Abstract:A load cell with digital output has been developed utilizing flexible hinges and a precision AT-cut quartz resonator as the sensing element. A farce proportional to the applied force is applied to the quartz resonator via elastic body made up by flexible hinges. Since the load cell include only two parts and flexible hinges have no mechanical friction and no clearance, non-elastic effects are minimized. Measurement range depends on the sizes of the flexible hinges, so one quartz resonator can be used as sensing element of load cells with different measurement range. Quartz resonator and geometric dimensions of flexible hinges are discussed and temperature characteristics of the load cell are presented. A practical design is developed and experimental results are given.
