Abstract:Effects of anisotropy, symmetry, atom arrangement and Coulomb interaction on the linear optical polarizability spectra of five C-78 isomers are theoretically studied by using the extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with and without Coulomb interaction. The main results are as follows. 1) The spectra become anisotropic with respect to the direction of the electric field of light. The property is common in the model with and without Coulomb interaction. 2) The symmetry and atom arrangement have great effects on the peak positions, strengths, and number. 3) The Coulomb interaction tends to shift peaks to higher energies and enhances the oscillator strengths at higher energies.

Abstract:The semi-empirical AM1 and INDO/CIS methods as well as density function theory were used to study equilibrium geometries and spectroscopic properties of the possible isomers of C78O5 based on C2v-C78. The most stable geometry of C78O5 is 28,29,30,31,52,53,70,71,73,78-C78O5(A) with one annulene-like structure and four epoxide structures. Compared with that of C2v-C78, the blue-shift in the electronic absorption spectra of C78O5 isomers is predicted. The reason for the blue-shift effect is discussed and the electronic transitions are assigned. The IR and NMR spectra of C78O5 are explored with the AM1 and B3LYP/6-31G methods based on the B3LYP/6-31G optimized geometries.

Abstract:The structures and stabilities of all the 21 possible isomers for C77B- based on C-78 (C-2v) were studied by the INDO series of methods. The most two stable geometries are C77B- (10) and C77B- (7), where B(10) and B(7) are located at the apexes among two hexagons and a pentagon near the shortest axis of C-78 (C-2v), and the former is more stable than the latter by 0.1902 eV. Based on the optimized geometries, the electronic spectra of the C77B- isomers were investigated with the INDO/CIS method and the electronic transitions were assigned. The reason for the red-shift of the first absorption peaks for C77B- compared with that Of C-78 (C-2v) was discussed.

Abstract:The semi-empirical INDO method was used to study the electronic structures and the spectra of all of the 34 possible isomers of C78O based on C78 with group C2v. This calculation can simulate positions of an additional oxygen atom in C78 and predict the spectroscopic characteristics of the isomers. The most stable geometry of C78O is the 73,78-C78O molecule with an epoxide structure. The added 73,78-bond is located between two hexagons (66) and is intersected by the shortest C2 axis in C78 with group C2v. Atomic orbitals of the oxygen atom play an important role in lowering HOMO energy of 73,78-C78O. Compared with C78 with group C2v, the blue-shift in the electronic absorption spectrum for 73,78-C78O was observed. The reason of the blue-shift effect was discussed, and the electronic transitions were assigned based on the theoretical calculations.

Abstract:We present results for nonlinear optical susceptibilities of fullerenes, including C-60, C-70, and C-84, in the condensed phase from large-scale nb initio calculations using self-consistent reaction field theory and an analytical local-field method. It is shown that the intermolecular polarization interaction has significant effects on the nonlinear properties of the fullerenes, and that, in some contrast to other organic species, nondipolar contributions to this interaction are important. Based on the theoretical and experimental results for the polarizability of C-60 in the gas phase, a general local-field factor for C-60 film has been obtained, which is found to be quite different from the classical Lorenz-Lorentz local-field factor. The calculated and experimental nonlinear optical susceptibilities of C-60 are in good agreement provided the comparison is made on the same basis, viz at nonresonant frequencies and considering the relevant macroscopic quantities. The dielectric and density dependence of the nonlinear optical susceptibilities of C-70 are discussed.

Abstract:Eighteen possible isomers Of C-78(CH2)(2) were investigated by the R 1)0 method. It was indicated that the most stable isomer was 42,43,62,63-C-78(CH2)(2), where the -CH2 groups were added to the 6/6 bonds located at the same hexagon passed by the longest axis of C-78 (C-2v), to form cyclopropane structures. Based on the most stable four geometries of C-78(CH2)(2) optimized at B3LYP/3-21G level, the first absorptions in the electronic spectra calculated with the INDO/CIS method and the IR frequencies of the C--C bonds on the carbon cage computed using the AM I method were blue-shifted compared with those of C-78 (C-2v) because of the bigger LUMO-HOMO energy gap and the less conjugated carbon cage after the addition. The chemical shifts of C-13 NMR for the carbon atoms on the added bonds calculated at B3LYP/3-21G level were moved upfield thanks to the conversion from sp(2)-C to SP3-C.

Abstract:Intermediate neglect of differential overlap(INDO) calculations were used to study two isomers of C64H6: one of C2v symmetry and the other of Cs symmetry. The symmetry of C64H6 was discussed and related to 13C NMR results. The calculated electronic spectrum for C64H6(C2v) is in good agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:Using the extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model and the sum-over-state (SOS) method, we have calculated the linear polarizability α and the third-order polarizability γ for armchair tube with D5h or D5d symmetry and zigzag tube with D3h or D3d symmetry. Our numerical calculations indicate that due to symmetry, the armchair tubes have more peaks in the low frequency region of linear α spectra and their γ values are larger than those of the zigzag tubes.

Abstract:Using the extened Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model and the Sum-Over-State method, we have calculated the third-order nonlinear polarizability γ and its dispersion spectra for single substitutional fullerenes C77X(X=B or N atoms). The results indicate:(1) compared with C78,each of the static values of γ through the substitutional doping increases to some extent (3—40 times);(2) the dynamic nonliear optical reponse of C77X not only depends on doping atoms, but also depends on the substituted isomers and doped sites.

Abstract:Ultraviolet photoelectron spectra (UPS) of C-82 isomers have been calculated using hybrid density functional theory in combination with the Gelius model [Proceedings of the International Conference on Electron spectroscopy, edited by D. A. Shirley (North-Holland, Amsterdam, 1972), p. 311; J. Electron Spectrosc. Relat. Phenom. 5, 985 (1974)]. The calculated UPS spectra are found to be isomer dependent and in good agreement with the experimental counterparts. Near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray emission spectroscopy, and the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of three important isomers [3(C-2), 6(C-s), and 9(C-2v)] have also been simulated. Strong isomer dependence has also been found for NEXAFS, XPS, and RIXS spectra.

Abstract:A program for calculating nonlinear second - order optical susceptibilities beta (ijk) and beta (mu) using the ZINDO methods based on the Sum - Over - States (SOS) formula has been devised. A total of seven C-60 - TTF cyclohexene - fused dyads were investigated. The stable structure, electronic spectra and nonlinear second order optical property were studied. The results show that the calculated electronic spectra of the studied molecules are consistent well with the experimental ones. It is concluded that the substitutes have a great influence on the nonlinear second - order optical properties of studied molecules. And the calculated results have been explained.

Abstract:Using the extended Hubbard model and sum-over-state method, we have calculated the linear polarizability alpha and the third-order nonlinear polarizability gamma for (C59N)(2). we find that (C59N)(2) has very big gamma value (around 10(-32) esu), and its alpha and gamma values are bigger than those of C59N. In particular, when 1.2 eV less than or equal to 3 omega, (C59N)(2) has much larger gamma values than C59N.

Abstract:The lowest-lying 10 isomers of C-106 satisfying the isolated-pentagon rule (IPR) were predicted from 1233 IPR isomers with semiempirical and density functional theory based methods. The structures, stabilities, IR and UV spectroscopic, and the third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of those low-lying isomers were explored in detail. C-s:331, C-2:1194, and C-1:534 are the three lowest-energy isomers with almost identical energies and could be observed in experiment. When the entropy effects in the isomeric fullerene system are taken into account, isomer C-2:1194 prevails up to 3000 degrees C. In the high temperature region, the concentrations of those ten low-lying isomers are very similar, indicating that the isomers at high temperatures will be hard to isolate. The third-order NLO properties under external fields (0.0-3.0 eV) of the five lowest-lying isomers were analyzed, and the average NLO properties of those isomers were predicted at room temperature for experimental exploration.

Abstract:Electronic spectra, and the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of five isomers of C96 were investigated using density functional theory and semi-empirical methods. The simulated electronic spectra of C2:181, C1:144, C1:145, and C2:176 have strong absorptions above 500nm. The electronic spectra of C1:144, C1:145, and C2:176 are similar. The third-order NLO properties of the isomers were analyzed under an external field. Small structural differences between C1:144 and C1:145 result in NLO responses that occur at different external fields. Entropy effects on the NLO properties are significant. The NLO responses of the five most stable isomers differ in the concentration averaged sample.

Abstract:The second-order nonlinear susceptibility β of substituted fullerenes C 59 X (X = B, N) is calculated by using the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model and the sumover-states (SOS) method. Obtained results indicate that the substituted doped balls C 59 X have larger β values than C 60/N, N-dicthylaniline and pure C 60. The large second-order nonlinearities of C 59 X stems from the large change in dipole moment accompanied by intramolecule charge transfer transitions and the relatively low-lying charge transfer excitation energies.

Abstract:The equilibrium geometries and UV-visible spectra of a series of donor-C-60 molecules were obtained by means of the AM1 and INDO/CI method, on the basis of accurate geometric and electronic structures. The nonlinear second-order optical polarizabilities were calculated using the method INDO/SDCI combined with the Sum-Over-States (SOS) expression. The calculated beta (lambda = 1.34 mum) values are 28.81, 48.56, 57.33, 66.99 70.85, 85.84, and 142.14 ( x 10(-30) esu) for the molecules A: B, C, D, E, F and G, respectively. The frontier orbitals were plot for the representative molecules in order to exhibit the intramolecular charge transfer. The results indicate that introduction of thienylethylene[GRAPHICS]can enhance the NLO response and the dimethylaniline-substituted dithienyl-ethylene-C-60 (molecule G) possesses the largest NLO second-order optical polarizability. The large beta values can be attributed to the charge transfer between the substituents and C-60, as well as within the three-dimensional conjugated sphere of C-60.

Abstract:We discuss the lattice relaxation upon doping of fullerens C60 and C70, using a Longuet-Higgins-Salem model and we calculate the A8-type vibrational modes. We then exploit the VEH (valence effective Hamiltonian) method to study the electronic structures of the fullerenes. The valence electronic DOS (densities of states) are calculated to be in excellent agreement with synchrotron photoemission experiments. We apply the VEH/SOS (Sum-Over-States) approach to study the nonlinear optical response of C60 and C70.

Abstract:We report an extensive tabulation of several important topological invariants for all the isomers of carbon (5,6)-fullerenes Cn with n=52--70. The topological invariants (including Kekulé count, Clar count, and Clar number) are computed and reported in the form of the corresponding Zhang–Zhang (ZZ) polynomials. The ZZ polynomials appear to be distinct for each isomer cage, providing a unique label that allows for differentiation between various isomers. Several chemical applications of the computed invariants are reported. The results suggest rather weak correlation between the Kekulé count, Clar count, Clar number invariants, and isomer stability, calling into doubt the predictive power of these topological invariants in discriminating the most stable isomer of a given fullerene. The only exception is the Clar count/Kekulé count ratio, which seems to be the most important diagnostic discovered from our analysis. Stronger correlations are detected between Pauling bond orders computed from Kekulé structures (or Clar covers) and the corresponding equilibrium bond lengths determined from the optimized DFTB geometries of all 30,579 isomers of C20–C70.
