Abstract:The measurement system of the Earth magnetic field for pico-satellites is presented.It analyzes the various factors affecting the measurement accuracy of the magnetometer and improves its accuracy by set/reset pulses,signal processing and bridge offset voltage compensation.In order to measure the actual value of the earth magnetic field and test the dynamic response of the magnetometer,the relevant experiments are executed.The result shows that the measurement error of the system can reach as low as 10-8 Tesla,and the system can work well in the condition of spinning on the speed of 10°/s,which proves that the design can meet the requirements of pico-satellites.

Abstract:The adjustable strength permanent magnet quadrupoles used in this study were designed and manufactured at the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC). The permanent magnet quadrupole had a bore radius of 3.5 mm and an effective length of 50 mm. It was based on SmCo blocks and provided an effective gradient field from 325 Tm to 355 Tm. Typical methods for measuring the magnetic-field performance of quadrupole magnets are the stretched-wire and rotating coil measurement systems. A pulsed-wire measurement (PWM) system was used to measure the magnetic fields of an in-vacuum undulator at the NSRRC. The PWM system provides quick measurements of the magnetic fields and is easy to install on any permanent accelerator magnet. In this work, a PWM system was used to measure the magnetic-field integrals and the multipole errors of quadrupole magnets. Comparison was made of the magnetic field results obtained with PWM and stretched-wire measurement methods.

Abstract:Measurement techniques for strong pulsed electric field play key roles in electromagnetic com- patibility design of high-intensity accelerator system,measurement of nuclear electromagnetic pulse (NEMP),study of lightning electromagnetic pulse (LEMP) effect and electromagnetic radiation measure- ment in high voltage power lines and high-power switch.The validity of measurement result will influence the correctness of theoretical research and system design directly.This article reviews the development of measurement techniques for strong pulsed electric field systematically,two of which used commonly, namely active electro-optic sensor and passive electro-optic sensor based on Pockels effect,are analyzed and compared in detail.It is proposed that development of the measurement systems should aim at the following aspects,such as improving stability,minimizing probes,adopting passive sensors,increasing sensitivity,making signal processing,maintenance and usage more convenient,actualizing standard tests easily,etc.Moreover,detailed measurement skills are studied,such as shielding,signal partition,feature extraction and so on,which contributes to the precise measurement in real circumstance.

Abstract:Ultrasonic measurements at high magnetic fields and low temperatures necessitate ultrafast excitations, ultrahigh dynamic range of duty-cycle adjustments, and real-time, precise, and automatic analysis. This article proposes a dual-mode ultrasonic measurement system, which means the capability of carrying out acoustic measurements in both pulsed and static high magnetic fields with low temperatures. Based on the “counter-delay-chain” series structure and adaptive jitter compensation in the field-programmable gate array (FPGA), the timing control accuracy of 5 ns and the timing jitter below 160 ps are realized for high-resolution excitation generation and precise sampling window adjustment. The duty cycle adjustment achieves a high dynamic range from 0.23 ppb to 10% to realize both pulsed field mode and static field mode (denoted as PF mode and SF mode) ultrasonic measurements. The independent sampling window adjustment reduces the data size by more than 80%, extends the maximum testing duration, and reduces the analysis consumption. Combined with the automatic cross-correlation analysis method, this system can automatically carry out PF-mode tests with a repetition rate above 100 kHz and SF-mode tests for hours with a sound velocity error of 2%. Experiments have proved the reliability and feasibility of the system and revealed its application prospect in condensed matter physics experiments. This integrated automated measurement system can flexibly switch measurement modes and control parameters, thus adapting to the diverse measurement needs of cutting-edge physics experiments and industrial fields.

Abstract:The Shanghai high-repetition-rate X-ray free-electron laser and extreme light facility (SHINE) operates at a maximum repetition rate of 1 MHz. Kicker magnets are key components that distribute electron bunches into three different undulator lines in a bunch-by-bunch mode. The kicker field width must be less than the time interval between bunches. A lumped-inductance kicker prototype was developed using a vacuum chamber with a single-turn coil. The full magnetic field strength was 0.005 T. This paper presents the requirements, design considerations, design parameters, magnetic field calculations, and measurements of the kicker magnets. The relevant experimental results are also presented. The pulse width of the magnetic field was approximately 600 ns, and the maximum operation repetition rate was 1 MHz. The developed kicker satisfies the requirements for the SHINE project. Finally, numerous recommendations for the future optimization of kicker magnets are provided.

Abstract:The close of high voltage switch in pulsed power system of linear induction accelerator often radiates strong transient electric field,which may influence ambient sensitive electric equipments,signals and performance of other instruments,etc.By performing gridded measurement around the Marx generator,the general distribution law and basic characters of electric field radiation are summarized.The current signal of the discharge circuit is also measured,which demonstrates that the current and the radiated electric field both have a resonance frequency about 150 kHz,and contain much higher frequency components.

Abstract:The undulator is the core device for producing high-energy synchrotron radiation light in Synchrotron Radiation and Free Electron Laser facilities. The long-term operation of the undulator is bound to be damaged by radiation. Furthermore, this radiation damage leads to the reduction or even demagnetization of the magnetic field, directly affecting the electron beam's operating state and the light's performance and stability. This magnetic measurement system aims to monitor the magnetic flux change to obtain the undulator's local magnetic field disturbance or decay. Moreover, this system provides a way to get phase errors and electron trajectories by estimating the half-period magnetic field integrals for each magnetic pole. The measurement experiments on the undulator in SSRF are in progress.

Abstract:The precise knowledge of the magnetic field produced by dipole magnets is critical to the operation of a synchrotron. Real-time measurement systems may be required, especially in the case of iron-dominated electromagnets with strong non-linear effects, to acquire the magnetic field and feed it back to various users. This work concerns the design and implementation of a new measurement system of this kind currently being deployed throughout the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) accelerator complex. We first discuss the measurement principle, the general system architecture and the technology employed, focusing in particular on the most critical and specialized components developed, that is, the field marker trigger generator and the magnetic flux integrator. We then present the results of a detailed metrological characterization of the integrator, including the aspects of drift estimation and correction, as well as the absolute gain calibration and frequency response. We finally discuss the latency of the whole acquisition chain and present an outline of future work to improve the capabilities of the system.

Abstract:Measurement results of transverse magnetic field of an optical klystron have been given, including the distribution on an axis, magnetic field uniformity`and integrated field distribution. The random errors and harmonic magnetic field were analyzed and the integrated multipoles field was calculated. The influence of non-zero integrated field on close orbit of electron and the operation parameter of storage ring were discussed.

Abstract:As a widely recognized emittance measurement technique, the Q-scanning method typically plays a crucial role in the commissioning process of accelerator-based beam injectors. The Q-magnet, being a pivotal component, significantly influences the measurement capability, thus warranting detailed examination in this study. By reassessing the measurement outcomes of the Q-magnet, the impact of fringe fields on emittance measurement precision is thoroughly scrutinized within this framework. Subsequently, corrections to the transfer matrices of the Q-scanning system under different excitation currents are implemented by revisiting fundamental beam optic principles. Moreover, virtual measurements via both theoretical calculations and beam dynamics simulations are conducted to validate these corrections, utilizing the setup of an existing beam injector established at Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Both the theoretical and experimental results indicate that the measurement accuracy of the Q-scanning technique can be improved by correcting the fringe field effects.

Abstract:Pulsed wire method is based on the principle that a pulse-carrying wire would be deformed in a magnetic field by the Lorenz force.Detected by displacement sensors,the deformation could be regarded as the effect on the electron beam passing through the same field.The method is mainly used for performance measurement and emendation of magnetic device with inner cavity magnetic field device of small gap and large length/diameter ratio.The basic principle of pulsed wire method for magnetic field measurement is introduced with a typical theoretical model.The definition of magnetic field integral along the length axis is cited.The physical meanings of the first and second magnetic field integration are indicated.The development of related research by different groups has been overviewed.The limitations and the possible development trend are discussed.

Abstract:Soft magnetic materials play a key role in developing integrated and miniaturized power electronics. However, it is still challenging to accurately evaluate the high-frequency (MHz) power loss of soft magnetic materials, which determines the energy efficiency of power electronics. In this paper, we firstly trace the high-frequency error origination in traditional electrometric method and propose a two-step calibration method for the system to compensate the phase angle discrepancy between exciting current and induced voltage. The first-step calibration eliminates the phase angle discrepancies caused by propagation delay of current and voltage probes, while the second-step calibration compensates residual phase angle discrepancies. A calibration factor k is defined to determine whether the second-step calibration is needed. The experimental results demonstrate that the system's phase discrepancy is compensated within 0.13°, enabling power loss measurement frequency up to 20 MHz that much higher than present apparatus. Our results will facilitate the development of high-frequency soft magnetic materials and promote the miniaturization of power electronics.

Abstract:Several technical schemes of constructing a injection kicker magnet and its vacuum chambers are firstly reviewed and discussed. A method of using ferrite kicker magnets with ceramic chambers inside is adopted in HLS new injection system. The inner surfaces of these ceramic chambers are coated with a metallic layer to meet the requirements of both the penetration of pulse magnetic field and small beam coupling impedance. The loss factors and wake fields of the ceramic chambers with and without coating are measured. Broadband impedance parameters of these ceramic chambers are obtained by fitting the measured data. Combining the results of magnetic field studies, an improved coating scheme is proposed for the new ceramic chambers.

Abstract:Beam measurement is very important for accelerators. In this paper, modern digital beam measurement techniques based on IQ (In-phase & Quadrature-phase) analysis are discussed. Based on this method and highspeed high-resolution analog-to-digital conversion, we have completed three beam measurement electronics systems designed for the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS), Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF), and Accelerator Driven Sub-critical system (ADS). Core techniques of hardware design and real-time system calibration are discussed, and performance test results of these three instruments are also presented.

Abstract:The electromagnetic particle velocity measurement technology is an important measurement method in the study of stress wave propagation. This article analyzes the problem that the pulsed-magnetic-field-based electromagnetic particle velocity measurement technology will introduce additional induced electromotive force and proposes an electromagnetic particle velocity measurement technology based on superconducting magnet. After considering the factors of electromagnetism, structure, and heat distribution, a superconducting magnet with 500-mm room-temperature bore was constructed, and the proposed electromagnetic particle velocity measurement system based on the superconducting magnet was designed subsequently. The experiment of filled explosion in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) was carried out, and high-quality particle velocity and displacement signals were obtained, which verified the measurement performance of the system. The proposed method can provide a more powerful test means for the study of stress wave propagation.

Abstract:In this article, we present a novel method to measure the residual magnetic field in the magnetic shield. Because of the nonlinear Zeeman effect, the magnetic resonance width will grow with the increasing magnetic field. By detecting the dependence of the magnetic resonance signal width on the applied magnetic field, the residual magnetic field in the magnetic shield can be deduced. The error of the deduced value and the true value can be less than 1.5 nT. Higher sampling rate can result in less error.

Abstract:A measurement system based on the colossal magnetoresistance CMR-B-scalar sensor was developed for the measurement of short-duration high-amplitude magnetic fields. The system consists of a magnetic field sensor made from thin nanostructured manganite film with minimized memory effect, and a magnetic field recording module. The memory effect of the La1-xSrx(Mn1-yCoy)zO3 manganite films doped with different amounts of Co and Mn was investigated by measuring the magnetoresistance (MR) and resistance relaxation in pulsed magnetic fields up to 20 T in the temperature range of 80-365 K. It was found that for low-temperature applications, films doped with Co (LSMCO) are preferable due to the minimized magnetic memory effect at these temperatures, compared with LSMO films without Co. For applications at temperatures higher than room temperature, nanostructured manganite LSMO films with increased Mn content above the stoichiometric level have to be used. These films do not exhibit magnetic memory effects and have higher MR values. To avoid parasitic signal due to electromotive forces appearing in the transmission line of the sensor during measurement of short-pulsed magnetic fields, a bipolar-pulsed voltage supply for the sensor was used. For signal recording, a measurement module consisting of a pulsed voltage generator with a frequency up to 12.5 MHz, a 16-bit ADC with a sampling rate of 25 MHz, and a microprocessor was proposed. The circuit of the measurement module was shielded against low- and high-frequency electromagnetic noise, and the recorded signal was transmitted to a personal computer using a fiber optic link. The system was tested using magnetic field generators, generating magnetic fields with pulse durations ranging from 3 to 20 μs. The developed magnetic field measurement system can be used for the measurement of high-pulsed magnetic fields with pulse durations in the order of microseconds in different fields of science and industry.
Measurement and analysis of radiated electromagnetic fields around the pulsed power supplies

Abstract:The pulsed power supply generates great pulse current that would reach several hundreds thousands amperes. Thereby, the measurement of the spatial and temporal distributions of the radiated electromagnetic fields could be useful to analyze the electromagnetic interference to the electronic apparatuses around the power supply. Two types of pulsed power supplies axe focused. They both use capacities as their energy storage modules, while one type of supply uses spark gap switches, and another one uses silicon controlled rectifier. Several B-dot loop probes, D-dot probes and a digital oscilloscope, with enough sampling rate and memory depth, are used to measure the magnetic and electric fields around the supplies separately. The magnetic fields near the switches axe focused especially. The probe proofreading experiment is also developed to verify the probe coefficients. It comes out that the electric field is very small. The comparisons between the two pulsed power supplies have been made, and the results show that the radiation magnetic field of the pulsed power supply using spark gap switches owns the spectrum that could reach up to 10 MHz, while the other one is only less than 1 MHz.

Abstract:In recent years, fast timing detectors have attracted more and more attention in the fields of high-energy physics and nuclear medicine due to their advantages in magnetic immunity and time resolution. Through simulation analysis, we discussed in detail the reason why the gain of sensor changes with the magnetic field strength. To improve the test efficiency, we proposed a test scheme to evaluate the magnetic immunity through the shift of the signal pulse height with the magnetic field. The results show that when the sensor axis is parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field direction, the magnetic field tolerance of the sensor is up to 5 T and 1.85 T, respectively. Besides, the time resolution of the sensor is not affected by the magnetic field strength under fixed conditions. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
