Abstract:Objective: To explore the relationship between coronary artery calcification (CAC) detected by electron beam CT (EBCT) and risk factors of coronary heart disease (CHD) and its contribution to prediction and prevention of CHD. Methods: Seven hundred and eighteen cases detected by Imatron C-150 EBCT scanner were grouped according to age, sex and the number of risk factors present in subjects. The relationship between the CAC incidence in men and women and the risk factors of CHD such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, family history and tobacco use was analysed. The influence of the number of risk factors in subjects on CAC incidence score was also analysed. The contributions of them to prediction and prevention of CHD was assessed. Results: The CAC incidence was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in the patients with hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, family history, tobacco use beth in men and women and obesity only in men than in the patients without them. The CAC incidence and score in men and women with multiple risk factors were significantly (P < 0.001) higher than those without or with one risk factor. The results in each age group were parallel. Conclusion: Hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, family history, tobacco use and obesity strongly influenced the CAC incidence. Compared with monofactor, the influence of multifactor on CAC increased by times and it is possible that the multifactor combined with CAC score contributes importantly to the prediction and prevention of CHD.
