzzy systems are universal approximators. However,a large number of rules are usually needed for high accuracy. Knowledge of conditions necessary for a fuzzy system to have a given level of accuracy can provide guidance for design of an optimal system,such as selection of optimal input/output fuzzy sets and fuzzy rules. The necessary conditions for a single-input single-output (SISO) Mamdani fuzzy system to operate as a function approximator subject to a given precision were discussed. Since the general SISO Mamdani fuzzy system is monotonic at subintervals,its optimal configuration is when the number of division points is not less than the number of times its monotonicity changes. Thus by analyzing the local characteristics of the object function under the fuzzy system,necessary conditions for a SISO Mamdani fuzzy systems were obtained in accordance with the extrema of the object function. Furthermore,it was shown that the necessary conditions found in prior documents are only a special case of those described here. Finally,simulation examples were given to verify our conclusions and analyze the performance as well as the limitations of a fuzzy system as a function approximator.

Abstract:Given a prescribed accuracy, necessary and sufficient conditions are investigated for general single input/single output (SISO) Mamdani fuzzy systems as approximators of continuous functions defined on compact domain. Since general SISO Mamdani fuzzy systems are monotonic on subintervals, necessary conditions for fuzzy systems on a given accuracy have been established firstly with the extreme of the desired continuous function. Simultaneously, a dynamically constructive method is proposed to show the conditions are sufficient. Furthermore, it is shown that existing results concerning necessary conditions are only special cases of ours. The necessary and sufficient conditions can not only be used practically to determine input/output fuzzy sets, and fuzzy rules for fuzzy systems, but also provide guidance on the membership function design. Finally, simulation examples are given to illustrate the conclusions and analyze the strength as well as the limitation of the fuzzy systems as function approximators: the number of fuzzy rules increases with the number of extreme whose swings are larger than the accuracy, not associated with the function’s formulation.

Abstract:The multi-input single-output T-Sfuzzy systems investigated in this paper,named as typical T-Sfuzzy systems,use linear functions of input variables as rule consequents.On the condition that fuzzy sets of each input variable are consistent and all the membership functions are continuous and piecewise differentiable,we proved that typical T-S fuzzy systems are universal approxiators.Based on the proof,we further pointed out that it's feasible to modify only the rule consequent parameters of typical T-S fuzzy systems when it carries out online learning,however the universal approximation capability is still ensured.

Abstract:Study on approximation capabilities of fuzzy systems has been an important and hot issue for many years. Many existing studies on fuzzy systems based on standard affine TS fuzzy models suffer seriously from curse of dimensionality though such models are relatively simple to construct; whereas other investigations based on hierarchical fuzzy models have to face the difficulty of relatively more complexity. Through utilizing the dynamic partition along all dimensions, this paper proposes a novel dynamically constructive method in MISO cases to construct fuzzy systems based on standard affine TS fuzzy models, which have simple structures and also can ease the serious curse of dimensionality greatly. Correspondingly, new sufficient conditions for a affine TS fuzzy system as an universal approximator are obtained. The situation in 2ISO cases is derived first which is then extended to general MISO cases. Theoretical analyses comparing to some typical methods and several numerical examples all confirm that the dynamic method in this paper can reduce the fuzzy rules number dramatically and therefore can ease the serious curse of dimensionality to some extent. Some conclusions and discussions on further work are also given.

Abstract:In this paper, a combined method is proposed for providing a new sufficient condition for linear T-S fuzzy systems as an universal approximator in MISO case. Such work extends existing methods in SISO case and is superior to the existing results in MISO case by combining the statically and dynamically constructive methods. After comparing with some other typical methods, detailed theoretical reasoning and numerical example both confirm that the method in this paper will reduce the fuzzy rules number dramatically. At last, some conclusions and discussion on further work are also given.

Abstract:The main results on the approximation theory of fuzzy systems up to date were reviewed and analyzed.These results include existence theorems,sufficient conditions,necessary conditions and the nature on both Madani fuzzy systems and T-S fuzzy systems as function approximators.Moreover several effective approaches of fuzzy systems construction were introduced,including the adaptive-fuzzy-logic-system approach,adaptive-network-based fuzzy system(ANFIS) approach,fuzzy clustering approach and binary linear fuzzy tree structure approach.In the end,some directs of its development were proposed.

Abstract:In this paper, necessary conditions are investigated for a single input/single output (SISO) Mamdani fuzzy systems as function approximators of continuous functions within a given accuracy. Since general SISO Mamdani fuzzy systems are monotonic on subintervals, the optimal configuration of fuzzy systems is that the number of division points is at least the times of its monotonicity changes. Thus with the extreme of the desired continuous function, necessary conditions are obtained through generating intervals that contain division points and pruning redundant intervals. Furthermore, a dynamically constructive method is proposed to show the conditions are optimal. It has been shown that existing results concerning necessary conditions are only special cases of our results. Finally, simulation examples are given to illustrate the conclusions, the strength of the fuzzy systems as function approximators are analyzed.

Abstract:It is proved that the single input and single output (SISO) fuzzy systems based upon genuine many-valued implications are universal approximators. It is shown theoretically that fuzzy control systems based upon genuine many-valued implications are equivalent to those based upon t-norm implications, the general approach to construct fuzzy systems is given. It is also shown that defuzzifier based upon center of areas is not appropriate to the fuzzy systems based upon genuine many-valued implications.

Abstract:Approximation. properties of T-S fuzzy systems are analyzed, it is proved that T-S fuzzy systems with given structure have approximation precision of third order, and the estimation of approximation error is calculated. In the end, by comparing performance of T-S fuzzy systems with that of Mamdani fuzzy systems, and it is indicated that approximation properties of T-S fuzzy systems is more satisfying than that of Mamdani fuzzy systems in given condition.

Abstract:This paper presents a new method of approximating fuzzy decision concepts by using fuzzy condition concepts. The rough approximation of fuzzy concepts is investigated based on the idea of abstract approximation space in rough set theory. A weak approximation space and a CN-fuzzy rough set are defined in fuzzy decision systems by means of a family of fuzzy condition concepts, from which the values of lower and upper approximation of each object may be determined. Therefore, a decision making about fuzzy concept is obtained.

Abstract:The analysis of the multi-input fuzzy system can become unfunctable as the system size increases.A binary tree-type hierarchical fuzzy system was developed to simplify analysis of large fuzzy systems and the universal approximation of the system is also analyzed.Piecewise linear functions and the Mean Value Theorem are used to prove that the model has the universal approximation property and give the sufficient condition.Contrasting to normal fuzzy systems,hierarchical fuzzy systems have much less fuzzy rules.A simulation example demonstrates that to achieve the same approximation accuracy,hierarchical fuzzy systems use only about one tenth as many as the rules of normal fuzzy systems,greatly simplifying the design.

Abstract:In this paper, a supremum of the total numbers of fuzzy rules is obtained by employing the characteristics of the function in building a fuzzy model to approximate the function to achieve a given approximation accuracy. The basic idea is to take advantage of the presentation of mean square error to formulate the supremum of the total numbers of fuzzy rules. The supremum relates approximation accuracy, the measurement and dimension of the domain of function, and the derivative or circumflexion of the function. Further, the influence of membership functions on the total number of fuzzy rules of T-S fuzzy model is analyzed when T-S fuzzy model is applied to function approximation. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the ideas and results. Applications and potentials are discussed.

Abstract:Based on input / output( I / O) data of an unknown system,a new method for constructing a fuzzy system adaptively,which meets the accuracy requirements of the system,is put forward. To optimize the system rules,a new algorithm based on the binary search algorithm is designed,which can obtain an upper limit of rules to meet the accuracy requirements. Subsequently,the complexity of the algorithm is analyzed from the perspective of the algorithm running time,and the formula for estimating running time of the algorithm is proposed. The simulation data shows that the method is feasible and effective.
