Abstract:Gratings are key components in many optical systems such as spectrometers. Improving their dispersion is very important for their applications, but improving the single-order diffraction efficiency of an ultrahigh dispersion grating is still very challenging. Here, we propose an analytical approach for the design of a new type of grating named hybrid grating, which consists of a subwavelength grating and a non-subwavelength grating. The proposed analytical approach is based on a physical model in which the non-subwavelength grating acts as an ultrathin reflection grating and the subwavelength grating acts as an antireflection coating. Using the rigorous coupled-wave analysis and the finite-difference time-domain method, we numerically demonstrate that multiple hybrid gratings designed at different wavelengths using the proposed analytical approach show a diffraction efficiency of greater than 95 % in the -1st diffraction order for TE-polarized light, an angular dispersion of greater than 0.8 mrad/nm and a deflection angle of greater than 80 degrees. Furthermore, we numerically demonstrate that by using a combined approach to optimize the parameters of a hybrid grating, the diffraction efficiency in the -1st diffraction order for TE-polarized light can be increased to more than 97 % under the condition that the angular dispersion and the deflection angle of the hybrid grating remain unchanged. Our work provides an avenue for rapid design of gratings with high angular dispersion, large deflection angle and high diffraction efficiency.

Abstract:Theoretical research and numeric model of dispersion compensation of chirped super Gaussian pulses are presented, using chirped fiber grating with the apodization of parabola squared function. It shows that pulses, after transmitting in a fiber length, will become broadened because of dispersion. When using chirped fiber grating with the apodization of parabola squared function, pulses can be compensated with the results that the width of pulses is more narrow and the max-power is higher, compared with using chirped fiber grating with the apodization of Gaussian function. The pulses are distorted after being compensated. The max-power has something to do with the order of Gaussian pulses.

Abstract:WT5”BZ]:Transmission characteristics of non chirp original Gaussian optical pulse in standard single mode fiber and dispersion compensation characteristics of linearly chirped fiber gratings have been analyzed theoretically and simulated numerically.Our results show that,optical pulses will be broadened due to dispersion,and linearly chirped fiber gratings can compensate for the broadened pulses perfectly.The linearity and smoothness of the time delay curve for a linearly chirped fiber grating are two key issues for its dispersion compensation characteristics.Our analysis is helpful for fabrication of chirped fiber gratings and its applications for dispersion compensation.[WT5”HZ]

Abstract:A sinusoidal chirp structure is proposed to improve the performance of fibre gratings as dispersion compensators and multichannel filters. Nearly ideal reflection spectra from sinusoidally chirped fibre gratings are exhibited. The bandwidth utilization defined as the ratio of -1 dB to -30 dB bandwidths could be higher than 0.85, even up to 0.985. The sinusoidal chirp can be applied to the sampled fibre gratings to enhance channel uniformity. We demonstrate 141 uniform channels with a 25-GHz spacing for high dense wavelength multiplexing applications.

Abstract:We have developed a thermally tunable module to compensate polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and chromatic dispersion (CD) simultaneously. In this module, twins of linearly chirped fiber Bragg gratings (LCFBGs) are used to compensate PMD and one non-linearly chirped FBG (NLCFBG) is used to compensate CD in 40Gb/s optical fiber communication system. The fiber Bragg gratings are coated with uniform thin metal film, and by changing the applied current through the film, the tunable compensation for PMD and CD is achieved. The fabrications of the LCFBG and NLCFBG are both utilizing the linearly chirped phase mask, making the fiber Bragg gratings easy to obtain.

Abstract:An improved design and fabrication method of nonlinearly chirped fiber Bragg gratings is demonstrated. Based on reconstruction-equivalent- chirp method, the nonlinearly chirped fiber Bragg grating is realized with a linearly chirped phase mask instead of a uniform one, which improves the performance of the device. Coated with uniform thin metal film, the obtained grating works as a tunable dispersion compensator with a tuning range ~200ps/nm, peak-to-peak group delay ripple <14ps and 3-dB bandwidth approximately 2nm. Employing this device, the power penalty in a 40- Gb/s X5/10km conventional single mode fiber using carrier suppressed return-to-zero format is less than 0.7dB at a BER=10-10.

Abstract:Sinusoidal chirps are introduced in fiber gratings to improve their performance as dispersion compensators and multichannel filters. The sinusoidally chirped fiber gratings exhibit a flattop spectrum with steep edges and high reflectivity. The bandwidth utilization defined as the ratio of -1:-30-dB bandwidth could be very high (>0.85). This structure can be applied to the sampled fiber gratings to enhance channel uniformity. We demonstrate 264 uniform channels with a 25-GHz-spacing for high-density-wavelength multiplexing applications. Multichannel dispersion compensations with seven uniform channels of 50-GHz-spacing in short fiber gratings are also demonstrated. The impact of possible fabrication errors on the spectra of the gratings is discussed.

Abstract:A nonuniform plasma Bragg grating with a monotonically increasing density-modulation profile can be naturally produced by two Gaussian laser pulses counterpropagating through a homogeneous plasma slab. Such a plasma grating exhibits a nonuniform photonic band gap with a monotonically increasing width. It can be used to compress a positively or negatively chirped pulse. Particle-in-cell simulations show that the compressed pulse has nearly no energy loss and the compression efficiency can exceed 90%.

Abstract:We describe a new method for applying a strain gradient with different profiles to convert uniform fiber Bragg gratings into linear or non-linear chirped ones. The chirping profile and the chirp rate of the fiber gratings can be controlled by simply varying the tension applied. Both the theory and experimental results are presented.

Abstract:We design a novel tunable interchannel dispersion-slope compensator using a single broad-band nonchannelized sampled fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with chirp in the sampling period. Tunability of the dispersion-slope can be achieved by stressing or heating the grating uniformly, which has a third-order time-delay variation with wavelength, thereby causing a second-order variation in dispersion. By using the equivalent-chirp method, i.e. by chirping the sampling function, we get the time-delay within -1(st) order Fourier reflection band and consequently realize dispersion slope compensator.

Abstract:Chirp tuning of ultrashort pulses is crucial for nonlinear fiber amplification and nonlinear dynamics investigations. Here we demonstrate all-fiber chirp tuning via chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) pair. Two identical long CFBG were placed reversely to cancel out most of their huge dispersion (~40 ps/nm @1030 nm), while the controllable temperature gradient along them could be used for precise chirp tuning with a tuning range of ~ ps², verified by dispersion measurement and ultrashort pulse broadening. This relatively large chirp tuning could be used in prechirp management in nonlinear fiber amplifiers, exemplified by the optical spectrum tailoring therein. In addition, we also show this precise chirp tuning capability could be very helpful for pulse temporal quality diagnosis, which is indispensable for seed pulse optimization. We believe this all-fiber chirp tuning technique would find wide applications in nonlinear amplification and ultrafast nonlinear dynamics investigations.

Abstract:A simple method to design polarization dispersion compensated arrayed waveguide gratings based on silicon nanowires is proposed using angled star couplers with different diffraction orders for TE and TM polarizations. Polarization dispersion compensation for all channels is achieved by using a 380nm×220nm silicon waveguide with an upper-cladding of SU-8. The simulation results demonstrate the validity of the design.

Abstract:A chirped fiber grating (CFG) written by the moving fiber/phase mask scanning beam technique with a uniform mask is used to demonstrate the dispersion compensation in the externally modulated microwave/millimeter-wave over fiber system It is found that the use of the CFG is an efficient way to compensate for the severe RF power degradation induced by the fiber chromatic dispersion, which results in a significant improvement in the transmission performance. The signal to noise ratio is improved from 4.8 dB to 24.4 dB when 10.58 GHz RF signal carrying 5 Mbit/s QPSK format data is transmitted over 35 km single mode fiber.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, Volume 83, Issue 3, Page 1126-1145, June 2023. We provide an optimal control framework for efficiently coupling light in a bare fiber into Bragg gratings with cubic nonlinearity. The light-grating interaction excites gap solitons, a type of localized nonlinear coherent state which propagates with a central frequency in the forbidden band gap, resulting in a dramatically slower group velocity. Due to the nature of the band gap, a substantial amount of light is back-reflected by the grating's strong reflective properties. We optimize, via a projected gradient descent method, the transmission efficiency of previously designed nonuniform grating structures in order to couple more slow light into the grating. We further explore the space of possible grating designs, using genetic algorithms, along with a previously unexplored design parameter: the grating chirp. Through these methods, we find structures that couple a greater fraction of light into the grating with the added bonus of creating slower pulses.

Abstract:One-dimensional polarization-independent grating couplers are demonstrated with the aid of the adaptive genetic algorithm optimization. By adjusting the relative weight between the coupling efficiency and the bandwidth of the polarization-dependent loss (PDL), we control the evolution direction and customize the final performance of the device. Two specific designs are generated by giving more weight to the coupling efficiency and the PDL bandwidth, respectively. Coupling efficiencies of the first design are measured to be − 7.6 d B and − 7.9 d B at 1550 nm for TE and TM polarizations, respectively, while its 1.0 dB PDL bandwidth is 25.0 nm. In contrast, the second design presents higher coupling efficiencies of − 7.6 d B and − 7.2 d B at 1550 nm for TE and TM polarizations, respectively. However, its 1.0 dB PDL bandwidth is 22.0 nm.

Abstract:We compare and contrast novel techniques for the fabrication of chirped broadband fiber Bragg gratings by ultrafast laser inscription. These methods enable the inscription of gratings with flexible period profiles and thus tailored reflection and dispersion characteristics in non-photosensitive optical fibers. Up to 19.5 cm long chirped gratings with a spectral bandwidth of up to 30 nm were fabricated and the grating dispersion was characterized. A maximum group delay of almost 2 ns was obtained for linearly chirped gratings with either normal or anomalous group velocity dispersion, demonstrating the potential for using these gratings for dispersion compensation. Coupling to cladding modes was reduced by careful design of the inscribed modification features.

Abstract:In order to increase the bandwidth of tunable fiber laser, a large channel spacing and bandwidth multi-channel filter with same reflection peak is required. A realization method of a multi-channel filter based on large channel spacing linear chirped fiber grating has been presented, which applies amplitude and phase samplings and is based on rectangle function sampling form without apodization. Any channel spacing fiber grating can be realized in one phase mask by this method. Through the comparison of theory design and experiment result, the design method is well confirmed.
