Abstract:The chemical shielding tensor for a paramagnetic system has been derived from the macroscopically observed magnetization using the perturbation theory. An approach to calculate the paramagnetic chemical shifts in transition metal systems based on the spin-only magnetic susceptibility directly evaluated from the ab initio Hilbert space of the electronic Zeeman Hamiltonian has been discussed. Computationally, several advantages are associated with this approach: (a) it includes the state-specific paramagnetic Curie (firstorder) and Van Vleck (second-order) contributions of the paramagnetic ion to the paramagnetic chemical shifts; (b) thus it avoids the system-specific modeling and evaluating effectively in terms of the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spin Hamiltonian parameters of the magnetic moment of the paramagnetic ion formulated previously; (c) it can be utilized both in the point-dipole (PD) approximation (in the longrange) and with the quantum chemical (QC) method based the hyperfine tensors (in the short-range). Additionally, we have examined the predictive performance of various DFT functionals of different families and commonly used core-augmented basis sets for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) chemical shifts. A selection of transition metal ion complexes with and without first-order orbital contributions, namely the [M(AcPyOx)3(BPh)]+ complexes of M=Mn2+, Ni2+ and Co2+ ions and CoTp2 complex and their reported NMR chemical shifts are studied from QC methods for illustration.

Abstract:The previously reported finite perturbation MNDO/GIAO method was ued to calculate nuclear magnetic shielding constants. A set of atomic MNDO parameters for nitrogen and oxygen was chosen by comparing calculated and experimental chemical shifts for compounds containing N and O atoms. The agreement of the trends within these compounds was satisfactory.

Abstract:We evaluate the performance of the automated fragmentation quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics approach (AF-QM/MM) on the calculation of protein and nucleic acid NMR chemical shifts. The AF-QM/MM approach models solvent effects implicitly through a set of surface charges computed using the Poisson–Boltzmann equation, and it can also be combined with an explicit solvent model through the placement of water molecules in the first solvation shell around the solute; the latter substantially improves the accuracy of chemical shift prediction of protons involved in hydrogen bonding with solvent. We also compare the performance of AF-QM/MM on proteins and nucleic acids with two leading empirical chemical shift prediction programs SHIFTS and SHIFTX2. Although the empirical programs outperform AF-QM/MM in predicting chemical shifts, the differences are in some cases small, and the latter can be applied to chemical shifts on biomolecules which are outside the training set employed by the empirical programs, such as structures containing ligands, metal centers, and non-standard residues. The AF-QM/MM described here is implemented in version 5 of the SHIFTS software, and is fully automated, so that only a structure in PDB format is required as input.

Abstract:Application of the INDO calculation of NMR chemical shift has been extended. Firstly, it is applied to the calculations of 13 C, 13 N and 17 O shieldings for a series of representative nitrogen- and oxygen-containing compounds. Then several 13 C shieldings of the three iron complexes (C 5 H 5 )Fe(CO) 2 CN, (C 5 H 4 ) 2 Fe(COH) 2 and (C 5 H 4 )Fe(CH 2 OH) 2 have been evaluated. The theoretical results are in good agreement with the experimental. In addition, it is found that the calculated diamagnetic contributions, σ d (M), of 13 C, 15 N and 17 O atoms exhibit a good linear relationship with the net charge, ρ(M), on these atoms.

However, the spin sum rule may result in a larger error due to the effects of s,p−d hybridization. Abstract:Summary Theoretical calculation of95Mo-NMR chemical shifts for [MoO4-nSn]2- (n=0-4) compounds is reported here for the first time on the basis of Fenske-Hall method and Sum-Over-State (SOS) perturbation theory. A systematic decrease in shielding of95Mo nuclei with increase of number of sulfur in [MoO4-nSn]2-, which is observed experimentally, can be reasonably explained by our calculation. A good linear relationship between chemical shifts of calculation and experiment is obtained. The electronic structure and bonding in these compounds are also discussed.

Abstract:When calculating electric field gradient (EFG), relativistic and electron correlation effects are crucial for obtaining accurate results, and the commonly used density functional methods produce unsatisfactory results, especially for heavy elements and/or strongly correlated systems. In this work, a stand-alone program is presented, which enables calculation of EFG from the molecular orbitals supplied by an external high accuracy quantum chemical calculation and includes relativistic effects through the exact two-component (X2C) formalism and efficient local approximations to it. Application to BiN and BiP molecules shows that a high precision can be achieved in the calculation of nuclear quadrupole coupling constants of 209 Bi by combining advanced ab initio methods with the X2C approach. For seventeen iron compounds, the Mössbauer nuclear quadrupole splittings (NQS) of 57 Fe calculated by a double-hybrid functional method are in a very good agreement with the experimental values. It is shown that, for strongly correlated molecules, the double-hybrid functionals are much more accurate than the commonly used hybrid functionals. The computer program developed in this study furnishes a useful utility for obtaining EFG and related nuclear properties with high accuracy.

Abstract:A formulation for the calculation of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) shielding tensors, based on density functional theory (DFT), is presented. Scalar-relativistic and spin-orbit coupling effects are taken into account, and a Fermi-contact term is included in the NMR shielding tensor expression. Gauge-including atomic orbitals (GIAO) and a frozen-core approximation are used. This formulation has been implemented, and H1 and C13 NMR shifts of hydrogen and methyl halides have been calculated and show good agreement with experiment. C13 NMR shifts of 5d transition metal carbonyls have been calculated and show improved agreement with experiment over previous scalar-relativistic calculations. For the metal carbonyls it is shown explicitly that the combination of spin-orbit coupling and magnetic field mixes spin triplet states into the ground state, inducing a spin density that then interacts with the nuclei of the metal carbonyl via the Fermi-contact term. Results indicate that the Fermi-contact contribution to the C13 NMR of the metal carbonyl ions increases with increasing oxidation state of the ion. It is reasoned that as the oxidation state increases, π back bonding decreases and σ bonding increases, within the metal–carbon bond, thus facilitating a greater transfer of spin density from the metal to the carbon nucleus, and thus increasing the Fermi-contact contribution to the NMR shielding of the carbon.

Abstract:Fragmentation-based methods for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) chemical shift calculations have become more and more popular in first-principles calculations of large molecules. However, there are many options for a fragmentation-based method to select, such as theoretical methods, fragmentation schemes, the number of levels of theory, etc. It is important to study the optimal combination of the options to achieve a good balance between accuracy and efficiency. Here we investigate different combinations of options used by a fragmentation-based method, the eXtended ONIOM (XO) method, for C chemical shift calculations on a set of organic and biological molecules. We found that: (1) introducing Hartree-Fock exchange into density functional theory (DFT) could reduce the calculation error due to fragmentation in contrast to pure DFT functionals, while a hybrid functional, xOPBE, is generally recommended; (2) fragmentation schemes generated from the molecular tailoring approach (MTA) with small level parameter n, for example, n = 2 and the degree-based fragmentation method (DBFM) with n = 1, are sufficient to achieve satisfactory accuracy; (3) the two-level XO (XO2) NMR calculation is superior to the calculation with only one level of theory, as the second level (i.e., low level) of theory provides a way to well describe the long-range effect. These findings are beneficial to practical applications of fragmentation-based methods for NMR chemical shift calculations of large molecules.

Abstract:AbstractIn this paper, INDO perturbation theory has been extended to calculate the NMR chemical shifts of transition metal compounds. The nitrogen and oxygen INDO parameters have been refined by using a set of nitrogen and oxygen containing compounds to minimize the differences between calculated and experimental 13C, 15N, and 17O shielding constants. These refined parameters, together with optimally selected iron INDO parameters, were used to evaluate the 13C chemical shifts of three iron complexes (C5H5)Fe(CO)2CN, (C5H4CHO)2Fe2, and (C5H4CH2OH)2Fe. The calculated 13C, 15N and 17O shielding constants were fairly in agreement with experimental results. In addition, a good linear relationship between the calculated [diamagnetic shielding constants σd(M) of 13C, 15N and 17O nuclei and the net charge ρ (M) of these atoms was noticed.

Abstract:In the context of the development of NMR Fermi contact shift calculations for assisting structural characterization of battery materials, we propose an accurate, efficient, and robust approach based on the use of an all electron method. The full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method, as implemented in the WIEN2k code, is coupled with the use of hybrid functionals for the evaluation of hyperfine field quantities. The WIEN2k code is able to fully relax relativistic core states and uses an autoadaptive basis set that is highly accurate for the determination of the hyperfine field. Furthermore, the way hybrid functional approaches are implemented offers the possibility to use them at no additional computational cost. In this paper, NMR Fermi contact shifts for lithium are studied in different classes of paramagnetic materials that present an interest in the field of Li-ion batteries: olivine LiMPO4 (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni), anti-NASICON type Li3M2(PO4)3 (M = Fe, V), and antifluorite-type Li6CoO4. Making use of the possibility to apply partial hybrid functionals either only on the magnetic atom or also on the anionic species, we evidence the role played by oxygen atoms on polarisation mechanisms. Our method is quite general for an application on various types of materials.

Abstract:We present a systematic density functional investigation on the prediction of the C-13, N-15, O-17, and F-19 NMR properties of 23 molecules with 21 density functionals. Extensive comparisons are made for both C-13 magnetic shieldings and chemical shifts with respect to the gas phase experimental data and the best CCSD(T) results. We find that the OPBE and OPW91 exchange-correlation functionals perform significantly better than some popular functionals such as B3LYP and PBE1PBE, even surpassing, in many cases, the standard wavefunction-based method MP2. Further analysis has been performed to explore the individual role played by various exchange and correlation functionals. We find that the B88 and PBE exchange functionals have a too strong tendency of deshielding, leading to too deshielded magnetic shielding constants; whereas the OPTX exchange functional performs remarkably well. We claim that the main source of error arises from the exchange functional, but correlation functional also makes important contribution. We find that the correlation functionals may be grouped into two classes. class A, such as LYP and B98, leads to deshielded NMR values, deteriorating the overall performance; whereas class B, such as PW91 and PBE, generally increases the absolute shieldings, which complements the exchange functionals, leading to improved results in the calculation of NMR data. Abstract:An exact two-component (X2C) relativistic theory for nuclear magnetic resonance parameters is obtained by first a single block-diagonalization of the matrix representation of the Dirac operator in a magnetic-field-dependent basis and then a magnetic perturbation expansion of the resultant two-component Hamiltonian and transformation matrices. Such a matrix formulation is not only simple but also general in the sense that the various ways of incorporating the field dependence can be treated in a unified manner. The X2C dia- and paramagnetic terms agree individually with the corresponding four-component ones up to machine accuracy for any basis.

Abstract:From the inception of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance as a spectroscopic technique, the local origin of chemical shifts has been a topic of discussion. A useful concept employed to describe it has been that of the "Lorentz sphere", the approximately spherical volume surrounding a given nucleus in which the electronic currents contribute significantly to the chemical shift, whereas the outside can be considered as an uniformly magnetised "bulk". In this paper we use the output of the plane wave DFT code CASTEP to get a quantitative estimate of the Lorentz sphere in periodic systems. We outline a mathematical description of a radial buildup function for the magnetic shielding starting from the electronic currents and the simple assumption of periodicity. We provide an approximate upper bound for the Lorentz sphere's size in any crystal, then compute buildup functions for a number of sites in two molecular crystals, showing how various chemical features such as hydrogen bonds influence to convergence to the final shielding value.

Accurate Prediction of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Parameters Via the XYG3 Type of Doubly Hybrid Density Functionals

Abstract:Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is one of the most powerful and versatile tools in elucidating molecular structures. To eliminate ambiguities of experimental assignments, accurate calculations of NMR spectra are of great importance. Here, a method for theoretical evaluation of the NMR shielding constants by analytic derivatives using gauge including atomic orbitals (GIAO) has been implemented for the XYG3 type of doubly hybrid density functionals (xDH), namely, the GIAO-xDH method. Benchmark calculations on shielding constants and chemical shifts demonstrate the remarkable accuracy of the GIAO-xDH method, compared to the accurate CCSD(T) references. It is shown here that the XYGJ-OS functional is able to give a mean absolute deviation (MAD) of ∼3.0 ppm in the calculated shielding constants for 13C, 15N, 17O, 19F, while both XYGJ-OS and xDH-PBE0 functionals are able to provide a satisfactory estimation of chemical shifts with MADs of ∼0.03 and 1.0 ppm for 1H and 13C, respectively. The basis set influence upon the method has been examined and a computational scheme considering both accuracy and efficiency has been proposed and tested to predict the experimental 13C chemical shifts of five medium-sized natural product molecules, yielding a MAD of ∼1.0 ppm, which demonstrates the practical feasibility of the GIAO-xDH method.

Abstract:The previously proposed exact two-component (X2C) relativistic theory of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) parameters [Q. Sun, W. Liu, Y. Xiao, and L. Cheng, J. Chem. Phys. 131, 081101 (2009)] is reformulated to accommodate two schemes for kinetic balance, five schemes for magnetic balance, and three schemes for decoupling in a unified manner, at both matrix and operator levels. In addition, three definitions of spin magnetization are considered in the coupled-perturbed Kohn-Sham equation. Apart from its simplicity, the most salient feature of X2C-NMR lies in that its diamagnetic and paramagnetic terms agree individually with the corresponding four-component counterparts for any finite basis. For practical applications, five approximate schemes for the first order coupling matrix X(10) and four approximate schemes for the treatment of two-electron integrals are introduced, which render the computations of X2C-NMR very much the same as those of approximate two-component approaches.
