Abstract:This paper discusses the trend and foreground of Virtual Prototyping (VP) technology within and outside China. Combining, the advanced design technology and manufacturing technology and management technology, we propose a frame of VP supporting environment. Regarding real product development process as demand, keeping VP development processing as kernel and using PDM as the fundamental supporting, this frame realizes the digital design, modularization, storage and usage, data transferring and sharing etc. of design data. It uses CAx to carry out product digital modeling and simulation, DFx technology to comprehensively consider various factors in product life cycle during the early product development, tools of simulation and virtual reality to build up the evaluation and visual user interface of VP. We also study the development method of railway rolling stocks. We divide the development of VP into four levels. In each level the development process is spiral and iterative, while between levels the process is waterfall-like. This defines a reasonable structure of VP's development. Also we present an application example of VP environment in railway rolling stocks industry. Although this supporting environment frame of VP is proposed aiming at the railway rolling stocks industry, it is valuable to other industries in improving development capability, product quality and reducing development cost which will ultimately promote the enterprise competitiveness.
