Abstract:In present work, the SHIELD code system have been used to investigate the physics properties of spallation neutron target, such as the neutron spectra, the yield, the radioactivity in the target and the target size etc. The fragment mass distribution of the residual nuclei from proton-induced spallation reaction on thick lead target with energy 1.6 GeV have been analysed also. Radiation damage, such as radiation damage cross-section, displacement atom cross-section, the rate of displacement atom, and displacement production rates in target Pb induced from intermediate energy proton and neutron incident were investigated.

Abstract:The energy deposition in the target of 208Pb with the length of 0.6 m and the radius of 0.1 m induced by proton is analyzed by using the SHIELD code. The results calculated by SHIELD code are in good agreement with the measured data of 1 GeV proton into the Be, C, Al, Cu, Pb and U targets. The maps of power density distribution in the target are obtained with the proton beam intensity 10 mA and the energy 1.5 GeV.

Abstract:The technique of the geometric design and graphic displaying of GEANT3 is adopted in the SHIELD code. Some examples of complicated spallation targets are designed and discussed. With the proton beam energy of 150MeV, our results show that the best thickness of W spallation target is 5cm; 5.0-5.8 neutrons can be produced per GeV of beam energy for properly designed W target; the material damage and the radiation deposits are concentrated in the beam axes of about 2 cm long; scattered proton beam may alleviate the concentration, but may also lower the neutron production.

Abstract:The power density distribution behavior of the ADS spallation target, which is a key factor in the thermal-hydraulic and mechanical design of the high-power ADS target, was investigated under different proton incident energy. A Chinese ADS conceptual design of spallation target was proposed in this paper. The deposition heat in the spallation target was calculated by MCNPX code. From the results, it was found that the Bragg peak phenomenon weakens as the proton source incident energy increases. Large Bragg peak was observed for proton incident energy below 500MeV, however for the proton source energy above 900MeV, Bragg peak phenomena was not obvious. Analysis on the nuclear reactions behavior and ionization process induced by source proton in the target was carried out to address this issue. Meanwhile, the results show that the proton leakage rate from the target, which is an important factor in proton radiation shielding, greatly depends on the proton range (penetration depth) under different incident energy. In order to stop or keep the protons in the target, the minimum axial length (in the incoming particles direction) of the target at a given proton source incident energy should be determined according to the corresponding proton range. The results of this paper will be useful to guide the design of spallation target of a reference ADS.

Abstract:The back-streaming neutrons from the spallation target at CSNS are very intense, and can pose serious damage problems for the devices in the accelerator-target interface region. To tackle the problems, a possible scheme for this region was studied, namely a specially designed optics for the proton beam line produces two beam waists, and two collimators are placed at the two waist positions to maximize the collimation effect of the back-streaming neutrons. Detailed Monte Carlo simulations with the beams in the two different CSNS phases show the effectiveness of the collimation system, and the radiation dose rate decreases largely in the interface section. This can ensure the use of epoxy coils for the last magnets and other devices in the beam transport line with reasonable lifetimes, e.g. thirty years. The design philosophy for such an accelerator-target interface region can also be applicable to other high-power proton beam applications.

Thermal-Hydraulic Analysis of Spallation Target in Accelerator Driven Sub-critical System

Abstract:The spallation target is located in the center of an accelerator driven sub-critical system (ADS), which produces neutron source for nuclear transmutation. Based on the analysis of the thermal-hydraulic demands for spallation target, lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) was chosen as the spallation target and the coolant for the ADS. MCNP code was used to calculate the deposition heat in the spallation target, and the CFD code FLUENT was employed to calculate the thermal-hydraulic behavior in the spallation target zone. Different design parameters as well as different window shapes were analyzed in order to find their effects to the temperature distribution and velocity distribution, and the suitable design options were found to meet the thermal-hydraulic requirements.

Abstract:The spatial and energy distribution of spallation neutrons have an effect on the performance of Accelerator Driven Subcritical systems. In this work, the spatial, energy distribution of spallation neutrons and the effect of these factors on proton efficiency was studied. When the radius of spallation region increases, backward neutrons were found to have a rather big ratio and have a positive effect on proton efficiency. By making better use of these neutrons, we may increase the radius of target to satisfy some other requirements in the design of subcritical core.

Abstract:Focal spot effects on the generation of proton beams are investigated by a high-intensity high-contrast laser irradiating on solid foil in target normal sheath acceleration experiments. Different spot size, transverse shape, and intensity of the laser are obtained by appropriately using deformable mirrors and parabolic mirrors. Experiments show that the maximum proton energy is mainly determined by the laser intensity if the focal spot size is not seriously changed. Compared with the previous experimental results, the optimum foil thickness d(o) is scaled by the laser intensity I as d(o) similar to I-0.33. The corresponding theoretical estimation is carried out as d(o) similar to I-0.25 for ultra-high intensity laser systems with similar contrast. MULTI and particle-in-cell simulations are used to interpret the experimental results.

Abstract:The simulation research of the neutron and photon energy and angle distribution produced by 100 MeV electron bombarding the Ta target using Geant4 has been done.Comparing and analyzing the energy and amount of neutron and photon distribution, the detector angle has been determined.Combining the neutron measurement theory and the condition of the experiment site, the detection position has been determined.On the basic shielding lead condition, comparing the photon pulse width distribution of different length shielding lead in front, the best shielding lead condition of very fast neutron spectrum measurement has been determined.

Abstract:The cross sections of high energy neutron-induced spallation is useful for studying the transmutation of long-life fission products. However, due to the difficulty of obtaining high-energy neutrons, the experimental data are still scarce. The present work studies the possibility to produce high energy neutrons by interactions between deuteron beam and thick target. The Geant4 toolkit is applied to simulate the interaction between the deuteron beam and thick target. An analytical method is also developed to calculate the neutron yields emitted in the interaction between the deuteron beam and thick target. The input cross section data is not only taken from the TEDNL-2017 library but also calculated by the isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics model. It is indicated that it is possible to produce high energy neutron by deuteron beam interaction with matter. If one wants to get high energy neutrons, low-Z matter, thin target, and small emission angle may be considered.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a monitoring method for neutron flux for the spallation target used in an accelerator driven sub-critical (ADS) system, where a spallation target located vertically at the centre of a sub-critical core is bombarded vertically by high-energy protons from an accelerator. First, by considering the characteristics in the spatial variation of neutron flux from the spallation target, we propose a multi-point measurement technique, i.e. the spallation neutron flux should be measured at multiple vertical locations. To explain why the flux should be measured at multiple locations, we have studied neutron production from a tungsten target bombarded by a 250 MeV-proton beam with Geant4-based Monte Carlo simulations. The simulation results indicate that the neutron flux at the central location is up to three orders of magnitude higher than the flux at lower locations. Secondly, we have developed an effective technique in order to measure the spallation neutron flux with a fission chamber (FC), by establishing the relation between the fission rate measured by FC and the spallation neutron flux. Since this relation is linear for a FC, a constant calibration factor is used to derive the neutron flux from the measured fission rate. This calibration factor can be extracted from the energy spectra of spallation neutrons. Finally, we have evaluated the proposed calibration method for a FC in the environment of an ADS system. The results indicate that the proposed method functions very well.

Scattering effect in proton beam windows at spallation targets

Abstract:Proton beam window (PBW) is a boundary wall between a high vacuum area in the proton beam line and the helium atmosphere in a helium vessel at a high beam power target. The thermal and mechanical problems of the PBW have been studied in other spallation neutron sources; however, the scattering effect in PBW is seldom reported in literature but it may pose serious problems for the target design if not well treated. This paper will report the simulation studies of the scattering effect in PBW. Different materials and different structures of PBW are discussed. Taking CSNS as an example, a thin single-layer aluminum alloy PBW with edge cooling has been chosen for CSNS-I and CSNS-II, and a sandwiched aluminum alloy PBW has been chosen for CSNS-III. Simulations results of the scattering effect in the presence of beam uniformization at target by using non-linear magnets at the different CSNS PBWs are presented. The simulations show that the scattering effect at PBW is very important in the beam loss and the beam distribution at the target.

Abstract:A concept design of spallation target in Chinese Accelerator Driven Subcritical System (ADS) was proposed in this paper. Spallation target is located in the center of an ADS, which produces neutron source for nuclear transmutation. The thermal-hydraulic demands for spallation target were proposed, and Lead-Bismuth Eutectic (LBE) was chosen as the spallation target and the coolant for the ADS. The target can fulfill the design tasks under current design parameters. Abstract:In an accelerator-driven subcritical system (ADS), a high-performance spallation neutron source is used to feed the subcritical reactor. Neutron generation depends on the proton beam intensity. If the beam intensity is increased by a given factor, the number of generated neutrons will increase. The mechanism yielding a high rate of neutron production per energy is the spallation process, and this mechanism produces a very high-energy deposition in the spallation target material. Producing a high rate of neutrons is accompanied by creation of problems of decay heat cooling and radiological protection. As a first step in designing a full-scale industrial ADS, a small-scale experimental ADS, which is similar to the European experimental ADS (XADS) is analysed. The analysis presented in this paper is based on lead–bismuth eutectic (LBE) cooled XADS-type experimental reactors, designed during the European experimental (PDS-XADS) project. Computational fluid dynamics analysis has been carried out for the spallation target. Steady state behaviour and shear stress transport turbulence model with the automatic wall treatment were applied in the present analysis.

Abstract:The spallation and fragmentation reactions of Xe-136 induced by proton, deuteron, and carbon targets at 168 MeV/nucleon were studied at RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory via the inverse kinematics technique. A wide range of isotopic distributions of the reaction cross sections has been obtained and systematically analyzed by using the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS) including dynamical and intranuclear cascade processes plus evaporation process, the semi-empirical parametrization for residue cross sections in spallation reactions (SPACS) and empirical parametrization of fragmentation cross sections (EPAX), and the deuteron-induced reaction analysis code system (DEURACS) incorporating the deuteron breakup effect. The carbon target has exhibited strong potential to produce light-mass isotopes far away from the projectile, in comparison to proton and deuteron targets. This may be attributed to the possible higher excitation energies of the prefragment induced by heavier target. It is demonstrated that the deuteron target has advantages to produce isotopic chains very close to the projectile and also the neutron-rich nuclei in other isotopic chains far away from the projectile, due basically to its structure property and the effect of the breakup neutron in the peripheral collision processes. The proton target has the advantage of being able to produce isotopes produced via charge-pickup reactions in comparison to other targets. The prediction powers of various calculation codes are examined with respective to the experimental isotopic distributions. The target and energy dependences of the produced mass distributions are also discussed.

Abstract:Previous experiments have shown that high-intensity laser interaction with a solid target can be regarded as a new ionizing radiation source.The radioprotection issue attracts a growing concern worldwide.In order to effectively control the radiological hazard from the X-ray produced by high-intensity laser interaction with solid targets,transmission curves and tenth-value layer (TVL) values in common shielding materials are studied.In this paper,a shielding calculation model was established using Monte Carlo code FLUKA.A specialized routine was developed to solve the problem of repeated scoring caused by the backscattering of particles.Transimitted doses were then obtained for various shielding thicknesses in a single run.The results show that for electron temperatures of 0.5-10 MeV,the TVL value in concrete increases with the electron temperature and ranges from 24to 56 cm;In lead,except for the first TVL,the equilibrium TVL value shows less correlation with the electron temperature and ranges from 4.7-5.4 em.In addition,for the high electron temperature,the first TVL value is significantly affected by the distance between the shielding material and the detector.
