Abstract:Simultaneous two-species imaging using single-shot planar laser-induced fluorescence have been performed to record high quality image pairs of CH/OH, CH/CH2O and OH/CH2O to visualize the flame front structures in swirl-stabilized lean premixed methane/air flames. The results show that the investigated flames exhibit various flame front structures distinctly in space, which covers: (1) the corrugated flamelet at the leading front; (2) the thin reaction-zone layer with distorted preheat zone in the shear-layer downstream; and (3) quenching, re-ignition and distributed reactions further downstream. The large variation of the flame characteristics in space stems from the entrainment of ambient cold air to the flame that results in flame quenching at the trailing edge of the flame. Thereafter, the unburned fuel/air mixture in the downstream region mixes with the entrained air and the hot combustion products from the upstream leading flame front, leading to reignition with distributed reactions. The current results provide a direct experimental evidence that distributed reactions can be a common combustion mode along with the results (Ref. [1], Zhou et al., 2015) recently reported in the highly turbulent premixed jet flames.

Abstract:The images of turbulent flame were acquired by using a digital imaging system on an industry-scale pulverized coal-fired test rig.The fractal dimensions of thin thermal mixing layers in flame were computed through morphology-based flame image processing techniques.The effects of the ratios of primary air and secon-dary/tertiary air on fractal dimensions were characterized.The results presented in this work show that the varia-tions of fractal dimension are closely related to the ratio changes of primary air and secondary/tertiary air. Therefore,the fractal dimensions of flame thin thermal mixing layers can be used as an important indicator for the control and optimization of a combustion process.
A Direct Numerical Simulation Study of Flame Structure and Stabilization of an Experimental High Ka CH4/air Premixed Jet Flame

Abstract:In the present work, a direct numerical simulation (DNS) of an experimental high Karlovitz number (Ka) CH4/air piloted premixed flame was analyzed to study the inner structure and the stabilization mechanism of the turbulent flame. A reduced chemical mechanism for premixed CH4/air combustion with NOx based on GRI-Mech3.0 was used, including 268 elementary reactions and 28 transported species. The evolution of the stretch factor, I0, indicates that the burning rate per unit flame surface area is considerably reduced in the near field and exhibits a minimum at x/D = 8. Downstream, the burning rate gradually increases. The stretch factor is different between different species, suggesting the quenching of some reactions but not others. Comparison between the turbulent flame and strained laminar flames indicates that certain aspects of the mean flame structure can be represented surprisingly well by flamelets if changes in boundary conditions are accounted for and the strain rate of the mean flow is employed; however, the thickening of the flame due to turbulence is not captured. The spatial development of displacement speeds is studied at higher Ka than previous DNS. In contrast to almost all previous studies, the mean displacement speed conditioned on the flame front is negative in the near field, and the dominant contribution to the displacement speed is normal diffusion with the reaction contribution being secondary. Further downstream, reaction overtakes normal diffusion, contributing to a positive displacement speed. The negative displacement speed in the near field implies that the flame front situates itself in the pilot region where the inner structure of the turbulent flame is affected significantly, and the flame stabilizes in balance with the inward flow. Notably, in the upstream region of the turbulent flame, the main reaction contributing to the production of OH, H+O2⇔O+OH (R35), is weak. Moreover, oxidation reactions, H2+OH⇔H+H2O (R79) and CO+OH⇔CO2+H (R94), are influenced by H2O and CO2 from the pilot and are completely quenched. Hence, the entire radical pool of OH, H and O is affected. However, the fuel consumption layer remains comparably active and generates heat, mainly via the reaction CH4+OH⇔CH3+H2O (R93).

Abstract:It has been predicted that several changes will occur when premixed flames are subjected to the extreme levels of turbulence that can be found in practical combustors. This paper is a review of recent experimental and DNS results that have been obtained for the range of extreme turbulence, and it includes a discussion of cases that agree or disagree with predictions. "Extreme turbulence" is defined to correspond to a turbulent Reynolds number (Re-T, based on integral scale) that exceeds 2800 or a turbulent Karlovitz number that exceeds 100, for reasons that are discussed in Section 2.1. Several data bases are described that include measurements made at Lund University, the University of Sydney, the University of Michigan and the U.S. Air Force Research Lab. The data bases also include DNS results from Sandia National Laboratory, the University of New South Wales, Newcastle University, the California Institute of Technology and the University of Cambridge. Several major observations are: (a) DNS now can be achieved for a realistic geometry (of the Lund University jet burner) even for extreme turbulence levels, (b) state relations (conditional mean profiles) from DNS and experiments do tend to agree with laminar profiles, at least for methane-air and hydrogen-air reactants that are not preheated, and (c) regime boundaries have been measured and they do not agree with predicted boundaries. These findings indicate that the range of conditions for which flamelet models should be valid is larger than what was previously believed. Additional parameters have been shown to be important; for example, broken reactions occur if the "back-support" is insufficient due to the entrainment of cold gas into the product gas. Turbulent burning velocity measurements have been extended from the previous normalized turbulence levels (u'/S-L) of 24 up to a value of 163. Turbulent burning velocities no longer follow the trend predicted by Shchelkin but they tend to follow the trend predicted by Damkohler. The boundary where flamelet broadening begins was measured to occur at Re-Taylor = 13.8, which corresponds to an integral scale Reynolds number (Re-T) of 2800. This measured regime boundary can be explained by the idea that flame structure is altered when the turbulent diffusivity at the Taylor scale exceeds a critical value, rather than the idea that changes occur when Kolmogorov eddies just fit inside a flamelet. A roadmap to extend DNS to complex chemistry and to higher Reynolds numbers is discussed. Exascale computers, machine learning, adaptive mesh refinement and embedded DNS show promise. Some advances are reviewed that have extended the use of line and planar PLIF and CARS laser diagnostics to studies that consider complex hydrocarbon fuels and harsh environments. Direct Numerical Simulation of a High Ka CH4/air Stratified Premixed Jet Flame

Abstract:Direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a high Karlovitz number (Ka) CH4/air stratified premixed jet flame was performed and used to provide insights into fundamentals of turbulent stratified premixed flames and their modelling implications. The flame exhibits significant stratification where the central jet has an equivalence ratio of 0.4, which is surrounded by a pilot flame with an equivalence ratio of 0.9. A reduced chemical mechanism for CH4/air combustion based on GRI-Mech3.0 was used, including 268 elementary reactions and 28 transported species. Over five billion grid points were employed to adequately resolve the turbulence and flame scales. The maximum Ka of the flame in the domain approaches 1400, while the jet Damkohler number (Da(jet)) is as low as 0.0027. The flame shows early stages of CH4/air combustion in the near field and later stages in the far field; the separation of combustion stages can be largely attributed to the small jet flow timescale and the low Dajet. The gradient of equivalence ratio in the flame normal direction, d phi/dn, is predominantly negative, and small-scale stratification was found to play an important role in determining the local flame structure. Notably, the flame is thinner, the burning is more intense, and the levels of the radical pools, including OH, O and H, are higher in regions with stronger mixture stratification. The local flame structure is more strained and less curved in these regions. The mean flame structure is considerably influenced by the strong shear, which can be reasonably predicted by unity Lewis number stratified premixed flamelets when the thermochemical conditions of the reactant and product are taken locally from the DNS and the strain rates close to those induced by the mean flow are used in the flamelet calculation. An enhanced secondary reaction zone behind the primary reaction zone was observed in the downstream region, where the temperature is high and the fuel concentration is negligible, consistent with the observed separation of combustion stages. The main reactions involved in the secondary reaction zone, including CO + OH double left right arrow CO2 + H (R94), H + O-2 + M double left right arrow HO2 + M (R31), HO2 + OH double left right arrow H2O + O-2 (R82) and H-2 + OH double left right arrow H2O + H (R79), are related to accumulated intermediate species including CO, H-2, H, and OH. The detailed mechanism of intermediate species accumulation was explored and its effect on chemical pathways and heat release rate was highlighted. (C) 2018 The Combustion Institute. Abstract:In this work, the flame structures of the recent Darmstadt turbulent premixed/stratified flame series with 20% volume fraction H 2 addition (Schneider et al., PCI, 2019) are analyzed using flamelet tabulated manifolds. Three different methane/hydrogen flames (MHFs) with increasing complexity are studied. The effects of differential diffusion, stretch and stratification on the applicability of the flamelet model are investigated in detail. Specifically, to investigate the differential diffusion effects, three different modeling approaches are considered, in which the diffusion fluxes are calculated using the multi-component (MC), mixture-averaged (MA) and unity Lewis number (Le1) approaches. To investigate stretch effects, a strained premixed flamelet (SPF) model is proposed, in which the flame's internal response to stretch is characterized with an additional tabulation coordinate. A double-conditioning analysis is conducted for different flame series. The dataset is conditioned on both the local equivalence ratio and local stratification to analyze the coupling effects of stratification and differential diffusion on the flame structure. Abstract:This work focuses on flame structure analysis and composition space modeling of a multidimensional premixed hydrogen flame transitioning from a laminar stable condition to a thermodiffusively unstable state. Specifically, budget and a priori analyses are conducted based on a detailed chemistry simulation of a 2D expanding, thermodiffusively unstable hydrogen flame, and the recurring issues for modeling dif-ferential diffusion, the strain rate and curvature in the thermodiffusively unstable flame are addressed in a single newly proposed flamelet tabulation method. The model is based on recently developed self-contained strained-curved premixed flamelet equations in composition space (Scholtissek et al., 2019, CNF), which inherently incorporate the interactions among differential diffusion, the strain rate and cur-vature. The validity of the newly proposed flamelet tabulation method is evaluated based on the rep-resentative strongly strained-curved flamelets extracted from the reference simulation, featuring wide ranges of strain rates and curvatures. The advance realized in the proposed flamelet model is confirmed by comparing it with a conventional flamelet tabulation method. Through the budget analysis, the effects of curvature on the diffusion along the flame front (i.e., tangential diffusion) are quantified. Through the a priori analysis, the suitability of the proposed flamelet tabulation method in predicting differential dif-fusion is confirmed. For the prediction of the strain rate and curvature, it is found that introducing the strain rate and curvature themselves as the trajectory variables does not necessarily improve the predic-tion accuracy in the reaction zone, compared to the flamelet model based on the 1D freely-propagating premixed flame with differential diffusion. To remedy this, the trajectory variables that can characterize the flame structure's internal response to the strain rate and curvature are identified. The results show that the thermo-chemical variables in the thermodiffusively unstable flame at atmospheric pressure can be accurately predicted by the newly introduced trajectory variables based on the 1D strained-curved flamelet equations.(c) 2021 The Combustion Institute. Effect of Differential Diffusion on Turbulent Lean Premixed Hydrogen Enriched Flames Through Structure Analysis

Abstract:This study presents the flame structure influenced by the differential diffusion effects and evaluates the structural modifications induced by the turbulence, thus to understand the coupling effects of the diffusively unstable flame fronts and the turbulence distortion. Lean premixed CH4/H2/air flames were conducted using a piloted Bunsen burner. Three hydrogen fractions of 0, 30% and 60% were adopted and the laminar flame speed was kept constant. The turbulence was generated with a single-layer perforated plate, which was combined with different bulk velocities to obtain varied turbulence intensities. Quasi-laminar flames without the plate were also performed. Explicit flame morphology was obtained using the OH-PLIF. The curvature, flame surface density and turbulent burning velocity were measured. Results show that the preferential transport of hydrogen produces negatively curved cusps flanked with positively curved bulges, which are featured by skewed curvature pdfs and consistent with the typical structure caused by the Darrieus-Landau instability. Prevalent bulge-cusp like wrinkles remain with relatively weak turbulence. However, stronger turbulence can break the bulges to be finer, and induce random positively curved cusps, therefore to destroy the bulge-cusp structures. Evident positive curvatures are generated in this process modifying the skewed curvature pdfs to be more symmetric, while the negative curvatures are not affected seriously. From low to high turbulence intensities, the hydrogen addition always strengthens the flame wrinkling. The augmentation of flame surface density and turbulent burning velocity with hydrogen is even more obvious at higher turbulence intensity. It is suggested that the differential diffusion can persist and even be strengthened with strong turbulence.

Abstract:The dynamics of a premixed hydrogen/air flame propagating in a closed vessel is investigated using high-speed schlieren cinematography, pressure measurement and numerical simulation. A dynamically thickened flame approach with a 19-step detailed chemistry is employed in the numerical simulation to model the premixed combustion. The schlieren photographs show that a remarkable distorted tulip flame is initiated after a classical tulip flame has been fully produced. A second distorted tulip flame is generated with a cascade of indentations created in succession before the vanishing of the first one. The flame dynamics observed in the experiments is well reproduced in the numerical simulation. The burnt region near the flame front is entirely dominated by a reverse flow during the formation of the distorted tulip flame. The distorted tulip flame can be formed in the absence of vortex motion. The pressure wave leads to periodic flame deceleration and plays an essential role in the distorted tulip formation. The numerical results corroborate the mechanism that the distorted tulip flame formation is a manifestation of Taylor instability.
Flame Structure Analysis and Flamelet Modeling of Turbulent Pulverized Solid Fuel Combustion with Flue Gas Recirculation

Abstract:In this work, carrier-phase direct numerical simulation (CP-DNS) is conducted for a pulverized coal flame in a temporally evolving turbulent jet with flue gas recirculation (FGR). Detailed gas phase kinetics are considered and heavy hydrocarbon molecules up to C20 are included to accurately represent tars in the volatile matter. The structure of the pulverized coal flame is analyzed with different flamelet models considering two mixing scenarios, namely the mixing of recirculated flue gases with the other fuel or oxidizer streams. In the first model approach, the mixing of recirculated flue gases with the gaseous fuels released from the coal particle is characterized with a fuel-split-based flamelet (FLT-FS) model. In the second approach, the mixing of flue gases with the transport air is described with an oxidizer-split-based flamelet (FLT-OS) model. In total, five trajectory variables are introduced in the flamelet table to represent the pulverized coal combustion states with FGR. The suitability of the flamelet models is evaluated through an a priori analysis for both the fully ignited state, as well as (more challenging) the igniting states. Comparisons show that both the FLT-FS model and the FLT-OS model perform well in predicting the thermo-chemical quantities for the fully ignited state. The FLT-OS model performs slightly better than the FLT-FS model in predicting the gas temperature and specific species mass fractions. This is due to the fact that the partial oxidization of the gaseous fuels by the hot flue gases outside the mixing layers cannot be reproduced by the FLT-FS model. While the state at the beginning of ignition can still be accurately predicted by the FLT-OS model, discrepancies can be observed for the tar species C20H10 and the intermediate species CO at a later stage when many particles ignite and the reason for this is explained. Further analysis in the flamelet solution spaces shows that the gaseous fuels are ignited on the fuel-lean side. The time evolution of the gas temperature from the beginning of ignition to the fully ignited state can be overall characterized by both flamelet models.
Measurement of the Instantaneous Flame Front Structure of Syngas Turbulent Premixed Flames at High Pressure

Abstract:Instantaneous flame front structure of syngas turbulent premixed flames including the local radius of curvature, the characteristic radius of curvature, the fractal inner cutoff scale and the local flame angle were derived from the experimental OH-PLIF images. The CO/H2/CO2/air flames as a model of syngas/air combustion were investigated at pressure of 0.5MPa and compared to that of CH4/air flames. The convex and concave structures of the flame front were detected and statistical analysis including the PDF and ADF of the local radius of curvature and local flame angle were conducted. Results show that the flame front of turbulent premixed flames at high pressure is a wrinkled flame front with small scale convex and concave structures superimposed with large scale flame branches. The convex structures are much more frequent than the concave ones on flame front which reflects a general characteristic of the turbulent premixed flames at high pressure. The syngas flames possess much wrinkled flame front with much smaller fine cusps structure compared to that of CH4/air flames and the main difference is on the convex structure. The effect of turbulence on the general wrinkled scale of flame front is much weaker than that of the smallest wrinkled scale. The general wrinkled scale is mainly dominated by the turbulence vortex scale, while, the smallest wrinkled scale is strongly affected by the flame intrinsic instability. The effect of flame intrinsic instability on flame front of turbulent premixed flame is mainly on the formation of a large number of convex structure propagating to the unburned reactants and enlarge the effective contact surface between flame front and unburned reactants.
Experimental and numerical study of premixed hydrogen/air flame propagating in a combustion chamber

Abstract:An experimental and numerical study of dynamics of premixed hydrogen/air flame in a closed explosion vessel is described. High-speed shlieren cinematography and pressure recording are used to elucidate the dynamics of the combustion process in the experiment. A dynamically thickened flame model associated with a detailed reaction mechanism is employed in the numerical simulation to examine the flame-flow interaction and effect of wall friction on the flame dynamics. The shlieren photographs show that the flame develops into a distorted tulip shape after a well-pronounced classical tulip front has been formed. The experimental results reveal that the distorted tulip flame disappears with the primary tulip cusp and the distortions merging into each other, and then a classical tulip is repeated. The combustion dynamics is reasonably reproduced in the numerical simulations, including the variations in flame shape and position, pressure build-up and periodically oscillating behavior. It is found that both the tulip and distorted tulip flames can be created in the simulation with free-slip boundary condition at the walls of the vessel and behave in a manner quite close to that in the experiments. This means that the wall friction could be unimportant for the tulip and distorted tulip formation although the boundary layer formed along the sidewalls has an influence to a certain extent on the flame behavior near the sidewalls. The distorted tulip flame is also observed to be produced in the absence of vortex flow in the numerical simulations. The TF model with a detailed chemical scheme is reliable for investigating the dynamics of distorted tulip flame propagation and its underlying mechanism.

Abstract:A Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) database of statistically planar flames ranging from the wrinkled flamelets to the thin reaction zones regime and DNS data for a Bunsen premixed flame representing the wrinkled flamelets regime have been utilised to evaluate the fractal dimensions of flame surfaces using the filtering dimension method, the box-counting algorithm and the correlation dimension approach. The fractal dimension evaluated based on the fully resolved three-dimensional data has been found to be reasonably approximated by adding unity to the equivalent fractal dimension evaluated based on two-dimensional projections irrespective of the methodology of extracting fractal dimension. This indicates that the flame surface can be approximated as a self-similar fractal surface for the range of Karlovitz and Damköhler numbers considered here. While all methods, provide results identical to each other for benchmark problems, it has been found that the fractal dimension evaluation based on box-counting method provides almost identical results as that obtained using the filtering dimension method for both three and two dimensions, while the fractal dimensions based on the correlation dimension tend to be slightly smaller. The findings of the current analysis have the potential to be used to reliably estimate the actual fractal dimension in 3D based on experimentally obtained 2D binarised reaction progress variable field. The inner cut-off scales estimated based on all three methodologies yield comparable results in terms of order of magnitude with the box-counting method predicting a smaller value of inner cut-off scale in comparison to other methods. The execution times for fractal dimension extraction based on filtering dimension and box-counting methodologies are found to be comparable but the correlation dimension method is found to be considerably faster than the two alternative approaches and provides results consistent with theoretical bounds in all cases.

Experimental Study on Geometry Characteristics of Turbulent Premixed Flames for Natural Gas/Air Mixtures

Abstract:In this study, focusing on the geometry characteristics of spherical expanding flame, the turbulent premixed flames of natural gas/air mixtures were investigated in a fan-stirred turbulent combustor. The effects of initial temperature ( T =300–400 K), initial pressure ( P =0.1–0.3 MPa), turbulence intensity ( u ′=1.0–2.7 m/s), oxygen volumetric percentage ( φ (O 2 )=15%–21%) and carbon dioxide volumetric percentage ( φ (CO 2 )=0–20%) were delved into. The flame profile under the Cartesian coordinate system was derived from the schlieren images taken by the high-speed camera. Besides, from both macroscopic and microscopic perspectives, the influence of experimental conditions on the flame geometry characteristics was explored through flame front extraction, wavelet decomposition and network topology. The results demonstrate that for significant flame wrinkling, changes in species concentrations and turbulence intensity have more pronounced effects on the flame wrinkling ratio. The wrinkling of the flame front maintains a certain degree of similarity, as evidenced by the locally concentrated distribution of the angles of the maximum fluctuation radius. The disturbance energy under large-scale (D6–D8) disturbances exhibits relatively high values with a similar trend, exerting a significant impact on the geometry characteristics of the flame front. The peaks of correlation degree are scattered either with the decomposition scale or the development of flame radius, indicating no linear correlation between different detail components. Furthermore, the probability distribution of node degrees in key wrinkled regions exhibits different trends with that of large-scale wrinkling and disturbance energy, especially with changes in initial pressure. This occurs because the number of key wrinkles varies based on the perturbation's strength or the region's span. Consequently, an increase in the fluctuation frequency of the flame's local radius may not necessarily lead to an increase in the number of key folded regions.

Abstract:Turbulent impinging flame dynamics were investigated using methane/air Bunsen flames with planar laser induced florescence (OH-PLIF), high-speed color imaging camera, thermal imaging camera and acoustic recording microphone as main measuring equipment. Also in this investigation, Digital Flame Color Discrimination (DFCD) and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) methods were employed to complete the post process. The main aim of this paper is to investigate turbulent flame variations and their correlation with the temperature distribution across an impinging plate. Results showed that, the alteration in the plate-to-nozzle distance results in the variations in the radial temperature distribution and the flame shapes. OH-PLIF images and high speed flame images showed discernible changes on flame characteristics. Audible combustion noise was noticed and collected using Matlab controlled microphone, FFT results showed a strong correlation between combustion noise intensity and the impinging distance. From analyzing the relationship between flame images and flame burning noise, a crucial frequency of combustion noise was found. (C) 2015 Published by Elsevier Inc.

Abstract:The fractal structure of LPG diffusion fire edge was theoretically studied on the basis of image processing and fractal theory.Each flame image was divided into five zones in the axial direction and the variation of the fire edge fractal dimension was axially analyzed.The relationships of flame length,fractal dimension and overall equivalence ratio were also investigated by changing the oxygen flow rate.The results show that both the length and the fluctuation range of flame gradually decrease with the increasing of peroxy coefficient,while the fractal dimension from the nozzle to the end of the flame decreases first and then increases within small range.
Fractal Morphology Effect Upon Fire Smoke Particle Coagulation

Abstract:The experimental observations found the fire smoke particles to be characteristic of the fractal structure, which enhances the collision area and influences the particle size and concentration. A numerical simulation of Brownian coagulation of fractal agglomerates of n-heptane fire smoke particles is presented by combining the fire model and the coagulation model. The fire model gives the output parameters such as soot volume fraction, air temperature, and dynamic viscosity, while the coagulation model uses the fire model output parameters to give the time dependent size distribution. The results show that compared with spherical coagulation, fractal dimension enhances the coagulation rate, the particle number concentration decreases and the geometric mean diameter increases in a bigger degree, which agrees with the measurements in a better way.

Abstract:The laminar combustion characteristics of CH4-H2-CO-Air are studied in a constant volume combustion chamber with different hydrogen content ratios and the initial conditions of 300 K and 0.2 MPa by schlieren technology. The influence laws of flame instability are analyzed through the influence laws of hydrogen content ratio and equivalence ratio (Φ) on the fractal dimensions of the flame contour and the ratio of the total flame face cracks' lengths to the flame radius (L/R), as well as the influence laws of hydrodynamic instability and thermal-diffusive instabilities on the flames. The results show that L/R is more sensitive to flame instabilities than flame front fractal dimensions due to a wider sampling range. After R exceeds a certain value, for lean and rich combustion conditions with the same distance from the stoichiometric ratio, the L/R is greater during lean combustion, and as the equivalence ratio gradually increases from 0.6 to 1.4, the effect of increasing hydrogen content (Hydrogen mole fraction ranges from 60% to 66.67%) on flame instability gradually shifts from promotion to suppression. This study has certain reference value for the combustion application of biomass synthesis gas.
