Abstract:We report on a theoretical demonstration of optical bistability in periodic layered media, particularly in long-period GaAs-AlAs superlattices. The proposed structure consists of a periodic multilayer system, as opposed to previously demonstrated nonlinear bistable devices which employed Fabry-Perot etalons. The optical resonance effect which is essential for bistable devices is, in our case, induced by a refractive index modulation. The nonlinear active medium is distributed in the whole structure rather than placed between the two mirrors of a Fabry-Perot cavity. It is shown by a complete calculation of wave propagation in the periodic nonlinear medium that a multiple valued feature appears in the structure's nonlinear reflectivity spectrum. The input/output characteristics of the structure exhibit bistable hysteresis similar to that of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon. Both the reflection and the transmission modes are analyzed. The intensity threshold for bistability is shown to be as low as 9 kW/cm2 for a 30-period GaAs-AlAs superlattice of a thickness of about 4-mu-m. The characteristics of this type of device are discussed and compared to those based on Fabry-Perot etalons.

Abstract:Summary form only given. In recent years, more and more research attentions have been paid on periodically poled optical superlattice LiNbO/sub 3/ because of its outstanding nonlinear optical properties. The origin of the attractive characteristics is the periodic nonlinear coefficient caused by the periodic domain structure, thus the quasi-phase-matching technique can be used instead of the conventional phase matching. However, besides the nonlinear coefficient, other third-rank tensors including the electro-optic coefficient also change the sign periodically, which may result in some new properties. Such an idea is demonstrated.

Abstract:Optical bistability and hysteresis is observed experimentally with a nolinear two-dimensional (2D) periodic structure. The structure is a 2D volume index grating created in LiNbO3:Fe crystal through hologram recording and subsequent fixing techniques. No external feedback is provided. A strong intensity-dependent photovoltaic effect in LiNbO3:Fe material provides nonlinear coupling for the excited fields within the 2D periodic structure. Abstract:It is shown that, when two coherent waves are obliquely incident to a one-dimensional nonlinear optical superlattice containing Kerr-form dielectric nonlinearity, an incident-dependent two-dimensional nonlinear optical superlattice can be constructed. This structure can be bistable. There exist two types of optical bistable mechanism, i.e., the index-modulation mechanism and distributed feedback mechanism. Owing to the index-modulation mechanism, the threshold for the bistability is lower than that of a more traditional one-dimensional distributed feedback structure.

Abstract:The electro-optic effect of periodically poled optical superlattice LiNbO3 (PPLN) was studied. Because of the periodic electro-optic (EO) coefficient, the reciprocal vector of the periodic structure can be used to compensate for the phase mismatch between the ordinary and extraordinary waves, which is similar to the nonlinear optical frequency conversion process. If the quasi-phase-matching condition is satisfied, polarization of a light propagated in PPLN can rotate linearly with the applied electric field, which shows that PPLN may be used as a precise spectral filter or an EO switch.

Abstract:Dielectric superlattices show a lot of new phenomena that are promising in applications, such as nonlinear optical frequency conversion and optical bistability. This paper reviews the main achievements in this field. Much has been focused on the work done in our Lab. Since 1980, we have extended the concept of superlattice from semiconductor to dielectrics. When quasi-phase-matching technique is introduced into a quasiperiodic dielectric superlattice, more interesting phenomena can occur. For example, multiwavelength second-harmonic generation and coupled parametric processes such as direct third-harmonic generation have been realized with high efficiency. A new mechanism for optical bistability in a 2-dimensional dielectric superlattice, i.e. a 2-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal, has been proposed theoretically had proved experimentally.

Abstract:The electro-optic effect of aperiodically poled lithium niobate (APLN) has been theoretically investigated and proposed to use as a Q-switch in a simultaneous dual-wavelength laser. Our analysis shows that the polarization planes of the z-polarized (or y-polarized) dual-wavelength beams can be simultaneously rotated by 90° through a well-constructed APLN with an external electric field applied along the y-axis, which enables Q-switch function in a dual-wavelength laser cavity. Using a Nd:YVO4 laser operating at 1.0643μm and 1.3419μm as an example, we present a design method of APLN by using the so-called simulated annealing algorithm. The influence of the domain errors in fabricating an APLN device is also studied. The results show that the device is not susceptible to the fabrication errors.

Abstract:Based on our theoretical results of dynamical behaviors of light transmission in optical superlattices, we show that there is a new type of optical bistable mechanism, i.e., the index-modulation mechanism, existing in a two-dimensional superlattice that contains dielectric nonlinearity of the Kerr form. This bistable mechanism is not exhibited in one-dimensional superlattices.

Abstract:The optical bistability and multistability in one-dimensional photonic crystal with the periodic metal-dielectric structure is investigated theoretically. In linear transmission, a structure with N periods will support N−1 resonant modes which correspond to the transmission peaks. Strong localized effect in these resonant modes is obtained. Optical bistability and multistability can be achieved when the incident wavelength is close to a resonance, which can be seen as an effect of the dynamic shifting of the wavelength of the resonant modes. It is found that the threshold for optical bistability in the periodic resonant structure is lower than the nonresonant metal-dielectric structure.

Abstract:Ferroelectric crystals with periodic and quasi-periodic domain structures, such as LiNbO/sub 3/, LiTaO/sub 3/, Sr/sub 0.6/Ba/sub 0.4/Nb/sub 2/O/sub 6/ and KTiOPO/sub 4/ optical superlattice crystals, have attracted great interest because of their promising properties for quasi-phase-matched (QPM) frequency conversion. Periodic or quasi-periodic reversal of the crystal domains compensates for a mismatch between the propagation speeds of the pump light and generated light along a particular crystallographic direction. This allows phase matching to be achieved for the highest nonlinear coefficients in a particular material. Second harmonic generation (SHG), third harmonic generation (THG) and optical parametric generation (OPG) experiments performed with these superlattices have produced wavelengths throughout visible and infrared spectra with CW and nanosecond, picosecond, femtosecond pulse duration in high conversion efficiencies. To meet the needs of various applications, the design and fabrication of these superlattices become the one of the focus of the research.

Abstract:By introducing the change of beam behavior near the frequency sensitive self-collimation point, a new kind of bistability is observed in a finite nonlinear photonic crystal (PhC). The mechanism of such a PhC bistability is from the complex interplay between cavity resonance, nonlinearity and beam behavior. Additionally, it has unique properties, including: high frequency sensitivity, small volume, short switching time, robustness and position flexibility. With the consideration of beam behavior, a new theory based on the coupled-mode equation has been constructed, whose result agrees with the numerical one very well. The new PhC bistability could be widely used to design various optical devices, as a bistable all-optical switch has also been demonstrated.
Cascaded frequency conversion of orbital angular momentum states in periodically poled LiTaO3 crystal

Abstract:We report that the optical orbital angular momentum (OAM) is conserved in the two-step cascaded nonlinear processes through quasi-phase-matched (QPM) in a dual-structure periodically poled LiTaO!(PPLT) crystal. Because of the different reciprocal vectors provided by the different structures in the crystal, collinear second harmonic (SH) beam with an OAM of l2 and third harmonic (TH) beam with an OAM of l3 are simultaneously generated by the input fundamental beam with an OAM of l1. The OAM conversion law (l2 = 2l1, l3 = 3l1) holds well in this nonlinear process. Our results provide an effective way to obtain three beams (fundamental beam, SH beam, TH beam) with different OAMs at the same time, which can be used to enhance the capacity of optical communication.

Abstract:Quasi-phase-matched parametric downconversion via cascaded optical nonlinearities in an aperiodically poled MgO:LiNbO3 superlattice was studied in theory and experiment. Due to the cascading effect and the abundant reciprocal structure in an aperiodic optical superlattice, multiple-wavelength parametric downconversion in a wide spectrum range can be obtained. Enhancement of the conversion efficiency and output stability through coupling of two nonlinear processes is demonstrated. The result also reveals that the cascaded parametric downconversion process can be used to efficiently downconvert the fundamental wavelength to a longer wavelength of the infrared region. The process can be additionally served as an efficient mechanism to enhance THz wave propagation in a nonlinear optical medium. (C) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:We report nonlinear properties of lithium niobate based periodic nano-antenna array. The resonances of this nano-antenna array can be engineered by tuning the geometrical parameters. The nonlinear effect gets enhanced when the electric and magnetic resonances overlap.

Abstract:We proposed the coupling and competition of second harmonic generation (SHG) and acousto-optic (AO) interaction in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN). The reciprocal vector of PPLN compensates the SHG wave-vector mismatch when quasi-phase-matching (QPM) condition is satisfied, while phonons with suitable frequencies may affect it by scattering photons to different polarization state. Second harmonic waves' intensities, polarization states and even phases thus could be manipulated instantly through AO interaction.

Abstract:A theoretical study of optical wave propagation in a two-dimensional optical superlattice with Kerr-type nonlinearity is performed. For proper ratio of index modulation strengths of the periodic medium, a stop gap in the linear frequency spectra is found in the vicinity of Bragg angle incidence of the structure. The location of the stop gap and its width depends sensitively on the input power. The nonlinear system is shown to possess a bistable switching between states in pass band and states in stop gap. This bistability is based on the nonlinear mechanism on the stop gap.
