Abstract:Water is higher turbidity and turbidity maximum occurs in the Jiaojiang Estuary. Typical concentration profile is often present in turbidity maximum. There is three order of magnitude range in concentration from the surface to the seabed, i. e. mobile suspended layer, lutocline and fluid mud. It is noted that three layers in concentration vertical profile develops the most clear during neap tide in winter. Lutoclines are defined as pronounced "step" in the vertical concentration profile with sharp variation in the concentration. Lutoclines can also occur in the mobile suspension layer. However it occurred upper fluid mud, which is obvious and remains relative stability. Its genesis, growth and decay are governed by processes of turbulence mixing and gravitational setting, as a result of comprehensive action between flocculent setting and hindered setting. Suspended matter concentration ranges 1.8 kg/m3 to 4.0 kg/m3 within transit zone between flocculent setting and hindered settling where setting velocity is the fastest. The setting sediment can't immediately reach the seabed in the processes of flocculent setting. A great deal of floccus are traped upper fluid mud resulting in lutocline development. It is found that lutoclines develop in vertical profile when concentration of suspended matter ≥ 3 kg/m3, salinity ranging 4∼16 and morderate mixing in the waters. It can act as a density interface which sets up a barrier on the fluid mud resulting in complex mixing settling processes.
