Abstract:This paper presents a high-accuracy method for solving 2-D incompressible viscous N-S equations in tensor forms. A domain decomposition method was used to divide the computational domain into several regular blocks with the overlapping grid in order to transfer data between sub-domains and to remove numerical singularity caused by domain decomposition. Using the method and algorithm presented above, the flow passing an ellipse was computed and the formation and evolution of the vortex shedding was successfully simulated.

Abstract:A sharp interface capturing method was presented to simulate free surface flow over a stationary obstacle.The efficient interface preserving level set method was used and immersed boundary method was interpolated to handle the air-water and solid-fluid interface.The artificial momentum forcing term was applied at computational nodes where the solid obstacle presented to solve the velocity field,accounting for the impact of the obstacle. The upwinding combined compact difference scheme was adapted to approximate spatial derivative terms in level set function in order to accurately predict the air-water interface.The re-initialization equation for distance function was used to ensure interface front with a very thin thickness.The pressure field of Navier-Stokes equations was effectively solved by the projection method.Two typical cases of the flow propagating over different obstacles,including rectangular and circular cross-sections,were simulated by the method.The numerical results accorded well with the experimental results.The method can accurately simulate the complicated free surface flow with good stability.

Abstract:This paper presents a level set re-distancing (NLS) method to better preserve mass conservation and more accurately predict interface evolution in the simulation of incompressible interfacial flows. In this method, the level set function is first advected by an advection equation. The key to this method depends on the simulation of the re-distancing equation subject to a proper mass-correction term. The performance of the proposed NLS method is verified against benchmark cases such as vortex deforming and Zalesak’s cases. The NLS method is then combined with an explicit Adams–Bashforth scheme on a staggered Eulerian grid to obtain Navier–Stokes solutions. Two-layer liquid sloshing, dam-break flow and Rayleigh–Taylor instability are simulated and compared with numerical or experimental results reported in literature. Two-phase flows that involve nonlinear phenomena such as bubble rising and bubble bursting at a free-surface are also chosen to demonstrate the ability of the proposed method in considering surface tension. The NLS method proposed in this paper is compared with the CLSVOF method of Li and Yu (2019) in terms of computational time in dam-break flow and Rayleigh–Taylor instability cases.

Abstract:It was proved numerically that the Domain Decomposition Method CDDM) with one layer overlapping grids is identical to the block iterative method of linear algebra equations. The results obtained by using DDM could be in reasonable agreement with the results of full-domain simulation. With the three dimensional solver developed by the authors, the flow field in a pipe was simulated by using the full-domain DDM with one layer overlapping grids and with patched grids respectively. Both of the two cases led to the convergent solution. Further research shows the superiority of the DDM with one layer overlapping grids to the DDM with patched grids. A comparison between the numerical results obtained by the authors and the experimental results given by Enayet[3] shows that the numerical results are reasonable.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to present an improved domain decomposition method, and to simulate the flow around a single cylinder and two cylinders in tandem arrangement. For the calculations of flow around a single cylinder, the size of steady vortex at low Re here was close to the results obtained from experiments. For the calculations of flow around two cylinders, research was applied to discuss the lift coefficient, drag coefficient and the frequency of lift curve in various spacing. The results we obtained in this paper are consistent with experiments, and provide us with some basic knowledge about vortex-induced vibration.

Abstract:An LB-DF/FD method, combined with lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) and direct-forcing/fictitious domain (DF/FD) scheme, is set up for fluid-solid interaction problems. The method is validated with simulation of flow past a fixed circular cylinder, a circular cylinder moving in an infinite channel or rotating in an infinite field. Flow around two circular cylinders in tandem at low Reynolds numbers is simulated by using LB-DF/FD method. Effects of spacing gap between cylinders (g *) and Renolds number (Re) are investigated. Numerical results including streamlines, lift and drag force and torque exerted on the cylinder, at Re=0.001, 0.1 and 10, 0.2≤g *≤8.0 are presented. g * shows remarkable effect on lift and drag force and torque exerted on cylinders. Stokes cell number and drag force exerted on cylinders depend on Re.

Abstract:A numerical algorithm using a bilinear or linear finite element and semi-implicit three-step method is presented for the analysis of incompressible viscous fluid problems. The streamline upwind/Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) stabilization scheme is used for the formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations. For the spatial discretization, the convection term is treated explicitly, while the viscous term is treated implicitly, and for the temporal discretization, a three-step method is employed. The present method is applied to simulate the lid driven cavity problems with different geometries at low and high Reynolds numbers. The results compared with other numerical experiments are found to be feasible and satisfactory.

Abstract:The numerical method which is based on flux difference splitting, LU decomposition, and implicit high-resolution third-order Essentially Non-Oscillatory (ENO) scheme was constructed for the efficient computation of steady state solution to three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in general coordinates. The flow fields over underwater axisymmetric bodies, full-appended axisymmetric bodies and axisymmetric bodies with a ring-wing duct were simulated. The method is proved to be capable of predicting the circumferential-mean velocity distribution at model scale to the accuracy of around 3% of measured values, and of predicting some details of flow features, for example, the wake harmonics.

Abstract:In this paper, two versions of a second-order characteristic-based split scheme are developed in the framework of incremental projection method for the solution of incompressible flow problem. After the demonstration of the good accuracy and effectiveness of the developed schemes, a flow over three equal circular cylinders arranged in equilateral-triangle arrangement is numerically investigated on unstructured mesh systems. The examined Reynolds number is 100 and the flow is supposed to be laminar. Computations by the developed algorithm are then performed for six gap spacings, s, ranging from 0.5 to 4.0, and for three incidence angles, α=0°, 30° and 60°. Numerical results show that, at sufficiently small and large s, the range of which is different for different α, the flow interference is dominated by proximity and wake effect, respectively. And in the intermediate range of the spacing, the flow pattern is influenced by both of them. The mean force results are compared with the existing experimental measurements and that shows a similar trend in the variation of mean force with the spacing for different Reynolds number. It is also observed that the interference effect transitions plays an important role in the variation of the fluctuating forces and Strouhal number.

Abstract:Three-dimensional turbulent flows are numerically investigated using finite volume method on unstructured grid. A two-order hybrid differential scheme is proposed in which the dependent variables values at grid vertices are not required to compute. The complex and time-consuming computations on grid vertices and grid dependency problem, which may easily rise from some ordinary differential schemes, can be avoided. Finally the proposed unstructured grid method is used to compute the relatively steady turbulent flows in a centrifugal backswept fan impeller and vaneless diffuser. Comparison between the computations and experimentation shows that the agreements are overall good.

Abstract:An implicit finite-difference method based on the SMAC (Simplified Marker and Cell) scheme for directly solving incompressible unsteady N-S equations is developed. The method is based on the contravariant velocities and the elliptical Poisson pressure equations in general curvilinear coordinates. Numerical results for two-dimensional unsteady separated flows through a cascade are shown. The computed results of the surface pressure coefficient are in satisfactory agreement with the experimental data. The structure of flow fields and the mechanism of unsteady flows are investigated preliminarily. The numerical results indicate that the flows are strong unsteady flows, though the inlet velocity is mean and the boundary conditions are steady. When the angle of attack is small and the Reynolds number is high, periodic fluctuating flow similar to the Kármán vortex street is formed at the trailing edge.

Abstract:Flow past a cylinder and the flow?induced vibration phenomenon are complex engineering problems. We developed a CIP?ZJU ( constrained interpolation profile?Zhejiang University ) model to study the flow past circular and square cylinders for Reynolds numbers Re<300. The model was established in the Cartesian coordinate system, using the CIP method as the base flow solver to discretise the Navier?Stokes equations. The fluid?structure interac?tion was treated as multiphase flow, with liquid and solid phases solved simultaneously. We used an immersed boundary method to deal with the boundary of the solid body. We then compared our computations with available re?sults and obtained good agreements. By introducing pressure and viscous drags, we analyzed the variations in the Strouhal number, drag coefficient, and lift coefficient with the Reynolds numbers. Results show that the variations of the dynamic characteristics differ between the flows past circular and square cylinders.

Abstract:Occurrences of viscous fluid flows in arbitrary internal passages are numerous, an analytical solution of the governing Navier‐Stokes equations cannot be obtained. Even a numerical approach faces difficulties arising from the nonlinearity and complexity of the geometry involved. To remedy these difficulties, the time‐dependent Navier‐Stokes equations are solved by the finite element method wherein a steady‐state solution is assumed when the time‐dependent solution becomes convergent. A family of locally constricted channels was considered in the computations, and in each case, the shear stress at the wall was found to be sharply increased at and near the region of constriction. Computations were carried out to Reynolds numbers when a separation eddy was established. The numerical scheme used seems to be fairly stable.

Abstract:The solution of flow field is decomposed into the contributions of potential flow and the remaining one. Based on potential flow solution, the remaining velocity is solved by a modified N-S equation, in which a much smaller calculation domain is considered due to its rapid decrease in the far field. The flow around 2D cylinder and 3D SUBOFF is simulated. The influence of the range of calculation domain is investigated. Good result is achieved, which indicates that present method is robust and efficient.
Large Eddy Simulation Coupled with Immersed Boundary Method for Turbulent Flows over a Backward Facing Step

Abstract:In the present work, large eddy simulation coupled with immersed boundary (LES-IB) method is applied to simulate a backward facing step (BFS) flow, which is a canonical fluid dynamics problem involving flow separation, recirculation and reattachment that are common in many practical applications. The computed reattachment length, a primary parameter to evaluate the overall performance of the numerical method, shows promising accuracy in the present work compared to the alternative numerical simulations. Based on the mean velocity profiles at four representative locations, there is fairly well quantitative agreement among the present LES-IB, DNS and the experiment. The results reveal that the reverse flow in the reattachment region leads to little over-prediction of the reattachment length compared to the DNS result. Furthermore, second-order statistics are in good agreement with the reference data in spite of discrepancies in the recirculation and reattachment region owing to complex flow structure, verifying the accuracy of the present method. In addition, the instantaneous flow fields are also analyzed to show the capability of the present LES-IB method in vortex-capture, and one may see the transient process of flow separation based on the analysis of Lagrangian coherent structure (LCS).

Abstract:A numerical simulation scheme of 3D incompressible viscous fluid in a box flow passage is developed to solve Navier–Stokes (N–S) equations by firstly taking fluid–structure interaction (FSI) into account. This numerical scheme with FSI is based on the polynomial differential quadrature (PDQ) approximation technique, in which motions of both the fluid and the solid boundary structures are well described. The flow passage investigated consists of four rectangular plates, of which two are rigid, while another two are elastic. In the simulation the elastic plates are allowed to vibrate subjected to excitation of the time-dependent dynamical pressure induced by the unsteady flow in the passage. Meanwhile, the vibrating plates change the flow pattern by producing many transient sources and sinks on the plates. The effects of FSI on the flow are evaluated by running numerical examples with the incoming flow’s Reynolds numbers of 3000, 7000 and 10,000, respectively. Numerical computations show that FSI has significant influence on both the velocity and pressure fields, and the DQ method developed here is effective for modelling 3D incompressible viscous fluid with FSI.

Abstract:To enhance the stability and accurate when calculated the complicated turbomachinery rows, an inlet/outlet condition as called general boundary condition and an advanced strongly implicit iterative method named MSIP were presented. Based on rotational arbitrarily curved coordinate and RNG improved k e turbulence model, the three dimensional calculating for a counter rotating axial fan indicate that it is not appropriate to allocate the maximum load at the blade tip when make an aerodynamic design for axial fan or compressor, especially for counter rotating system.

Abstract:The vorticity-velocity formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations are solved by viscous vortex method. The fractional step technique has been used. The viscous diffusion is treated by a random walk method, the no-slip condition is not always enforced by the generation of new vortices at the boundary but instead by modifying the strength of the vortices in the vicinity of the boundary; Particle-Box method is used to reduce the operation counts to O(N log N) from 0(N 2). The time dependent viscous flow around a circular cylinder and two circular cylinders in tandem arrangement of difference spacing at Reynolds numbers of Re=3000 is presented.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop the numerical theory of decoupled modified characteristic finite element method with different subdomain time steps for the mixed stabilized formulation of nonstationary dual-porosity-Navier-Stokes model. Based on partitioned time-stepping methods, the system is decoupled, which means that the Navier-Stokes equations and two different Darcy equations are solved independently at each time step of subdomain. In particular, the Navier-Stokes equations are solved by the modified characteristic finite element method, which overcome the computational difficulties caused by the nonlinear term. In order to increase the efficiency, different time steps are used to different subdomains. The stability of this method is proved. In addition, we verify the optimal $L^2$-norm error convergence order of the solutions by mathematical induction, whose proof implies the uniform $L^{\infty}$-boundedness of the fully discrete velocity solution. Finally, some numerical tests are presented to show efficiency of the proposed method.
