Abstract:Snakes or active contours have been proved to be powerful tools for contour detection. Since these models were first proposed by Kass[1], they have been widely used in the areas of object recognition, computer vision, computer graphics and biomedical images. Because the energy function of a snake consists of items measuring both image features such as edges and ideal properties of a curve such as continuity and smoothness, the extracted contour can not only fit the object shape well but also be insensitive to noise. However, traditional snakes have a great limitation that they can not approximate the contour concavities and convexities very well. In order to tackle this problem, we present Size-changeable Spring Snakes (SSSs). In SSSs, the attractive internal force of the traditional snakes is replaced by the elastic spring force that can be both attractive and repulsive. Therefore, SSSs can progress further into concavities and convexities. SSSs can also change their size in their evolution to better adapt to the contour shape characteristics. Experimental results show that SSSs can handle the concavities and convexities efficiently.
