Abstract:A tuned mass damper(TMD) was designed in the vibration control for an articulated tower platform.The motion equation of the system was firstly given with considering gravity,water pressure difference and wave force,and this equation was discreted using the finite difference method.Then active controller was designed using the optimal control method.The determination of parameters of TMD was also given in this paper.Simulation results indicate that the control effectiveness using active TMD control is better than that using passive TMD control,and the displacement of the TMD using active TMD control is smaller than that using passive TMD control.

Abstract:Steel large-megawatts wind turbines have the light-damping and long-period properties, resulting in the adverse vibrations under the wind loads. In this paper, a novel tuned mass damper refitted via inner platform (IP-TMD) is proposed to control the excessive vibration of steel wind turbine tower (WTT). Firstly, the dynamic equation of steel WTT controlled by the IP-TMD system is established according to the principle of virtual work, and its dynamic coefficient and frequency ratio at corresponding fixed points are deduced. Then, the optimal frequency ratio and optimal stiffness and damping coefficients are obtained by the system optimization. Furthermore, a numerical simulation research is employed to analyze the frequency-response curves and resonance mitigation effect of IP-TMD under harmonic excitation. Finally, the vibration control efficiency of IP-TMD is calculated using the Wilson-θ method under the wind loadings; the results indicated that IP-TMD is able to reduce the dynamic response of steel WTT over 45% compared with the uncontrolled WTT cases.

Abstract:To research the effectiveness of passive control device on tower vibration control,a tunnel test model with suspended mass pendulums was proposed.Based on the mechanism and equation of wind vibration control,wind-induced vibration control for transmission tower model with suspended mass pendulums was performed by using a full aeroelastic model test.The time history of fluctuating wind velocities was simulated by using trigonometric series and adapting Simiu power spectrum.According to quasi-steady theory,the along-wind acceleration time history and root of mean square(RMS) with or without suspended mass pendulums control were calculated in the time domain,and the optimal design parameters of suspended mass pendulums were also determined.The results show that the acceleration RMS of tower tip obtained by simulated wind load agrees well with the experiment data,and the proposed model is very effective in mitigating tower vibration.

Abstract:To address the issue of excessive static stretching in tuned mass damper (TMD) used for vertical vibration control of low-frequency structures, a novel tuned liquid mass damper (TLMD) is proposed in the present study, and corresponding theoretical analysis and experimental investigation are carried out. The proposed TLMD consists of a mass-spring oscillator and a tank filled with liquid, with the mass submerged in the liquid. The added mass generated from fluid-solid coupling is utilized to achieve an inerter-like effect. Based on the characteristics and configuration of the device, the analytical model of the TLMD is proposed, and the dynamic parameters of the oscillation system are derived. Three TLMDs with different spring stiffness are designed and manufactured. The frequency reduction effect of the added mass and the feasibility of the proposed analytical model have been validated by free decay tests and forced vibration tests. Finally, the proposed TLMD has been implemented for the first time to the low-frequency vertical vortexinduced vibration control of a large-span cable-stayed bridge, and its effectiveness has been verified through a steady-state excitation test based on a self-developed large-scale bridge exciter. The field test results indicate that after the installation of the TLMDs, the steady-state velocity amplitude of the bridge decreases from 19.9 mm/s to 13.2 mm/s, and the damping ratio increases from 0.198 % to 0.842 %.

Abstract:The control of wind-induced vibration of the TV tower mast on Shenzhen Wutong Mountain is selected as an example in this paper.The dynamical characteristics of the wind are analyzed and the method of simulation of fluctuating wind load is proposed.It applies the control method of TMD(linear absorbing-vibration and nonlinear consuming-energy Wind-induced response) to analysis of the TV tower through optimal distribution of the position and the inertial mass effect of the TMD and design the control device.The tower or mast structure is simplified and analyzed based on the vibration mode resolving method and the time history analysis under the fluctuating wind load.These provide theoretical basis for TMD used in suppressing seismic response of high-rise structure.

Abstract:Because the commonly-used tuned-mass-damper(TMD) is ineffective in controlling the pendulum vibration of a suspended structure,we explore,by numerical analysis and practical experiments,the swing-motion control of such structures by using an innovative tuned-rotary-inertia-damper(TRID).First,by the non-linear differential equations and the simplified analytical model,we determine the interaction effects between the TRID system and the suspended structure.These effects are studied through Simulink and ADAMS dynamical codes,and the results are summarized and systematically analyzed.Optimal key-parameters of the TRID,such as the inertia ratio,the tuning ratio and the damping ratio,etc.,are determined for controlling the swing-motion of structures.The effectiveness and feasibility of TRID control system are further validated by the bench-scale-shaking-table-tests.

Abstract:Recently, enhancing conventional tuned mass dampers (TMDs) with a pounding damping mechanism is demonstrated to be an efficient way for vibration control of flexible structures. In this paper, a double-tuned pendulum mass damper employing a pounding damping mechanism (DTPMD-PD) is proposed. DTPMD-PD dissipates energy through the collision between distributed balls with a smaller mass and viscoelastic (VE) boundary, which can effectively reduce noise during operation compared to conventional impact dampers. Moreover, DTPMD-PD utilizes a double-tuning mechanism, and its control performance is significantly enhanced. The motion equations of a multiple degree of freedom (MDOF) structure equipped with DTPMD-PD are formulated. Based on the H∞ optimization criterion, a numerical optimization is performed to obtain the optimal design parameters of DTPMD-PD. Additionally, the pounding dissipation capacity and the parametric identification of the impact force model are investigated through free pounding experiments, and the control performance and robustness of DTPMD-PD are experimentally studied in the laboratory. The results show that the proposed numerical modeling method has considerable accuracy through experimental verifications. The restitution coefficient of the pounding layer has a significant influence on the performance of proposed DTPMD-PD. Optimized DTPMD-PD has better effectiveness than conventional TMDs under harmonic and seismic loads.

Study on control of wind induced vibration of Changzhou E120 Theme Park Landscape Tower with MTMD

Abstract:Multiple tuned mass dampers were used to control wind induced vibration of a landscape tower,through the analysis of the parameter to study the general law of control result with parameter changes,and provide analysis method for similar projects which control wind induced vibration with MTMD.At first,considering both time and spatial correlation,stochastic fluctuating wind speed processes were generated by the autoregressive-type simulation method.The finite element analysis model was established with the program of SPA2000 and the wind induced vibration was calculated,the numerical results agree well with the wind tunnel test.Then considering the first model shape of the structure,the analysis parameters of the MTMD were determined and the analysis model of the MTMD was established,and then the wind induced vibration of the structure under the control of the MTMD was calculated,the results show that the damping effect is obvious if the structure with MTMD.At last the relationship between the vibration reduction ratio of the structure with MTMD and mass ratio,TMD's quantity,damping ratio and frequency width is studied.Numerical results indicate that the MTMD exist the optimum parameter values,in which the mass ratio,damping ratio and frequency width have a consistent damping effect on the displacement and acceleration,and the acceleration of the vibration damping effect is obvious.

Abstract:In this study, shaking table tests were performed on a 1/8-scaled test model equipped with and without a tuned mass damper (TMD) to validate the effectiveness of TMD on a transmission tower under seismic excitations and to investigate its damping mechanism. Based on the experimental results, the vibration control performance of TMD and the effects of earthquake characteristics were analysed. The results showed that TMD had efficient control effects on the transmission tower responses, but the control performance varied. Moreover, the vibration control performance was related to the earthquake types and decreased with the increase in excitation intensity. The vibration control performance along the height was also analysed comprehensively. Finally, the dynamic responses of the transmission tower model with TMD were simulated using the finite element software, ANSYS, which agreed well with the shaking table test results. Based on the finite element model, the effect of the damping ratio of TMD on the vibration control performance was determined through a parametric study, indicating that adding the damping ratio can improve the vibration control performance within a specific range. The experimental results and the numerical simulation method reported in this paper are applicable in transformation towers located in active seismic areas.

Abstract:It is effective for tuned mass damper(TMD) to reduce vibration response of high buildings under wind excitation,but the displacement of the TMD sub-structure is too much bigger.So it is necessary to design parameters for limit position of TMD in applications.Firstly,the dynamic characteristic of an analysis model,Guangzhou new TV tower that will be one of the highest tower in the world,was introduced.The system equilibrium equations of the two limit cases,on-off damper limit position and OE(off-equilibrium)-damper limit position control strategies,were deduced.Under fluctuating wind excitations the simulations were done.The results showed that the limit position distance is the key point to decide OE or on-off damper control method,which is more effective to control different objectives.When the position distance was about 36% of the classical TMD displacement response,the TMD's displacement response with limit position could be reduced about 45% with only 4% control effect loss.And it is more effective for OE-damper limit postion strategy to control the main structure acceleration peak response.So it was significant to choose right limit distance and damping parameter for designing limit position according to different demands.

Abstract:The airport control tower has been widely constructed for rapidly expanding transportation demand, whose anti-wind performance and high-efficiency upgrading technology are attracting increasing attention. To provide an efficient liquid-incorporated solution for wind-induced vibration control of airport control towers, this study proposes a novel triple friction pendulum tuned liquid damper (TFPTLD) and establishes a control demand-oriented design framework to facilitate the design of TFPTLDs. The configuration and theoretical analysis model of the TFPTLD are introduced, based on which the TFPTLD-equipped tower-like structure is established. Stochastic response analysis is performed to obtain the responses under stochastic wind and white noise. Correspondingly, extensive parametric research is conducted to explore the optimal parameters and clarify the vibration control demand-oriented design procedure and easy-to-use fitted design formula for the TFPTLD. Furthermore, a robustness investigation is undertaken to quantify the advantages and sensitivity of the TFPTLD to the stiffness and damping components. Finally, the TFPTLD is applied to an airport tower subject to experimental wind loads to illustrate the effectiveness of the devices and proposed design method. The results show that the proposed TFPTLD yields a compact solution to the high-level performance upgrading of the airport control tower subjected to wind excitations, which significantly reduces the structural acceleration and displacement responses. Following the proposed demand-oriented design method, the TFPTLD exhibits higher effectiveness, larger frequency bandwidth, and more robust wind-induced vibration control than conventional TLDs with the same liquid mass. Benefitting from the triple friction pendulum, a small installation space is required, and the tuning effect of the liquid mass is independent of the change in liquid mass, which can be comprehensively utilized for vibration control to maintain the daily function of liquid tanks.

Abstract:Wind loads can cause significant vibrations in circular section members, resulting in serious structural hazards. In order to control the vibration of the structure and mitigate the hazards, this study investigates the optimal design and carries out a performance evaluation of a tuned mass damper inerter (TMDI) designed for the vibration control of circular section members in structures. The TMDI system is a novel vibration reduction device that utilizes an inerter based on a tuned mass damper (TMD). The main structure is a simplified Euler beam made up of circular section members, and the mass of the TMDI is coupled to the main structure by a spring and damper, as well as to the ground via an inerter. The optimization objectives are to minimize the displacement variance and maximize the energy dissipation index (EDI), and two different optimization schemes are designed. In addition to the comparative analysis of the results obtained from the different optimization schemes, a sensitivity analysis of the design parameters is also performed, and the results show that TMDI not only effectively reduces the additional mass but also has better vibration control performance and robustness than the TMD.

Abstract:Large capacity wind turbine towers with low natural frequency and low damping are subjected to resonance from wind action in its environment; thus, tuned mass dampers (TMD) are usually utilized to mitigate excessive vibrations. A novel prestressed tuned mass damper (PS-TMD) has been proposed by authors in previous work, and its vibration suppression performance has been verified under linear condition by simulations and tests. Since the pendulum and bottom cable of the PS-TMD are flexible, the additional deformation induced by these flexible cables will trigger nonlinear stiffness effect. To achieve the more accurate parameters design and optimal vibration control, the nonlinearities in the PS-TMD from the flexible cable deformation are explored in this paper. The mathematical model of the WTT with the nonlinear PS-TMD system is derived. The dynamic coefficient is obtained with the harmonic balance method, and different influential parameters affecting the performances of the WTT are discussed. Numerical simulation on vibration suppression of the WTT under both harmonic and wind excitations shows that the nonlinear PS-TMD is capable of providing smooth and excellent vibration suppression over a wide frequency range than the WTT with linear PS-TMD.

A Toroidal Tuned Liquid Column Damper for Multidirectional Ground Motion‐induced Vibration Control

Abstract:In this study, a toroidal tuned liquid column damper (TTLCD), which is composed of outer shell, inner shell, and L-shaped baffles, is creatively proposed to control multidirectional vibration of structures. With a toroidal shape, the proposed TTLCD can act as several equivalent TLCDs in arbitrary directions due to its axial symmetry. First, the configuration of the TTLCD is illustrated in detail. Second, the equations of motion are developed for the TTLCD based on the Lagrange dynamic equations, and thus the natural frequency may be directly calculated based on the effective length. Finally, shaking table tests are performed for a single-degree-of-freedom (single-DOF) shear frame and a three-DOF frame in different excitation directions with the proposed TTLCD and conventional TLCD, respectively. The test results indicate that the proposed TTLCD may effectively dampen the vibration in any given direction and simultaneously suppress multidirectional vibration of multiple-DOF structure, whereas the control efficiency of conventional TLCD shows clear difference in its main control direction and other directions.
Principles and Applications of Structural Pendular Vibration Control

Abstract:Aimed at the pendular vibration control problem of the suspended structure, this paper discusses the non-linear differential equation model development and control analysis of the system. Based on the classical Lagrangian principle, the system EOM can be established into two sub-types corresponding to in-plain motion mode and rotary motion mode. The analytical results indicate that different control systems should be considered owing to the diverse motions of the system. Then, theoretical results show that the Tuned Mass Damper (abbreviated as TMD) can not be used for rotary motion control owing to the coupling effect between displacement of TMD mass and structural pendulation angular velocity. Based on thorough numerical analysis, the concept of Tuned Rotary Inertia Damper (abbreviated as TRID) control system is proposed, and the differential equation of the suspended mass with the TRID system is studied. Furthermore, optimization issues of TRID system are equivalent to the classical optimization problem of TMD control. At last, conclusions were extended to vibration control of typical civil engineering structures, such as high-rising tower structure with prior bending deformation characteristics. Whenever its motion or vibration is similar to the single pendulum or inverted pendulum, the in-plain TMD control system will lose its effectiveness and the innovative TRID system should be considered for pendular vibration control of such kind of structures.

Abstract:To better suppress the structural vibration in the micro vibration and harsh environment, a new type of damper, tuned particle damper (TPD), was designed by combining the advantage of classical dynamic vibration absorber (DVA) and particle damper (PD). An equivalent theoretical model was established to describe the dynamic behavior of a cantilever system treated with TPD. By means of a series of sine sweep tests, the dynamic characteristic of TPD under different excitation intensity was explored and the damping performance of TPD was investigated by comparing with classical DVA and PD with the same mass ratio. Experimental results show that with the increasing of excitation intensity TPD shows two different dynamic characteristics successively, i.e., PD-like and DVA-like. TPD shows a wider suppression frequency band than classical DVA and better practicability than PD in the micro vibration environment. Moreover, to characterize the dynamic characteristic of TPD, a simple evaluation of the equivalent dynamic mass and equivalent dynamic damping of the cantilever system treated with TPD was performed by fitting the experimental data to the presented theoretical model. Finally, based on the rheology behaviors of damping particles reported by the previous research results, an approximate phase diagram which shows the motion states of damping particles in TPD was employed to analyze the dynamic characteristic of TPD and several motion states of damping particles in TPD were presented via a high-speed camera. Optimal Design of Tuned Mass Dampers With Variable Inerter and Damping

Abstract:Abstract Conventional tuned mass damper (TMD) is a popular and generally accepted vibration control device in the field of passive structural control. However, it was found that the control efficacy of a conventional TMD may significantly degrade when the TMD’s frequency does not tune to its desired value. In addition, the vibration energy of controlled structure transferred into the TMD is dissipated by viscous or friction damper and becomes waste heat. In this paper, a new type of TMD, called electromagnetic TMD inerter (EM-TMDI) is developed by replacing the viscous dampers with electromagnetic rotary transducers so that a more flexible viscous damping can be achieved and part of the energy originally dissipated by the dampers could be harvested. A flywheel with variable mass moment of inertia will be introduced into the transmission system of the TMD to adjust TMD’s frequency to mitigate the frequency detuning effect and to enhance the control efficacy of TMD system. The theoretical derivation is performed to generate the relationship between the DC motor and the transmission system of the EM-TMDI. Optimal design method considering the inerter of rotary transducers will be developed. This study first designed and manufactured a scale-down, double-deck EM-TMDI. A series of shaking table tests were conducted at NCREE Tainan laboratory to verify the capability of inerter to change TMD’s frequency.

Abstract:With the rapid development of large megawatt wind turbines, the operation environment of wind turbine towers (WTTs) has become increasingly complex. In particular, seismic excitation can create a resonance response and cause excessive vibration of the WTT. To investigate the vibration attenuation performance of the WTT under seismic excitations, a novel passive vibration control device, called a prestressed tuned mass damper (PS-TMD), is presented in this study. First, a mathematical model is established based on structural dynamics under seismic excitation. Then, the mathematical analytical expression of the dynamic coefficient is deduced, and the parameter design method is obtained by system tuning optimization. Next, based on a theoretical analysis and parameter design, the numerical results showed that the PS-TMD was able to effectively mitigate the resonance under the harmonic basal acceleration. Finally, the time-history analysis method is used to verify the effectiveness of the traditional pendulum tuned mass damper (PTMD) and the novel PS-TMD device, and the results indicate that the vibration attenuation performance of the PS-TMD is better than the PTMD. In addition, the PS-TMD avoids the nonlinear effect due to the large oscillation angle, and has the potential to dissipate hysteretic energy under seismic excitation.

Abstract:This paper presents the design, modeling, and characterizing tests of an assembled freely pendulum-type active tuned mass damper (AP-ATMD) for structural vibration control, highlighting its unique features such as noncontact force transmission, nonextra stiffness, and damping members. This device can operate passively as a tuned mass damper (TMD) with optimal tuning when environmental disturbances are minimal, or it can engage efficiently in active control when significant disturbances are present. The AP-ATMD mainly consists of a robust suspension system, an arc-shaped mass block with permanent magnets (PMs), and an arc-shaped electromagnetic motor. Notably, both the electromagnetic motor and the mass block have identical curvatures. A laboratory prototype of the AP-ATMD was designed and fabricated for the purpose of characterizing tests. Furthermore, an electromechanical model based on the Bouc-Wen hysteresis loop was developed to accurately characterize the active force behavior generated by the device. The parameters of this model were identified through a series of characterizing tests of the prototype AP-ATMD under harmonic excitations, and subsequently were validated under random excitation. The results confirmed the efficacy of the proposed electromechanical model in precisely capturing the active force behavior across a wide array of operational conditions. Finally, a numerical simulation of a 3-story frame with the AP-ATMD installed was conducted. The outcomes of the simulation highlighted the AP-ATMD's ability to reduce structural responses significantly. Moreover, the system employing the proposed electromechanical model outperformed a linear model, demonstrating a superior reduction in structural response.

Abstract:The concept of virtual tuning damper (VTD) stemming from tuning mass damper (TMD) was introduced. The mathematical model of VTD was deduced based on the basis principle of TMD. The parameters of VTD were designed by deciding the placement of poles and zeros, which was explained by an example. The influence of non-pure modal measurement on VTDk and the modal control spillover were analyzed. The method regarding optimal placement for VTDk was presented. The application of multi-VTD was studied. VTD can be designed by use of commercial control design software. The realization of VTD is more flexible than MTD. It is easy to control the wide-band vibration by use of multi-VTD.
