Abstract:Polylactic acid is one of most important and promising biodegradable and bioabsorbable materials.It has been widely applied as biodegradable plastics and fibers as well as biomaterials,and therefore,is of tremendous market value.Polylactic acid has polyolefins-comparative mechanical and processing properties but unsatisfactory heat and impact resistance.Its thermal,mechanical and gas barrier properties need to be enhanced to satisfy various applications.Preparation of nanocomposites of polylactic acid with inorganic nanoparticles is an effective approach to remarkably improve the properties.The progress in the preparation,structure and properties of polylactic acid-based nanocomposites as well as the relationships among them are reviewed,and the prospect of this field is discussed.

Abstract:Polylactic acid (PLA) is one of the most extensively studied biodegradable materials. PLA is a versatile material with excellent bio-compatibility, bioabsorbability, biodegradability, and low toxicity. As an environmentally friendly polymer, PLA is favored by researchers and has explored many commercial applications, playing an important role in medicine and industry to replace many traditional petrochemical-based polymers. However, the strength and mechanical properties of PLA need to be improved to meet the practical application of multiple scenarios. The purpose of this review is to explore the modification methods of grafted copolymerization and block co-polymerization to improve the performance of PLA. This review also focuses on the medical applications and covers some non-medical applications of PLA.

Abstract:In recent years, biodegradable polymers have gained the attention of many researchers for their promising applications, especially in drug delivery, due to their good biocompatibility and designable degradation time. Poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) is a biodegradable functional polymer made from the polymerization of lactic acid (LA) and glycolic acid (GA) and is widely used in pharmaceuticals and medical engineering materials because of its biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and good plasticity. The aim of this review is to illustrate the progress of research on PLGA in biomedical applications, as well as its shortcomings, to provide some assistance for its future research development.

Abstract:Polylactic acid (PLA) has garnered significant attention due to its advantages of excellent biodegradability, biocompatibility, and renewable raw materials. This article begins by briefly introducing the research progress in the synthesis and modification of PLA, as well as its specific applications such as medical sutures and textiles, and the pros and cons of PLA itself. It then provides a detailed overview of the direct polymerization methods of PLA, including melt condensation and solution polymerization, and ring-opening polymerization methods such as cationic, anionic, and coordination. The process mechanisms, advantages, and disadvantages of each method are discussed, along with their suitability for practical industrial production and current limitations. Several specific modification methods of PLA are also discussed, such as low-temperature plasma modification and blending modification, highlighting the advantages, disadvantages, and specific research examples. These modifications aim to improve the deficiencies of PLA in areas such as mechanical strength or biological activity, allowing PLA to be applied in specific fields. Ultimately, the goal is for PLA to replace petroleum-based plastics and achieve widespread application in order to reduce environmental impact.

Abstract:Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a representative biobased and biodegradable polyester among sustainable materials. This review covers the basic structural variety of PLA, current states of stereocontrolled synthesis as well as the relationships between the structures and properties. Moreover, state‐of‐the‐art examples of high‐performance PLA‐based materials within an array of applications (packaging, fibers textiles, biomedicine, healthcare, and electronic devices) are highlighted. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a representative biobased and biodegradable aliphatic polyester and a front‐runner among sustainable materials. As a semicrystalline thermoplastic, PLA exhibits excellent mechanical and physical properties, attracting considerable attention in commodity and medical fields. Stereochemistry is a key factor affecting PLA's properties, and to this end, the engineering of PLA's microstructure for tailored material properties has been an active area of research over the decade. This Review first covers the basic structural variety of PLA. A perspective on the current states of stereocontrolled synthesis as well as the relationships between the structures and properties of PLA stereosequences are included, with an emphasis on record regularity and properties. At last, state‐of‐the‐art examples of high‐performance PLA‐based materials within an array of applications are given, including packaging, fibers, and textiles, healthcare and electronic devices. Among various stereo‐regular sequences of PLA, poly(L‐lactic acid) (PLLA) is the most prominent category and has myriad unique properties and applications. In this regard, cutting‐edge applications of PLLA are mainly overviewed in this review. At the same time, new materials developed based on other PLA stereosequences are highlighted, which holds the potential to a wide variety of PLA‐based sustainable materials.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Polylactic acid and its copolymers have been widely used in biomedical fields because of their good biocompatibility and biodegradability, which have become a hotspot in the research of biomaterials. OBJECTIVE:To review the biocompatibility of fully degradable polylactic acid and its copolymers. METHODS:A computer-based online retrieval of PubMed and CNKI was performed to search relevant papers published from 2006 to 2016, with the key words of "polylactide, polylactic acid, copolymer, biodegradability, biocompatibility, animal" in English and Chinese, respectively. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Polylactic acid and its copolymers as polyester compounds are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for use in the biomedical field because of their good biocompatibility mainly as drug delivery carriers and temporary implants. Moreover, their side effects in clinical application have attracted attentions. Polylactide copolymers can cause some adverse reactions when used in drug delivery systems, orthopedic and skin care, and other clinical medical fields. These copolymers are deemed to have no impact on the central nervous system, eyes, cardiovessels and other tissues and organs. They also have no virtually genotoxic and carcinogenic effects. Currently, the polylactide copolymer implant mainly results in local reactions in the surrounding tissues, and no systemic reactions have been found.

Abstract:PLA cycles, performance and applications. Polylactic acid (PLA) is a thermoplastic polyester that has received widespread attention for its environmentally friendly origin and excellent performance, and its potential to address the current problems of severe white pollution and scarcity of petroleum resources. This article focuses on the synthesis, modification, degradation and application of PLA. The main focus is on the modification of PLA with different environmentally friendly materials (natural organic materials, biodegradable polymers, inorganic minerals) in blends for defects such as the brittleness of PLA. In addition, the applications of PLA composites in the fields of construction, medical, packaging and oil and water separation are also introduced, which hopefully will provide some help to the promotion of PLA.

Abstract:Over the past few decades, with the development of science and technology, the field of biomedicine has rapidly developed, especially with respect to biomedical materials. Low toxicity and good biocompatibility have always been key targets in the development and application of biomedical materials. As a degradable and environmentally friendly polymer, polylactic acid, also known as polylactide, is favored by researchers and has been used as a commercial material in various studies. Lactic acid, as a synthetic raw material of polylactic acid, can only be obtained by sugar fermentation. Good biocompatibility and biodegradability have led it to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a biomedical material. Polylactic acid has good physical properties, and its modification can optimize its properties to a certain extent. Polylactic acid blocks and blends play significant roles in drug delivery, implants, and tissue engineering to great effect. This article describes the synthesis of polylactic acid (PLA) and its raw materials, physical properties, degradation, modification, and applications in the field of biomedicine. It aims to contribute to the important knowledge and development of PLA in biomedical applications.

Abstract:Polylactic Acid (PLA) is a biodegradable and bioactive polyester derived from renewable sources such as corn and sugar cane. Because PLA is eco-friendly, researchers have recently tried to make PLA replace other polymers that cause greenhouse gases and other pollution. However, for many industries, PLA has limitations of unsatisfactory toughness, heat resistance, etc. In this case, it is necessary to invest in the modification of PLA, which can offer PLA desired traits to adapt to different situations. This review focuses on the recent modifications that successfully improve PLA to fit the aims, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each method that is used for modification. There is no doubt that these methods provide a path to expand the use of PLA in different fields, such as packaging, medicine, agriculture, and textiles. The paper concludes by emphasizing the need for continued research and technological development to fully release PLA's potential in promoting a sustainable and eco-friendly future.

Abstract:With the gradual depletion of petroleum resources and the increasing global awareness of environmental protection, biodegradable plastics are receiving more and more attention as a green substitute for traditional petroleum-based plastics. Poly (lactic acid) is considered to be the most promising biodegradable material because of its excellent biodegradability, biocompatibility, and good processability. However, the brittleness and high cost limit its application in more fields. Lignin, as the second largest renewable biopolymer in nature after cellulose, is not only rich in reserves and low in cost, but it also has an excellent UV barrier, antioxidant activity, and rigidity. The molecular structure of lignin contains a large number of functional groups, which are easy to endow with new functions by chemical modification. Currently, lignin is mostly treated as waste in industry, and the value-added utilization is insufficient. The combination of lignin and poly (lactic acid) can on the one hand solve the problems of the high cost of PLA and less efficient utilization of lignin; on the other hand, the utilization of lignocellulosic biomass in compounding with biodegradable synthetic polymers is expected to afford high-performance wholly green polymer composites. This mini-review summarizes the latest research achievements of poly (lactic acid)/lignin composites. Emphasis was put on the influence of lignin on the mechanical properties of its composite with poly (lactic acid), as well as the compatibility of the two components. Future research on these green composites is also prospected.

Abstract:Today, the world is facing a great problem of plastic pollution due to its non-degradable nature. Alternatively, polylactic acid (PLA), a bio-based and biodegradable polymer, is emerging as a promising substitute for conventional, non-biodegradable plastics. However, its high cost, limited properties, and single functionality hinder its wide application. Lignin, a natural and sustainable biomass derived from plant cell walls, has become a promising filler for PLA. The integration of lignin into PLA composites holds the potential to realize the trifecta of low cost, high performance, and multifunctional properties while maintaining the principles of biodegradation and sustainability. However, the poor compatibility between PLA and lignin severely affects their overall performance, which creates a major challenge for the development of PLA/lignin composites. In recent years, a significant of advancements have been achieved in addressing this challenge. In this review, we provide a systematic insight into PLA/lignin composites, focusing on numerous compatibilization strategies including physical addition and chemical modification, and the progress on the structural characteristics, synthesis methods, performance improvements brought by lignin, and multiple applications. Finally, the existing problems and developmental direction of PLA/lignin composites are discussed. We believe that this review can be useful for future research prospects and industrial applications.

Abstract:With the depletion of petroleum energy, the possibility of prices of petroleum-based materials increasing, and increased environmental awareness, biodegradable materials as a kind of green alternative have attracted more and more research attention. In this context, poly (lactic acid) has shown a unique combination of properties such as nontoxicity, biodegradability, biocompatibility, and good workability. However, examples of its known drawbacks include poor tensile strength, low elongation at break, poor thermal properties, and low crystallization rate. Lignocellulosic materials such as lignin and cellulose have excellent biodegradability and mechanical properties. Compounding such biomass components with poly (lactic acid) is expected to prepare green composite materials with improved properties of poly (lactic acid). This paper is aimed at summarizing the research progress of modification of poly (lactic acid) with lignin and cellulose made in in recent years, with emphasis on effects of lignin and cellulose on mechanical properties, thermal stability and crystallinity on poly (lactic acid) composite materials. Development of poly (lactic acid) composite materials in this respect is forecasted.

Abstract:The massive use of petroleum-based plastics has caused tremendous damage to the world's environment, so it has become increasingly urgent to develop biodegradable materials represented like polylactic acid (PLA). PLA is a non-polluting, completely degradable and renewable polymer material with high strength, high modulus and good biocompatibility. However, the disadvantages of conventional PLA, such as poor heat resistance and limited flexibility, limit its application. Therefore, its modification is needed. This article summarizes the structure and properties of PLA and describes the synthesis methods based on direct polymerization, ring-opening polymerization and enzyme-catalyzed polymerization. The article also reviews the methods of PLA modification, including physical modification by adding fibrous materials, nucleating agents, and compound modification, and chemical methods such as copolymerization and cross-graft modification. Moreover, the article presents the applications of PLA in packaging and medical materials. At the end of this article, future research and development directions of PLA are discussed.

Abstract:Synthesis and application of polylactic acid(PLA),a kind of eco-friendly polymers possessing excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability,has recently attracted greatly attention.PLA is manufactured by two methods,i.e.polycondensation and ring-opening.Commercially the catalysts used for the synthesis of PLA are stannous compounds as stannous chloride dehydrate,and stannous octoate.Research revealed that the stannous compounds are cytotoxic that has aroused concern about the bio-safety of the materials based on PLA and its use in humans.Key advances in synthesis of PLA were reviewed.

Abstract:Over the past two decades, biomass-derived and biodegradable polylactide (PLA) has sparked tremendous attention as a sustainable alternative to traditional petroleum-derived polymers for diverse applications. Unfortunately, the current applications of PLA have been mainly limited to biomedical and commodity fields, mostly because the poor heat resistance (resulting from low melting temperature) and hydrolysis stability make it hard to use as an engineering plastic. Stereocomplexation between enantiomeric poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) and poly(d-lactide) (PDLA) opens a new avenue toward PLA-based engineering plastics with improved properties. The formation, crystal structure, properties, and potential applications of stereocomplex-type PLA (SC-PLA) are summarized by some research groups. However, since it is challenging to achieve full stereocomplexation from high-molecular-weight PLLA/PDLA blends and to avoid serious thermal degradation of the PLAs after complete melting, the advances and progress in the processing of SC-PLA into useful products are quite rare in open publication. In this review, some important strategies for enhancing stereocomplex crystallization in practical processing operations are presented and recently developed processing technologies for SC-PLA are highlighted, such as low-temperature sintering. Furthermore, major challenges and future developments are briefly discussed. This review is expected to potentially open up new research activities in the processing of SC-PLA.

Abstract:The demand for an adoption of renewable resources rather than finitely available non renewable sources for industrial purposes are rising, with the growing environmental constraints. Polymers being one of the crucial part of almost all the industries, pioneer in the list of sources needed for various applications. This makes polymers that can be obtained from renewable sources being studied widely and are anticipated to make a revolution in the field of packaging industry, medical field, and automobile industry. Polylactic acid (PLA) is one among such biopolymers, which is an aliphatic polyester derived from lactic acid (2-hydroxypropionic acid), that find wide applications in food packaging industry, tissue scaffolding, and biomedical devices. This paper focuses on an in-depth review on polylactic acid, its structure, and various properties of PLA. The details of different polymer blends/composites based on PLA are also discussed here. The fields of applications, where PLA is being utilized and the future scopes of the polymer are also studied.

Abstract:The production and utilization of polymers have been widely implemented into diverse applications that benefit modern human society, but one of the most valuable properties of polymers, durability, has posed a long-standing environmental challenge from its inception since plastic waste can lead to significant contamination and remains in landfills and oceans for at least hundreds of years. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) derived from renewable resources provides a sustainable alternative to traditional polymers due to its advantages of comparable mechanical properties with common plastics and biodegradability. However, the poor thermal and hydrolytic stability of PLA-based materials limit their potential for durable applications. Stereocomplex crystallization of enantiomeric poly (l-lactide) (PLLA) and poly (d-lactide) (PDLA) provides a robust approach to significantly enhance material properties such as stability and biocompatibility through strong intermolecular interactions between L-lactyl and D-lactyl units, which has been the key strategy to further PLA applications. This review focuses on discussing recent progress in the development of processing strategies for enhancing the formation of stereocomplexes within PLA materials, including thermal processing, additive manufacturing, and solution casting. The mechanism for enhancing SC formation and resulting material property improvement enabled by each method are also discussed. Finally, we also provide the perspectives on current challenges and opportunities for improving the understanding of processing-structure-property relationship in PLA materials that could be beneficial to their wide practical applications for a sustainable society.

Abstract:Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a biodegradable and bio-based polymer that has gained significant attention as an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional petroleum-based plastics. PLA is derived from renewable resources like corn starch or sugarcane through a fermentation process that converts sugars into lactic acid, which is then synthesized into lactic acid. As a bioabsorbable synthetic polyester, PLA has the following benefits, biodegradability, biodegradability, renewable source, non-toxic, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, energy savings. With the emergence of new manufacturing technologies, especially nanomaterial technology, PLA can be endowed with more structural and biological properties. Abstract:l-Lactide is an intermediate for the industrial production of polylactic acid (PLA). The chemical and optical purities of lactide determine the quality of the prepared PLA. It is of great challenge to synthesize l-lactide efficiently with high chemical and optical purities under the conditions applicable for industrial production. With the national plastic reduction order issued, developing biodegradable materials such as PLA has gradually become a hot topic, and the production of upstream lactide is the key technique for the whole industrial chain. Abstract:Polylactic acid (PLA) when combined with 3D-printing technology has been used in various fields owing to its excellent biodegradability. However, the application of PLA as a 3D-printing material is limited by several characteristics, such as its fragility with a poor impact resistance and poor dimensional stability. Recently, PLA has been processed to improve its properties and retain its biodegradable advantages, thus significantly enhancing the performance of PLA materials in several aspects, such as their mechanical properties, printability, print quality, and functionalization. This paper specifically focuses on PLA in 3D printing and reviews the latest processing methods of 3D-printed PLA developed in the last three years, including physical, chemical, and chemical/physical composite processing methods. It also introduces the processing methods and results of PLA in different extrusion stages, as well as its print quality and application in various printing processes. Finally, it reviews the functional processing of products in terms of applications. This review provides reliable data for further research on PLA, which can be used as a reference for the practical application and production of PLA and MEX.
