Abstract:A new methodology of analysis is presented for determining lateral seismic (static plus dynamic) earth pressures on non-yielding walls, underground rigid structures as well as limited sliding and overturning rigid retaining walls. A formulation of the seismic earth pressure for any state in between active and passive conditions is obtained from pseudostatic limit-equilibrium analysis of forces acting on a dynamic intermediate soil wedge. It is found that the seismic earth pressure is composed of three components induced by static weight of soil, seismic inertial force in neutral state of no lateral displacement and relative soil-wall displacement in earthquake, respectively. The former two components are determined by the above pseudo-static formulas, while the third one, by introducing coefficients of lateral soil reaction and stiffness. As a result, the evaluation of the seismic earth pressure is related to soil-wall displacement analysis. Analytical methods are proposed to determine the lateral soil deformation for several common cases with simple soil conditions. The Newmark sliding-block analysis and some free-field solutions are used to evaluate the wall and soil displacements for gravity retaining walls.
