Abstract:Chaotic mixing is regarded as an effective method to improve the mixing effect in the laminar stirred tank.To generate chaos in flow field in stirred tank,many efforts including aperiodic movement,asystematic installation impeller,etc.,were made to save mixing time and energy consumption.The computational fluid dynamics of chaotic flow field and the hyperchaotic controlling method as well as macro-instability were reviewed.Multiple flow field coupling is important in the turbulent mixing region of stirred tank.The development trends of flow field coupling and hyperchaotic controlling in chaotic mixing were prospected in energy saving operation.

Abstract:The progress of the experimental researches and numerical simulations of the flow fields in stirred tanks was described.The measurement methods of velocity fields,temperature fields,mixing time and circulation flow were introduced,and various turbulence models and the processing methods of the rotary paddles concerned in the numerical simulations of the flow fields in stirred tanks were compared and analyzed.Finally,it was pointed out that stirred tanks should be emphatically studied in heat transfer characteristics,multiphase flow and multi-parameter coupled mathematical models.

Abstract:The dynamics of nanoparticle-laden multiphase flow is a new and important research field.To understand the basic interaction between phases and their physical nature,some problems are studied,including the closure for particle general dynamic equations;the construction of the coagulation kernel;the fundamental interaction between particle dynamics and flow coherent structures;the theoretical analysis on collision rate and some engineering applications.A new general mathematical method for solving the general dynamic equation is proposed,and applied in some engineering problems.

Abstract:Introduction: For the Navier-Stokes equation, one of the most essential tasks should be to study its completeness of the complex nonlinear systems. Also, its nature and physical practical applications would be depth explored. Moreover, as one of the routes to chaos, this equation with an external force has been investigated numerically in 1989. Recently, some information is worth noting that when the high symmetry was imposed on the velocity field, the complex nonlinear motions should occur even lead to the chaos phenomenon. However, most of the published papers are based on theoretical studies and rarely deal with the above results, which lost of the match between them and the integrity of the scientific system. Methods: This study analyzed the molecular distillation process in detail based on the basic theory of nonlinear chaotic systems. Then, the mathematical model for the process of molecular distillation with one brushless DC motor (BLDCM) is built and named the Molecular-Distillation-Navier-Stokes (MDNS) equation. Also, its complex and potentially chaotic behaviors and chaotic processes are first discovered and demonstrated, such as chaotic attractors, chaotic co-attractors, phase portraits, time-domain waveforms, Lyapunov exponent spectrums, Poincare maps, the bifurcation diagrams, and so on. Results: The good agreement among theoretical analysis, simulation and experimental results verifies the practicability and flexibility of the configured model. Discussion: The related conclusions have supplemented and improved the theoretical system for the Navier Stokes equations. Also, it reflects the significance in molecular distillation processes. Meanwhile, the novel research direction for the fields of the chaotic nonlinear and complex industrial systems have been explored and discovered.

Abstract:Elimination of segregated zones is important to intensify the global chaotic mixing of high-viscosity fluids. Diameter-transformed stirred tank (DTST) reactor as a new process-intensification equipment is proposed. Through the PLIF technique, tracer transport CFD modeling, and Poincare sections, we investigate the mixing structures inside a DTST reactor, and find that the DTST reactor can trigger global chaotic mixing. This is due to the wall squeezing effect, causing the fluid particle in periodic motion to become disordered. From the perspective of mixing kinetics, an area coverage model A = A(max)(1 - e(-Eamt)) is developed to quantitatively characterize its mixing efficiency, and the maximum area coverage Amax is 98.12 %. In addition, to help practitioners quickly select a suitable DTST reactor under different working conditions, machine learning-based flow pattern prediction models are proposed, among the ANNc model has a highest accuracy of 97.6 %. The decision boundary can be expressed by the Rec-E discriminant lg(Re-c) = 2.3/(E - 0.95)(0.18) - 1.

Experimental and Computational Multiphase Flow

Abstract:This paper mainly reviews the research progress on multiphase flow in nuclear engineering. This paper is composed of three parts. The first part documents a literature statistical analysis based on publications, mainly the SCIE-indexed papers collected in the Web of Science. The analysis data of publications on multiphase flows showcase the prosperous future of the current Experimental and Computational Multiphase Flow journal. The second part summarizes advanced measurement technology and microscale and nanoscale multiphase flow research in terms of modeling and algorithms. The third part reviews the current progress in multiphase flow-related research in nuclear engineering. Various aspects of solid-liquid, gas-liquid, and gas-particle flows, in particular, critical heat flux research and deep learning applications in nuclear engineering, have been extensively reviewed. This paper aims to explore multiphase flow research in the future in the nuclear and its related disciplines through the analysis and review of cutting-edge research and development states.
Theoretical And Experimental Aanalysis Of Chaotic Mixing Efficiency Of Plug Flow In Different Geometry

Abstract:Improved mixing is particularly important at high Peclet numbers, that is, when advection dominates over diffusion. Mixing multiple fluids based on plugs flow is a better approach in such case. In order to understand the mixing mechanism based on plug flow, theoretical analysis based on chaotic concept were carried out. It is proved that there is linked twist map (LTM) possessing the Bernoulli property and consequential chaos in the plug. In addition, a micro-resolution particle image velocimetry (Micro-PIV) is used to measure the flow field in liquid plug 'involving liquid species to be mixed. Two recirculating flows forming in plugs can enhance the mixing efficiency because folding and stretching of the liquids oc,cured deterministically in plugs. The mixing efficiency in winding microchannel with plugs is proved to be much higher than that of other micromixer when the initial species distribution being in layer along stream. These results are helpful to optimize the structure of micromixer and to develop droplet based microfluidic system.

Abstract:The stretching and folding of fluid element during chaotic mixing field is studied using numerical method. The chaotic mixing process is caused by periodic secondary flow in a twisted curved pipe. Using the nonlinear discrete velocity field as the dynamical system, the present study connects the fluid particle's stretching along its trajectory in one period to a linearized time-varying variational equation. After numerical approximation of the variational equation, fluid stretching is calculated on the whole cross section. The stretching distribution shows an exponential fluid stretching and folding, which indicates an excellent mixing performance.

Abstract:Non-Newtonian fluid multiphase flow and heat transfer phenomena were overviewed.Progresses in both experimental and numerical investigation on non-Newtonian fluid multiphase flow and heat transfer in pipes were analyzed based on open literatures.Some promising research interests and worthwhile themes on non-Newtonian multiphase flow and heat transfer in micro and mini-channels were proposed and discussed.Key technologies exploring into the non-Newtonian fluidic in micro and mini scale,such as test channel microfabrication,flow visualization and flow patterns identification,flow parameters measurement and non-Newtonian fluid convective heat transfer model,were discussed and presented.The visualized test loops of gas/non-Newtonian fluid two-phase flow and flow boiling heat transfer were designed and described.It is instructive for further exploring the characteristics of non-Newtonian multiphase flow and heat transfer in micro-and mini-channels.

Abstract:Based on experimental investigation and bifurcation analysis on two-phase natural circulation system,certain nonlinear mechanisms of the system,especially static bifurcation features and hysteresis effect,are verified and discussed in this paper.Study of time series of the dynamic parameters is carried out in both time and frequency domains,with boiling eruption induced relaxation instability mechanism under certain conditions being suggested and investigated.Further,through the phase space reconstruction of relating time series and fractal analysis,discussion to nonlinear evolution of the system with varying heating power is delivered.

Abstract:The time-spatial distribution and the fluctuation behavior of void fraction wave and pressure wave are very important for understanding the mechanism of heat transfer of liquid-vapor two-phase flow. Based on the study of fluctuation behavior of pressure wave in liquid-gas two-phase flow in this paper the nonlinear and chaotic behavior of two-phase boiling system have been investigated by both theoretical and experimental method. According to the principles of deterministic chaotic dynamics and time series analysis theory an integrated chaos time series analysis software (WLCHAOS) was implemented. The experimental investigation has been made in R113 boiling liquid-vapor two-phase system to examine above new method.The results show following conclusions:The Chaos Time Series Analysis method (CTSA method) as a new and useful qualitative tools can be applied to study the nonlinear dynamic instability of heat transfer of boiling two-phase system.The investigation of R113 boiling two-phase experiments shows when the void fraction increased in slug flow, the flow has propagated more violent fluctuation and the slugs have broken disorderly, the flow regime is thrown into churn flow. Using our data treatment software (WLCHAOS) the time series, the power spectra and the phase-space trajectories obtained from experimental data of this flow pattern transmit have shown the churn flow came into chaotic state.

Abstract:Leveraging big data signal processing offers a pathway to the development of artificial intelligence-driven equipment. The analysis of fluid flow signals and the characterization of fluid flow behavior are of critical in two-phase flow studies. Significant research efforts have focused on discerning flow regimes using various signal analysis methods. In this review, recent advances in time series signals analysis algorithms for stirred tank reactors have been summarized, and the detailed methodologies are categorized into the frequency domain methods, time–frequency domain methods, and state space methods. The strengths, limitations, and notable findings of each algorithm are highlighted. Additionally, the interrelationships between these methodologies have also been discussed, as well as the present progress achieved in various applications. Future research directions and challenges are also predicted to provide an overview of current research trends in data mining of time series for analyzing flow regimes and chaotic signals. This review offers a comprehensive summary for extracting and characterizing fluid flow behavior and serves as a theoretical reference for optimizing the characterization of chaotic signals in future research endeavors.

Abstract:The complexity analysis of the flow field is of great significance for studying the flow mechanism and strengthening the mixing. The multiscale flow field of dynamic impinging stream reactors is studied by experimental and theoretical methods. The chaotic characteristic parameters (correlation dimension, K entropy, the largest Lyapunov exponent) are investigated under different nozzle spacing L , different outlet velocity difference v d , and different outlet average velocity v p . The flow mechanism of dynamic impinging stream mesoscale flow field is revealed. The results show that the flow field of dynamic impinging stream reactor presents chaotic characteristics, and the chaotic characteristic parameters firstly increases and then decreases with the increase of nozzle spacing L . With the increase of outlet velocity difference and average outlet velocity, the chaotic characteristic parameters show an increasing trend. The time-frequency analysis of the microscale flow field in the dynamic impinging stream reactor is carried by Stockwell transform to obtain the energy evolution, the flow mechanism is further revealed. With the increase of outlet velocity difference and average outlet velocity, the energy of flow field gradually accumulates to the low frequency region, and the flow field energy enlarges. The radial flow field of dynamic impinging stream impact center is divided into radial jet region and radial vortex region by the energy characteristic. According to the analysis of chaotic characteristics and energy evolution of dynamic impinging stream, the optimal working condition is that nozzle spacing L =4 d , outlet velocity difference is 1m/s, and outlet average velocity is 1.7m/s.

Abstract:Two-phase flow instability and dynamics of a parallel multichannel system has been theoretically studied under periodic excitation induced by rolling motion in the present research. Based on the homogeneous flow model considering the rolling motion, the parallel multichannel model and system control equations are established by using the control volume integrating method. Gear method is used to solve the system control equations. The influences of the inlet, upward sections, and heating power on the flow instability under rolling motion have been analyzed. The marginal stability boundary (MSB) under rolling motion condition is obtained. The unstable regions occur in both low and high equilibrium quality and inlet subcooling regions. The multiplied period phenomenon occurs in the high equilibrium quality region and the chaos phenomenon appears on the right of MSB. The concept of stability space is presented.

Abstract:The jet impingement–negative‐pressure reactor (JI‐NPR) is a continuous and efficient technology designed to remove ammonia without clogging. Prior research has discovered that the changing movement of a porous jet impinging under negative‐pressure conditions is distinguished by a more pronounced distribution over many regions. This study utilizes the CFD numerical simulation method in conjunction with the MATLAB platform to investigate the fractal characteristics of water phase distribution, velocity, turbulence intensity, vortex amount, and other parameters at various locations. The fractal dimension is employed as a criterion to analyze the chaotic characteristics of this multi‐area distribution phenomenon. The study demonstrates that the effectiveness of deamination removal can be enhanced by quantitatively assessing the complex characteristics in the fluid flow using the chaotic fractal theory, which facilitates the identification of the ideal parameter settings. The optimal deamination effect can be achieved in the reactor when the jet velocity is set to 3.45 m/s and the negative pressure is maintained at 20 400 Pa.

Abstract:The study of chaotic phenomena in partial differential equations is a challenging subject. In this paper, we survey the recent progress in the study of chaotic vibration of the linear wave equation with nonlinear boundary feedback control law. We show that when there is linear energy injection at one end of the boundary and the self-regulating or van der Pol nonlinearity at the, other end of the boundary, chaos occurs as a reconciliation between linear instability and nonlinear self-regulation when the parameters enter a certain regime. A list of open problems is also posed.

Abstract:Plasma is the fourth state of matter,in which a large quantity of highly active species can enhance the conventional chemical reactions and show non-conventional effect of external field.On one hand,plasmas change the fluid properties at atomic/molecular scale;on the other hand,the phase contact behaviors are alternated at meso-scale,which forms unique features of fluid dynamics,transport phenomena and reactions in multiphase flows.This work gives an overview on the fundamental study and industrial development of low-temperature plasma assisted multiphase reactive processes,including coal pyrolysis to acetylene in thermal plasma,gas-solid catalysis,CPVC synthesis and gas-liquid reaction in cold plasmas.
Hydrodynamics research of wastewater treatment bioreactors

Abstract:To optimize the design and improve the performance of wastewater treatment bioreactors, the review concerning the hydrodynamics explored by theoretical equations, process experiments, modeling of the hydrodynamics and flow field measurement is presented. Results of different kinds of experiments show that the hydro-dynamic characteristics can affect sludge characteristics, mass transfer and reactor performance significantly. Along with the development of theoretical equations, turbulence models including large eddy simulation models and Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) models are widely used at present. Standard and modified k-ε models are the most widely used eddy viscosity turbulence models for simulating flows in bioreactors. Numerical simulation of hydrodynamics is proved to be efficient for optimizing design and operation. The development of measurement techniques with high accuracy and low intrusion enables the flow filed in the bioreactors to be transparent. Integration of both numerical simulation and experimental measurement can describe the hydrodynamics very well.
