Abstract:Efficient optical limitation is demonstrated in the toluene solution of C60 based on the reverse saturable absorption. The highly nonlinear absorption can be used to smooth a spike-like pulse in the nanosecond region. Optical bistability is obtained in a nonlinear Fabry-Perot cavity filled with a thin layer of polystyrene doped with C60/C70. A smooth pulse with 25 ns width (full width at half-maximum) is compressed to 15 ns and a spike-like pulse is subjected a wave form distortion by this device. The light limitation effect in this polystyrene layer 0.3 mm thick was demonstrated at the wavelength of 532 nm and the threshold about 20 mJ/cm2.

Abstract:Deep studies on C-60(n-) and C-70(n-) have been performed based on superconductivities of M-x C-60 (M = K, Cs, Rb). The development of research in the Jahn-Teller distortion and spectroscopy of fullerene ions C-60(n +/-), C-70(n +/-), C-76(n +/-), C-78(n +/-) , and C-80(n +/-), is reviewed. Relevant works of other groups worldwide about experimental determination, theoretical calculation, structural exploration and spectroscopic investigation are introduced. The regularity of Jahn-Teller distortion and electronic spectra of fullerene ions is further explored according to authors' theoretical research in this field.

Abstract:By using nanosecond laser pulses at 532-nm wavelength, we have intensively studied the optical limiting and nonlinear optical properties of some new composites which consist of mono-functional 1,2-dihydro-1,2-methanofullerene[60]-61-carboxylic acid (FCA), multifunctional fullerenol, and supramolecular C60(HNC4H8NCH3)9 - containing polymers. The optical limiting performance of FCA/poly(styrene-co-4-vinylpyridine) is found to be better than that of its parent C60, while the multi-functional Fullerenol and supramolecular C60(HNC4H8NCH3)9 incorporated with polymers show poorer optical limiting responses. The possible sources for the improvement in the optical limiting are discussed.

Abstract:Optical limiting properties of new C_(60), derivatives C_(60)CH_2 and C60HR (R = C_6H_5CO-) in toluene are studied by frequency-doubled Nd: YAG Laser (532 nm) with 8 ns pulse width. Compared with C_(60),C_(60)HR(R=C_6H_5CO-) shows a weaker optical limiting, while C_(60)CH_2 shows an optical limiting property comparable to C_(60), but with a lower output energy at saturation.

Abstract:The solubility of fullerene (C60) is improved by combining it with an alkyl group of substituted copper (II) phthalocyanine (CuPc) through Diels–Alder reaction. Optical limiting properties of this compound were investigated by using a double frequency Nd:YAG laser system at a wavelength of 532 nm with pulse duration of 45 ps. The results show that there are two separated conjugation systems in this kind of molecule. Both of them independently contribute to the reverse saturable absorption. Broadband optical limiting materials might be designed based on the combination of various optical limiting molecules through covalent bonds. Phase separation problems existing in the mixture of various materials can be avoided.

Abstract:Reverse saturable absorption of a novel molybdenum complex of fullerene (η2-C60) Mo(CO)2(o-phen)(DBM)·2C6H6·C5H12 has been investigated under irradiation of 10 ns laser pulses at 532 nm. An enhancement of the optical limiting behavior was observed in comparison with C60. An explanation based on the enhanced triplet-state absorption caused by the intra-molecular charge transfer was predicted. The relationship between the clamped laser fluence and low-intensity transmissivity, or the concentration of the solution, was also investigated and a linear dependence was revealed.

Abstract:Optical limiting behavior through reverse saturable absorption for the solution of a buckminsterfullerene C60/C70 mixture (85% C60 and 15% C70) in toluene has been observed with 10 ns, 530 nm laser pulses. The solution concentration dependence of optical limiting degree is investigated by using the solutions of various transmissivities. The strong influence of the triplet state quenched in the existence of 3O2 is also investigated by comparing the optical limiting process for the argon-degased solution and the not argon-degased solution. The results indicate that buckminsterfullerence is a kind of promising material for light protector.

Abstract:We measured the third-order optical nonlinearity of a pure C60 solution and its derivative C60-polyaminonitrile at 810 nm wavelength. The light source was a femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser. Abstract:The reverse saturable absorption and the optical limiting (OL) property of fullerene-functionalized polycarbonates (C60–PCs) which were synthesized by a direct reaction of C60 and PC in the presence of AIBN using 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane as the solvent under microwave irradiation (MI) was investigated by z-scan technique in femtosecond scale. Its reverse saturable absorption behavior was believed to being caused by the covalently attached fullerene to the polymer chain and was found to be of the same order as C60. The measured OL results revealed that the absorption cross-section of the photo-excited singlet state was larger than that of the ground state, and the ratio of the absorption cross-section of the photo-excited singlet state to that of the ground state was determined by fitting the experimental data to the numerical integration by using the rate equation treatment. These new synthesized materials which are soluble in common organic solvents can be considered as potential sources for further optical applications, especially in ultrashort scale.

Abstract:We report two separate studies of the nonlinear optical properties of unique fullerene materials. Degenerate four-wave mixing measurements of the endohedral metallofullerene Er-2@C-82 at 1064 nm show that the third order susceptibility is increased by more than two orders of magnitude relative to the empty cage fullerenes as a result of the metal-to-cage charge transfer. Optical limiting studies of C-60 derivatives and higher fullerenes (i.e. C-76 and C-84) in the 680 to 880 nn spectral region demonstrate that these materials are strong reverse saturable absorbers at wavelengths where C-60 itself is transparent. The tremendous variety of available fullerene-derived structures provides important opportunities for optimization of nonlinear optical responses.

Abstract:Optical limiting properties of a crystal violet cation fulleride salt dissolved in tetrahydrofuran have been studied by using 10 ns, 532 nm laser pulses. The fluence-dependent transmissivity measurements were performed on the samples with the same concentration and different path lengths in a collimated optical set-up. For comparison, the fluence-dependent transmissivities of fullerene C-60 and crystal violet solutions were also measured under the same linear transmissivity. The nonlinear optical limiting effect of the fulleride salt in tetrahydrofuran was even slightly stronger than that of C-60 in toluene.

Abstract:Three different pore sizes of oxacalix[]arene[]pyrimidines modified with a naphthalene substituent were synthesized and characterized by HRMS, H NMR, and single-crystal analysis ( and ). Steady-state spectroscopy indicates these naphthalene-oxacalix[]arenes exhibit good fluorescence properties, which isattributed to the locally excited (LE) state emission, and electrochemical results show that the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) process occurs from the naphthalene substituent to the linked pyrimidine. Nanosecond transient absorption spectra, singlet oxygen quantum yields (Φ = 45.1%, Φ = 56.6%, and Φ = 65.7%) and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the torsion angle between the donor (naphthalene) and the acceptor (pyrimidine) promotes intersystem crossing (ISC), and the lifetime of the triplet state reaches ca. 8 ms. Interestingly, all three host molecules (, , and ) showed a high affinity for fullerene C, and significant binding constants in the range of 4.10-6.68 × 10 M were obtained by fluorescence titration; in contrast, previous reports indicated that the similar oxacalix[]arene[]pyrimidine scaffold could not efficiently complex with C. In the frontier molecular orbital theory calculations of the supramolecular system of , the HOMO is distributed on and the LUMO is localized on fullerene. The calculation results further demonstrated that there are strong interactions between the host and the fullerene guest, which is consistent with the result of the experiments. The characteristic photophysical properties of these novel naphthyl-decorated oxacalix[]arene[]pyrimidines broaden their application field, and the stable host-guest system with fullerene can be applied to supramolecular chemistry.

Abstract:Fullerenethiol was synthesized and self-assembled on the surface of gold nanoparticle to form a homogeneous bright ring with a thickness of 4–5 nm. Optical limiting performance of the core–shell nanoparticles was investigated with nanosecond pulse. The experimental results show that the gold nanoparticles possess better optical limiting effect compared with the parent fullerenethiol.

Abstract:Fullerenation of polycarbonate (PC) is achieved by direct reaction of C-60 with PC using AlCl3 as catalyst. Stirring a 1, 1, 2, 2-tetrachloroethane solution of C-60 and PC in the presence of AlCl3 under nitrogen at 140 degrees C for 24 h attached C-60 to the PC chains, yielding fullerenated PCs (C-60-PCs) with a C-60 content up to 2.16 wt %. The C-60-PCs are soluble in tetrahydrofuran (THF) and chloroform, and IR, UV, and NMR analyses suggest that they possess the molecular structure HxC60(PC)(x) with x < 1 on the average. The C-60-PCs limit strong 532-nm optical pulses more effectively than the parent C-60. Light transmission spectra of the C-60-PC solutions red-shift with increasing concentration, with their cutoff wavelengths predictably tunable by simply changing their concentrations.

Abstract:The push-pull functionalized fullerenes consisting of multi-N,N-diethylamine donors covalently attached to N-methylpyrrolidine derivative of C60 have been designed and investigated. The structures and first hyperpolarizabilities of these fullerene derivatives were calculated using density functional theory. Furthermore, absorption spectra of the complexes along with electron density difference maps corresponding to the most intense electronic transitions were achieved by time-dependent density functional theory. It suggests that with the growing numbers of N,N-Dimethylanilin acting as electron-donating group, the polarizabilities, dipole moments and the first hyperpolarizabilits increase, however, transition energies of the crucial electronic transitions decrease and the absorption wavelength shows bathochromic effect. The excitation transitions have significant charge transfer character and, as a consequence, the novel complexes can behave as second-order nonlinear optical chromophores, in which the N,N-Dimethylanilin act as donors towards fullerenes.

Abstract:New carbon forms that exhibit extraordinary physicochemical properties can be generated from nanostructured precursors under extreme pressure. Nevertheless, synthesis of such fascinating materials is often not well understood. That is the case of the C-60 precursor, with irreproducible results that impede further progress in the materials design. Here, the semiconducting amorphous carbon, having band gaps of 0.1-0.3 eV and the advantages of isotropic super hardness and superior toughness over single-crystal diamond and inorganic glasses, is produced from fullerene at high pressure and moderate temperatures. A systematic investigation of the structure and bonding evolution is carried out with complementary characterization methods, which helps to build a model of the transformation that can be used in further high-pressure/high-temperature (high p,T) synthesis of novel nano-carbon systems for advanced applications. The amorphous carbon materials produced have the potential of accomplishing the demanding optoelectronic applications that diamond and graphene cannot achieve.

Abstract:The nanoparticles of a copper phthalocyanine-fullerence dyad were prepared and the optical limiting properties of the nanoparticle dispersion were investigated. The nanoparticle sample (nanoparticle aqueous dispersion) exhibits an enhanced optical limiting performance as compared to the monomer sample (molecularly dispersed solution Of CuPC-C-60/THF). A mechanism based on the formation of ordered aggregates in the nanoparticles, which is expected to exert effect on the electronic structure of the system, is proposed for the nonlinear absorption enhancement of the nanoparticles. Abstract:In this work, new hybrid organic-inorganic composites of C-60-NH2(CH2)(3)Si(OC2H5)(3) (C-60-3-Aminopropyl-triethoxy-silane,C-60-KH550), C-60-NH2(CH2)(3) Si(OC2K5)(3)-CH2OCHCH2O(CH2)(3)Si(OCH3)(3) (C-60-3-Aminopropyl-triethoxysilane-3-Glcidoxypropltrimethoxysilane,C-60-KH550-KH560),and C-60-NH2(CH2)(3)Si(OC2H5)(3)CH2OCHCH2-O-(CH2)(3)-Si(OCH3)(3)-(CH3)(2)Si(OCH3)(2) (C-60-3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane-3-Glcidoxypropltrimethoxy-silaneDi-ethoxy-dimethyl-silane, C-60-KH550-KH560-DTDS) were synthesized with sol-gel processes. The infrared absorption spectra of the composites were measured. Using a Nd:YAG laser with 10ns pulse duration and 532nm wavelength, the optical limiting behaviors of the above composites were demonstrated and disscussed. As optical limiters, the laser induced damage thresholds of the slices made from such hybrid materials can be up to 5-6J/cm(2).

Abstract:The optical limiting properties of two polymer-bound multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MNWTs), poly(N-vinylcarbazole)-MWNTs (PVK-MWNTs) and polybutadiene-MWNTs (PB-MWNTs), were investigated using 532 nm nanosecond laser pulses. Both of them, especially PVK-MWNTs, showed much better optical limiting performance than that of C60 in toluene solution. A nonlinear absorption mechanism was proposed and explanation was given on the interesting difference of the optical limiting properties of these two soluble MWNTs.
