Adjustment of the morphological, structural, and linear/nonlinear optical parameters of zinc oxide nanostructures through cobalt-doping for optical applications

Abstract:In this work, the morphological, structural, and linear/nonlinear optical properties of ZnO nanostructures have been controlled through cobalt-doping. Undoped and cobalt-doped zinc oxide nanostructures were synthesized on glass substrates by the spray pyrolysis procedure. The morphological and elemental investigations were performed by SEM and EDX spectroscopy techniques. The chemical bonding and structure variations of the nanostructures were examined by the FT-IR spectroscopy technique. The XRD investigations were applied to explore the structural properties of the prepared samples. The UV–Visible-NIR spectroscopy method was performed to investigate the linear/nonlinear optical properties of all nanostructures. The energy gap of ZnO nanostructures has been tuned through cobalt-doping. Obvious enhancement is achieved in the refractive index, optical conductivity, and dielectric constants of ZnO nanostructures by Co-doping. Moreover, the nonlinear optical (NLO) investigations reveal a significant enrichment of the NLO susceptibility and nonlinear refractive index of ZnO as a result of Co-doping. The achieved findings enclosed in this study nominate new applications of ZnO nanostructures in modern optical devices.
