Abstract:Quantum state preparation plays an equally important role as quantum operations and measurements in quantum information processing. The previous methods for initialization require either an exponential number of experiments, or cause signal reduction or place restrictions on molecular structures. In this study, we propose three types of quantum circuits for preparing the pseudo-pure states of (n − 1) qubits in the n-coupled Hilbert space, which simply needs the assistance of one ancilla spin and two different experiments independent of n. Most importantly, our methods work well on homo-nuclear and hetero-nuclear molecules without the reduction of signals in the gradient field. As a proof-of-principle demonstration, we experimentally prepared the pseudo-pure states of heteronuclear 2-qubit and homonuclear 4-qubit molecules using a nuclear magnetic resonance quantum information processor.

Abstract:Basing on the temporal averaging, schedules to prepare 3-qubit and 4-qubit pesudo-pure states in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) quantum computation are presented in this paper. Utilizing Lambda(n) (not) gate, our schedules reduced the experiment number that is needed to prepare pesudo-pure state in a homonuclear spin system: only three experiments are needed to prepare 3-qubit peudo-pure state; and only five experiments are needed to prepare 4-qubit peudo-pure state. Then we implemented the schedule for 3-qubit psudo-pure state in a chain-coupled spin system to confirm the schedule, and gave the simulation result of the schedule for the 4-qubit peudo-pure state.

Abstract:Pseudo-pure state (PPS) preparation is crucial in nuclear magnetic resonance quantum computation. There have been some methods in spin-1/2 systems and a few attempts in quadrupolar spin systems. As optimal control via gradient ascent pulses engineering (GRAPE) has been widely used in quantum information science, we apply this technique to PPS preparation in quadrupolar spin systems. This approach shows an effective and fast quantum control method for both the state preparation and the realization of quantum gates in quadrupolar systems.

Abstract:Quantum information processing by liquid-state NMR spectroscopy uses pseudo-pure states to mimic the evolution and observations on true pure states. A new method of preparing pseudo-pure states is described, which involves the selection of the spatially labeled states of an ancilla spin with which the spin system of interest is correlated. This permits a general procedure to be given for the preparation of pseudo-pure states on any number of spins, subject to the limitations imposed by the loss of signal from the selected subensemble. The preparation of a single pseudo-pure state is demonstrated by carbon and proton NMR on 13C-labeled alanine. With a judicious choice of magnetic field gradients, the method further allows encoding of up to 2^N pseudo-pure states in independent spatial modes in an N+1 spin system. Fast encoding and decoding schemes are demonstrated for the preparation of four such spatially labeled pseudo-pure states.

Abstract:Quantum state preparation plays an equally important role with quantum operations and measurements in quantum information processing. The previous methods of preparing initial state for bulk quantum computation all have inevitable disadvantages, such as, requiring multiple experiments, causing loss of signals, or requiring molecules with restrictive structure. In this work, three kinds of quantum circuits are introduced to prepare the pseudo-pure states of ($n-1$) qubits in the Hilbert space of $n$ coupled spins which merely need the assist of one ancilla spin and two experiments independent of $n$. Being without gradient fields effectively avoids the reduction of the signals. Our methods have no special requirements on the structure of the used molecules. To test these methods more comprehensively, we experimentally demonstrate the preparation of the labeled pseudo-pure states using heteronuclear 2-qubit and homonuclear 4-qubit nuclear magnetic resonance quantum information processor.

Abstract:A simple method is proposed to prepare conveniently the effective pure state |00...0><0...00| with any number of qubits in a quantum ensemble. The preparation is based on the temporal averaging (Knill, Chuang, and Laflamme, Phys.Rev.A 57, 3348(1998)). The quantum circuit to prepare the effective pure state is designed in a unified and systematical form and is explicitly decomposed completely into a product of a series of one-qubit quantum gates and the two-qubit diagonal quantum gates. The preparation could be programmed and implemented conveniently on an NMR quantum computer.

Abstract:A quantum circuit is introducted to describe the preparation of a labeled pseudo-pure state by mutiplet-component excitation scheme which has been experimentally implemented on a 4-qubit nuclear magnetic resonance quantum processor. Meanwhile, we theoretically analyze and numerically inverstigate the low-power selective single-pulse implementation of a controlled-rotation gate, which manifests its validity in our experiment. Based on the labeled pseudo-pure state prepared, a 3-qubit Bernstein-Vazirani algorithm has been experimentally demonstrated by spectral implementation. The "answers" of the computations are indentified from the split speak positions in the spectra of the observer spin, which are equivalent to projective measurements required by the algorithms.

Abstract:An alternative method for preparing an effective-pure state in a subsystem of a three-spin system for quantum information processing(QIP) in liquid-state nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR) was demonstrated experimentally.With the aid of numerical search methods,strongly modulating pulses(SMP) scheme was obtained and can perform accurate,arbitrary,selective gates on a three-qubit system.Compared with low-power(nuclear-selective) pulse scheme,the number of shaped pulses and the width of each pulse were both reduced.A pair of two-qubit subspace effective-pure states within a three-spin system was acquired simultaneously.The tomography for the spin system agreed with theoretical predictions,which shows that the experiments were successfully implemented.The short pulse-width of SMP substantially reduced the effects of relaxation within the period of pulse.This is very useful for NMR QIP involving larger numbers of qubits.

Abstract:How to use shared entanglement and forward classical communication to remotely prepare an arbitrary (mixed or pure) state has been fascinating quantum information scientists. Berry has given a constructive scheme for remotely preparing a general pure state, using a pure entangled state and finite classical communication. To optimize the classical communication cost, Berry employed a coding of the high-dimensional target state. Though working in the high-dimensional cases, the coding method is inapplicable for low-dimensional systems, such as a pure qubit. Since qubit plays a central role in quantum information theory, here we propose an optimization procedure which can be used to minimize the classical communication cost in preparing a general pure qubit. Interestingly, our optimization procedure is linked to the uniform arrangement of N points on the Bloch sphere, which provides a geometric description.

Abstract:Theoretical Quantum Information Processing (QIP) has matured from the use of qubits to the use of qudits (systems having states> 2). Where as most of the experimental implementations have been performed using qubits, little experimental work has been carried out using qudits as yet. In this paper we demonstrate experimental realization of a qutrit system by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), utilizing deuterium (spin-1) nuclei partially oriented in liquid crystalline phase. Preparation of pseudopure states and implementation of unitary operations are demonstrated in this single-qutrit system, using transition selective pulses.

Abstract:Ground state preparation is a key area where quantum computers are expected to prove advantageous. Double-bracket quantum algorithms (DBQAs) have been recently proposed to diagonalize Hamiltonians and in this work we show how to use them to prepare ground states. We propose to improve an initial state preparation by adding a few steps of DBQAs. The interfaced method systematically achieves a better fidelity while significantly reducing the computational cost of the procedure. For a Heisenberg model, we compile our algorithm using CZ and single-qubit gates into circuits that match capabilities of near-term quantum devices. Moreover, we show that DBQAs can benefit from the experimental availability of increasing circuit depths. Whenever an approximate ground state can be prepared without exhausting the available circuit depth, then DBQAs can be enlisted to algorithmically seek a higher fidelity preparation.

Abstract:In the presentation of single quantum state on Bloch sphere,a strategy of optimal preparation of arbitrary quantum state of electron spin quantum systems is proposed.By using the mechanical logic gate,the manipulation of quantum system is realized by way of unitary-evolution.In the course,a switch idea for the control systems is presented. The models of quantum systems and the control systems using invariant magnetic field are then established.With the help of the Lie group and the classical control theory,a strategy of optimal preparation of arbitrary quantum state is also realized. Finally,the theoretical analysis and the simulation of the preparation indicate the advantage of the idea.

Abstract:The preparation of quantum states serves as a pivotal subroutine across various domains, including quantum communication protocols, quantum computing, and the exploration of quantum correlations and other resources within physical systems. Building upon the protocols introduced in previous works [M. B. Pozzobom and J. Maziero, Quantum Inf. Process. 18, 142 (2019)] and [E. R. Gårding et al., Entropy 23, 797 (2021)], the authors of [F. Shahbeigi, M. Karimi and V. Karimipour, Phys. Scr. 97, 025101 (2022)] demonstrated the capability to prepare mixed two-qubit X-real states on quantum computers by extending the methodology initially devised for mixed two-qubit Bell-diagonal states. In this article, we delve into an overlooked pattern within these quantum circuits, allowing us to generalize the approach to encompass a broader scope. Presenting an algorithm tailored for the preparation of $d$-dimensional mixed quantum states using quantum information processors, we offer a significant advancement in mixed state preparation methodologies. To validate the efficacy of our algorithm, we conducted comprehensive tests utilizing both X and non-X mixed two-qubit states, as well as arbitrary random density matrices spanning one, two, and three qubits.

Abstract:Based on the logical labelling method, we prepare an effective pure state in a subsystem of a three spin system via liquid nuclear magnetic resonance technique. Then with this subspace effective pure state we implement the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm. The tomography for the subspace effective pure state and the corresponding spectrum of the output for the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm in a subsysytem of a nuclear spin system and demonstrated a subspace quantum computation.

Abstract:The important problem of how to prepare a quantum mechanical system, S, in a specific initial state of interest—e.g., for the purposes of some experiment—is addressed. Three distinct methods of state preparation are described. One of these methods has the attractive feature that it enables one to prepare S in a preassigned initial state with certainty, i.e., the probability of success in preparing S in a given state is unity. This method relies on coupling S to an open quantum-mechanical environment, E, in such a way that the dynamics of S∨E pulls the state of S towards an “attractor,” which is the desired initial state of S. This method is analyzed in detail.

Abstract:This paper addresses the challenge of preparing arbitrary mixed quantum states, an area that has not been extensively studied compared to pure states. Two circuit design methods are presented: one via a mixture of pure states and the other via purification. A novel strategy utilizing the Cholesky decomposition is proposed to improve both computational efficiency during preprocessing and circuit efficiency in the resulting circuits, offering significant advantages, especially when the targeted density matrix is low-ranked or sparse. By leveraging the incomplete Cholesky decomposition with threshold dropping, we also propose an appealing strategy for generating a high-fidelity approximation of the targeted density matrix, enabling substantial efficiency enhancement at the cost of mild fidelity loss. Additionally, as a closely related issue, we prove the "no-superposing theorem": given a certain number of arbitrary unknown pure states as input, it is impossible to devise an operation that produces an output state as the superposition of the input states with predefined coefficients unless all but one of the coefficients vanish.

Classical-Assisted Quantum Ground State Preparation with Tensor Network States and Monte Carlo Sampling

Abstract:Quantum computing offers potential solutions for finding ground states in condensed-matter physics and chemistry. However, achieving effective ground state preparation is also computationally hard for arbitrary Hamiltonians. It is necessary to propose certain assumptions to make this problem efficiently solvable, including preparing a trial state of a non-trivial overlap with the genuine ground state. Here, we propose a classical-assisted quantum ground state preparation method for quantum many-body systems, combining Tensor Network States (TNS) and Monte Carlo (MC) sampling as a heuristic method to prepare a trial state with a non-trivial overlap with the genuine ground state. We extract a sparse trial state by sampling from TNS, which can be efficiently prepared by a quantum algorithm on early fault-tolerant quantum computers. Our method demonstrates a polynomial improvement in scaling of overlap between the trial state and genuine ground state compared to random trial states, as evidenced by numerical tests on the spin-$1/2$ $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model. Furthermore, our method is a novel approach to hybridize a classical numerical method and a quantum algorithm and brings inspiration to ground state preparation in other fields.

Abstract:We investigate numerically the Multiple Quantum (MQ) NMR dynamics in systems of nuclear spins 1/2 coupled by the dipole-dipole interactions in the case of the pseudopure initial state. Simulations of the MQ NMR with the real molecular structures such as six dipolar-coupled proton spins of a benzene, hydroxyl proton chains in calcium hydroxyapatite and fluorine chains in calcium fluorapatite open the way to experimental NMR testing of the obtained results. It was found that multiple-spin correlations are created faster in such experiments than in the usual MQ NMR experiments and can be used for the investigation of many-spin dynamics of nuclear spins in solids

Abstract:One of the major components for realizing quantum computers is the ability to initialize the computer to a known fiducial state, also known as state preparation. We demonstrate a state preparation method via measurement-induced steering on contemporary, digital quantum computers. By delegating ancilla qubits and systems qubits, the system state is prepared by repeatedly performing the following steps: (1) executing a designated system-ancilla entangling circuit, (2) measuring the ancilla qubits, and (3) re-initializing ancilla qubits to known states through active reset. While the ancilla qubits are measured and reinitialized to known states, the system qubits are steered from arbitrary initial states to desired final states. We show results of the method by preparing arbitrary qubit states and qutrit (three-level) states. We also demonstrate that the state convergence can be accelerated by utilizing the readouts of the ancilla qubits to guide the protocol in an active manner. This protocol serves as a nontrivial example that incorporates and characterizes essential operations such as qubit reuse (qubit reset), entangling circuits, and measurement. These operations are not only vital for near-term noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) applications but are also crucial for realizing future error-correcting codes.
