Abstract:Experimental and theoretical methods were used to study newly synthesized thiophene-pi-conjugated donor-acceptor compounds, which were found to exhibit efficient intramolecular charge-transfer emission in polar solvents with relatively large Stokes shifts and strong solvatochromism. To gain insight into the solvatochromic behavior of these compounds, the dependence of the spectra on solvent polarity was studied on the basis of Lippert-Mataga models. We found that intramolecular charge transfer in these donor-acceptor systems is significantly dependent on the electron-withdrawing substituents at the thienyl 2-position. The dependence of the absorption and emission spectra of these compounds in methanol on the concentration of trifluoroacetic acid was used to confirm intramolecular charge-transfer emission. Moreover, the calculated absorption and emission energies, which are in accordance with the experimental values, suggested that fluorescence can be emitted from different geometric conformations. In addition, a novel S(2) fluorescence phenomenon for some of these compounds was also be observed. The fluorescence excitation spectra were used to confirm the S(2) fluorescence. We demonstrate that S(2) fluorescence can be explained by the calculated energy gap between the S(2) and S(1) states of these molecules. Furthermore, nonlinear optical behavior of the thiophene-pi-conjugated compound with diethylcyanomethylphosphonate substituents was predicted in theory.

Abstract:A novel N-coumarin derivative, namely 9,10-[di-p-(7-diethylamino-coumarin-3-yl) thiopheneyl]anthracene ((CTh)2A), containing anthracene as the core and 3-thiophene N-coumarin as the substituent was synthesized, and its structure was confirmed by 1H NMR and IR spectroscopies. The optical, electrochemical and thermal properties were investigated. Thermogravimetric analysis and PL spectra reveal the high thermal and good photoluminescence characteristics. The coumarin derivative exhibits blue photoluminescence with high fluorescence quantum yield in solution (up to 40%). The results show that the derivative would serve as promising organic light-emitting diode luminescent material.

Abstract:Novel p-methoxylphenoxylsulfonyl-phthalocyanine [H2Pc(SO2-p-OC6H4OCH3)(4)] and chlorosulfonyl-phthalocyanine [H2Pc(SO2Cl)(4)] were synthesized by chlorosulfonation and esterification of metal-free phthalocyanine, respectively. Their structures were identified and characterized. The substituted phthalocyanine possess enhanced long wavelength absorbance, better solubility and thermostability.

Abstract:Structurally simple chalcone derivatives 1-2 are prepared and their diversified emission behaviors are deeply investigated. Two polymorphs (1G:lambda(em) = 536 nm, Phi(f) = 0.08, tau = 1.81 ns; 1O:lambda(em) = 573 nm, Phi(f) = 0.19, tau = 10.82 ns) with distinctively different emission behaviors are constructed by finely controlling the crystallization conditions of compound 1. 1G exhibits typical amplified spontaneous emission while 1O shows an interesting blue shift under smashing process (1O-S: lambda(em) = 562 nm, Phi(f) = 0.23, tau = 6.42 ns), which is ascribed to their different molecular packing structures and intermolecular interactions. Notably, simply introducing a fluorine substituent effectively endows the crystal with red emission (crystal 2: lambda(em) = 598 nm, Phi(f) = 0.16, tau = 18.77 ns). Thus multicolor emissions including green, yellow, orange, and red emissions are obtained based on this simple chalcone skeleton.

Abstract:Nickel-catalyzed cycloaddition of alkynes and 2-sulfobenzoic anhydrides gives highly functionalized thiochromenones. The reaction undergoes a deoxygenative rather than decarbonylative pathway and shows advantages of an excellent isolated yield (up to 95%), high reaction efficiency, and high regioselectivity. As one of the resulted products, 2,3-di(triphenylamine)-thiolchromenone possesses a typical aggregation-induced emission property and emits efficient near-infrared fluorescence.

Abstract:With 3-nitrobenzonitrile and 3-mercapto-1-propanesulfonate as the starting materials, three kinds of water-soluble phthalocyanines with four 3-sulfopropylsulfonyl groups were synthesized by tetracyclization in the presence of metal acetate. The photophysical properties were measured by UV-Vis absorption spectra, fluorescence spectra and so on. The fluorescence quantum yield and the singlet oxygen yield were calculated. Compared with ZnPc, the shape of the fluorescence emission spectrums of the water-soluble phthalocyanines synthesized by introducing electron-withdrawing groups did not change, but the maximum fluorescence emission wavelengths had more than 10 nm red shifts. Among the three kinds of water-soluble phthalocyanines, zinc phthalocyanine had the highest fluorescence quantum yield and copper phthalocyanine had the lowest fluorescence quantum yield. Their fluorescence in aqueous solution showed a double exponential decay, which could be attributed to the protonation or deprotonation of excited states. The singlet oxygen quantum yield of zinc phthalocyanine was maximum, followed by hollow phthalocyanine, and copper phthalocyanine was minimum. The results of spectral analysis showed that the synthesized zinc phthalocyanine and hollow phthalocyanine have high singlet oxygen quantum yield and high photostability and are expected to be used as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy and photoimmunotherapy.

Abstract:A series of pi-conjugated compounds (1-23) were successfully synthesized by the Sonogashira, Suzuki, and Wittig-Horner reactions. The structure-property relationship about photoluminescence based on these synthesized compounds was systematically discussed in detail. In addition, energy gaps between ground and excited states of these compounds, which were in good agreement with the experimental observation, were calculated by the semiempirical parametrized PM3 method. It was revealed that emission efficiency largely depends on molecular structure, aggregation type, and size of nanoaggregates.

Abstract:The photosensitizing properties of a novel plithalocyanine analogue, sulfonated dihydroxy phosphorus(V) tetrabenzotriazacorrole [P(OH)(2)TBCSn] and a non-sulfonated one [P(OH)(2)TBC] are reported in this paper. Different from other phthalocyanine derivatives, P(OH)(2)TBCSn shows little aggregation in aqueous solution. The fluorescence quantum yield (Phi(F)) of P(OH)(2)TBCSn is lower than that of the non-sulfonated one. Studies of triplet state photophysics show that the presence of peripheral substituents on the macrocycle enhances the quantum yield of the triplet state. The sulfonated derivative, P(OH)(2)TBCSn, has a longer triplet lifetime (tau(T) = 0.234 ms) and higher singlet oxygen quantum yield (Phi(Delta) = 0.88) than P(OH)(2)TBC. Together with the ground-state absorption properties, the photo sensitizing properties of the new compound suggest that it may be used as an excellent photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy (PDT).

Abstract:A series of spiro-phosphonium compounds have been synthesized by copper-mediated coupling reaction of phosphacyclic compounds with alkynes. Their photophysical properties are tuned by varying substituents and exhibit different luminescent colors from blue to green, and finally, yellow. The fluorescence quantum efficiency of diethyl spiro-xanthenebenzophosphole 3aa in solid and liquid states reached 31% and 76%, respectively. Diphenyl spiro-xanthenebenzophosphole 3ad displayed relatively low cytotoxicity toward lung cancer cells A549 and was able to effectively penetrate the cell membrane and maintain strong staining. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations have been performed to explore the origin of their photophysical properties.

Abstract:A novel phthalocyanine, 2,9(10),16(17),23(24)-tetra(4-benzoyl)phenoxyphthalocyanine, and its complexes with Zn(II), Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) have been synthesized and characterized by a combination of elemental analysis, IR, 1H NMR, UV-vis spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. All of the materials are very soluble in common organic solvents such as dichloromethane, chloroform, tetrahydrofuran, N,N-dimethylformamide and dimethyl sulfoxide. The Q band wavelengths of the complexes decrease in the order: Zn > Cu > Ni > Co. Redox processes were observed at −1.06, −0.74, 0.51 and 0.98 V for the free phthalocyanine, at −0.72 and 1.04 V for the Co(II) complex, at −1.24, −0.77, −0.24, 0.61 and 0.91 V for the Cu(II) complex, and at −0.74 and 1.20 V for the Ni(II) complex. The cyclic voltammograms of the phthalocyanine ring of the four species are similar, with reduction and oxidation couples each involving a one-electron transfer process.

Abstract:A series of soluble 2,9,16,23-tetrasubstituted free-base phthalocyanines were synthesized and studied spectroscopically. The lowest electronic transition energy and the lowest excited singlet state energy of the phthalocyanines substituted with alkyl, alkoxy and aryloxy groups can be correlated well with the Hammett's meta-directing group effect. While the strong electron-withdrawing group (nitro) and the strong electron-donating group (amino) may induce intense intramolecular charge-transfer which results in the formation of aggregates, marked distortion of the absorption spectra and quenching of the excited states. However, all the substituents have less influence on the vibrational level.

Abstract:A new series of fluorophores, 5-methoxy-2-(2-, 3- or 4-pyridyl)thiazoles (2-, 3- or 4-MPT, respectively), were synthesized and their photophysical properties investigated. 2- and 4-MPT are highly fluorescent in polar solvents. Combined with theoretical calculations, studies of the excited state lifetimes in different solvents reveal that their fluorescence mainly results from the internal charge transfer excited state. Acidobasic properties of their ground states and excited states were studied with steady and transient fluorescence spectroscopy. 2- and 4-MPT displayed a pH sensitive fluorescent behavior with a dual-emission in the range 2 to 6 in an aqueous system.

Abstract:Tetraphenylene-chalcones hybrid derivatives (TPE-T, TPE-B, TPE-N and TPE-Q) have been designed and synthesized, and their optical properties have also been investigated. These new organic fluorophores exhibited relatively large Stokes shifts and absorption extinction coefficients, solvation effects, and some of them also showed moderate AIE effects and solid fluorescence. More significantly, TPE-N shows good fluorescence emission (solution, solid and aggregation states). Single-crystal analysis indicates that molecular stacking patterns are the critical reason affecting the optical properties in solid state. Theoretical calculation explain the fluorescence behaviors because of ICT processes. It has been further demonstrated that these organic fluorophores can be employed for imaging in living cells.

Multifluorescence Emission of Several Novel Phthalocyanines As Potential Photodynamic Diagnosis Materials

Abstract:Two kinds of novel phthalocyanines: tetra-azobenzene substituted phthalocyanine (metal free and with zinc as centric atom) and novel polymeric phthalocyanine carboxyl based on pentaerythritol framework (with ytterbium and aluminum as centric atoms) have been synthesized and their electronic adsorption and emission spectrum haven been investigated in water solution and organic solvent. Both synthesized compounds can emit two fluorescence peaks when excited at low wavelength (below 400nm) and one emission peak when excited at long wavelength (higher than 600 nm). For polymeric aluminum phthalocyanine carboxyl, in pH7.4 buffer solution, when excited at 330nm, beside normal fluorescence peak at 720nm, a second emission peak appears at 455nm. The emission at 720 nm can be intensified by addition of hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) while the peak at 455nm does not. The fluorescence quantum yield of two emission peaks is 0.35 (720nm em, 635nm ex) and 0.33 (455nm em, 330nm ex), respectively. This equivalent multi-emission phenomenon by different excited wavelength indicates well applied potential in dual-wavelength photodynamic diagnose and fluorescence imagination.

Abstract:A novel asymmetrically substituted, soluble, metal-free phthalocyanine with only one reactive nucleophilic substituent of amine was synthesized fur the first time by reduction reaction with sodium sulfide nonahydrate of the nitro group in nitrotri(tert-butylphthalocyanine, which was prepared by mixed condensation of two corresponding diiminoisoindolines. The compound can be separated by common column chromatography either on neutral Al2O3 using chloroform/hexane as the eluting solvent or on silica gel using chloroform as the eluent. The structure was confirmed by elemental analysis, H-1 NMR, UV-vis, IR, and mass spectroscopy. Thermostability of the compound was checked by thermogravimetry analysis. Langmuir-Blodgett films of the compound were fabricated, and the configuration of the phthalocyanine molecules at the air-water interface was suggested in terms of the limiting area per molecule. Second-harmonic generation (SHG) from monolayer and multilayers was measured, The SH intensities of the monolayer relative to a Y-cut quartz wedge I-2 omega(p-p) and I-2 omega(s-p) are 1.97 x 10(-6) and 1.71 x 10(-7), respectively. The second-order susceptibility (chi((2))) and the molecular hyperpolarizability (beta) values of the monolayer are 3.33 x 10(-8) and 5.90 x 10(-30) esu, respectively.

Abstract:The synthesis and photochemical properties are reported for a series of novel amphiphilic carboxyl polymeric phthalocyanines, with zinc (3a), aluminum (3b), ytterbium (3c) and hydrogen (metal-free, 3d) as the substituted central atom, respectively. The synthesis routes included cyclotetramerization of tetra-phthalonitriles and subsequent hydrolysis of cyano to carboxyl in alkaline solution. All four molecules were verified to be oligomers by viscosity method. Specifically, 3c showed strongest fluorescent emission, which can be elevated by Triton X 100 and CTAB. The singlet oxygen quantum yield (Phi(Delta)) for 3a and 3b were larger than that of 3c and 3d. In the presence of surfactants, nearly 2 folds enhancement of Phi(Delta) was observed as 0.76 and 0.70 for 3a and 3b, respectively. The characteristic photochemical properties of these oligomers suggested potential applications in photodynamic therapy, photocatalysis and photodynamic diagnoses.

Abstract:This study presents synthesis of novel peripherally tetrasubstituted Zn(II) and In(III) phthalocyanine complexes bearing 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy groups. These phthalocyanines were characterized by performing elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and ultraviolet visible spectrophotometric techniques. Aggregation properties of the resulting phthalocyanines were studied in different concentrations of DMSO. Aggregation behavior of the newly synthesized phthalocyanines was investigated in various organic solvents, as well. Photochemical and photophysical characterization of the resulting compounds were carried out to evaluate their photodynamic therapy properties in DMSO. Abstract:Two new branched pyridinium inner salt dyes, 2,6-di[2-(N-ethyl-carbazole-3-yl)vinyl]-N-(3-sulfonatepropyl)pyridinium, inner salt (2) and 2,4,6-tri[2-(N-ethyl-carbazole-3-yl)vinyl]-N-(3-sulfonatepropyl)pyridinium, inner salt (3), with N-ethyl-carbazolyl as electron donor group and pyridine cation as electron acceptor group have been synthesized. Their single- and two-photon related fluorescence properties in various solvents have also been examined. These dyes exhibit stronger fluorescence emission relative to the corresponding linear counterpart and common pyridinium dyes with discrete cation and anion components. Three-branched organic dye 3 has a high fluorescence quantum yield as 0.12 and exhibits strong orange two-photon excited fluorescence at 608nm in THF with large two-photon absorption cross-section being 606GM.

Abstract:In this work, two novel luminescent molecules containing distorted phenothiazine-S-oxide and phenothiazine-S,S dioxide skeletons were synthesized by oxidation reactions using different oxidants (m-chloroperoxybenzoic acid, acetic acid /hydrogen peroxide). The target compounds were all confirmed by 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR and EI-MS. Combined with the results of UV-vis absorption spectra and fluorescence emission spectra, we found that the different oxidation states of S-atom, from sulfide (+2) to sulfoxide (+4) and sulfone (+6), led to the blue, yellow-green and yellowish fluorescence of these compounds in the solid states. Subsequent studies showed that the molecule containing the phenothiazine-S-oxide skeleton exhibited obvious solvatochromism, and the increase of solvent polarity induced a red-shift in the emission wavelength. Moreover, this molecule also exhibited a rare self-recovery mechanochromatic behavior. In addition, these properties were further confirmed by theoretical calculations and X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis.

Abstract:The donor-acceptor design is a classic method of synthesizing new fluorescent molecules. In this study, a series of new fluorescent compounds (1-10) were synthesized based on 2-(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-quinazoline acceptor and various amino donors. The fluorescent emissions of1-10cover the spectrum from 414 nm to 597 nm in cyclohexane solutions with various amino donors on 4- or 7-positions of quinazoline. Ultimately, compounds1and2presented the highest photoluminescence quantum yield (QY) over 80%, while compound10provided the largest Stokes shift (161 nm) in cyclohexane. Most of them have strong emissions in aggregated states such as in nanoparticles, in powders, in crystals and in films. Mechanochromic properties were observed for compounds1,2,4and7. Furthermore, blue OLEDs were fabricated by using compound2or7as the active layer.
