Abstract:Winter diet composition, selectivity and foraging strategy of red deer (Cervus elaphus alxaicus) was studied with a microhistological analysis technique, using faeces and food in the stomach in combination with field investigations from November 2003 to February 2004 in Helan Mountains between Ningxia Muslem Municipality and Inner Mongolia Municipality. We collected 219 faeces pellets from red deer,which formed 14 composite samples. The results showed that Ulmus pumila, Populus davidiana, Prunus monglica, Dasiphora spp., Graminoids (Stipa spp., Poa spp.) and Caragana spp. were staples of the red deer. The percentages of the above items in the diet were 27.37%, 11.75%, 9.83%, 8.12%, 7.51% and 6.52% respectively. The red deer had positive selectivity for Ulmus pumila, Populus davidiana, Prunus monglica, Dasiphora spp., Caragana spp. and Juniperus rigida, and negative selectivity for Graminoids (Stipa spp., Poa spp.), Pinus tabulaeformis and Pinus crassifolia. Their preference order was as follows: Populus davidiana>Juniperus rigida>Caragana spp. >Prunus monglica>Dasiphora spp. >Ulmus pumila>Graminoids>Pinus tabulaeformis>Pinus crassifolia. The results of spearman correlative analysis has show that the food selectivities of red deer did not correlate with water, crude ashes, crude protein, crude fat, crude fibre and nitrogen-free extract. The crude protein percentage in the nutritional composition of browsed plants, was sufficient for the red deer, but energy expenditure may be a more critical factor for the wintering red deer. To obtain maximum energy input with minimum energy output is the foraging strategy of the red deer in winter.
Relationship between the composition and tannin content in winter food for roe deer at Zhanhe forest farm of Lesser Xingan Mountains

Abstract:We collected 227 fecal samples of roe deer ( Capreolus pygargus ) and 28 plant species in January and February of 2010 and 2011, in Zhanhe forestry farm, Lesser Xingan Mountains of China. Then we analyzed the compositions of winter food for roe deer population using direct field observation ( DFO) and microscopic analysis of feces ( MAF) . Results showed that:1 ) The diversity ( 2. 458 ) and the evenness indices ( 0. 784 ) of food composition by DFO in 2010 were higher than those by MAF with diversity (1. 737) and the evenness index (0. 579). The diversity (2. 230) by MAF in 2011 was higher than that by DFO ( 1. 414 ); however, the evenness index ( 0. 645 ) by MAF was lower than that by DFO (0. 698). The results of food composition from the DFO and MAF revealed that Betulaceae and Salicaceae are the major food sources for ore deer population which accounted for 76%-89% of all. 2 ) We compared the results of food composition from the two methods by regressional analysis, and found that with MAF the compositions of Betulaceae and Ulmaceae in both 2010 and 2011 , Malvaceae and Rosaceae in 2010 were overestimated;however, Salicaceae, Poaceae, Polygonaceae in both two years as well as Rosaceae in 2010 and Malvaceae in 2011 were underestimated. There were significant differences in results between by DFO and MAF; however, DFO and MAF cannot be replaced by each other. 3 ) There was no significant correlation between tannins and the composition of food for roe deer. This might be because feeding behavior of roe deer is not affected by tannins in plants or this study only measured the content of total tannins but not deciding ellagitannins.
Mitochondrial DNA Distinction of Northeastern China Roe Deer, Siberian Roe Deer, and European Roe Deer, to Clarify the Taxonomic Status of Northeastern China Roe Deer

Abstract:Partial sequences of the mitochondrial control region of northeastern China roe deer were analyzed to determine the degree of genetic diversity. Fourteen haplotypes were observed. The haplotype diversity was high ( h = 0.872), nucleotide diversity was medium ( p i = 0.0108), and the average Tamura–Nei nucleotide distance among them was 1.9%, indicating that genetic diversity of roe deer from northeastern China was relatively high and that the effective population size was large historically. To clarify the northeastern China roe deer's taxonomic status, these 14 haplotypes were compared with 31 haplotypes published in Genbank from Europe, Siberia, and Korea. The average genetic distance between haplogroups of northeastern China and European roe deer (5.8%) was more than twice that between northeastern China and Siberian roe deer (2.7%), indicating sufficient variation to consider roe deer of northeastern China and Siberia as a single species ( Capreolus pygargus ), distinct from European roe deer ( Capreolus capreolus ). This is the first presentation of mtDNA data for roe deer in northeastern China, which will be helpful in investigations of genetic diversity and clarifications of the taxonomic status of roe deer in the whole of China.

Abstract:The feces of Alpine musk deer (Moschus chrysogaster) and Alashan red deer (Cervus alashanicus) were collected in the Helan Mountains,and their feeding habits in autumn were studied by microscopic analysis of the feces.The fecal samples and plant samples were collected from the habitats of Alpine musk deer and Alashan red deer,and 40 compound samples were obtained for each species.The autumn diet proportions of Alpine musk deer and Alashan red deer were processed using the frequency conversion method.The results showed that the diet of the Alpine musk deer consisted of 30 species of 20 families in autumn,including Lonicera edulis (11.96％),Astragalus spp.(10.17％),Salix characta (8.32％),Spiraea spp.(6.82％),and Leptodermis ordosica (6.18％).The diet of the Alashan red deer consisted of 29 species of 12 families,including Stipa spp.(22.15％),Ulmus glaueescens (21.14％),Poa spp.(16.90％),Potentilla parvifolia (11.62％),and Populus davidiana (10.00％).The Alpine musk deer and Alashan red deer shared nine species of food plants in total,and the index of niche overlap was 83.75％.The Shannon-Wiener index,Pielou uniformity index,food niche breadth index,and largest species diversity index were higher in Alpine musk deer than in Alashan red deer.
Winter Diet Variation and Overlap of Sympatric Red Deer and Sika Deer in Northeast China

Abstract:The red deer (Cervus elaphus) and sika deer (C. nippon) are two important and endangered herbivores in northeast China. It is unclear whether potential dietary competition exists between them when they are sympatric in winter. We used micro-histological analysis of faecal samples to determine diet composition and dietary overlap of the red deer and sika deer in northeast China. We found that red deer had a more diverse diet than sika deer, and consumed more shrubs throughout the winter. Euonymus spp. was the most stable and principal food item for both red and sika deers in winter, while the proportions of the three other major food species (Acer spp., Abies spp. and Pinus spp.) were significantly different between the deer species as well as between different winter periods. The proportions of coniferous browse of sika deer increased significantly from early to late winter (20.9 vs 45.4%), while for red deer they remained stable (18.3 vs 23.7%). Crude protein in the red and sika deer's diet was over 7.5% of dry matter in whole winter. Red and sika deer take different strategies to meet their requirements for crude protein. Red deer consumed in winter consistently more shrubs to obtain crude protein and to minimize the intake of tannins, whereas sika deer increased coniferous browse consumption in late winter to meet the crude protein requirement regardless of higher intake of tannin. Our results indicate a high degree of dietary overlap between red and sika deers (range 0.88-0.95), and suggest its further increase in late winter.
The Nutritional Composition and Digestion of Plants Foraged by Red Deer ( Cervus Elaphus Xanthopygus ) in Northeast China

Abstract:We studied species of plants foraged by red deer in the Muling forest region of northeastern China during January 2014 and 2015. We focused on nutritional composition, energy content, and the digestibility of these plants. Crude protein content varied by plant species. Average crude protein content was 7.5 ± 1.7% of dry matter, ranging from 4.5 to 10.3%. Crude lipid content did not vary by species and averaged 7 ± 1.5% (range 5.4–9.8%). Non-fiber carbohydrate (NFC) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) content varied broadly with average values being 20.1 ± 4.8% (range 13.5–28.8%) and 64.7 ± 5.9% (range 53.5–71.8%), respectively. Energy content ranged from 16.7 to 19.7 kJ/g. Average dry matter digestibility (DMD) was 46.1 ± 4.8%, with a range from 38.7 to 54.6%. Only three plants, Saussurea manshurica, Aralia elata and Equisetum hyemale exhibited DMD > 50%. NFC content explained most of the variation in energy content (r = 0.451). In contrast, energy content was inversely related to NDF (r = −0.443). There was no correlation between crude protein, crude lipid, and energy content (r protein = 0.004, r lipid = −0.190). S. manshurica, A. elata and E. hyemale had higher NFC and lower NDF content. Thus, these species offered the greatest nutritional value for wintering red deer in the study area. Along with high CP and NFC content, Taxus cuspidate also had high lignin content, and was thus, considered a good forage species for red deer.

Abstract:The experiment was conducted to study the wintering food component and food mineral element content of red deer population in Muling Chinese Yew National Nature Reserve, and the influence of mineral element on food component dur-ing winter from December 2010 to January 2013.The red deer population is fed mainly on shrubs and trees.Appearance of needles in feces might indicate nutritional deficiency during sampling period.Iron and copper are the most influential min-eral elements on food component .There is no significant influence of other mineral elements on food component .

Abstract:We studied the seasonal habitat selection of the red deer, Cervus elaphus alxaicus Bobrinskii & Flerov, 1935, in the Helan Mountains, China, from December 2007 to December 2008. Habitat selection varied widely by season. Seasonal movements between high and low elevations were attributed to changes in forage availability, alpine topography, the arid climate of the Helan Mountains, and potential competition with blue sheep, Pseudois nayaur (Hodgson, 1833). The use of vegetation types varied seasonally according to food availability and ambient temperature. Red deer used montane coniferous forest and alpine shrub and meadow zones distributed above 2,000 m and 3,000 m in summer, alpine shrub and meadows above 3,000 m in autumn, being restricted to lower elevation habitats in spring and winter. The winter habitat of C. elaphus alxaicus was dominated by Ulmus glaucescens Franch. and Juglans regia Linnaeus, deciduous trees, and differed from the habitats selected by other subspecies of red deer. Cervus elaphus alxaicus preferred habitats with abundant vegetation coverage to open habitats in winter, but the reverse pattern was observed in summer and autumn. Red deer preferred gentle slopes (<10°) but the use of slope gradient categories varied seasonally. Red deer avoidance of human disturbance in the Helan Mountains varied significantly by season. Information on red deer habitat selection can help understand the factors affecting seasonal movements and also support decision making in the management and conservation of red deer and their habitats.
High-Throughput Analysis Reveals Seasonal Variation of the Gut Microbiota Composition Within Forest Musk Deer (Moschus berezovskii)

Abstract:The gut microbiota plays a key role in the nutritional ecology of ruminants, and host diet has a significant effect on these microbial communities. Longitudinal studies assessing variation of seasonal microbiota in animals can provide a comparative context for interpreting the adaptive significance of such changes. However, few studies have investigated the effects of seasonally-related dietary shifts on the gut microbial communities of endangered forest musk deer (FMD), and the national breeding programs need this information to promote the growth of captive populations. The present study applied bacterial 16S rRNA genes based on high-throughput sequencing to profile the fecal microbial communities of FMD across four seasons. Microbial diversity was higher in seasons with dry leaf diets (winter and spring) compared to seasons with fresh leaf diets (summer and autumn). The dominant microbial phyla were Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes, and the core bacterial taxa also comprised mostly (94.40% of shared OTUs) Firmicutes (37 taxa) and Bacteroidetes (6 taxa), which were relatively stable across different seasons. The Firmicutes-Bacteroidetes ratio declined in seasons with fresh leaf diets relative to seasons with dry leaf diets, and the dominant genera among the four seasons showed no significant variation in abundance. This work explores the seasonal variation in the microbial communities of FMD for the first time, and reveals how gut microbial community dynamics vary seasonally in accordance with differences in dietary plants (fresh and dry leaf). These results indicate that the annual cyclic reconfiguration of FMD gut microbiota could be associated with shifts in dietary nutrients, which is important information to inform captive FMD management.
Comparative Analysis of Gut Microbiome Between Captive and Wild Red Deer 1 (cervus Elaphus) in Inner Mongolia

Abstract:Abstract The digestive tract of ruminants is the home of the gut microbiome ecosystem, which plays a huge role in the diagnosis of various health conditions and the analysis of physiological conditions in wild animals. Red deer is a second-class protected animal in China. In this study, we used microsatellite and high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene in fecal samples of red deer to investigate differences in the gut bacterial microbiota were analyzed between wild and captive in winter. Our results revealed that proportions of bacterial taxa, alpha-and beta-diversities, and relative abundances of amplicon sequence variants in the gut bacterial microbiota of the two groups differed. Firmicutes (79.46%), Bacteroidetes (16%) and Tenericutes (1.25%) were the most predominant phyla in wild red deer. While in captive red deer, Firmicutes (62.5%) was the dominant phylum, followed by Bacteroidetes (29.1%) and Tenericutes.( 3.21%). The specific function and mechanism of Tenericutes in red deer need further study. The wild red deer had higher fecal bacterial diversity than the captive in farm. These differences were attributed to the enrichment of bacterial taxa involved in the digestion of the supplementary food and to different natural diets consumed in the forest. Also the dominant and differential microflora of intestinal microflora in various populations were mined and their related metabolic pathways. In terms of functional data, most of the genes annotated are related to metabolism. The second most commented gene is related to genetic information processing. The comparative study of the intestinal flora of the two populations can not only assess the health status of the two populations, but also provide important suggestions for the breeding of captive red deer and the protection of wild populations.

Abstract:Habitat selection of red deer and roe deer was conducted an investigation in the Wandashan Mountains Heilongjiang Province during winter from 2003 to 2005, using transect censuses and stepwise discrimination analysis. The study area included logged and unlogged forest. We set systematic transect lines at intervals of more than 2 000 m. On each transect line large sample plots (10 m×10 m) were set at 50 m intervals. Five small sample plots (2 m×2 m) were set inside every larger plot. Vegetation type, food abundance, snow depth, slope degree, slope aspect, slope position, altitude, shelter class, canopy density, coverage, density, diameter at breast height (DBH), distance to human disturbance and water resource were recorded within each plot. The results revealed that there was significant difference in habitat selection between red deer and roe deer despite partly overlapping distributions. In logged forest, red deer tended to select shrub or miscellaneous tree forest on the middle or upper slopes position with sunny or semi-sunny aspect. They also preferred relatively higher altitude and abundant food that were made up of trees of smaller DBH and a higher density of shrubs. These habitats tended to be 1 000 m away from human disturbance. However roe deer preferred to live in miscellaneous tree or Mongolian Oak forest on the middle or lower slopes with a sunny aspect. They preferred relatively lower altitude and moderate food consisting of trees with larger DBH and shrubs of lower density. The roe deer was insensitive to human activities. By comparison, in the unlogged areas, the red deer selected miscellaneous tree forests with trees of relatively small DBH, relatively higher altitude and abundant food, which were 1 000 m away from human disturbance. Roe deer showed unobvious selection for distance from human activities. Polar and birch mixed forest were most often selected by roe deer.
In Vitro Digestibility of Seasonal Forages Used by Wapiti and Roe Deer in Northeastern China

Abstract:Seasonal changes in in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of five forage classes (browses, sedges, forbs. ferns and the bark of Ulmus spp.) used by wapiti and roe deer were determined in relation to chemical composition, using the two‐stage technique of in vitro trial with rumen inocula from one wapiti and one roe deer captured in winter. Wapiti and roe deer showed remarkable fluctuation in IVDMD among seasons and forage classes. IVDMD decreased from 43.8‐64.3% in spring to 29.4‐40.5% in winter for wapiti, and from 52.4‐77.4% in spring to 25.9‐36.5% in winter for roe deer. There was significant variation in IVDMD among species of browses for wapiti and roe deer. IVDMD ranged from 28.5% to 58.7% in twigs and from 39.8% to 58.2% in leaves for wapiti, and from 24.1% to 67.7% in twigs and from 40.0% to 71.7% in leaves for roe deer. Roe deer had higher IVDMD (40.0‐71.7%) in both leaves and twigs of browses than wapiti (35.9‐58.7%) during snow‐free seasons, but IVDMD of twigs was lower for roc deer (25.9‐36.5%) than wapiti (29.4‐38.4%) in winter. Significant multiple correlation was found between NDF and ADF, and IVDMD in sedges, forbs and ferns for both wapiti and roe deer, whereas only roe deer showed the significant multiple correlation for leaves of browses.
Winter Foraging of Sympatric Red Deer and Sika Deer in Northeast China: Diet Composition, Forage Selection, Bite Diameter and Browse Intensity

Abstract:Red deer (Cervus elaphus) and sika deer (C. nippon) are sympatric in certain regions in northeast China, and may have different strategies for obtaining food resources. We studied winter forage selection of sympatric red and sika deer based on their bite diameter and browse intensity in northeast China. The principal winter food items of red and sika deer were Euonymus spp. and Acer spp., and both deer showed strong selectivity for E. verrucosus, E. alatus and Populus davidiana (EI>0.85) in spite of their low availability. Red and sika deer exhibited varying bite diameters and browse intensity for different forage plant species between early and late winter. Overall, the interaction effect of season and deer species on bite diameter and browse intensity indicated that two sympatric deer used different foraging strategies to increase food intake. In late winter, sika deer may have tended to increase bite diameter to fulfill a relatively constant food intake and potential nutritional requirement, while red deer may have tended to increase browse intensity to maintain a higher forage intake. Moreover, the interaction effect of plant and deer species on bite diameter and browse intensity indicated that both deer species tend to change their bite diameter and browse intensity particularly on Euonymus spp. and Acer spp., while red and sika deer have a reversal interaction effect on coniferous browse. These patterns of forage selection in bite diameter and browse intensity of sympatric deer may reflect short-term foraging decisions of sympatric herbivores that share similar food resources.
Wintering Habitat Evaluation of Red Deer (cervus Elaphus) in Forest Area of Northeastern China

Abstract:Six ultimate factors (forage abundance, horizontal sheltering class, distance from human disturbance, snow depth, tree coverage, and edge effect) of Red deer ( Cervus elaphus ) were investigated in eastern Heilongjiang Province during winter from 1988 to 1991. On the basis of analysis of field data, we evaluated winter habitat conditions of Red deer. The results showed as follows: the wintering habitat quality of Red deer in poplar-birch stands was excellent in the Wanda Mountains, and was moderate in shrub-woods and Korean pine seed stands. According to habitat index (HI) values, the habitat quality in poplar-birch stands (HI=0.8185) was superior to that in shrub-woods (HI=0.4825) and in Korean pine seed stands (HI=0.4385). The wintering habitat quality of Red deer in the Wanda Mountains was superior to that of Dailing Forestry Region. According to the current situations of forestry areas in northeastern China, strengthening habitat management was important for the conservation and management of Red deer population in the next decades.
Tibetan red deer (Cervus canadensis wallichi) diet composition patterns and associations during lean seasons in Tibet, China

Abstract:Tibetan red deer (Cervus canadensis wallichi) in the high-altitude environment of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau could face seasonal challenges from food shortages and nutritional deficiencies but the nutritional requirements are complex. Analyzing diet composition pattern(s) is the first step to disentangle this complexity. From a systematic perspective, we hypothesize that: (A) diet composition pattern or patterns exist within the population and (B) a portion of the diet beyond characterized diet combinations will consist of random combinations. In this study, we investigated diet composition patterns of a Tibetan red deer population distributed in the Sangri Red Deer Reserve, Tibet Autonomous Region, during the harsh lean season. In March 2021 and 2022, we searched for Tibetan red deer in the reserve and collected freshly defecated samples. Diet composition at the individual level was determined using micro-histological analysis, followed by k-means clustering and co-occurrence network analysis to reveal population level diet composition patterns. Diet composition of Tibetan red deer included 14 and 19 plant species (or genera) in 2021 and 2022, respectively. K-means clustering indicated two distinct diet patterns within the population across both sampling periods. In 2021, diet composition of both clusters was dominated by Salix spp. (58.49% and 33.67%). In 2022, R. macrophylla had the highest ranking and occupied 34.83% of diet composition in the first cluster while Salix spp. (39.39%) was the most consumed food in the second cluster. Results of co-occurrence networks showed positively associated food combinations of less dominant food items, with a staple food occurring in all food item pairs in both years. However, randomness accounted for 95.83% and 93% of all food item pairs in 2021 and 2022, respectively, which implies a stable dietary complex system. The 2022 co-occurrence network displayed complex associations, while the 2021 network exhibited limited and simple associations. Our results suggest that Tibetan red deer fulfill their nutritional requirements by consuming high quantities of several food items or a balanced combination of foods with complex co-occurrence associations to overcome potential food shortages, but multilayer networks containing nutritional values and food availabilities are necessary to entangle the complexity of the dietary system.

Abstract:The gut microbiota is the largest and most complex microecosystem in animals. It is influenced by the host's dietary habits and living environment, and its composition and diversity play irreplaceable roles in animal nutrient metabolism, immunity, and adaptation to the environment. Although the gut microbiota of red deer has been studied, the composition and function of the gut microbiota in Gansu red deer ( Cervus elaphus kansuensis ), an endemic subspecies of red deer in China, has not been reported. In this study, the composition and diversity of the gut microbiome and fecal metabolomics of C. elaphus kansuensis were identified and compared for the first time by using 16S rDNA sequencing, metagenomic sequencing, and LC-MS/MS. There were significant differences in gut microbiota structure and diversity between wild and farmed C. elaphus kansuensis . The 16S rDNA sequencing results showed that the genus UCRD-005 was dominant in both captive red deer (CRD) and wild red deer (WRD). Metagenomic sequencing showed similar results to those of 16S rDNA sequencing for gut microbiota in CRD and WRD at the phylum and genus levels. 16S rDNA and metagenomics sequencing data suggested that Bacteroides and Bacillus might serve as marker genera for CRD and WRD, respectively. Fecal metabolomics results showed that 520 metabolites with significant differences were detected between CRD and WRD and most differential metabolites were involved in lipid metabolism. The results suggested that large differences in gut microbiota composition and fecal metabolites between CRD and WRD, indicating that different dietary habits and living environments over time have led to the development of stable gut microbiome characteristics for CRD and WRD to meet their respective survival and reproduction needs.

Using Snow-urine Analysis to Assess Roe Deer Nutritional Status in Different Types of Habitats during Winter

Abstract:Snow-urine analysis has provided a new reliable avenue to assess ungulates nutritional status on northern ranges during winter. In this paper, snow-urine analysis was used to analyze 50 samples of roe deer (Caproelus caproelus) urines and their urines deposited in snow to assess their nutritional status and its changes in Xiaodong Forest Region and Sanjiang Nature Reserve during winter seasons of 1999 and 2000. Results indicated that urines deposited in snow can be analyzed biochemically for urea nitrogen (UN), creatinine (CT), sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) to reflect roe deer's nutritional status. Low ratio of urea nitrogen to creatinine (UN: CT < 4), potassium to creatinine (K: CT) and sodium to creatinine (Na: CT) indicated that roe deers in these two areas remained in an early phase of undernutrition, while roe deers in Sanjiang Nature Reserve during winter season of 2000 were in relatively good condition, which reflected the immediate dynamics relationships between dietary intake, fat depletion and protein catabolism. Under low crude protein and energy content of natural vegetation, and low digestibility of browse during early undernutrition phase, roe deer relied primarily on diet and lipid reserves to partially meet energy requirements, while endogenous protein nitrogen was spared and catabolism was minimal. To make compensation for changes in dietary nitrogen content to some extent, most of the urea nitrogen, K, Na, etc. were reabsorbed in the renal tubules and little was lost in the urine. Subadult and juvenile roe deers in these two areas almost remained in a prolonged-reversible phase of undernutrition characterized by UN: CT > 4 the same as roe deers in Sanjiang Nature Reserve during winter season of 1999.
Morphology and Food Particles Distribution of the Digestive Tract of Roe Deer During Winter

Abstract:14 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus)were shot in Xiaodong Forest Region of Tonghe County, Heilongjiang Province during winter season of 1999. Morphological and structural features of digestive tracts were measured by anatomical methods, and food particles distribution in the digestive tracts were analyzed by a wet-sieving procedure. The rumen tissue weight accounted for 71.3±2.6% of total stomach, followed by abomasum (11.5±2.2%), omasum(9.7±2.3%) and reticulum (7.6±0.9%). The most numerous, best developed and largest papillae were found in the cranioventral floor of the atrium of the rumen, and the papillary surface enlargement factor was significantly higher than other sampling sites (P0.05), the cranioventral floor of the atrium of the rumen is the one of most important digestive and absorptive sites. The reticulo-omasal orifice had an important role in controlling the food particles passing on to the lower digestive tract. The large-sized particles were reduced in size by rumination and microbial fermentation in the reticulo-rumen, the smaller particles produced eventually passed through the reticulo-omasal orifice. The proportion of large-sized particles (1.00 mm) was highest in reticulo-rumen (35.06±10.76%), which declined quickly in the lower digestive tract. The small-sized particles (1.00 mm) increased significantly in omasum, abomasum and other lower digestive tract. 1.00 mm is the critical particle size for roe deer during winter. Roe deer is adapted to poor quality food nutrients during the winter season and the morphology of its digestive tract is geared to an adaptive strategy that increases capacity of food particles in reticulorumen and narrowed reticulo-omasal orifice to increase the retention time of fibrous digesta particles in the reticulorumen with a greater time for fermentation and comminution to better satisfy the seasonal energy requirement.

Abstract:Stomach wall samples from 12 Chinese roe deer (Capreolus capreolus bedfordi THOMAS 1908)were measured and the surface enlargement factor of their absorptive ruminal mucosa was calculated. The results were compared with similar roe deer investigation results from Germany aud Poland. The results show a comparative trend and indicate nutritional status and habitat forage quality.
