Engineering Applications of Computational Fluid Mechanics

Abstract:The curved tidal channel, Luotou Deep-water Navigational Channel, is the main channel of the Ningbo Zhoushan Port, which is ranked first in the world. Tidal dynamics in the channel are spatially and temporally asymmetric. In this study, the three-dimensional tidal dynamics in the channel were analyzed using field data and simulated using FVCOM. The results show that the tides in the channel flood/ebb along the northern/southern bank near the bottom/surface layer and these asymmetries are due to the imbalanced Coriolis force, centrifugal force, sea-level gradient, and density gradient. Residual current velocity peaks (0.7 m/s) in the middle of the channel as the same distribution as sediment flux. There are two high turbidity zones (>4 kg/m(3)) which are northern at flood than at an ebb in the channel. The drag reduction effect of fluid mud enhances the lateral circulation, which is strong near the Chuanshan Peninsula and frictional dissipation plays an important role in it. The presence of suspended sediment changes the contribution of acceleration terms through impacting density and bottom friction, and the centrifugal force term has the largest increases. This study provides the foundation for the morphology evolution and harbor management of macro-tidal turbid coastal zones.
Fluid Mud Dynamics and Its Correlation to Hydrodynamics in Jiaojiang River Estuary, China

Abstract:The Jiaojiang Estuary is a macro-tidal estuary with high turbidity and funnel-shaped geomorphology. Estuarine geomorphology and shipping are highly affected by sediments and heavy coastal engineering. Based on observed data and numerical simulation results, we studied the characteristics of the suspended sediments and fluid mud in the estuary. By considering two-way coupling of water–sediment density and the process of fine sediment flocculation, a three-dimensional sediment model of the Jiaojiang Estuary was established and effectively calibrated using the measured data on tides, currents, and suspended sediment concentration (SSC). Field data analysis indicated that SSC and sediment transport rate in both the main tidal channel and shoals were positively correlated with the flow velocity in the low-frequency part during both the spring and neap tides. The model results revealed that the net sediment flux is controlled by advection and moves landward upstream of the main tidal channel. Fluid mud is formed near Haimen station, with tides influencing the spatial and temporal variations in its thickness and speed. Sediment is actively exchanged among fluid mud-water-seabed, with sink and source processes dominating near the bay mouth and the Haimen station, respectively. Sediments weaken the seaward residual currents slightly by changing their viscosity and the von Karman constant, and the stratification process is affected by changes in water density. The findings of this study provide a foundation for the study of material transportation in an estuarine ecosystem.
Dynamics of Sediment Transport and Stratification in Changjiang River Estuary, China

Abstract:Suspended sediment transport and stratification in the entire Changjiang River Estuary were examined using the field data of sea-surface level, currents, salinity, and suspended sediment concentration (SSC). The data were simultaneously observed at one-hour intervals and at six vertical layers at 23 stations covering two spring tidal cycles in May, 2004. The results showed that ebbing tides had a longer tidal duration and stronger tidal currents than flooding tides, due to a fresh water discharge. The tidal range reached about 4 m and the peak tidal current of about 2.9 m/s occurred in the north passage in the observed period. A stratification caused by salinity and suspended sediment appeared and varied with tides indicated by the overall Richardson number. The potential energy anomaly was larger when SSC was factored in to the water density. A stratification ratio (S-r), which is the ratio of potential energy required to induce complete mixing to the overall potential energy, was proposed to measure the degree of sediment stratification. S-r values indicated that mixing the stratified turbid water took as much as 0.25% of the overall potential energy at a particular field station. A turbidity maximum zone (TMZ) was observed in the north passage, where the salt-fresh-water interface and stratification appeared, due to the advective and tidal transport component. The main components controlling the vertical-averaged net sediment transport were the Eulerian velocity, Stokes drift and tidal pumping. Salinity intrusion creates the stratification in the north passage, which depresses the turbulence and re-suspension of sediment. The stratification is further enhanced by the vertical distribution of suspended sediment, which results in a TMZ and induces sediment deposition/trapping in the channel. Hence, the SSC was essential to be considered in the study of estuarine stratification, particularly in the highly turbid estuaries.
Study on the Transport Mechanism of Suspended Sediment in Yueqing Bay

Abstract:According to the measured field data in Yueqing Bay,the transport flux of suspended sediment in observed stations is divided into several dynamic items using the mechanism decomposition method,and the space-time distributional characteristics of suspended sediment transport is examined.It is indicated that the tidal pumping effect plays an important role in the bay and especially has a clear superiority in shallow regions.The vertical circulation causes prominent sediment transport in middle and inner bay during neap season,and the advection is the primary factor for sediment transport in deeper channels and open regions.Meanwhile,the dynamic mechanism of main items is discussed in terms of residual current distribution,the phase relationship between velocity and sediment concentration,the vertical residual current structure and the vertical gradient of sediment concentration.The conclusions could be made as following:(1) The Euler residual current effect is correlated positively with tidal power.(2) The tidal trapping effect has close linked with tidal dissymmetry,bottom sediment resuspended and the background concentration difference between spring and ebb tide.(3) The development of Lagrange vertical residual current and the vertical gradient of suspend sediment concentration are responsible for the net vertical circulation transport.

Abstract:Tidal flats provide a foundation for biological diversity and marine economy. Xiangshan Bay is a semi-enclosed bay that shelters large areas of tidal flats, and is known for its aquaculture. In this study, field trips were conducted in late autumn to measure the water level, current, water temperature, tidal flat temperature, and turbidity data of the tidal flat in the bay during Typhoon Lingling. The field data were well calibrated and used to investigate the hydrodynamics, temperature, and turbidity of the tidal flat. The results showed that the spring-neap tidal cycles at the sea surface level were well captured at both stations. The maximum tidal range was 5.5 m and 1.5 m during spring and neap tides, respectively. The tidal flat was occasionally exposed to air occasionally (30 min). The current velocity (<0.2 m/s) and waves (<0.15 m) at the field stations were weak, and the direction of flow was controlled by the geomorphology, even during Typhoon Lingling. Water was more turbid at station S2 (<0.8 kg/m3) than at station S1 (<0.2 kg/m3). The sea water temperature and tidal flat temperature were affected by tidal cycles, with larger variations occurring during spring tides than during neap tides. The maximum value of seawater temperature at S1 station was greater than that at station S2 during spring tides. The intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) of sea water temperature and surface tidal flat temperature were similar, as they are both subject to sea-air-tidal flat interactions. The IMFs of the middle and bottom layers in the tidal flat were less correlated. Temperature fluctuations in seawater and tidal flats were mainly affected by air temperature and tides. Small-scale features (>0.5 Hz) were important for water and tidal flat temperatures, particularly during typhoons. These findings provide field data for future studies on eco-hydrology and coastal engineering in tidal flats.

Abstract:Changjiang River Estuary (CRE), as one of the largest fluvial estuarine systems worldwide, experiences great changes in river discharges, sediment loads and geomorphology, due to heavy anthropogenic activities. The contribution of sediments to stratification in CRE was examined by analyzing the field data of sea surface level, current, salinity, suspended sediment concentration (SSC) and sediment grain size. The data were simultaneously observed at 1-h intervals and six vertical layers at 10 stations during the low-river discharge period from January 11 to 19, 2016. During this winter period, the asymmetric tides at all the field stations had longer ebb durations. The tidal range in the north branch became the largest among all the stations. The tidal phase inside the north branch was more delayed than that in the south branch, due to the effect of the local bathymetry and coastlines. Currents and bed sediments impacted SSC through changing bottom friction and viscosity, and then impacted water stratification subsequently through modulating water density. Net sediment flux was mostly seaward during the entire spring-neap tidal cycle, because of the Eulerian velocity and tidal pumping effect. Turbidityinduced stratification accounts for more than 50% of the total stratification during spring tides.
Research on the suspended sediment simulation for the Luotou strait of Zhoushan Islands area

Abstract:This paper presents a 2D tidal current and suspended sediment model which takes the Luotou strait as the key research area.The model was eadopted to carry out numerical simulation of suspended sediment movement in the Luotou strait area in January in 2005.A good agreement was found between the observation data and computed results.Analyses on the computed results showed that the sediment concentration was decreased from the west to the east of the Luotou strait,and there were two opposite trends of the net sediment transport in the strait because of the difference between the main stream of the flood and ebb tidal current,but the total net sediment transport direction in the strait was the ebb tidal current direction.There was a good correlation of the sediment concentration and the process of flood and ebb current,which meant that the advective sediment transport was the major function of the sediment transport in the strait and made the Luotou strait the main channel of sediment transport from the Yangtze River estuary and Hangzhou Bay.to the open sea.
Vertical Sediment Distribution Mechanism in Tidal Flats -A Case Study in Zhoushan Archipelago

Abstract:Tidal flats connect terrestrial and oceanic environments, and play an important role in the evolution of coastal ecosystems and geomorphology. Taking tidal flat on Zhairuoshan Island (ZRS) as an example, we studied the dynamic characteristics of suspended sediment concentration (SSC), sediment resuspension, and transportation in tidal flats. The field data of the waves, currents, and sediments were obtained from the tidal flat on the east of ZRS Island. The results show that current-induced bed shear stress is dominant. Under the combined action of waves, tides, and currents, SSC has two main periods (12.2 h, 6.2 h, 60-80%) and three minor periods (23.5 h, 8.2 h, and 5.1 h, 20-40%). Advection transport is dominant, at approximately 2-3 times the sediment resuspension, and the net sediment flux is onshore. Turbulent intermittent events play an important role in sediment resuspension, and their probability is affected by velocity. The vertical instantaneous transport of sediment depends on wave height. The vertical profile of SSC shows that, at high current velocity, the sedimentation formula that considers flocculation better fits the vertical profile of suspended sediment using the Rouse formula. The settling velocity of a single particle fits better at low current velocities, indicating that the flocculation of sediment is weak at low velocities. This study improves our understanding on near-bottom sediment characteristics and controlling mechanism in tidal flat in muddy coasts.
Responses of Water Environment to Tidal Flat Reduction in Xiangshan Bay: Part II Locally Re-Suspended Sediment Dynamics

Abstract:Xiangshan Bay is a semi-enclosed bay in China, in which tidal flats have been substantially reclaimed to support the development of local economies and society over previous decades. The loss of tidal flats has led to changes of tides and locally suspended sediment in the bay. The effects of tidal flat reduction on locally suspended sediment dynamics was investigated using a numerical model forced by tidal data and calibrated by observed tidal elevation and currents. The model satisfactorily reproduces observed water levels, currents, and suspended sediment concentration in the estuary, and therefore is subsequently applied to analyze the impact of tidal flat reclamation on locally suspended sediment transport. After the loss of the tidal flats from 1963 to 2010, the suspended sediment concentrations (SSC) at the bottom boundary layer were reduced/increased in the outer bay/tidal flat areas due to weakened tidal currents. In the inner bay, the SSC values near the bottom level increased from 1963 to 2003 due to the narrowed bathymetry, and then decreased from 2003 to 2010 because of the reduced tidal prism. The model scenarios suggest that: (1) a reduction of tidal flat areas appears to be the main factor for enhancing the transport of sediments up-estuary, due to the increased Eulerian velocity and tidal pumping; (2) A reduction of tidal flat areas impacts on spatial and temporal SSC distribution: reducing the SSC values in the water areas due to the reduced current; and (3) a tidal flat reduction influences the net sediment fluxes: lessening the erosion and inducing higher/lower landward/seaward sediment transportation.
Characteristics of Tidal Flat Sediment at Different Ecologic Zones, North Jiangsu Province

Abstract:In this paper, the surface and core sediment samples were collected in Xinyanggang Bay, north Jiangsu Province, and their grain size parameters i.e. mean grain size, sorting coefficient and skewness were calculated. The characteristics of horizontal and vertical distribution of sediment and the deposition influenced by vegetation were also discussed, the results indicated that: the sediments of silt flat were coarser than spartina anglica flat, Artemisia schrenkiana flat, spartina anglica- Artemisia schrenkiana mixing flat and reed flat. The lower silt flat sediment frequency distribution curve was bimodality, whereas the sediments of the upper silt flat and other ecologic zone of the whole tidal flat were unimodal. The influence of hydrodynamic on sediments was also indicated by the grain sizes distribution pattern from land to sea.The spartina anglica controlled the develop of silt and Artemisia schrenkiana flat, and not only decided the bed material of Artemisia schrenkiana flat, but also continuously reformed the characteristics of silt flat sediment. The periodical change in the tidal condition, tidal current asymmetry, vegetation influence, and deposition combined with evolution discrepancy of the tidal flat caused the difference of variation intensity of sensitivity components of the core sediments which located at different ecologic zone.
Sand‐Mud Tidal Flat Morphodynamics Influenced by Alongshore Tidal Currents

Abstract:Tidal flats, where significant land-ocean interactions take place, are often abstracted as a cross-shore bed profile with sediment zonation from the lower sand flat to the upper mud flat. However, in addition to cross-shore tidal currents, the impact of the alongshore components on cross-shore sediment transport, morphological evolution, and sediment grain-size change remains unclear. Here we investigated sand-mud tidal flat morphodynamics in the absence of waves by combining approaches of field observations, numerical modeling, and analytical interpretations, based on the example of the tidal flat on the central Jiangsu coast, China. The results show that the morphodynamic processes are complicated by the interactions of cross-shore and alongshore tidal currents, cross-shore flat morphology, and sediment zonation. With amplified phase lags of the alongshore tidal level at the boundaries, alongshore currents become dominant over cross-shore tidal currents on the lower flat, while the upper flat is always dominated by the cross-shore currents. Therefore, bed profiles and mud content on the upper flat were independent of the alongshore tidal current magnitude, being convex-up and consisting of mud. In contrast, the strong alongshore currents can erode mud on the lower flat and promote landward sand transport from the subtidal area to the lower flat, forming a sand flat. The maximum tidal bed shear stress is almost spatially uniform across the muddy area but pronouncedly elevated where the bed sediment coarsens on the lower flat. The contributions of the alongshore tidal currents and sand-mud sorting processes should be appropriately addressed in similar coastal environments. Plain Language Summary Taking the example of the tidal flat on the central Jiangsu coast, China, we investigated sand-mud tidal flat morphodynamics through field observations, numerical modeling, and analytical interpretations. We found that the cross-shore and alongshore tidal currents, cross-shore bed profiles, and sediment zonation interact as a complicated system, in which alongshore tidal currents play an important role in cross-shore morphodynamics. Through interaction with the cross-shore current, strong alongshore currents transport sand landward from sub-tidal flat, forming a sandy lower flat, and the maximum tidal bed shear stress becomes much larger than on the muddy upper flat. This study improves our understanding of sediment dynamics and morphological evolution of tidal flats under the influence of alongshore tidal currents.

Abstract:<p>Understanding sediment sorting and bedding dynamics has high value to unravelling the mechanisms underlying geomorphological, geological, ecological and environmental imprints of tidal wetlands and hence to predicting their future changes. Using the Nanhui tidal flat on the Changjiang (Yangtze) Delta, China, as a reference site, this study establishes a schematized morphodynamic model coupling flow, sediment dynamics and bed level change to explore the processes that govern sediment sorting and bedding phenomena. Model results indicate an overall agreement with field data in terms of tidal current velocities, SSCs, deposition thicknesses and sedimentary structures. Depending on the variation of tidal current strength, sand-dominated layers (SDLs) and mud-dominated layers (MDLs) tend to form during spring and neap tides, respectively. Thinner tidal couplets are developed during daily-scale flood-ebb variations. A larger tidal level variation during a spring-neap tidal cycle, associated with a stronger tidal current variation, favours the formation of SDLs and tidal couplets. A larger boundary sediment supply generally promotes the formation of tidal bedding, though the bedding detail is partially dependent on the SSC composition of different sediment types. Sediment properties, including e.g. grain size and settling velocity, are also found to influence sediment sorting and bedding characteristics. In particular, finer and coarser sediment respond differently to spring and neap tides. During neap tides, relatively small flow velocities favour the deposition of finer sediment, with limited coarser sediment being transported to the upper tidal flat because of the larger settling velocity. During spring tides, larger flow velocities transport more coarser sediment to the upper tidal flat accounting for distinct lamination formation. Model results are qualitatively consistent with field observations, but the role of waves, biological processes and alongshore currents need to be included in further studies to establish a more complete understanding.</p>

Physical and Sedimentary Processes on the Tidal Flat of Central Jiangsu Coast, China: Headland Induced Tidal Eddies and Benthic Fluid Mud Layers

Abstract:An 11-tidal-cycle record time series of current, wave, suspended-sediment, and bed-level characteristics was analyzed to identify physical and sedimentary processes on the tidal flat of Jiangsu Coast, China. A tripod observation system was placed near the transition between mid and upper tidal flat south of a newly constructed harbor for hydrodynamic and sediment dynamic measurements from 27 Apr 2013 to 3 May 2013. The observations confirm the stable longshore northward (ebb direction) current s with residual velocities similar to 59.2 anti-clockwise from the offshore direction. This phenomenon can be attributed to the effects of headland (the Harbor) induced tidal eddies based on comparable frictional length scale and the headland length scale. Benthic fluid mud layers occurred in 2 of 11 tidal cycles, with the conditions of strong waves during the flood phase. The fine sediment was resuspended by the waves and currents from the lower area, transported upward and concentrated at the observation station, resulting in the formation of a fluid mud layer with thickness of similar to 15 cm and SSC of similar to 8 kg/m(3) at 10 cm asb. Once formed, the fluid mud layer dramatically modified the flow structure, showing a large reduction of current speed from 20 cm asb to 10 cm asb, when the gradient Richardson number was around the critical value of 0.25, inferring that sufficient turbulence from waves and currents exists to maintain fluid mud suspension. The fluid mud processes appear to occur episodically and may play an important role of sediment dynamics on the tidal flat.
Hydrodynamics and Sediment Transport Patterns on Intertidal Flats along Middle Jiangsu Coast

Abstract:Two field campaigns in Dafeng and Jianggang were organized to compare spatial variations of hydrodynamic characteristics and sediment transport patterns on intertidal flats of different types with distinct human interferences along middle Jiangsu coast, China. The major contributors to the different patterns of sediment dynamics between the two tidal flats were offshore tidal current field and human interference. Offshore tidal force provide the basic setup of tidal current patterns on tidal flats, which is then modified by local morphology. Seawalls parallel to coast reduce tidal flat width, forcing tidal energy to dissipate within a shorter distance and thus influencing tidal flat morphology. Seawalls vertical to coast and major tidal current significantly reduce tidal current speed, which favors sediment deposition on tidal flats. Two seawalls built on both sides of the observational tidal flat profile caused much reduced current speed at Dafeng tidal flat, comparing to the offshore station. Being exposed to offshore radial tidal currents, hydrodynamics at Jianggang was much stronger than that at Dafeng. Residual currents at both areas showed net landward transport at the lower flat and net seaward transport at the upper flat, in favor to sediment accumulation at the middle flat. Sediment flux over tidal cycles showed net landward sediment transport at Dafeng, and net seaward transport at Jianggang, consistent with the convex-up accretion-dominated profile observed at Dafenge, and concave-up erosion-dominated profile observed at Jianggang. The instantaneons sediment flux changed significantly due to variations in velocity and sediment concentrations, but these terms counteracted with each other within tidal cycles, leading to the dominant role of Eulerian flux in determining net sediment flux over tidal cycles.

Abstract:The sand ridges field in Jiangsu coastal area has been the key region of tidal flat reclamation, waterway regulation and port construction. Adopting the hydrological and sediment data in winter, the tidal patterns were revealed. In addition, the depth-averaged velocity, sediment grain size and sediment concentration in each station were analyzed and compared in detail. The result shows that the tidal in study area is regular semidiurnal and diurnal inequality. The velocity has a decreasing tendency with the Tiaozini water area being centered towards the surrounding areas. The grain size gradually decreases and then increases from north to south, while the sediment concentration gradually increases and then decreases from north to south.

Abstract:Grain size distributions of seabed and suspended sediment samples from several sites on the Dafeng tidalflat,northern Jiangsu coast,collected in July and August of 2002 and 2003,were analyzed.The results show that the seabed-sediment can be divided into different types from lower to upper parts of the flat in terms of grain size parameters;the sources and mode of sediment movement of the seabed sediment(consisting of suspended material and/or bed-load) and the saltmarsh vegetation are the main factors to influence the spatial distributions of seabed sediment.Two types of grain size distributions of suspended sediment according to the temporal-spatial variations during the tidal cycle can be identified.One is the stability type with small variations;the other is the type associated with a double-peak characteristic in the grain size distribution curve,with remarkable variations.The main factors that affect the grain size distributions of suspended sediment include localized resuspension and settling process,suspended sediment transported onto tidal flats during the flood phase of the tide,and the spatial distribution pattern of seabed sediment.The difference in gain size distribution between the seabed and suspended sediments is significant.The relationship between the two distributions can be explained by resuspension and settling processes.

Abstract:Characteristics of sediment dynamics in many small and medium sized estuaries have great significance for geomorphologic evolution.Xinyanggang Estuary is a typical small and medium sized estuary with sluice gate which locates on the muddy coast of Jiangsu Plain.This article studies the characteristics of suspended sediment and its response to sediment resuspension through the data from field observation of three mooring ships in Xinyanggang Estuary.The result shows that the suspended sediment concentration(SSC)changes significantly during tides,SSC during ebb tides and the opening of tidal sluice is higher than other periods,and increases gradually from estuary to the tidal sluice,and the highest average SSC reaches to 1.45 g·L-1 .The vertical distribution of SSC during typical time of tides keeps with‘L type’,which the SSC between surface and bottom differentiates greatly.The water mixes well and vertical SSC changes evenly during the period of fresh water runoff.The average grain size of suspended sediment ranges from 5μm to 10μm,and the main component is silt with an average percentage higher than 70. There exists bottom sediment resuspension during tides and the highest resuspension flux ranges from 10-4 kg·m-2·s-1 to 10-3 kg·m-2·s-1 ,which decreases gradually from the estuary to the tidal sluice.The sediment grain size coarsens differently during the resuspension and the content of sand would increase in the component.Part of the suspended sediment of station S1 and S3 comes from bottom sediment resuspension while with that derives from ad-vection transport in station S2.

Abstract:The supply of fine-grained sediments from the old Yellow River delta and the offshore radial tidal sand ridges has resulted in the formation of extensive tidal flats on the central Jiangsu coast,with characteristic deposition rates of 1-5 cm·a-1 over the intertidal zone.Using the Wanggang coast as a case study area,suspended sediment transport is evaluated by numerical experimental methods.Based on the sediment continuity equation,the horizontal distribution pattern of the deposition rate over the tidal flat is derived.The analytical results show that,under the given conditions for the numerical experiments,rapid accretion by fine-grained sediment occurs on the upper tidal flat,with the deposition rate being of the same order of magnitude as the observed values.Furthermore,the deposition rate is shown to decrease in response to a reduction of suspended sediment concentration in offshore waters;a critical suspended sediment concentration representing the transformation from accretion to erosion is estimated to be 0.4 kg·m-3 .These observations imply that if the sediment supply is cut off,then the profile of the tidal flat will not remain stable.Therefore,although the central Jiangsu coastlines are still advancing towards the sea at the present stage,there is a risk of coastal recession in the near future because of reduced sediment supply,which may become a new challenge for coastal defense and ecosystem reconstruction.

Abstract:Fine sediment can be transported by marine processes in the form of suspended load,resulting in coastal and inner shelf erosion and accumulation.The system of the abandoned Huanghe delta to the middle Jiangsu tidal flat is idealized area for the study of the process-product issues of source-sink systems.The abandoned Huanghe delta suffering severe erosion is the source part of the system.And the fine sediments suspended by the tidal and continental circulation currents were transported alongshore and finally sinked on the middle Jiangsu tidal flat.At the present study,vertical profiles of current velocities,turbidity and salinity were measured on an hourly basis of 25 hours at two stations on the inner shelf out of the Xinyanggang,Jiangsu Coast.The observation results show that, the inner 6 km area of the shelf is characterized by high suspended sediment concentration and the strong southward suspended sediment fluxes.However,the suspended sediment concentration and the suspended sediment flux are reduced to 1/3 and less 1/10,respectively,at the station about 12 km away from the coast.The southward net sediment flux is estimated as about 4.60 × 108 kg per day with the winter spring tide condition,which can be compared with the erosion mass of the north part of Jiangsu Coast.

Abstract:To speculate about the hydrodynamic process and sediment transport within the intertidal zone,we con-ducted a two-day survey in the Eastern Chongming Island in April,2014 during a spring tide.Four tripods were deployed in three main morphological domains:one in the salt marshes,one in the mudflats and two in the tidal creeks.Our results show that:(1)the median particle size of surficial sediment in the creeks is 21.7 μm and is fi-ner than that in the salt marshes and mudflats which is 33.0 μm.The particle size of suspended sediment decreases landward;(2)the dominant currents are rectilinear currents in the tidal creeks while are often rotational flows in the flats.The average vertical velocity in the lateral,creek,salt marsh,and mudflat is 15.4 cm/s,34.6 cm/s, 11.3 cm/s,and 28.9 cm/s,respectively;(3)the highest suspended sediment concentration appears in the early flood periods in the tidal creeks while occurs during slack water or in the middle of the ebb periods in the flats.The suspended sediment in the tidal creeks mostly derives from adjacent sea rather than resuspension which is the main suspended sediment source in the flats;(4)over a tidal cycle,net landward sediment transport is observed in the creeks and the average sediment flux per tidal cycle could be 4.0 t/m.There is also a net import of sediment with 1.0 t/m per tidal cycle driven through the salt marsh.On the contrary,the net sediment flux in the mudflat is sea-ward along the creek and the dominant sediment transport in the mudflat is perpendicular to the creek rather than along the creek which the lateral,creek and salt marsh are.Our results also indicate that the salt marshes experi-ence deposition while the mudflats are eroded in our study site.
