Firstly, we investigate the weakest constraint qualifications for the Bouligand and Mordukhovich stationarities for MPEC. Then, we show that the MPEC relaxed constant positive linear dependence condition can ensure any locally optimal solution to be Mordukhovich stationary. Finally, we give the relations among the existing MPEC constraint qualifications.

Abstract:For a general infinite system of convex inequalities in a Banach space, we study the basic constraint qualification and its relationship with other fundamental concepts, including various versions of conditions of Slater type, the Mangasarian--Fromovitz constraint qualification, as well as the Pshenichnyi--Levin--Valadier property introduced by Li, Nahak, and Singer. Applications are given in the restricted range approximation problem, constrained optimization problems, as well as in the approximation problem with constraints by conditionally positive semidefinite functions.

Abstract:For an inequality system defined by an infinite family of proper convex functions, we introduce some new notions of constraint qualifications in terms of the epigraphs of the conjugates of these functions and study relationships between these new constraint qualifications and other well-known constraint qualifications including the basic constraint qualification studied by Hiriart-Urrutty and Lemarechal and by Li, Nahak, and Singer. Extensions of known results to more general settings are presented, and applications to particular important problems, such as conic programming and approximation theory, are also studied.

Abstract:In this paper, we focus on some new constraint qualifications introduced for nonlinear extremum problems in the recent literature. We show that, if the constraint functions are continuously differentiable, the relaxed Mangasarian–Fromovitz constraint qualification (or, equivalently, the constant rank of the subspace component condition) implies the existence of local error bounds for the system of inequalities and equalities. We further extend the new result to the mathematical programs with equilibrium constraints. In particular, we show that the MPEC relaxed (or enhanced relaxed) constant positive linear dependence condition implies the existence of local error bounds for the mixed complementarity system.

Abstract:For an inequality system defined by an infinite family of proper convex functions (not necessarily lower semicontinuous), we introduce some new notions of constraint qualifications. Under the new constraint qualifications, we provide necessary and/or sufficient conditions for the KKT rules to hold. Similarly, we provide characterizations for constrained minimization problems to have total Lagrangian dualities. Several known results in the conic programming problem are extended and improved.

Abstract:This paper aims at developing effective numerical methods for solving mathematical programs with equilibrium constraints. Due to the existence of complementarity constraints, the usual constraint qualifications do not hold at any feasible point, and there are various stationarity concepts such as Clarke, Mordukhovich, and strong stationarities that are specially defined for mathematical programs with equilibrium constraints. However, since these stationarity systems contain some unknown index sets, there has been no numerical method for solving them directly. In this paper, we remove the unknown index sets from these stationarity systems successfully, and reformulate them as smooth equations with box constraints. We further present a modified Levenberg–Marquardt method for solving these constrained equations. We show that, under some weak local error bound conditions, the method is locally and superlinearly convergent. Furthermore, we give some sufficient conditions for local error bounds, and show that these conditions are not very stringent by a number of examples.

Abstract:For an inequality system defined by an infinite family of proper lower semicontinuous convex functions in normed linear space, we consider the Farkas-Minkowski (FM for short) type qualification and the basic constraint qualification (BCQ for short). By employing a new approach based on some new results established here on the SECQ (sum of epigraphs constraint qualification) for families of closed convex sets, some sufficient conditions involving further relaxing Slater type conditions for ensuring the FM qualification are provided. As applications, new sufficient conditions for ensuring the BCQ are given. These results significantly improve the corresponding ones in [C. Li and K. F. Ng, SIAM T. Optim., 15 (2005), pp. 488-512] and [C. Li, X. P. Zhao, and Y. H. Hu, SIAM J. Optim., 23 (2013), pp. 2208-2230], and they are obtained without the key continuity assumption on the sup-function of the inequality system which the previous works depend heavily on. Some examples are also presented to illustrate the applicability of our results.

Abstract:In this paper, we study constraint qualifications for the nonconvex inequality defined by a proper lower semicontinuous function. These constraint qualifications involve the generalized construction of normal cones and subdifferentials. Several conditions for these constraint qualifications are also provided therein. When restricted to the convex inequality, these constraint qualifications reduce to basic constraint qualification (BCQ) and strong BCQ studied in [SIAM J. Optim., 14(2004), 757-772] and [Math. Oper. Res., 30 (2005), 956-965].

Abstract:Constraint qualification (CQ) is an important concept in nonlinear programming. This paper investigates the motivation of introducing constraint qualifications in developing KKT conditions for solving nonlinear programs and provides a geometric meaning of constraint qualifications. A unified frame-work of designing constraint qualifications by imposing conditions to equate the so-called "locally constrained directions" to certain subsets of "tangent directions" is proposed. Based on the inclusion relations of the cones of tangent directions, attainable directions, feasible directions and interior constrained directions, constraint qualifications are categorized into four levels by their relative strengths. This paper reviews most, if not all, of the commonly seen constraint qualifications in the literature, identifies the categories they belong to, and summarizes the inter-relationship among them. The proposed framework also helps design new constraint qualifications of readers' specific interests.

Abstract:We study second-order optimality conditions for mathematical programs with equilibrium constraints (MPEC). Firstly, we improve some second-order optimality conditions for standard nonlinear programming problems using some newly discovered constraint qualifications in the literature, and apply them to MPEC. Then, we introduce some MPEC variants of these new constraint qualifications, which are all weaker than the MPEC linear independence constraint qualification, and derive several second-order optimality conditions for MPEC under the new MPEC constraint qualifications. Finally, we discuss the isolatedness of local minimizers for MPEC under very weak conditions.

Abstract:This paper considers a class of mathematical programs that include multiobjective generalized Nash equilibrium problems in the constraints. Little research can be found in the literature although it has some interesting applications. We present a single level reformulation for this kind of problems and show their equivalence in terms of global and local minimizers. We find that the reformulation is a special case of the so-called mathematical program with equilibrium constraints which is extensively studied in the literature.

Abstract:This paper considers mathematical programs, whose constraints are expressed by a parameterized vector equilibrium problem. The latter is a well recognized framework, which is able to cover multicriteria optimization, vector variational inequalities and complementarity problems. As the solutions to vector equilibrium problems are here intended in a strong sense, the consequent MPEC problems result in a class still little explored by the existing literature. Some necessary optimality conditions for such programs are established following a penalization approach. To derive and express these conditions, concepts and tools of nonsmooth analysis are employed. In treating equilibrium constraints, by techniques of variational analysis some error bounds are obtained, which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate second-order necessary conditions and exact penalty of mathematical programs with switching constraints (MPSC). Some new second-order constraint qualifications and second-order quasi-normality are introduced for (MPSC), which are crucial to establish the second-order necessary conditions and the error bound of (MPSC). We explore the relations among these constraint qualifications in term of (MPSC). The characterizations of Mordukhovich stationary point and strong stationary point of (MPSC) are derived under some mild conditions. A sufficient condition is provided for a Mordukhovich stationary point of (MPSC) being a strong stationary point. The strong second-order necessary conditions as well as weak second-order necessary conditions of (MPSC) are established under these weak constraint qualifications. Finally, we obtain the local exact penalty of (MPSC) under the local error bound or some constraint qualifications in term of (MPSC).

Abstract:Several fundamental concepts such as the basic constraint qualification (BCQ), the strong conical hull intersection property (CHIP), and the perturbations for convex systems of inequalities in Banach spaces (over R or C) are extended and studied; here the systems are not necessarily finite. Their relationships with each other in connection with the best approximations are investigated. As applications, we establish results on the unconstrained reformulation of best approximations with infinitely many constraints in Hilbert spaces; also we give several characterizations of best restricted range approximations in C(Q) under quite general constraints.

Abstract:Relaxed constant positive linear dependence constraint qualification (RCPLD) for a system of smooth equalities and inequalities is a constraint qualification that is weaker than the usual constraint qualifications such as Mangasarian Fromovitz constraint qualification and the linear constraint qualification. Moreover RCPLD is known to induce an error bound property. In this paper we extend RCPLD to a very general feasibility system which may include Lipschitz continuous inequality constraints, complementarity constraints and abstract constraints. We show that this RCPLD for the general system is a constraint qualification for the optimality condition in terms of limiting subdifferential and limiting normal cone and it is a sufficient condition for the error bound property under the strict complementarity condition for the complementarity system and Clarke regularity conditions for the inequality constraints and the abstract constraint set. Moreover we introduce and study some sufficient conditions for RCPLD including the relaxed constant rank constraint qualification (RCRCQ). Finally we apply our results to the bilevel program.

Abstract:In this paper we study the mathematical program with geometric constraints such that the image of a mapping from a Banach space is included in a nonempty and closed subset of a finite dimensional space. We obtain the nonsmooth enhanced Fritz John necessary optimality conditions in terms of the approximate subdifferential. In the case where the Banach space is a weakly compactly generated Asplund space, the optimality condition obtained can be expressed in terms of the limiting subdifferential, while in the general case it can be expressed in terms of the Clarke subdifferential. One of the technical difficulties in obtaining such a result in an infinite dimensional space is that no compactness result can be used to show the existence of local minimizers of a perturbed problem. In this paper we employ the celebrated Ekeland's variational principle to obtain the results instead. The enhanced Fritz John condition allows us to obtain the enhanced Karush-Kuhn-Tucker condition under the pseudo-normality and the quasi-normality conditions which are weaker than the classical normality conditions. We then prove that the quasi-normality is a sufficient condition for the existence of local error bounds of the constraint system. Finally we obtain a tighter upper estimate for the subdifferentials of the value function of the perturbed problem in terms of the enhanced multipliers.
Mordukhovich Stationarity for Mathematical Programs with Switching Constraints under Weak Constraint Qualifications

Abstract:The mathematical program with switching constraints (MPSC), which has been introduced recently, is a difficult class of optimization problems since standard constraint qualifications are very likely to fail at local minimizers. Due to the failure of standard constraint qualifications, it is reasonable to propose some constraint qualifications for local minimizers to satisfy some stationarity conditions that are generally weaker than Karush-Kuhn-Tucker stationarity such as Mordukhovich (M-) stationarity. First, we propose the weakest constraint qualification for M-stationarity of MPSC to hold at local minimizers. Then we extend some weak verifiable constraint qualifications for nonlinear programming to allow the existence of switching constraints, which are all strictly weaker than MPSC linear independence constraint qualification and/or MPSC Mangasarian-Fromovitz constraint qualification used in the literature. We show that most of the newly introduced constraint qualifications are sufficient for local minimizers to be M-stationary. Finally, the relations among MPSC tailored constraint qualifications are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, the mathematical programs with vanishing constraints or MPVC are considered. We prove that an MPVC-tailored penalty function, introduced in [5], is still exact under a very weak and new constraint qualification. Most importantly, this constraint qualification is shown to be strictly stronger than MPVC-Abadie constraint qualification.
