Abstract:Infrared microspectroscopy (IMS) has undergone rapid development in the last 20years. New infrared sources and detectors have promoted this development. More meaningful information can be achieved in less time, and spatial resolution is only several micrometers. The improved IMS is important in biology, medical science, and biochemistry. This review describes the progress of IMS in light sources and detectors, including thermal sources, synchrotron infrared sources, multiple synchrotron beams, single element detectors, as well as focal plane array (FPA) detectors. In addition, applications of IMS on agricultural and aquatic products such as cereal seeds, milk, fish, meat, forage grass, juice, and cheese are explored. Finally, new trends in the development of IMS and its importance in the fundamental and applied research of agricultural and aquatic products are discussed.

Abstract:In this review, we present recent advancements and novel developments in fluidic systems for applied analytical purposes in chemistry, biochemistry, and life science in general that employ and reflect the full benefits of microfluidics. A staggering rise in publications related to integrated, all-in-one microfluidic chips capable of separation, reaction, and detection have been observed, all of which realise the principal of micro total analysis systems or lab-on-a-chip. These integrated chips actively adopt the scaling law concepts, utilising the highly developed fabrication techniques. Their aim is to multi-functionalise and fully automate devices believed to assist the future advancements of point-of-care, clinical, and medical diagnostics.

Abstract:Instrument miniaturization is one of the critical issues to improve sensitivity, speed, throughput, and to reduce the cost of analysis. Microfluidics possesses the ability to handle small sample amounts, with minimal concerns related to sample loss and cross-contamination, problems typical for standard fluidic manipulations. Moreover, the native properties of microfluidics provide the potential for high-density, parallel sample processing, and high-throughput analysis. Recently, the coupling of microfluidic devices to mass spectrometry, especially electrospray ionization (ESI) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI), has attracted an increasing interest and produced tremendous achievements. The interfaces between microfluidics and mass spectrometry are one of the primary focused problems. In this review, we summarize the latest achievements since 2008 in the field of the technologies and applications in the combining of microfluidics with ESI-MS and MALDI-MS. The integration of several analytical functions on a microfluidic device such as sample pretreatment and separations before sample introduction into the mass spectrometer is also discussed.

Abstract:A review is provided of the application of chemiluminescent detection for microfluidic chip in recent years.It is pointed out that microfluidic chip(also known as "lab on a chip" or "micro total analysis system") has increasingly attracted attention in the past two decades,due to its advantages including miniaturization,integration,and automation.Besides,it is also suggested that chemiluminescence detection has the advantages of simple facility,low background noise,and low costs for operation and maintenance.This makes it feasible to adopt chemiluminescence detection as a suitable detection technique for microfluidic chip.

Abstract:Microfluidics-based immunoassays have become an increasing research field in recent years owing to their advantages of miniaturization, high throughput, fast detection and low consumption. Detection is an important part in microfluidics-based immunoassays. Recent advances in the studies of micro-systems and detection methods, including electrochemical detection., fluorescence spectrometry, ultraviolet-visible spectrometry, chemiluminescence and bioluminescence, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, fiber-optic sensor, surface plasmon resonance, thermal lens microscopy, colorimetry and other new detection methods applied in microfluidics-based immunoassays, were summarized and reviewed in this paper. The prospects of the detection methods for microfluidics-based immunoassays were presented.

Abstract:The field of microfluidics has exploded in the past decade, particularly in the area of chemical and biochemical analysis systems. Borrowing technology from the solid-state electronics industry and the production of microprocessor chips, researchers working with glass, silicon, and polymer substrates have fabricated macroscale laboratory components in miniaturized formats. These devices pump nanoliter volumes of liquid through micrometer-scale channels and perform complex chemical reactions and separations. The detection of reaction products is typically done fluorescently with off-chip optical components, and the analysis time from start to finish can be significantly shorter than that of conventional techniques. In this review we describe these microfluidic analysis systems, from the original continuous flow systems relying on electroosmotic pumping for liquid motion to the large diversity of microarray chips currently in use to the newer droplet-based devices and segmented flow systems. Although not currently widespread, microfluidic systems have the potential to become ubiquitous.

Abstract:Microfluidic and capillary devices are increasingly being used in analytical applications while their overall size keeps decreasing. Detection sensitivity for these microdevices gains more importance as device sizes and consequently, sample volumes, decrease. This paper reviews optical, electrochemical, electrical, and mass spectrometric detection methods that are applicable to capillary scale and microfluidic devices, with brief introduction to the principles in each case. Much of this is considered in the context of separations. We do consider theoretical aspects of separations by open tubular liquid chromatography, arguably the most potentially fertile area of separations that has been left fallow largely because of lack of scale-appropriate detection methods. We also examine the theoretical basis of zone electrophoretic separations. Optical detection methods discussed include UV/Vis absorbance, fluorescence, chemiluminescence and refractometry. Amperometry is essentially the only electrochemical detection method used in microsystems. Suppressed conductance and especially contactless conductivity (admittance) detection are in wide use for the detection of ionic analytes. Microfluidic devices, integrated to various mass spectrometers, including ESI-MS, APCI-MS, and MALDI-MS are discussed. We consider the advantages and disadvantages of each detection method and compare the best reported limits of detection in as uniform a format as the available information allows. While this review pays more attention to recent developments, our primary focus has been on the novelty and ingenuity of the approach, regardless of when it was first proposed, as long as it can be potentially relevant to miniature platforms.

Abstract:This review introduces a micro-integrated device of microfluidics and fiber-optic sensors for on-site detection, which can detect certain or several specific components or their amounts in different samples within a relatively short time. Fiber-optics with micron core diameters can be easily coated and functionalized, thus allowing sensors to be integrated with microfluidics to separate, enrich, and measure samples in a micro-device. Compared to traditional laboratory equipment, this integrated device exhibits natural advantages in size, speed, cost, portability, and operability, making it more suitable for on-site detection. In this review, the various optical detection methods used in this integrated device are introduced, including Raman, ultraviolet–visible, fluorescence, and surface plasmon resonance detections. It also provides a detailed overview of the on-site detection applications of this integrated device for biological analysis, food safety, and environmental monitoring. Lastly, this review addresses the prospects for the future development of microfluidics integrated with fiber-optic sensors.

Abstract:Microfluidics is the basis of micro total analysis system (μTAS) and the research spotlight in Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) now. With the development of microfluidics and the cooperation with other technologies, many new areas, especially microfluidic optical devices, come into being. It is possible that the miniaturization, arraying, low-cost and precise control of the optical devices are realized by the cooperation between microfluidic technology and optical devices. Some typical optical devices and applications are presented, including variable-focusing microlens, display device, optical switch, tunable optical fiber and grating.

Abstract:Combined fluorescence with absorbance technique, contrast fluorescence detection optical system used for microfluidic chips is proposed. By designing the optical parameters of the light splitting system and telecentric optical system, the system can be used for LIF and absorbance detection by tuning the working distance. To evaluate the performance of system, the MTF and spot are shown. Meanwhile, to further investigate the distribution of illumination, distribution of illumination on image plane and defocus plane are also calculated. These results may be helpful for designing a microfluidic detection system with improved sensitivity, enhanced detection efficiency, and lowered detection costs and is promising for offering a new method for spectrum scanning.

Abstract:In the past two decades, Micro Fluidic Systems (MFS) have emerged as a powerful tool for biosensing, particularly in enriching and purifying molecules and cells in biological samples. Compared with conventional sensing techniques, distinctive advantages of using MFS for biomedicine include ultra-high sensitivity, higher throughput, in-situ monitoring and lower cost. This review aims to summarize the recent advancements in two major types of micro fluidic systems, continuous and discrete MFS, as well as their biomedical applications. The state-of-the-art of active and passive mechanisms of fluid manipulation for mixing, separation, purification and concentration will also be elaborated. Future trends of using MFS in detection at molecular or cellular level, especially in stem cell therapy, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, are also prospected.

Abstract:We have proposed an enhanced Raman detection device based on microfluidic chip with arrays of microsphere. In this method, the working distance of detection can be increased greatly and the system of detection can be more stable. The enhancement effect is nearly stationary and the Raman scattering signal will increase by 6 times at different distances from 10 mm to 50 mm and different angles from 0° to 30°. When there is a transparent partition on the microfluidic chip, the signal can still get near 6 times enhancement. In addition, we have verified the detection accuracy and reusability of our design in mixture analysis.

Abstract:Microfluidic systems provide a powerful platform for preparing, functionalizing, and manipulating nano-/micro-materials. In this review, we summarize the characteristics of state-of-the-art microfluidic techniques and their application to processing novel nano-/micro-materials with tunable size, shape, morphology, composition, and properties. A variety of synthesis strategies based on novel microfluidic devices are presented and compared, including their integration with real-time monitoring, external fields, and automatic feedback control. Novel functional nano-/micro-materials with complex structures have been controllably prepared and post-processed to obtain high-quality products. Strategies for controlling and tuning physical and chemical properties are also examined in terms of the design and function of microfluidic platforms. We provide an outlook on future developments in the processing of nano-/micro-materials by microfluidic technologies. Abstract:Spectral analysis is an important tool that is widely used in scientific research and industry. Although the performance of benchtop spectrometers is very high, miniaturization and portability are more important indicators in some applications, such as on-site detection and real-time monitoring. Since the 1990s, micro spectrometers have emerged and developed. Meanwhile, with the development of nanotechnology, nanomaterials have been applied in the design of various micro spectrometers in recent years, further reducing the size of the spectrometers. In this paper, we review the research progress of micro spectrometers based on nanomaterials. We also discuss the main limitations and perspectives on micro spectrometers.

Abstract:The article briefly described the development history of chemical vapor generation-nondispersive atomic fluorescence spectrometry.Advances were reviewed for recent 10 years involving novel atomizers (DBD atomizer,FLGS miniature hydride atomizer,electrothermal-flame tandem atomizer,multilayer porous array flame converging atomizer),novel reaction systems (electrochemical vapor generation,photochemical vapor generation,plasma-induced vapor generation,etc.),and novel sampling methods (multisyringe flow injection analysis,solid sampling).The future development direction of chemical vapor generation-nondispersive atomic fluorescence spectrometric technology was also prospected.

Abstract:In this review, we highlight the latest development of multi-channel microfluidic chip-mass spectrometry (chip-MS) in cell analysis and metabolite detection. Following a brief introduction about history and development of multi-channel microchip and MS combination, we will elaborate the key issues of constructing chip-MS platform interface. Then exciting progresses made in this field should be reviewed with well exemplified works, including chip-MS technology for cell introduction, pretreatment of cell secretions and cell metabolite analysis. We will also describe the development of integrated total analysis systems proposed by our group. We hope this brief review will inspire interested readers and provide knowledge about chip-MS platform in the bioanalysis field, particularly in cell analysis and metabolite identifying applications.

Abstract:Microfluidics can precisely control and manipulate micro-scale fluids, and are also known as lab-on-a-chip or micro total analysis systems. Microfluidics have huge application potential in biology, chemistry, and medicine, among other fields. Coupled with a suitable detection system, the detection and analysis of small-volume and low-concentration samples can be completed. This paper reviews an optical imaging system combined with microfluidics, including bright-field microscopy, chemiluminescence imaging, spectrum-based microscopy imaging, and fluorescence-based microscopy imaging. At the end of the article, we summarize the advantages and disadvantages of each imaging technology.
