Abstract:This article aims to investigate the dynamic characteristics (e.g. natural frequency and damping ratio) for two super high-rise completed and uncompleted buildings. Real-time kinematic-global navigation satellite system technology is applied to observe the dynamic responses. To improve the positioning accuracy and avoid distortion of the results, a Type 1 Chebyshev high-pass digital filter is used. The natural frequencies and damping ratios of the buildings are determined using the fast Fourier transform analysis and random decrement technique combined with a logarithmic decrement method, respectively. The structural parameters are obtained. The results show that real-time kinematic-global navigation satellite system technology can provide the dynamic responses of super high-rise buildings in an efficient manner and that the dynamic characteristics from field measurements agree well with the results of the numerical simulation.

Abstract:With rapid industrialization, the construction of high-rise buildings is a good and effective solution to the rational and effective use of land resources and alleviation of existing land resource tensions. Especially in the construction process, if there is a problem with the pile foundation, the building will inevitably be tilted, which will directly affect the personal safety of the construction workers and resident users. The experiments in this article use the concept of big data to divide the system into modules such as data collection, data preprocessing, feature extraction, prediction model building, and model application in order to provide massive data storage and parallel computing services to form a security test system. The experimental data show that wireless sensor technology is applied to the inclination monitoring of buildings, and a monitoring system based on wireless inclination sensors is designed to enable real-time dynamic monitoring of buildings to ensure human safety. When the experimental model frame is stable under normal environmental conditions, a nonstationary vibration is artificially produced for a period of time from the outside world, which is about 60 s higher than the traditional method, and the efficiency is also increased by about 80%, a situation where a building has a reversible tilt change.

Abstract:In field of structural health monitoring,an image processing technology based on digital camera fechnology attracts people's attention as a new technique of structure vibration monitoring.Taking Guangzhou New TV Tower as the research background,an industrial digital camera GPS and accelerometers were used to monitor the dynamic characteristics of the tower.The data analysis showed that the dynamic displacement time history of the tower tip obtained from the digital camera system matches well with that obtained from GPS;the former can be used to identify the lower natural frequencies;the first natural frequency obtained from the digital camera system matches well with those obtained from GPS,accelerometers and finite element analysis(FEA).The research results showed that application of digital camera technology in dynamic characteristics monitoring of a highrise structure is an effective new technique in structural health monitoring.

Abstract:In this study, a vision-based method for monitoring of structural dynamic behaviors is presented. With the aid of digital image processing technique and multi-point pattern matching algorithm, an integrated system for monitoring of structural dynamic behaviors is developed. A comparative study of vibration monitoring and dynamic characteristics identification is conducted with the vision-based displacement measurement system and the acceleration measurement system synchronously. The experimental results demonstrate that the structural dynamic indicators analyzed by the proposed vision-based system and the acceleration measurement system are quite consistent, which validates the feasibility of the proposed method for monitoring of structural dynamic behaviors by vision-based system.

Abstract:With the acceleration of urbanization, there are increasingly more high-rise buildings in cities. In turn, high-rise building collapse accidents occur frequently. The causes of the danger, in addition to the extremely severe stress, are predominantly due to the long-term role of unstable factors, resulting in an unrecoverable internal structure. Therefore, it is advisable to monitor the dynamic deformation of buildings to prevent accidents. However, there is no particularly mature application system on the market to enable this monitoring, so our research group has carried out a long-term research in this field. This paper introduces the design of a set of practical information systems by using information technology and the principle of close-range photogrammetry. The system used the photographing scale transformation-time baseline parallax (PST-TBP) method to analyse image data collected with a digital camera, implement close-range photogrammetry, and input the image data into a computer. A building deformation diagram is obtained using our own software. The associated deformation curve can clearly reproduce the building deformation trend to monitor the building health. We conducted many laboratory simulation experiments to verify the information system, and the verification results prove that this process is rigorous. To apply this information system to a real-life scenario as soon as possible, we further studied its application to high-rise buildings, improved the system by using data and experience obtained by monitoring the tallest local building, and achieved good results. Finally, combined with the development of current intelligent technology, directions for system improvement are explored.

Abstract:Asa convenient and effective tool for monitoring of the structural behaviors of civil infrastructure, the machine vision-based sensing technology integrated with digital image processing algorithm has achieved great progress in the field of structural health monitoring (SHM). The prominent advantages of this kind of measurement technology mainly include non-contact, long-distance and high-resolution. Up to now, various types of vision-based systems have been developed and applied in structural performance monitoring of engineering structures, however, seldom investigations are relevant to monitoring of structural dynamic characteristics. In this paper, the method for multi-point synchronous measurement of structural dynamic displacement is proposed. The structural modal parameters are identified using measured multi-point dynamic displacements and fast Fourier transform. A simple-supported rectangle steel beam model is established for conducting experiments to investigate (i) comparison study on the measurement results obtained by the vision-based system and the accelerometer, (ii) the effect of the measurement distance on the accuracy of the vision-based system, and (iii) the feasibility of different types of targets (LED lamp and black spot). The experimental results show that the proposed vision-based method is effective, accurate and stable for structural dynamic response monitoring and modal parameter identification.

Abstract:A noncontact structural dynamic characteristics identification method based on machine vision technology was proposed in order to overcome the existent drawbacks of traditional structural vibration monitoring,such as,difficult arrangement of sensors and wires,disturbing traffic,etc.The method of multi-point structural dynamic displacement calculation based on the pattern matching algorithm was developed.Structural dynamic characteristics were identified by using multi-point structural displacement time history signals.A vertical steel bar to analog a bridge tower was fabricated, LED lamps and accelerometers were deployed on it.A comparative investigation for vibration monitoring and dynamic characteristics identification was conducted using the vision-based displacement measurement system and the acceleration measurement system synchronously.The test results demonstrated that the structural dynamic indices with the proposed system and the acceleration measurement system agree well,they verify the feasibility of the proposed method for structural dynamic characteristics identification.

Abstract:High-rise buildings subjected to harsh excitations like typhoons or earthquakes usually present nonlinear features and exhibit time-varying behavior of structural modal properties. Under such circumstances, variation in structural natural frequencies can serve as a critical indicator for structural condition assessment. However, limited by noises contained in measurement records and time-frequency resolution of signal analysis, most instantaneous frequency identification methods are difficult to provide accurate estimation of time-varying natural frequencies of high-rise buildings. To address this issue, a combined scheme based on the variational mode decom-position method and adaptive superlets transform (VMD-ASLT) for time-varying natural fre-quency identification is presented in this paper. Through numerical simulation studies and field measurements of dynamic responses of a 508 m high skyscraper, the noise robustness and ac-curacy of the combined scheme for time-varying structural natural frequency estimation are validated. Moreover, the combined scheme is further utilized to investigate the time-varying features of natural frequencies of the skyscraper under typhoon and earthquake excitations. This paper aims to provide an effective tool for time-varying structural natural frequency esti-mation and further reveal the variation of the dynamical behavior of high-rise buildings under harsh excitations.

Abstract:Considerable economic benefits have been achieved with the building horizontal movement technology in city planning and reconstruction. However, lack of the related theory and criterion, this technology is still at an initial stage. Consequently, it is necessary that the real-time monitoring should be applied to prevent the potential problems due to uncertain factors in building horizontally moving engineering. Here the method of real-time measurement used in a real project was presented in detail. The test results showed that this method was quite reliable and accurate.

Abstract:Damage detection is the core technique of structure health monitoring systems. Mostly, the detection is based on comparison of initial signatures (frequency, mode shapes and so on) of intact structure with that of damaged structure. The techniques based on the analysis of vibration data of structures have received great attention in recent years. Generally, high-rise buildings have enough security under wind or some other natural conditions. Instances of damage caused by routine work can be rarely found. But under earthquake, high-rise buildings damages may occur on some weakness areas. In this paper, based on establishing the stiffness matrix of the columns and beams with joint damage, the finite element model of the damaged frame structure is set up. Calculating the modal date by the finite element model between the intact and damaged structure, simple and multi damages being imitated at the locations of the joints, the curvature mode shape method is used to identify the damage. The numerical example shows that the structural damage can be efficiency identified by using vibration characteristics of the building.

Abstract:A high-rise shear wall building structure in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, is analyzed by means of static-dynamic analytical method. The method combines nonlinear static analysis of 3D model with nonlinear time history analysis based on flexure-shear storey model. First of all, nonlinear static analysis method is applied to 3D model of the structure and the storey restoring force curves are obtained. On the basis of the flexure shear storey model, elasto-plastic analysis is carried out by the nonlinear time history method. Finally, the vibration-absorptive analysis of the structure with nonlinear viscous fluid damper under earthquake is performed. The results show that static-dynamic analytical method can be applied to evaluate the overall elastic-plastic seismic performance of the structure and provide a reference for engineering design of similar projects.

Abstract:Dynamic characteristics of large structures, such as tall buildings, longspan suspension, cable-stayed bridges and tall chimneys, are key to assess their drift and stress conditions. The dynamic characteristics of large structures are difficult to measure directly under the condition of earthquakes or strong winds using traditional techniques such as laser collimator, total station and accelerometers. Therefore there is a great need for developing new method or technique for this purpose. Recent advances in Global Positioning System (GPS) technology provide a great opportunity to monitor long-period changes of structures reliably. GPS receivers capable to gauge the motion at the centimeter or sub-centimeter level with sampling frequency 10Hz or even 20 Hz are now available from several manufacturers. To the authors’ knowledge, the capability of identifying dynamic characteristics from GPS observations has not been widely verified. For the feasibility study on using kinematic GPS technology to identify the dynamic characteristics of tall buildings, some experiments were conducted in a simulative environment. This paper discusses in detail the experiment device, and the ways through them GPS data are recorded, processed and analyzed. With post-processing version of NovAtel’s Softsurv software and auto-regressive (AR) spectral analysis method, relative displacements and corresponding vibrating frequencies have been derived from GPS observations. The results indicate that the dynamic characteristics can be identified accurately by kinematic GPS technology.

Abstract:It is well-known that structures composed of super high-rise buildings accumulate damages gradually due to ultra-long loads, material aging, and component defects. Thus, the bearing capacity of the structures can be significantly decreased. In addition, these effects may cause inestimable life and property losses upon strong winds, earthquakes, and other heavy loads. Hence, it is necessary to develop real-time health monitoring methods for super high-rise buildings to deeply understand the running state during operation, timely discover potential safety potentials, and to provide reference data for reinforcement design. Along these lines, in this work, the built super high-rise buildings (Yunding Building) and super high-rise buildings (the Main Tower of the Shandong International Financial Center), under construction, were selected as the research objects. The overall dynamic deformation laws of super high-rise buildings were monitored by using ground-based real aperture radar (GB-RAR) technology for its advantages in non-contact measurement, remote monitoring, and real-time display of observation results. Denoising of the observation data was also carried out based on wavelet analysis. The visualization of the space state of the Yunding Building was realized based on handheld LiDAR technology. From the acquired results, it was demonstrated that the measuring accuracy of GB-RAR could reach the submillimeter level, while the noises under a natural state of wavelet analysis were eliminated well. The maximum deformation values of the Yunding Building and the Main Tower of Shandong International Financial Center under their natural state were 9.63 mm and 16.46 mm, respectively. Under sudden wind loads, the maximum deformation of the Yunding Building could be as high as 895.79 mm. The overall motion state switched between an S-shaped pattern, hyperbolic-type, and oblique line, presented the characteristics of nonlinear elastic deformation.

Abstract:Accurate identification of dynamic displacements and mode shapes is essential for determining the operating conditions of super high-rise buildings. However, existing structural health monitoring studies typically rely on a limited number of sensors to investigate the individual direction responses, disregarding the overall behaviors, which is inadequate for super high-rise buildings with considerable flexibility. Furthermore, extended monitoring periods resulting in time delays restrict the possibility of using additional sensors for joint monitoring. Based on the theory of multi-sensor data fusion, this study provides a new solution to identify the overall dynamic displacements and mode shapes through fusing acceleration and inclination, both of which can be directly measured in the structural health monitoring system. First, the time delays extracted from the measured data are presented and classified into two groups to facilitate data processing. Then, a multi-sensor data fusion rule based on the similarity of signal components is proposed to establish the relationships between inclinometers and accelerometers of different types, heights, and orientations, and a signal synchronization algorithm based on cross-correlation theory is employed in terms of the fusion rule. The proposed algorithm and fusion method are effectively validated by numerical simulations in both synchronized and unsynchronized cases and compared with other displacement estimation methods. Finally, the fusion displacement is derived by fusing the synchronized inclination and acceleration using the Kalman filtering algorithm. A full-scale field experiment on the 632 m high Shanghai Tower is conducted to verify the applicability of the proposed method to actual super high-rise buildings. It is demonstrated that the fusion displacement derived from the measured data after synchronization exhibits excellent characteristics in both time and frequency domains. This is further evidenced by the successful identification of the two-dimensional dynamic displacements and the first nine mode shapes of the Shanghai Tower during the approach of Typhoon Krosa.
Building change detection using aerial images and existing 3D data

Abstract:The purpose of this research is to develop a practical system for building damage detection in dense urban areas after natural disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons, and tsunamis. A novel approach is presented that allows real-time building change detection using high resolution aerial images and existing 3D building data. The developed system contains two major processing modules: inflight processing and ground processing. Inflight processing module mainly extracts feature information from images acquired by an airborne digital camera, and compresses them in order to transfer to the ground. Ground processing module is responsible to analyze building changes by comparing the feature information to the existing 3D data. The automated change detection is performed by the following steps: firstly, edge features of all buildings in the aerial images are extracted on board of an aircraft; Then, the outlines of each building, which are extracted from the 3D building data, are projected onto the images based on the interior and exterior orientation parameters of the camera, and compared to the extracted edge features of each building in the images. The Portion Hausdorff Matching is applied to calculate the similarities between the projected outlines and the extracted edge features. Finally, collapsed buildings are detected using the calculated similarities. The maximal similarity between the edge features and the projected outlines in the direction of projection can be used to detect the change in building height. This approach is verified using an airborne digital camera UltraCamD image and corresponding 3D building data of Tokyo, Japan. The heights of some buildings in the 3D building data are manually modified in order to simulate building changes. The experimental results show that among 1320 buildings used in the test, 45 buildings are successfully detected as collapsed or removed. Among them, 9 buildings are correctly detected out of 10 collapsed buildings. Also, 2885 buildings are used in another test for detecting changes in building heights. 11 of the 27 buildings known to have height changes are successfully detected. The experimental results indicate that the proposed approach shows great potential for practical applications although still faces challenges from factors such as inaccurate 3D building data, occlusions due to high building density, and small changes in building height. ©2009 IEEE.

Abstract:Dynamic vibration characteristics monitoring of high-rise buildings is of great significance for evaluating their safety operation conditions, verifying structural design parameters and updating numerical models. A ground-based rea-laperture radar (RAR) has been applied to a high-rise building in Wuhan, China. In the case of RAR measurements, in which several points in the same range bins can add unexpected multiplicity contributions due to spatial resolution varying with distance, the static clutter effect must be removed. However, only a few studies have analyzed it. In this paper, we introduced the least squares fitting circle method to eliminate the static clutter. On this basis, the accuracy of instrument deformation detection is verified by a precise stepping mobile platform in laboratory. Subsequently, we established a sequential quadratic programming-genetic algorithm (SQP-GA) to identify the dynamic vibration characteristics of buildings under natural environment excitation. The SQP-GA method not only accurately identifies the resonance frequencies, but also directly extracts the amplitudes of sine and cosine components of the building vibration signals under the resonance frequencies response compared with the traditional spectrum analysis based on fast Fourier transform.

Abstract:Based on GPS technology,this paper studies the dynamic characteristic under ambient excitation of major blocks of Chongqing University and analyze excitation data and verifies the excitation scheme.The result of research indicates that the building vibration frequency can be obtained accurately and quickly to monitor dynamic characteristic of buildings under ambient excitation with GPS.It provides reference for structural design of high-rise building and basis of correcting error of construction accurately.
Static And Dynamic Nonlinear Analysis Of A Super High-Rise Hybrid Structure

Abstract:Elasto-plastic analysis methods can actually indicate the characteristic of structure, and it is generally classified as static and dynamic analysis. This paper is concerned with the seismic performance evaluation of a super high-rise hybrid structure on a background of project by using nonlinear static procedure (NSP) and nonlinear dynamic procedure (NDP). In the course of NSP (pushover analysis), the applied lateral load pattern is based on the seismic storey shear according to the analysis of elastic response spectra. Moreover, the input motions for the NDP (nonlinear time-history analysis) includes two earthquake records and one artificial wave, which respectively have three level earthquake intensities: frequent, fortifiable and severe earthquake. Comparing results of NSP with that of NDP, we recognize that two methodologies are comparable. And the analytical results show that all the inter-storey drifts under three different levels meet the requirements of Chinese code for seismic design. Conclusion can be drawn that the super high-rise hybrid structure achieves the earthquake performance objective.
