Abstract:An optical distortion-invariant image recognition method based on the multivariate statistical analysis was presented. A set of eigen images is first extracted from a large number of training images including various distortions by using the principal component analysis and then are used as the reference patterns to be optical correlated with the testing input image. The optically correlation results between the input image and the set of eigen images construct a feature space, on which the discriminant analysis is performed during the training and classification process. Then the distortion invariant recognition to the input image can be implemented quickly. The optical experimental results implemented on an incoherent optical correlator were given.

In this approach, a set of eigenimages are first extracted from a large number of training images including various typical distortions by using the principal component analysis and then are used as the reference patterns in the correlator. The optical correlation results between the testing image and the set of eigenimges construct a feature space, on which the multivariate discriminant analysis is performed. During both the training and the classification process, a bifurcating tree structure is used, by which the recognition speed of the system can be greatly improved.
Eigenface-Based Method for Distortion-Invariant Human Face Recognition

Abstract:In this paper, the K-L expansion for feature extraction has been combined with an incoherent optical correlator, which was previously constructed for human face recognition. In this new approach, the eigenfaces are used as the image filters in the reference plane of the correlator. Since the face images can be approximated by different linear combinations of a relatively few eigenfaces, they can be efficiently distinguished from one another by a small set of the weight coefficients, which is derived by projecting the input image onto every eigenface. The optical correlator is used as the feature extractor and the optical correlation results between the input image and the eigenfaces are used as the features. As a result, the recognition features can be got at a relatively high speed. Because the face images in the training set are selected to representing some typical distortions, the system can deal with the distortions to a large extent.

Abstract:In this paper, we combined the multivariate discriminant analysis into an optical correlator and thus improved the distortion-invariant recognition ability of the processor. In this approach, a set of eigenimages are first extracted from a large number of training images including various distortions by using the K-L transform and then are used as the reference images in the optical correlator. The correlation results between the testing image and the set of eigenimages construct a feature space, on which the multivariate discriminant analysis is performed. As a result, a set of low dimensional discriminant vectors representing each image in the training set will be obtained and saved in memory during the training process. When any testing image with unknown membership inputs, it will be processed with the same operations and gets its discriminant vector. Using the simple minimal distance rule, the testing image can be classified into a group whose discriminant vector approximates that of the testing image most. Because the images in the training set are selected to representing all the typical distortions in each group, the algorithm can deal with the distortions to a large extent.

Abstract:Different eigenspace-based approaches have been proposed for the recognition of faces, i.e. eigenface, fisherface and Laplacianface. For fisherfaces, the original image space is reduced to an n-c dimensional subspace in which the standard LDA is carried out, where n is the number of training samples and c is the number of classes. In this paper, we present a spectral analysis of fisherface which shows that the initial PCA dimensionality reduction might be insufficient. The noise might not be completely eliminated. This is due to the fact that fisherface only takes into account the discriminating structure while ignores geometrical structure. Based on the theoretical analysis, we propose a new method, called enhanced fisherface, which takes into account the discriminating structure as well as the intrinsic geometrical structure. Experimental results show that the proposed approach is effective in improving the performance of face recognition.

Abstract:Since optical distortion has been a big trouble for various kinds of imaging systems, finding a simple correction method with wide applications is of significant importance. In this paper, we propose a unified and simple correction method, performing well for both photographic and projective imaging systems. The basic idea is regarding the optical distortion as geometrical deformation between the object and image, without considering the specific features of an optical system. First of all, a calibration template is employed to establish the geometrical transformation model (GTM) for the distortion of a built optical system. Two alternative algorithms are given to estimate the GTM in algebraic form. The computation is very simple because no intrinsic parameters of the optical system are needed to establish the GTM. Besides, the errors introduced by the fabricating and assembling process can be eliminated. Then, the corrected image of the photographic system or the pre-distorted image of the projective systems can be obtained accordingly utilizing the GTM. Experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of our method with wide applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe a human face recognition system, which is based on an incoherent optical correlator. A liquid crystal display (LCD) panel is used as the real-time spatial,light modulators (SLMs). A set of eigenfaces, which was extracted from 200 training images, is used as image filters in the reference plane of the correlator. Since the face images can be approximated by different linear combinations of a relatively few eigenfaces corresponding to large eigenvalues, they can be efficiently distinguished from one another by a small set of the weight coefficients (a feature vector), which is derived by projecting, the input image onto every selected eigenface. Recognition can be performed by a simple minimum distance decision rule. We use the optical correlator as the feature. extractor and the optical correlation results between the input image and the eigenfaces as the features. By using the optical correlation operation instead of the projection operation, much more features can be got parallelly. By using the eigenfaces as image filters instead of the original images in the training set, the numbers of optical correlation operation, can be greatly reduced compared to the original numbers of the training set.

Abstract:An optimal incoherent filter is proposed for distortion-invariant correlation. The optical transfer function (OTF) of the correlator is specified as a realizable phase-only term which is optimized by the simulated annealing algorithm. The phase-only OTF is used in image recognition to produce a sharp peak response and can be generated by dual-filter synthesis. Image recognition is achieved by subtracting two spatially incoherent correlation outputs produced from a positive and negative filters with an input image. Computer simulations show that the proposed correlator can yield a sharp correlation peak with excellent distortion tolerance.

Abstract:The multi-value hit-or-miss transformation (MVHMT) was introduced here into a joint transform correlator (JTC) for binary image recognition, which can improve the ability of ordinary morphological hit-or-miss transformation (HMT) because it reduces the effect of the pixels that are easily disturbed by rotation and scaling distortion on the differentiation. The MVHMT not only can realize the precise recognition between two images because no information of the input images is lost, but also has a better distortion-invariant ability to scaling and rotation than the ordinary HMT. The MVHMT was realized here on a JTC in one step by using a novel multivalue complementary encoding method, and with a high-level thresholding value, correct justification could be achieved from the correlated resultant image. Simulation results were given here also.

Abstract:In this paper, we incorporate the theory of the multidimensional discriminant analysis into a photorefractive correlator architecture. In this approach, a set of eigenimages extracted from a large number of training images by K-L transform are stored in a photorefractive crystal by using the two-wave mixing volume holographic storage technique and used as the reference images in the photorefractive correlator. When any new image inputs the correlator, angularly separated beams with different light intensities are obtained simultaneously. They represent the optical correlation results between the input and the set of eigenimages and can be regarded as eigen features. Then the multidimensional discriminant analysis will be applied to these features for training and classification. During both processes, a bifurcating tree structure is used, by which the recognition speed of the system can be greatly improved. This approach takes the advantages of both the high degree of parallelism of the photorefractive correlator and the optimal discriminating ability of the multivariate statistical methods for classification.

Abstract:Based on the theory of synthetic discriminant function, several subreference images are synthesized to realize distortion-invariant recognition. Using a phase-encoding technique and amplitude modulation on a joint power spectrum, the proposed joint transform correlator greatly reduces the intensity and width of the strong dc component, sharpens the correlation peak, and eliminates cross-correlations between each input target and the conjugate cross-correlation between the reference and input targets, which exist in the classical joint transform correlator. All these achievements are accomplished in only one step. At the end, a computer simulation is given, which proves the efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract:A Novel method is proposed for realizing optical Walsh transformation to extract the most important features in images. The important features can be used in optical image matching of large capacity image library. Based on a hybrid opto-electrical image processing system with an incoherent correlator, the image matching algorithm using optical Walsh transformation is realized successfully.

Abstract:Infrared small target detection is one of the most important parts of infrared search and tracking (IRST) system. Generally, the small and dim target is of low signal-to-noise ratio and buried in the complicated background and heavy noise, which makes it extremely difficult to be detected with low false alarm rates. To solve this problem, we propose a small target detection method based on multiscale local contrast measure. Different from conventional methods, we novelly measure the local contrast from two aspects: local dissimilarity and local brightness difference. First, we present a new dissimilarity measure called the local energy factor (LEF) to describe the dissimilarity between the small targets and their surrounding backgrounds. Second, the feature of the brightness difference between the small targets and the backgrounds is utilized. Afterward, the local contrast is measured by taking both features of the above into account. Finally, an adaptive segmentation method is applied to extract the small targets from the backgrounds. Extensive experiments on real test data set demonstrate that our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches.
Optical Image Recognition Using Volume Holographic Storage Based Photorefractive Correlator

Abstract:The discriminating ability of the conventional photorefractive correlator is not very satisfactory because the light intensity difference between the correlation beams is not always distinct enough for evaluation. In this paper, we apply the statistical pattern recognition method to the photorefractive correlator to overcome this difficulty. The difference between the method of this paper and the conventional method is that the reference images used to correlate with the input image to be recognized are not the database images, but the eigenimages extracted from the set of training dataset. Since all the crosscorrelation results can be collected to form a feature vector for recognition, this method avoid the difficulty mentioned above. In addition, since the number of the eigenimages is much less than the training images, the processing speed can be greatly improved. Furthermore, because the images in the training dataset can be selected to representing some typical distortions, the processor can deal with the distortions to a large extent.

Abstract:Optimal incoherent filters are proposed for distortion- invariant and noise-tolerance correlation. The optical transfer function (OTF) of the correlator is specified as a realizable phase-only term which is modified by a passband function. The phase-only term is optimized by the simulated annealing for producing a sharp and distortion-invariant correlation peak, and the passband function is selected by a direct iterative search algorithm to achieve the noise- tolerant image recognition. The designed OTF is generated by dual-filter synthesis. The correlation output is obtained from the subtraction between the correlation of two realizable filters with the input image. Optical experiments and computer simulations show that the proposed correlator can yield a sharp correlation peak with excellent distortion robustness and noise tolerance.

Abstract:In response to the issues of relatively low image contrast, blurry boundaries of infrared small targets, and various environmental noise interferences in thermal imaging systems, resulting in reduced target recognition rates and tracking effectiveness. This paper proposes an infrared target image recognition algorithm based on fuzzy comprehensive assessment. Built upon infrared image sequences captured by an on-board thermal imager, the algorithm employs grayscale processing, neighborhood mean filtering, and second-order difference method to filter and enhance the infrared target images. This process improves the quality of infrared target images and enhances the contrast between targets and backgrounds. The algorithm utilizes the maximum interclass variance method for segmenting the infrared target images, combining it with the Canny operator to extract target edges, thereby obtaining clearer details of the infrared target edges. Finally, based on the extracted target feature information, the algorithm calculates the confidence of each marked region, establishes the membership function of target likelihood, employs a comprehensive weighted approach to construct the target confidence function, and compares the confidence of marked regions with that of the template image to achieve precise target recognition. Experimental validation against theoretical methods and comparisons with other approaches demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method, providing theoretical support for reliable target tracking in electro-optical imaging systems.

Abstract:The wavelet and harmonic filtering method suggested by Zalevsky and Ouzieli is introduced in this paper and adopted in our volume holographic image recognition system. This composite filter combines several scaled versions of the cascaded wavelet and harmonic filter, obtaining high discrimination ability and wide dynamic range of rotation and scale deformations. Optical experiments are conducted to demonstrate the validity and practicability of the algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of using this algorithm in a volume holographic system. Moreover, the separate correlation approach proposed in this paper greatly simplifies the manufacturing process and reduces the cost of the system.

Abstract:The technology of visual object tracking based on correlation filter has good accuracy and efficiency. However, it is still necessary to be study further on the appearance model of the target, the scale variation of the target and so on. This paper proposes a tracking algorithm based on discriminative correlation filtering and a hybrid color feature. The hybrid color feature is composed of two parts, which are compressed color name features and Histogram of Oriented Gradient features based on opponent color space. These two parts features above are extracted from the target patch, respectively. For the first part, color-name features are extracted from a target patch firstly, and then block-based compressed color-name features are extracted according to these color-name features. For the second part, opponent color features are extracted from the target patch firstly, and then HOG features are extracted from these opponent color features. At the basis of the hybrid color feature, two different discriminative correlation filters are used to estimate the translation and the scale of the target, respectively. Finally, extensive experiments show that the tracking algorithm with the hybrid color features of this paper outperforming several state-of-the-art tracking algorithms.
