Abstract:A new family of alternate poly(ester-anhydrides) containing aliphatic and aromatic diacids were synthesized. The dicarboxylic acids were obtained by derivatization of p-hydroxy benzoic acid at the hydroxy terminus with cyclic anhydride (adipic anhydride and succinic anhydride) and subsequently polymerized via the corresponding mixed anhydrides by melt polycondensation. DSC traces revealed that the polymers had low Tg (<40°C) and no crystallinity. The static contact angle measurements indicated that the poly(ester-anhydrides) were more hydrophobic than poly(d,l-lactide) and poly(adipic anhydride). In vitro degradation of the polymers was also investigated in pH 7.4 PBS at 37°C. It was found that degradation rate of the poly(ester-anhydrides) increased with p-carboxy phenyl adipic monoester (CPA) content in the polymers and the degradation duration could be adjusted from ca. 20 days to ca. 2 months. Erosion curve of poly(p-carboxy phenyl adipic monoester anhydride) (PCPA) was characterized by a linear region of weight loss at nearly constant rate in the first 7 days (ca. 80% of weight loss) followed by a gradual decrease region. IR and SEM analysis showed that significant erosion of PCPA occurred in the outer layer and no apparent erosion could be seen in the inner layer of the degrading sample after 7-day degradation. The poly(ester-anhydrides) may be used as either anti-infective polymeric prodrugs or matrices for drug delivery.

Abstract:Several aliphatic long chain polyesters with intrinsic viscosity of 0.80-1.47 dL/g were synthesized from biobased 1,5-pentanediol and long chain alpha,omega-diacids with 10-16 carbon atoms. Their chemical structure was characterized, and thermal, mechanical and gas barrier properties were assessed. These long chain polyesters have a melting temperature higher than poly(epsilon-caprolactone) and manifest polyethylene-like rapid crystallization, good thermal stability and ductile tensile behavior. Their melting temperature, crystallizablity, tensile modulus and oxygen and water vapor barrier performance all increase with increasing the chain length of diacid. In comparison with the widely used biodegradable poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) copolyester, these potentially biodegradable polyesters show comparable tensile strength, ductility and oxygen barrier performance, but obviously superior crystallizability, tensile modulus and water vapor barrier performance. Abstract:Poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEF) is a very promising biobased polymer possessing very high mechanical strength, rigidity and gas barrier performance. But its poor ductility and toughness may limit its applications. In this study, PEF-based copolymers with high intrinsic viscosity were successfully synthesized via melt polycondensation of dimethyl 2,5-furandicarboxylate (DMFD) and ethylene glycol in the presence of a copolycarbonate diol (PPeHC diol) as produced from 1,5-pentylene diol (PeDO), 1,6-hexylene diol (HDO) and dimethyl carbonate, and characterized with H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, DSC, TGA, tensile, impact and gas barrier testing. The products were "randomnized" as a result of ester-carbonate exchange reaction occurring along melt polycondensation, and therefore became amorphous copolymers possessing composition-dependent physico-mechanical properties which can be tunable from rigid-to-ductile thermoplastics to thermoplastic elastomers. Particularily, the copolymers with phi(PPeHC) of 25 wt% and 30 wt% are thermoplastics possessing greatly improved ductility (elongation at break up to 194%) and CO2 barrier performance higher than poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET; BIFCO2 3.6-2.8), and retaining high tensile modulus (2.2-1.9 GPa) and yielding strength (69-58 MPa) comparable to the bottle-grade PET. In comparison, the copolymer with phi(PPeHC) of 40 wt% behaves as a high performance thermoplastic elastomer with excellent gas barrier performance as well as high tensile strength (23 MPa).
In vivo degradation and biocompatibility of a new class of alternate poly(ester-anhydrides) based on aliphatic and aromatic diacids

Abstract:The degradation, tissue compatibility, and toxicology of a novel class of alternate poly(ester-anhydrides) were assessed in rats. It was observed that the degradation rate of the polymers in vivo was slower than that in vitro. In addition, erosion and intact zone were observed for all the polymers. IR and SEM analysis of the outer erosion and inner intact zone revealed that the outer zone degraded more rapidly than the inner zone. Such results were similar to that in vitro. All the studied poly(ester-anhydrides) produced mild inflammatory reactions and tissue encapsulation by layers of fibroblastic cells in vivo. Observation of liver and kidney tissue by light microscopy suggested the hydrolytic products of the studied poly(ester-anhydrides) had no harmful effects on the normal tissue/organs. In addition, the polymer and the breakdown products were found to be non-mutagenic by examination of micronucleus in bone marrow.

Abstract:Aliphatic polyesters were synthesized from 1,4-butanediol and predominantly renewable dicarboxylic acids containing even numbered carbons from 4 to 20 (succinic acid to eicosanedioic acid). Melt polymerizations were conducted up to 220 °C with titanium tetrabutoxide as polymerization catalyst. Two polymerization methods were applied: (1) stoichiometrically equivalent amounts of diol and diacid with 14 hours under argon followed by 10 hours under reduced pressure, (2) a 10 mol % excess of diol, with 6 hours under the inert gas and 6 hours under reduced pressure. Molecular weight properties were determined by size exclusion chromatography in chloroform and polystyrene as calibration standards. For the polyesters with the C6 to C20 diacids, M w obtained by Method 1 lied between 15,800 to 31,200 g/mol, and for Method 2 between 27,000 and 180,400 g/mol (average of M w for PBS was 194,000 g/mol). 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR spectra of all polymers were obtained, peak assignments were made and the microstructure of the polymers was verified. In addition, peaks associated with end-groups were identified. Thermal properties of the polymers were determined by differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis and thermal gravimetric analysis. For the polyesters obtained with C6 to C20 diacids, the highest T g was 1.25 °C (from tan δ) and the highest T m was 88.8 °C, both with the C20 diacid. The polymers were also treated by vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photo-oxidation as a plasma surface modification. The wettability of the original polymers and after their VUV photo-oxidation was measured by contact angle goniometry with water.

Abstract:A series of novel biodegradable aromatic-aliphatic poly(ester amide)s containing approximately equal amounts of amide and ester groups were successfully prepared through the interfacial polycondensation of 1,6-hexanediamine and aromatic diacylchlorides containing ethylene oxide moieties. The structure of the poly(ester amide)s was verified by Fourier transform infrared and NMR spectra. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis measurements demonstrated that the obtained polymers were amorphous and stable up to 300 degrees C under nitrogen. The synthesized poly(ester amide)s showed good hydrophilicity and. took up water in amounts up to 50% of their weights when exposed to a humid atmosphere. Under physiological conditions, the poly(ester amide)s were hydrolysable in a rapid and steady way. (C) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:The introduction of acid-degradable acetal moieties into a hyperbranched polyether backbone has been achieved by the design of a novel epoxide-based degradable inimer. This new monomer, namely, 1-(glycidyloxy)ethyl ethylene glycol ether (GEGE), has been copolymerized in the anionic ring-opening polymerization (AROP) with ethylene oxide (EO) or glycidol (G), respectively, yielding branched polyethers, that is, P(EO-co-GEGE) and P(G-co-GEGE), that possess an adjustable amount of acid-cleavable acetal units. In addition, a novel class of multiarm star copolymers P(G-co-GEGE-g-EO) with acid-labile polyether core and PEG side chains was synthesized by using the P(G-co-GEGE) copolymers as multifunctional macroinitiators for AROP of EO. The new materials have been characterized in a detailed manner, revealing narrow to moderate molecular weight distributions. The degradation of these polymers under acidic conditions was characterized via SEC and 1H NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract:Nowadays, the promotion and application of aliphatic-aromatic copolyesters, such as poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), are growing into a general trend. Although the structures of diacids exerted substantial impacts on degradation behavior, the underlying mechanisms have rarely been studied. In this work, 2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid was combined with succinic acid (PBSF), adipic acid (PBAF) and diglycolic acid (PBDF) to prepare three kinds of copolyesters. They showed unique degradation behaviors in buffer, enzyme environment and artificial seawater. These characteristics are closely related to the structural compositions of diacids. PBAFs displayed impressive biodegradability when catalyzed by Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB), while the more hydrophilic PBDFs exhibited faster hydrolysis in both buffer and artificial seawater. PBSFs, with hydrophobic and short segments, obtained a relatively slower rate of hydrolysis and enzymatic degradation. The reactivity sites and hydrolytic pathway were revealed by the combination of DFT calculation and Fukui function analysis. MD simulations, QM/MM optimizations and theozyme calculations showed that PBAF-CALB was prone to form a pre-reaction state, leading to the reduced energy barrier in the acylation process. This work revealed the effects of different structural features of diacids on polymer degradation and paved a way to design target biodegradable polymers in different degradation conditions.

Abstract:This article provided a convenient method to synthesize aliphatic polyesteramides mainly composed of alternating diester diamide units by polycondensation and chain extension. Two kinds of polyesteramide prepolymers were prepared through melt polycondensation from N,N'-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)oxamide and adipic acid or sebacic acid. Chain extension of them was conducted with 2,2-(1,4-phenylene)-bis(2-oxazoline) and adipoyl biscaprolactamate as combined chain extenders. The chain extended polyesteramides (ExtPEAs) were characterized by IR, H-1 NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, wide-angle X-ray scattering, tensile test, and dynamic thermomechanical analysis. The results showed that the ExtPEA(0, m)s were mainly constituted with the diester oxamide alternating units. They had T-m above 140.8 degrees C and the initial decomposition temperature above 298.0 degrees C. Abstract:Surfaces with micro–nano roughness and reduced surface energy owing to long-chain fluorocarbon oligomers are critical for developing superamphiphobic surfaces. Here, a series of anhydride-based polypropylene (MPA) resins with different substituents (R) in their side chains were synthesized by the radical polymerization of (meth) acrylates, styrene, and maleic anhydride. Static-oil and water contact angle tests were conducted on the MPA film, which demonstrated that the longer the carbon chain in the side chain substituent, the stronger the hydrophobicity of the coating, and the higher the fluorine content in the side chain, the higher the oleophobicity. The MPA coating with long-chain alkane side chains (R = C 18 H 37 ) exhibited the greatest hydrophobicity (water contact and sliding angles of 130° and 65°, respectively). However, the MPA coating with long-chain alkanes showed poor oil repellency to non-polar solvents (oil phase). When (R) = C 8 F 17 , the coating exhibited high oleophobicity but poor friction resistance. Based on these results, a low surface energy MPA coating was designed by combining long-chain alkane groups with fluorocarbon groups. The optimized coating with a 0.8:0.4 molecular ratio of stearyl methylacrylate to 1H,1H,2H,2H -heptadecafluorodecyl acrylate exhibited both water and oil repellency (water and oil contact angles of 135° and 95°, respectively) and adequate mechanical properties.

Abstract:A new monomer diacid, 1,2-dihydro-2-(4-carboxylphenyl)-4-[4-(4-carboxylphenoxy)phenyl](2H)phthalazin-1-one (3), was synthesized through the aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction of a readily available unsymmetrical phthalazinone bisphenol-like (1) with p-chlorobenzonitrile in presence of potassium carbonate in N,N-dimethylacetamide and alkaline hydrolysis. The diacid can be direct polymerized with various aromatic diamines (4a-d) using triphenyl phosphite and pyridine as condensing agents to give a series of new aromatic poly(ether amide)s (5a-d) containing the kink non-coplanar heterocyclic units with inherent viscosities of 1.26-1.53 dl/g. The polymers were readily soluble in a variety of solvents such as N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc), dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP), even in m-cresol and pyridine (Py) and partly soluble in chloroform at room temperature and afforded transparent. flexible and tough films by solution casting. The glass transition temperatures (T-g) were in the range of 291-329degreesC, and the temperatures for 5% weight loss in nitrogen were in the range of 445-520degreesC.

Abstract:Two kinds of aliphatic alternating polyesteramide prepolymers were prepared through melt polycondensation from N,N′-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-adipamide and adipic acid or sebacic acid. Chain extension of them was conducted with 2,2′-(1,4-phenylene)-bis(2-oxazoline) and adipoyl biscaprolactamate as combined chain extenders. The chain extended polyesteramides (ExtPEAs) were characterized by IR, 1H-NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, wide angle X-ray scattering, tensile test and enzymatic degradation. The results showed that the ExtPEA(4,m)s were mainly constituted with the diester adipamide alternating units. ExtPEA(4,4) and ExtPEA(4,8) had T m of 83.8°C and 85.8°C and initial decomposition temperature above 310.0°C. They crystallized similarly as Nylon-66 did and were flexible thermoplastic materials with tensile strength up to 25.64 MPa and strain at break up to 737%.
Preparation of Chemically Recyclable Poly(ether-alt-ester) by the Ring Opening Polymerization of Cyclic Monomers Synthesized by Coupling Glycolide and Epoxides

Abstract:Polyester and polyether are two key oxygenated polymers, and completely alternative sequence of poly(ester-alt-ether) could efficiently combine the advantages (including flexibility, degradability, etc.) of both segments. Currently, despite their copolymers could be synthesized from one-pot mixture of cyclic esters and epoxides, perfectly alternative microstructure is very challenging to realize and typically restricted to certain monomer pairs. Moving forward, synthesizing poly(ester-alt-ether) from commercially available and largescale monomers would be a significant advance. For example, successfully commercialized poly(glycolic acid) (PGA), which is not easily soluble in polymers due to its high crystallinity and is brittle and difficult to control the degradation cycle, would encounter a new paradigm if engineered into poly(ester-alt-ether). In this work, starting from the design of monomer with hybrid structures, we successfully synthesized a series of 1,4-dioxan-2-one containing different substituents based on glycolide (GA) and epoxides using commercially available Salen-Cr(III) and PPNCl catalytic systems. The new monomers underwent ring-opening polymerization (ROP) to form a series of poly(ester-alt-ether) with perfectly alternating glycolic acid and propylene glycol repeat units under catalytic system of thiourea/base. The poly(ester-alt-ether) have significantly lower glass-transition temperature than PGA. Additionally, the poly(ester-alt-ether) can be chemically recovered to monomer using Sn(Oct)2 or 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undecane-7-ene (DBU) as a catalyst in solution, thus establishing a closed-loop life cycle. From monomers derived from GA and epoxides, this work furnishes a novel strategy for the synthesis of poly(ester-alt-ether) with chemical recyclability.

Abstract:The high melting point of poly(1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic anhydride) [poly(CHDA)] is a disadvantage, in that it is intractable in the melting process of a drug delivery system. This report relates to diols introduced into the polyanhydride main chain to decrease its melting point. Various poly(ester anhydride)s containing ethylene glycol, 1,3-propanediol, 1,4-butanediol, or 1,6-hexandiol [poly(CHDA-XDO)] were synthesized by the esterification reaction and melt polycondensation. FTIR, DSC, WAXD, and intrinsic viscosity of polymers were recorded and hydrolytic degradation, as well as in vitro drug delivery, was conducted. The results show that the samples are stable in an anhydrous environment at room temperature and degrade in water following a surface erosion mechanism. The degradation period of poly(CHDA-XDO) ranged from 130 to 320 h as a result of the different diols and amounts of XDO introduced. The in vitro drug delivery gave 130-350 h of stable delivery along with the typical surface erosion mechanism. (C) 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:A series of polyesteramide prepolymers[PrePEA(0/4,8)s] having mixed alternating bisesterdiamide units was synthesized via melt polycondensation from N,N′-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)oxamide(0) and N,N′-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-adipamide(4) with sebacic acid(8) at different molar ratios. Chain extension of them was conducted with 2,2′-(1,4-phenylene)-bis(2-oxazoline) and adipoyl biscaprolactamate as combined chain extenders. The chain extended polyesteramides[ExtPEA(0/4,8)s] were characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance(1H NMR), gel permeation chromatography(GPC), differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), thermogravimetry analysis(TGA), wide angle X-ray scattering, tensile test and enzymatic degradation. The results show that ExtPEA(0/4,8)s were crystalline polyesteramides. They had Tm up to 136.5 °C and initial decomposition temperature above 297.5 °C. They crystallized in similar crystallites into Nylon-66 and degraded under the catalysis of protease or lipase. They are thermoplastic materials with tensile strength up to 21.5 MPa and elongation at break above 64.0%.

Abstract:A new class of soluble, processable polydiacetylenes(PDA) derived from the alkoxycarbonylmethyl-and related urethanes of 9-(aryl-5, 7-nonadiyn-1-ol has been designed and synthesized. The aryl groups used include N-methyl-anilino, diphenylamino, and 9-carbazolyl. These PDA are susceptible to postpolymerization functionalization via the aryiamine and ester groups. Examples of the former include tricyanovinylation and diazonium salt coupling. The latter materials are the first rigid rod polymers to allow direct photofabrication of regular surface relief gratings, as revealed by atomic force microscopy(AFM).

Abstract:Abstract2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (2,5-FDCA) has been regarded as the ideal bio-based alternative to terephthalic acid (TPA). In recent years, great efforts have been made to synthesize 2,5-FDCA through the following methods: (1) oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in the presence of complex biocatalyst or metallic catalyst; (2) conversion of 2-furoic acid via the well-known Henkel Reaction. Herein, a new strategy for the synthesis of 2,5-FDCA from furan and acetic anhydride under mild condition is reported. The purity of the resulted 2,5-FDCA was above 99.9%. Acetic acid and iodoform generated in the reaction were recyclable and no other harmful by-products were detected. The thus-obtained 2,5-FDCA was applied for the preparation of poly(ethylene furandicarboxylate) (PEF) of high quality in terms of high molecular weight and good appearance.
