Abstract:We study the old problem of isometrically embedding a 2-dimensional Riemannian manifold into Euclidean 3-space. It is shown that if the Gaussian curvature vanishes to finite order and its zero set consists of two Lipschitz curves intersecting transversely at a point, then local sufficiently smooth isometric embeddings exist.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the existence of an isometric embedding near the origin in R3 of a two-dimensional metric with nonpositive Gaussian curvature. The Gaussian curvature can be allowed to be highly degenerate near the origin. Through the Gauss-Codazzi equations, the embedding problem is reduced to a 2 × 2 system of the first order derivaties and is solved via the method of Nash-Moser-Hörmander iterative scheme.

Abstract:The present paper is a continuation of [t~0] and []~Z] which are devoted to the existence of global isometric embeddings in R 3 of nonnegatively curved surfaces. In particular, [GL] and [HZ] independently prove that any C 4 nonnegative curvature metric defined over S 2 always has a C 1'1 isometric embedding in _R s. Abstract:In Finsler geometry, the Minkowski space is a generalization of the Euclidean space. We will brief isometric immersions of Finsler manifolds in Minkowski spaces, in particular, minimal immersions. The volume variation and the mean curvature of Finsler submanifolds in a Minkowski space are given. Some Bernstein type theorems and non-trivial examples for minimal surfaces in Minkowski spaces are shown.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the smooth isometric immersion of a complete, simply connected surface with a negative Gauss curvature into the three-dimensional Euclidean space. A fundamental and longstanding problem is to find a sufficient condition for a complete negatively curved surface to be isometrically embedded in R^3 [67]. It can be described as an initial and/or boundary value problem for a hyperbolic system of nonlinear partial differential equations derived from the Gauss-Codazzi equations. The mathematical theory associated with this system is largely incomplete. The global smooth isometric immersion has been proven in the literature when the Gauss curvature decays rapidly and monotonically. However, when the Gauss curvature oscillates or decays slowly, the problem becomes much more challenging and little is known. In our paper, we find a sufficient condition, consisting of a finite total Gauss curvature and appropriate oscillations of the Gauss curvature. Under this condition we prove the global existence of a smooth solution to the Gauss-Codazzi system, achieving a global smooth isometric immersion of the surface into R^3. Furthermore, we show that the finite total Gauss curvature is necessary for the existence of a solution in a special case of the Gauss-Codazzi system. New techniques are developed to overcome the difficulties posed by the slow decay and oscillations of the Gauss curvature. By observing that certain combinations of the Riemann invariants decay faster than others, we reformulate the Gauss-Codazzi equations as a symmetric hyperbolic system and uncover a crucial structure of partial dampings. These partial dampings, along with the finite total curvature and appropriate oscillations of the Gauss curvature, enable us to obtain a global smooth solution through delicate analysis, and consequently establish a global smooth isometric immersion of such surfaces.

Abstract:Let f: M-n hooked right arrow+ Sn+1 subset of Rn+2 be an n-dimensional complete oriented Riemannian manifold minimally immersed in an (n + 1)-dimensional unit sphere Sn+1. Denote by S-+(n+1) the upper closed hemisphere. If f(M-n) subset of or equal to + S-+(n+1), then under some curvature conditions the authors can get that the isometric immersion is a totally embedding. They also generalize a theorem of Li Hai Zhong on hypersurface of space form with costant scalar curvature.

Abstract:We prove that both local and non-local formulations of the Degasperis-Procesi equation possess a pseudospherical nature. As a result, solutions determined by Cauchy problems with non-trivial initial data and a minimal specific regularity define an orthonormal coframe for a pseudospherical metric within a designated strip. While the region is entirely described by the initial condition, the one-forms are determined by the corresponding solutions. Moreover, we establish that any non-trivial initial condition yields a second fundamental form, which is locally determined within the strip. The surface may collapse within a finite-height strip when the initial condition leads to wave breaking. We determine conditions for the coframe to be defined on the upper plane. We investigate possible integrability structures related to the triad of fundamental one-forms.

Abstract:This paper intends to give a brief survey of the developments on realizationof surfaces into R^3 in the last decade. As far as the local isometricembedding is concerned, some results related to the Schlaffli-Yau conjectureare reviewed. As for the realization of surfaces in the large, somedevelopments on Weyl problem for positive curvature and an existence result forrealization of complete negatively curved surfaces into R^3, closely relatedto Hilbert-Efimov theorem, are mentioned. Besides, a few results for two kindof boundary value problems for realization of positive disks into R^3 areintroduced.

Abstract:We prove that if an RCD space has a regular isometric immersion in a Euclidean space, then the immersion is a locally bi-Lipschitz embedding map. This result leads us to prove that if a compact non-collapsed RCD space has an isometric immersion in a Euclidean space via an eigenmap, then the eigenmap is a locally bi-Lipschitz embedding map to a sphere, which generalizes a fundamental theorem of Takahashi in submanifold theory to a non-smooth setting. Applications of these results include a topological sphere theorem and topological finiteness theorems, which are new even for closed Riemannian manifolds.

Abstract:It was shown by Ramanathan (Manuscripta Math 60:417–422, 1988) that any compact oriented minimal surface in the three-dimensional round sphere admits at most a finite set of pairwise noncongruent minimal isometric immersions. In this paper, we extend this result to isotropic surfaces in spheres of higher dimension. The case of isotropic surfaces other than compact in space forms is also addressed.

Abstract:We investigate hypersurfaces M isometrically immersed in an (n+1)-dimensional semi-Riemannian space of constant curvature, n > 3, such that the operator A^3, where A is the shape operator of M, is a linear combination of the operators A^2 and A and the identity operator Id. The main result states that on the set U of all points of M at which the square of the Ricci operator of M is not a linear combination of the Ricci operator and the identity operator, the Riemann-Christoffel curvature tensor R of M is a linear combination of some Kulkarni-Nomizu products formed by the metric tensor g, the Ricci tensor S and the tensor S^2 of M, i.e., the tensor R satisfies on U some Roter type equation. Moreover, the (0,4)-tensor R.S is on U a linear combination of some Tachibana tensors formed by the tensors g, S and S^2. In particular, if M is a hypersurface isometrically immersed in the (n+1)-dimensional Riemannian space of constant curvature, n > 3, with three distinct principal curvatures and the Ricci operator with three distinct eigenvalues then the Riemann-Christoffel curvature tensor R of M also satisfies a Roter type equation of this kind.

Abstract:We review classical approaches to the problem of isometrically embedding a Riemannian surface into Euclidean 3-space, including coordinate-based approaches exposited by Darboux and Eisenhart, as well as the moving-frames based approaches advocated by Cartan. In particular, the first approach involves reducing the problem to solving a single PDE; settling the question of when this PDE is integrable by the method of Darboux is the subject of this short note. This is surprisingly easy, since it is related to the analogous question for the isometric embedding system arising from the moving frames approach, and this was accomplished in recent joint work with Clelland, Tehseen and Vassiliou (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1801.00241" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1801.00241">arXiv:1801.00241</a>).

Abstract:In the present paper a direct proof for the interior estimates for mean curvature of convex surfaces in R-3 is given. Meanwhile, when the Gaussian curvature of such a C-2 - convex surface is degenerate on the boundary at degree m where m is some integer, a global lower bound away from zero for mean curvature is also obtained. Therefore, global smooth isometric embedding for smooth positive disks in R-3 can be constructed by means of the techniques in Ref. 12.

Abstract:In this paper, we find three nontrivial characterizations of Euclidean spheres. In the first result, we show that the existence of a nonzero nontrivial concircular vector field $ {\omega } $ on a compact and connected hypersurface $ N $ of the Euclidean space $ R^{m+1} $ with a mean curvature $ \alpha $ constant along the integral curves of $ {\omega } $ and a shape operator $ T $ satisfying $ T({\omega) = \alpha \omega } $ implies that $ \alpha $ is a constant and $ N $ is isometric to a sphere, and the converse also holds. In the second result, we show that the presence of a unit Killing vector field $ \mathbf{v} $ on a compact and connected hypersurface $ N $ of a Euclidean space $ R^{m+1} $ gives a nonzero function $ \sigma = g\left(T \mathbf{v}, \mathbf{v}\right) $ with shape operator $ T $, and the integral of the function $ m\alpha \sigma Ric\left(\mathbf{v}, \mathbf{v}\right) $ has a certain lower bound, and is isometric to an odd-dimensional sphere, and the converse holds too. Finally, we show that for a compact and connected hypersurface $ N $ with support $ \rho $ and basic vector field $ \mathbf{u} $, the integral of the Ricci curvature $ Ric\left(\mathbf{u}, \mathbf{u}\right) $ has a specific lower bound and is necessarily isometric to a sphere, and the converse also holds.
