Abstract:We propose a nonreciprocal optical add-drop multiplexer with silicon waveguide, which is realized by grating assisted coupler employing magneto-optical nonceciprocal phase shift. This device can achieve different adding or dropping peak wavelengths when light is launched in the forward-directed and backward-directed propagation. The calculation results show that the shift of the different dropping peak wavelengths is up to 0.7nm. Also, we demonstrate its applications for narrowband optical isolators and circulators. This work demonstrates that on-chip nonreciprocal optical add-drop multiplexers and optical isolations can be implemented with the proposed device, which has promising applications for optical communication systems and photonic integrated devices.

Abstract:Few-mode-fiber (FMF) based mode division multiplexing (MDM) is a promising technique to further increase the transmission capacity of single mode fibers. We propose and numerically investigate a fiber-optical mode converter (MC) using long period gratings (LPGs) fabricated on the FMF by point-by-point CO2 laser inscription technique. In order to precisely excite three modes (LP01, LP11, and LP02), both untilted LPG and tilted LPG are comprehensively optimized through the length, index modulation depth, and tilt angle of the LPG in order to achieve a mode contrast ratio (MCR) of more than 20dB with less wavelength dependence. It is found that the proposed MCs have obvious advantages of high MCR, low mode crosstalk, easy fabrication and maintenance, and compact size.

Abstract:Mode division multiplexing (MDM) transmission based on few-mode fibers (FMFs) appears to be an alternative solution for overcoming the capacity limit of single-mode fibers (SMFs). A FMF coupler-based mode division multiplexer/demultiplexer (MMUX/DeMMUX) is proposed and theoretically investigated after the fabricated FMF is characterized. MMUXs/DeMMUXs with a mode contrast ratio (MCR) of more than 20 dB can be obtained for two-mode multiplexing and three-mode multiplexing over a wavelength span of 60 and 10 nm, respectively. We numerically verify the proposed MMUX/DeMMUX which has the advantages of high MCR, easy fabrication and maintenance, and low wavelength dependence.

Abstract:Optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM) is one of the key components for WDM systems to enable greater connectivity and flexibility of the network. Fiber grating based devices seem to be promising candidates for OADMs. Two types of OADMs based on fiber gratings and circulators are demonstrated. A novel structure with cascaded gratings is proposed to reduce the interferometric crosstalk which severely degrades the system performance in the common structure. The add/drop multiplexing experiments of 4-channel WDM signals indicate that in the cascaded gratings structure there is 8 dB reduction of the crosstalk for the added signal compared with the common structure and a complete suppression of the crosstalk for the dropped signal.

Abstract:Photonic switches have attractive application prospects in optical communication data networks that require dynamic reconfiguration. Integrating optical switching devices with optical fiber, the most widely deployed photonic technology platform, can realize signal transmission and processing in practical applications. Here, we demonstrate the multilevel optical switching using the phase-change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) integrated on a graded-index multimode fiber. This switching process works by exploiting the significant difference in extinction coefficient between the crystalline state and the amorphous state of the GST. Using GST to achieve the switch function, no external energy source is needed to maintain the existing state of the switch, and the device is nonvolatile. This multi-level optical switch is an all-fiber integrated device. We apply GST to the end facets of the graded-index multimode fiber by magnetron sputtering, which is a reflective structure. A pulsing scheme is used to control the optical propagation state of the optical modulation signal to realize the switching function. It can store up to 11 non-volatile reliable and repeatable levels encoded by the pump source laser with a wavelength of 1550 nm. At the same time, the switching process between states is on the order of hundreds of nanoseconds. The present experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of 11 multilevel states in the field of optical fibers commonly used in communications. It can be well coupled with the all-fiber terminal device. It also shows that the device is still applicable in the 1525 nm∼1610 nm broadband range, promising for designing future multilevel photonic switches and memory devices.

Abstract:Two types of four-channel tunable optical add-drop multiplexers(OADM) are demonstrated which are based on fiber Bragg gratings(FBGs),optical circulators and switches. Both of them can dynamically select the drop channel or just bypass all WDM channels. The crosstalk from the adjacent channel is lower than -23dB and the isolation between the drop and add port is higher than 40dB.

Abstract:Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (OADM) is one of the key compo nents for WDM system.Device based on fiber grating is a promising candidate for OADM.In this paper,a novel optical Add/Drop multiplexer using two circulato rs,one isolator and two fiber gratings is proposed.The experiments to evaluate t he performances of the novel device compared to the ordinary one have been condu cted.The experiment results turn out that the signals produce no crosstalk on th e signals on DROP port.Meanwhile,the signals on DROP port produce no crosstalk o n the signals on ADD port either.Therefore,in the novel device,the interferometr ic crosstalk between the ADD and DROP ports is suppressed completely.One more ad vantage of the device is that the peak reflectivity is not crucial in this novel structure.

Abstract:Based on the concepts of the 2-dimension diffraction grating and the planar waveguide array,a novel optical multiplexer/demultiplexer (Mux/Demux) employing the 2-dimension arrayed-waveguide grating is proposed.Since the direction of the diffraction route is determined by the vectorial combination of the dispersion values in two directions,the 2-dimension wavelength demultiplexing can be realized by properly controlling the values of the free spectral ranges.Then the input and output accessing ports of the Mux/Demux can be set in 2 diemnsions,with which the capability to design high-channel-count optical Muxs/Demuxs is improved.The properties and the possible applications of this Mux/Demux are discussed in this paper.

Abstract:We propose an ultra-compact novel wavelength multiplexer employing a (N + 1) × (N + 1) arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) and a polarization-combiner-rotator (PCR) on the SOI platform, to realize a multiplexing for 2N wavelengths with a spacing of Δλ. The (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG works at a bidirectional way to provide two groups of N × 1 wavelength multiplexing with each group having a channel spacing of 2×Δλ, and the central wavelengths of all input channels in one group have a wavelength shift of Δλ with respect to those in the other group. The double channel spacing results in a significant decrease on the footprint of the (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG-based multiplexer compared with a conventional 2N × 1 AWG multiplexer with the same wavelength spacing Δλ. Due to the fact that a single mode fiber is insensitive to the polarization of input light, if we consider short reach datacom applications such as 100/400 GbE, the two separate multiplexing outputs of the (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG can be combined as one output with one half wavelengths working at TE polarization and the other at TM polarization by employing a low loss and broadband PCR. In the experiment, we demonstrate a 16 × 200 GHz multiplexer based on a 9 × 9 AWG. The experimental results show that the on-chip loss of the fabricated multiplexer is 2.7 dB and the loss uniformity is 0.5 dB. The 1-dB and 3-dB bandwidths are >0.56 nm (i.e., 35% of the wavelength spacing) and >1.1 nm (i.e., 69% of the wavelength spacing), respectively. They can also be further increased by decreasing the gap between adjacent input waveguides at the interfaces of star couplers of the designed AWG without inducing an excess loss. The proposed multiplexer has great potential for application to future super large capacity (> Tb/s) data transmission systems.

Abstract:A wavelength tunable optical add-drop multiplexer based on silicon photonic wire waveguides with Bragg-grating-reflectors was demonstrated by tuning the dropping wavelength through thermooptic effect. A 6.6-nm dropping wavelength shift was obtained at a 0.82-W heating power. For the device that is presently polarization-dependent, the 3-dB channel-dropping bandwidth was 0.4 nm and the extinction ratio at the dropping wavelength for port THROUGH was better than 17 dB for assuming 1.6-nm wavelength spacing dense wavelength-division multiplexing. The average tuning speed was about 200 mu s.

Abstract:The optical code-division multiple access(OCDMA) based on fiber Bragg gratings(FBG) and two-dimensional wavelength-time code is studied theoretically and experimentally.A novel OCDMA add-drop multiplexer is introduced to drop a code channel without disturbing the rest code channels.The proposed add-drop multiplexer is cost-effective,and the channel-dropping scheme is verified in a simulation.

Abstract:A new 16-channel optical add-drop multiplexer (OADM), which consists of one planar waveguide concave grating, two main ports, coupled waveguides, sixteen add ports, sixteen drop ports, and sixteen sets of 2 × 2 switches, is proposed. The transmission characteristics of the light detected at the output waveguide are simulated by using a design example. The on-off crosstalks are less than -35.17 dB with the insertion losses of 4.71 to 4.83 dB.

The new device provides flexibility both in add-drop channel wavelength and the total number of the channels, along with its compact size, low insertion loss and high insertion loss uniformity properties, which significantly upgrade the performance of WDM network and facilitates the implementation of the network.

Abstract:We report on a channel drop filter with a mode gap in the propagating mode of a photonic crystal slab that was fabricated on silicon on an insulator wafer. The results, simulated with the 3-dimensional finite-difference time-domain and plane-wave methods, demonstrated that an index-guiding mode for the line defect waveguide of a photonic crystal slab has a band gap at wave vector k = 0.5 for a mainly TM-like light-wave. The mode gap works as a distributed Bragg grating reflector that propagates the light-wave through the line defect waveguide, and can be used as an optical filter. The filter bandwidth was varied from 1–8 nm with an r/a (r: hole radius, a: lattice constant) variation around the wavelength range of 1550–1600 nm. We fabricated a Bragg reflector with a photonic crystal line-defect waveguide and Si-channel waveguides and by measuring the transmittance spectrum found that the Bragg reflector caused abrupt dips in transmittance. These experimental results are consistent with the results of the theoretical analysis described above. Utilizing the Bragg reflector, we fabricated channel dropping filters with photonic crystal slabs connected between channel waveguides and demonstrated their transmittance characteristics. They were highly drop efficient, with a flat-top drop-out spectrum at a wavelength of 1.56 μm and a drop bandwidth of 5.8 nm. Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) optical wavelength demultiplexing is demonstrated by employing multilevel arrayed waveguides as a 2D diffraction grating, named the 2D arrayed waveguide grating (2D-AWG). Since the monochromatic lightwave is diffracted by the 2D-AWG to a series of periodic spots with 2D diffraction orders in both x and y directions while the dispersion direction is never parallel to the x or y direction, we can obtain 2D wavelength demultiplexing exploiting diffraction orders of either the x or y direction. One of the two dispersion components is designed much larger than the other, and the correspondent spatial free spectral range component is set properly to ensure high diffraction efficiency. The input and output ports can also be designed based on the multilevel lightwave circuit (MLC), and their level planes can be tuned parallel to that of the MLC-based 2D-AWG, which makes it feasible to integrate the 2D-AWG with the input port and/or the output port. It provides a promising way to realize large-scale and high-density optical multiplexers/demultiplexers. (C) 2004 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:We propose a silicon photonicgrating coupling scheme for dual-band multiplexing in optical fibers. By utilizing subwavelength grating effective refractive index engineering, a dual-band operating grating coupler and a wavelength-polarization diplexer are designed. Both devices are fabricated on a 220-nm silicon-on-insulator and require only one 220-nm full etch step to facilitate cost-effective production. The subwavelength grating coupler guides S-band and O-band lights from a single-mode fiber into a waveguide as transverse-electric and transverse-magnetic modes, while the subwavelength diplexer separates the two signals into two waveguides. Experimentally, our proposed scheme for coupling and multiplexing can achieve a total insertion loss of –4.26 dB at near 1490 nm and –5.86 dB at near 1310 nm.

Abstract:In this paper, a new type of re-configurable all optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM) with dynamic gain control function is presented. The channel spacing of the input four-wavelength WDM signal is 3.2nm The function of adding and dropping any wavelength component of the signal is demonstrated. The total loss is less than 1dB (The gain of each SOA is set to about 6dB). Under the control of the gain management unit (GMU), the difference of each channel is less than 0.3dB. Due to the transparency of the OADM, it can add/drop different kinds (such as different format or bit rate) of optical signal. In this paper, we also presented the experimental setup and discussed its results. The highest test bit rate of the WDM signal is 2.5Gbit/s. Its applications in the WDM all optical networks are also discussed.
