Abstract:Insect antibacterial peptides were bioactive peptides, which played an important role in insect innate immunity.These peptides had the wide range of antibacterial,antiviral spectrum and inhibiting growth of tumor cell.The types of antibacterial peptides and its antibacterial activities,molecular design research were summarized.Its application on medicine and engineering was also promising.

Abstract:Antimicrobial peptides are a group of small molecular proteins with antibacterial activities, which are key components of animal and vegetation defense system and play an important role in protecting body from invasion of pathogens. These peptides have many characters such as low molecular weight, thermostability. And they have the wide range of antibacterial, antiviral spectrum and inhibiting growth of tumor cells. However, the development of antimicmbial peptides as antibiotic substitutes is far from easy. The recent warm spots about antimicrobial peptides, especially gene expression regulation and clinical application were reviewed.

Abstract:Antimicrobial peptides are important effectors of the innate immune system in insects,which have remained a hot research area of insect immunology in recent years.Silkworm is a good representative insect of the order Lepidoptera.Great progress has been achieved in researches of antimicrobial peptides in silkworm.From a local BLAST search of the silkworm genome database,40 antimicrobial peptide genes were identified.Although the peptides encoded by these genes have great differences in length,amino acid composition and property,they could be grouped into 3 categories:(1) linear peptides forming α-helices and without cysteine residue;(2) peptides rich in proline and/or glycine residues;and(3) cyclic peptides containing cysteine residues.This review presents recent advances of researches on silkworm antimicrobial peptides in lines of the above three categories.

Abstract:In this paper, a review on antimicrobial peptides, including the bioactivity, recombinant expression system and molecular transformation strategy, is provided. The main problems in the fields of antimicrobial peptides are put out,including low antibacterial activity, small productivity, and weak selectivity. It is considered that molecular structure modification is a valid strategy to enhance its antibacterial activity and selectivity. Optimization of recombinant expression system would be the key way to improve productivity. On one hand, the research and development on antibacterial peptides will strengthen the knowledge on the relationship between structure and function, including selectivity, antibacterial activity and toxicity, and the regulation strategies on gene expression system, both of which show significant scientific importance. On the other hand, antimicrobial peptides seldom shows drug resistance because of its antibacterial mechanism, and the research and development on antibacterial peptides will promote greatly its application in the fields of food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and feed industry, etc.

Abstract:Antimicrobial peptides(AMPs),a cluster of small peptides with antimicrobial activity,are produced by most living organisms against invading pathogens.AMPs are an important component of the innate immune system of organisms.These peptides exhibit broad-spectrum activity against a wide range of microorganisms including Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria,fungi,some enveloped viruses,and protozoa,a few peptides have also been found to be cytotoxic to tumour cells.AMPs have unique antibacterial mechanism distinctively from traditional antibiotics,which makes pathogens develop drug resistance to them hardly,and they have been demonstrated with the potential to be used as substitute for traditional antibiotics.In this review,we discussed the source and classification,physicochemical properties and biologic activities of AMPs,with the focus on the progress of their clinical applications.

Abstract:Antimicrobial peptides serve as the main components of innate immune system in various cellular life forms,possessing a broad range of biological activity against bacteria,virus and fungi.Antimicrobial peptides or their analogs mainly exert bactericidal or bacteriostatic mode of action on target cells by increasing membrane permeability,and have potential application as novel drugs and food biopreservatives.Synergy exists between different antimicrobial peptides or peptides and conventional antibiotics,which broaden the target-cell range of these peptides.

Abstract:Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), critical components of the innate immune system, are widely distributed throughout the animal and plant kingdoms. They can protect against a broad array of infection-causing agents, such as bacteria, fungi, parasites, viruses, and tumor cells, and also exhibit immunomodulatory activity. AMPs exert antimicrobial activities primarily through mechanisms involving membrane disruption, so they have a lower likelihood of inducing drug resistance. Extensive studies on the structure-activity relationship have revealed that net charge, hydrophobicity, and amphipathicity are the most important physicochemical and structural determinants endowing AMPs with antimicrobial potency and cell selectivity. This review summarizes the recent advances in AMPs development with respect to characteristics, structure-activity relationships, functions, antimicrobial mechanisms, expression regulation, and applications in food, medicine, and animals.

Abstract:Insects are one of the major sources of antimicrobial peptides/proteins (AMPs). Since observation of antimicrobial activity in the hemolymph of pupae from the giant silk moths Samia Cynthia and Hyalophora cecropia in 1974 and purification of first insect AMP (cecropin) from H. cecropia pupae in 1980, over 150 insect AMPs have been purified or identified. Most insect AMPs are small and cationic, and they show activities against bacteria and/or fungi, as well as some parasites and viruses. Insect AMPs can be classified into four families based on their structures or unique sequences: the α-helical peptides (cecropin and moricin), cysteine-rich peptides (insect defensin and drosomycin), proline-rich peptides (apidaecin, drosocin, and lebocin), and glycine-rich peptides/proteins (attacin and gloverin). Among insect AMPs, defensins, cecropins, proline-rich peptides, and attacins are common, while gloverins and moricins have been identified only in Lepidoptera. Most active AMPs are small peptides of 20–50 residues, which are generated from larger inactive precursor proteins or pro-proteins, but gloverins (~14 kDa) and attacins (~20 kDa) are large antimicrobial proteins. In this mini-review, we will discuss current knowledge and recent progress in several classes of insect AMPs, including insect defensins, cecropins, attacins, lebocins and other proline-rich peptides, gloverins, and moricins, with a focus on structural-functional relationships and their potential applications.

Abstract:Antimicrobial peptides are a type of small-molecule peptide that widely exist in nature and are components of the innate immunity of almost all living things. They play an important role in resisting foreign invading microorganisms. Antimicrobial peptides have a wide range of antibacterial activities against bacteria, fungi, viruses and other microorganisms. They are active against traditional antibiotic-resistant strains and do not easily induce the development of drug resistance. Therefore, they have become a hot spot of medical research and are expected to become a new substitute for fighting microbial infection and represent a new method for treating drug-resistant bacteria. This review briefly introduces the source and structural characteristics of antimicrobial peptides and describes those that have been used against common clinical microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses, and especially coronaviruses), focusing on their antimicrobial mechanism of action and clinical application prospects.

Abstract:Antimicrobial peptides of plant origins is a type of low molecular weight peptides that plants synthesize to defend against the invasion of environmental microbes and most of them are cationic peptides and has good thermal stability.According to their action sites and antimicrobial mechanisms,they can be classified into three types;the first type is capable of inhibiting microbes in growth by interfering with their cell-wall formation,the second type could damage microbes by acting on their plasma membrane to lead to its perforation and thus causing their cell substances to leak and the third type is capable of exerting inhibitory influence on microbes by inhibiting some of their organelles.The paper summarizes their research advances in action mechanism and classification.

Abstract:The innate immune response of insects provides a robust line of defense against pathogenic microbes and eukaryotic parasites. It consists of two types of overlapping immune responses, named humoral and cellular, which share protective molecules and regulatory mechanisms that closely coordinate to prevent the spread and replication of pathogens within the compromised insect hemocoel. The major feature of the humoral part of the insect immune system involves the production and secretion of antimicrobial peptides from the fat body, which is considered analogous to adipose tissue and liver in vertebrates. Previous research has identified and charac-terized the nature of antimicrobial peptides that are directed against various targets during the different stages of infection. Here we review this information focusing mostly on the diversity and mode of action of these host defense components, and their critical contribution to maintaining host homeostasis. Extending this knowledge is paramount for understanding the evolution of innate immune function and the physiological balance required to provide sufficient protection to the host against external enemies while avoiding overactivation signaling events that would severely undermine physiological stability.

Abstract:In recent years, great progresses have been made on the study of milk-derived bioactive peptides. These peptides were of great physical importance, and more and more attentions were attached to these peptides. So far, many kinds of these active peptides have been found. In recent years, most researches focus on antimicrobial peptides which can strengthen the resisting the microbial ability of organism and have a wide antibacterial spectrum. They could improve the antimicrobial function of human, especially to neonates. The further studies and the exploitation would be of great importance.
