Abstract:Green's functions for axisymmetric problems of a piezoelectric half-space have been included in a recent paper of Ding et al. (1999). It is found, however, some terms in the solution have been missed there. In this paper, a complete and exact solution is presented.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the problem of point force and point charge applied in the interior of an infinite two-phase transversely isotropic piezoelectric solid. Based on the general solutions, by using the method of the image source, a series of displacement functions are constructed. The Green's functions are obtained when arbitrary constants are determined by the boundary conditions on the interface. Furthermore, we reduce the present solutions to the extension of Mindlin results and of Lorentz results for semi-infinite transversely isotropic piezoelectric materials by suitable substitutions of boundary conditions on the interface.

Abstract:In this paper, a general solution for dynamic piezothermoelastic problems of transversely isotropic piezoelectric materials is derived. The general solution reduces to solutions for quasi-static problems when inertia terms are disregarded. The present general solution is similar to that proposed by Ashida et al. in form. But, the derivation is more concise and rigorous without integration operation. Thus, it is more convenient for application. Applying this general solution, the static problem of a half-space subjected to axisymmetric heating and quasi-static problem of response of a rectangular plate are studied. Numerical results are presented.

Abstract:Based on the fundamental solutions for transversely isotropic piezoelectric materials, the fundamental solutions of axisymmetric problems are derived by integration and explicit expressions for three possible cases of different characteristic roots and multiple roots are all presented. In the case of s1 ≠ s2 ≠ s3 ≠ s1, based on the Greens functions for semi-infinite piezoelectric body and bimaterial infinite piezoelectric body, the Greens functions for axisymmetric problems of semi-infinite body and bimaterial infinite body are obtained. Taking PZT-4 as an example, numerical computations are conducted by use of the fundamental solutions to axisymmetric problems. Comparison of the calculated results with those of FEM shows good agreement between them.

Abstract:First, on the basis of the governing equations of piezoelectric materials, a displacement function is introduced and the general solutions are derived. Second, by employing the generalized Almansi's theorem, these solutions are further simplified, i.e. all physical quantities are expressed in three displacement functions psi(i) (i = 1,2,3), which satisfy, respectively, three similar harmonic second-order partial differential equations. Then the Green's functions for point forces and point charge acting in the interior of a two-phase infinite piezoelectric plane are given using the method of mirror image source. The paper is concluded by a discussion of some special cases, in which the point force and charge solutions for an infinite uniform piexoelectric plane and for a half-plane with free or fixed straight boundary are given.

Abstract:Three general solutions are obtained for the coupled dynamic equations for a transversely isotropic piezoelectric medium. These solutions are expressed in terms of the two functions ψ and F, where ψ satisfies a second-degree partial differential equation and F a sixth-degree partial differential equation, respectively. If the terms concerning the derivatives of time are removed, the results become three general solutions for the corresponding equilibrium equations, in which the function F can be represented by functions Fi (i = 1, 2, 3), each of which satisfies a second-degree partial differential equation by utilizing a generalized Almansi theorem; and the solution Wang and Zheng [Int. J. Solids Structures32, 105–115 (1995)] obtained is proved to be consistent with one case of one of the three general solutions. When the constants e15 = e31 = e33 = 0 the piezo-electric coupling is absent; then, two of the solutions reduce to the elasticity general solutions for a transversely isotropie medium, one of which is the result Hu [Acta Scientia Sin.2(2), 145–151 (1953)] obtained; the other one has not been published. Last, the solution in the limiting explicit form for the problem for a half-space with concentrated loads at the boundary is obtained by utilizing the general solutions.

Engineering Analysis with Boundary Elements

Abstract:This paper summarizes our work on Green's functions and boundary element method for transversely isotropic piezoelectric materials. These include the two-dimensional (2D) Green's functions of a two-phase infinite plane, from which the fundamental solutions of an infinite piezoelectric plane and an infinite half-pane can be easily derived, as well as their 3D counterparts. All the results are obtained in an exact and explicit way and hence are very convenient to be used in the associated computation with boundary element method. Numerical examples are also given.

Abstract:In this paper, a general solution for three-dimensional static piezothermoelastic problems of crystal class 6mm solids is presented. The general solution involves four piezoelastic potential functions and a piezorhermoelastic potential function, of which four piezoelastic potential functions are governed by weighted harmonic differential equations. Compared with the general solution given by Ashida et al., in which seven potential functions are introduced, the general solution proposed in the present paper is more rigorously derived. Moreover, it has a simple form and is convenient for application. As an illustrative example, the problem of a pyroelectric half-space subjected to axisymmetric heating is studied. Numerical results of displacements, stresses, electric potential and electric displacements are obtained for a cadmium selenide half-space. Thermally induced displacements and stress distribution are compared with those obtained for the same material without piezoelectric and pyroelectric effects.

Abstract:In this paper, we first supplement two groups of simplified general solution based on previous work. Those results are in terms of harmonic functions and fit for the cases of multiple eigenvalues. Then by trial and error, we obtain the fundamental solutions for three cases for a piezoelectric infinite media by giving the expressions of harmonic functions. Finally, by use of those solutions, we implement a boundary element method program to perform numerical calculations. The numerical results agree well with the analytical ones. Abstract:By means of the three-dimensional general solution in displacement functions (weighted harmonic functions) for piezoelectric materials, the general solution of stress components and electric displacements expressed by the displacement functions is derived by use of the constitutive relation and the equilibrium equations. Based on this general solution, a series of problems is solved by the trial-and-error method, including circular plate (or cylinder), annular plate (or hollow cylinder), cone and hollow cone. These problems are circular plates and cylinders under uniform radial or axial tension and electric displacements as well as pure bending, simply-supported circular plates subjected to uniformly distributed loads, rotating disks and circular shafts, cones or hollow cones subjected to concentrated forces plus charge and concentrated force couple at their apex, etc. Analytical solutions to various problems are obtained. When the cone apex angle 2α equals π, the solutions for the cases of concentrated forces plus point charges and torsion reduce to the simple and practical solutions of the half-space problem.

Abstract:For the orthotropic piezoelectric plane problem, a series of piezoelectric beams is solved and the corresponding exact solutions are obtained with the trial-and-error method on the basis of the general solution in the case of three distinct eigenvalues, in which all displacements, electrical potential, stresses and electrical displacements are expressed by three displacement functions in terms of harmonic polynomials. These problems are rectangular beams having rigid body displacements and identical electrical potential, rectangular beams under uniform tension and electric displacement as well as pure shearing and pure bending, beams of two free ends subjected to uniform electrical potential on the upper and lower surfaces.

Abstract:An exact and complete solution of the problem of a half-plane crack in an infinite transversely isotropic piezoelectric body is presented. The upper and lower crack faces are assumed to be loaded antisymmetrically by a couple of tangential point forces in opposite directions. The solution is derived through a limiting procedure from that of a penny-shaped crack. The expressions for the electroelastic field are given in terms of elementary functions. Finally, the numerical results of the second and third mode stress intensity factors k(2) and k(3) of piezoelectric materials and elastic materials are compared in figures.

Abstract:In this paper, as is studied are the electro-elastic solutions for a piezoelectric halfspace subjected to a line force, a line charge and a line dislocation, i. e., Green's functions on the basis of Stroh formalism and the concept of analytical continuation, explicit expressions for Green's functions are derived. As a direct application of the results obtained, an infinite piezoelectric solid containing a semi-infinite crack is examined. Attention if focused on the stress and electric displacement fields of a crack tip. The stress and electric displacement intensity factors are given explicitly.

Abstract:Firstly, the extended Boussinesq and Cerruti solutions for point forces and point charge acting on the surface of a transversely isotropic piezoelectric half-space are derived. Secondly, aiming at a series of common three-dimensional contact including spherical contact, a conical indentor and an upright circular flat punch on a transversely isotropic piezoelectric half-space, we solve for their elastic and electric fields in smooth and frictional cases by first evaluating the displacement functions and then differentiating. The displacement functions can be obtained by integrating the extended Boussinesq or Cerruti solutions in the contact region. Then, when only normal pressure is loaded, the stresses in the half-space of PZT-4 piezoelectric ceramic are compared in the figures with those of the transversely isotropic material which are assumed to have the same elastic constants as those of PZT-4. Meanwhile, the electric components in the half-space of PZT-4 piezoelectric ceramic are also shown in the same figures.

Abstract:A general solution for the equilibrium equations of piezoelectric media under body forces is obtained. With regard to the transversely isotropic piezoelectric material, closed forms for the displacements and electric potential function for an infinite solid loaded with point forces and point charge are then obtained by using the general solution together with potential theory and constructing a kind of harmonic functions. Abstract:Emphasis is placed on purely elastic circular plates. Let the piezoelectric coefficients be equal to zero. Then two sets of uncoupled mechanical and electric equations are obtained and they can be solved independently. Two three-dimensional exact solutions of laminated transversely isotropic circular plate are derived under two boundary conditions, i.e. rigid slipping support and elastic simple support. For isotropic circular plates, the problem of multiple root is treated. At last, some numerical results of piezoelectric and purely elastic circular plates are presented and the applicability of classical plate theory is discussed.

Abstract:By employing the general solution for coupled three-dimensional equations of a transversely isotropic piezoelectric body, this paper investigates the free vibration of a circular plate made of piezoelectric material. Three-dimensional exact solutions are then obtained under two specified boundary conditions, which can be used for both axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric cases. Abstract:Based on the general solution of the three-dimensional problem for piezoelectric materials, the problem of a piezoelectric cone subjected to concentrated loads at its apex is solved by trial-and-error method. The displacements and stresses are explicitly given for the cases of compression in the presence of point charge, bending and torsion. These solutions are simple in form and convenient for application. When the apex angle 2α equals π, the solutions for concentrated force, point charge and torsion reduce to solutions of the half-space problem.
