Abstract:In this paper, we first supplement two groups of simplified general solution based on previous work. Those results are in terms of harmonic functions and fit for the cases of multiple eigenvalues. Then by trial and error, we obtain the fundamental solutions for three cases for a piezoelectric infinite media by giving the expressions of harmonic functions. Finally, by use of those solutions, we implement a boundary element method program to perform numerical calculations. The numerical results agree well with the analytical ones. Abstract:A general solution for the equilibrium equations of piezoelectric media under body forces is obtained. With regard to the transversely isotropic piezoelectric material, closed forms for the displacements and electric potential function for an infinite solid loaded with point forces and point charge are then obtained by using the general solution together with potential theory and constructing a kind of harmonic functions. Thus, the fundamental solutions which are utilizable in boundary element method are obtained.

Abstract:Three general solutions are obtained for the coupled dynamic equations for a transversely isotropic piezoelectric medium. These solutions are expressed in terms of the two functions ψ and F, where ψ satisfies a second-degree partial differential equation and F a sixth-degree partial differential equation, respectively. If the terms concerning the derivatives of time are removed, the results become three general solutions for the corresponding equilibrium equations, in which the function F can be represented by functions Fi (i = 1, 2, 3), each of which satisfies a second-degree partial differential equation by utilizing a generalized Almansi theorem; and the solution Wang and Zheng [Int. J. Solids Structures32, 105–115 (1995)] obtained is proved to be consistent with one case of one of the three general solutions. When the constants e15 = e31 = e33 = 0 the piezo-electric coupling is absent; then, two of the solutions reduce to the elasticity general solutions for a transversely isotropie medium, one of which is the result Hu [Acta Scientia Sin.2(2), 145–151 (1953)] obtained; the other one has not been published. Last, the solution in the limiting explicit form for the problem for a half-space with concentrated loads at the boundary is obtained by utilizing the general solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, a general solution for dynamic piezothermoelastic problems of transversely isotropic piezoelectric materials is derived. The general solution reduces to solutions for quasi-static problems when inertia terms are disregarded. The present general solution is similar to that proposed by Ashida et al. in form. But, the derivation is more concise and rigorous without integration operation. Thus, it is more convenient for application. Applying this general solution, the static problem of a half-space subjected to axisymmetric heating and quasi-static problem of response of a rectangular plate are studied. Numerical results are presented.

Abstract:By means of the three-dimensional general solution in displacement functions (weighted harmonic functions) for piezoelectric materials, the general solution of stress components and electric displacements expressed by the displacement functions is derived by use of the constitutive relation and the equilibrium equations. Based on this general solution, a series of problems is solved by the trial-and-error method, including circular plate (or cylinder), annular plate (or hollow cylinder), cone and hollow cone. These problems are circular plates and cylinders under uniform radial or axial tension and electric displacements as well as pure bending, simply-supported circular plates subjected to uniformly distributed loads, rotating disks and circular shafts, cones or hollow cones subjected to concentrated forces plus charge and concentrated force couple at their apex, etc. Analytical solutions to various problems are obtained. When the cone apex angle 2α equals π, the solutions for the cases of concentrated forces plus point charges and torsion reduce to the simple and practical solutions of the half-space problem.

Abstract:Firstly, the extended Boussinesq and Cerruti solutions for point forces and point charge acting on the surface of a transversely isotropic piezoelectric half-space are derived. Secondly, aiming at a series of common three-dimensional contact including spherical contact, a conical indentor and an upright circular flat punch on a transversely isotropic piezoelectric half-space, we solve for their elastic and electric fields in smooth and frictional cases by first evaluating the displacement functions and then differentiating. The displacement functions can be obtained by integrating the extended Boussinesq or Cerruti solutions in the contact region. Then, when only normal pressure is loaded, the stresses in the half-space of PZT-4 piezoelectric ceramic are compared in the figures with those of the transversely isotropic material which are assumed to have the same elastic constants as those of PZT-4. Meanwhile, the electric components in the half-space of PZT-4 piezoelectric ceramic are also shown in the same figures.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the problem of point force and point charge applied in the interior of an infinite two-phase transversely isotropic piezoelectric solid. Based on the general solutions, by using the method of the image source, a series of displacement functions are constructed. The Green's functions are obtained when arbitrary constants are determined by the boundary conditions on the interface. Furthermore, we reduce the present solutions to the extension of Mindlin results and of Lorentz results for semi-infinite transversely isotropic piezoelectric materials by suitable substitutions of boundary conditions on the interface.

Abstract:General solutions for coupled three dimensional equations of piezoelectric media were used in this work to obtain some analytical solutions for free vibration of piezoelectric annular plates. These solutions not only satisfy the governing equations at every point in the concerned region but also satisfy the prescribed boundary conditions at every point on the boundaries. Therefore, they are three-dimensional exact. Numerical results are finally tabulated.

Abstract:Based on the fundamental solutions for transversely isotropic piezoelectric materials, the fundamental solutions of axisymmetric problems are derived by integration and explicit expressions for three possible cases of different characteristic roots and multiple roots are all presented. In the case of s1 ≠ s2 ≠ s3 ≠ s1, based on the Greens functions for semi-infinite piezoelectric body and bimaterial infinite piezoelectric body, the Greens functions for axisymmetric problems of semi-infinite body and bimaterial infinite body are obtained. Taking PZT-4 as an example, numerical computations are conducted by use of the fundamental solutions to axisymmetric problems. Comparison of the calculated results with those of FEM shows good agreement between them.

Abstract:Inverse problems for partial differential equations (PDEs) are of great importance in the areas of applied mathematics, whichcover different mathematical branches including PDEs, functional analysis, nonlinear analysis,optimizations, regularization and numerical analysis. These problems have found wide applicationsin many important engineering areas such as media imaging, remote sensing and image processing.Due to the nature of ill-posedness of such kinds of problems, the techniques of regularizationshould be applied for efficiently solving these problems. However, it is very hard to establisha unified framework for inverse problems of PDEs, due to the variety and complexity of the problems.This paper aims to give an overview on several important inverse problems of PDEs models.Based on the systematic recalls on the origins and specialities of inverse problems for PDEs,we focus on three kinds of PDEs models for inverse problems: electrical impedance tomograph, inverse wave scattering, thermal imaging. The crucial problems of fundamental interests, existing resultsand methods as well as further possible research directions are reviewed. Moreover, we also give asystematic analysis of numerical methods for solving inverse problems for PDEs.

Abstract:First, based on the basic equations of piezoelectricity, the boundary integral formulation is derived by utilizing the reciprocal-work theorem. Second, for the plane problem of piezoelectric media, one general solution in terms of 'harmonic functions' is derived and the fundamental solutions are therefore obtained. Numerical calculations by boundary element method (BEM) are performed to give the stress concentration coefficient of an infinite piezoelectric plane with a circular hole as well as the stress and electric intensity factors of a central crack locating on an infinite plate. Abstract:We study an inverse problem associated with an eddy current model. We first address the ill-posedness of the inverse problem by proving the compactness of the forward map with respect to the conductivity and the non-uniqueness of the recovery process. Then by virtue of non-radiating source conceptions, we establish a regularity result for the tangential trace of the true solution on the boundary, which is necessary to justify our subsequent mathematical formulation. After that, we formulate the inverse problem as a constrained optimization problem with an appropriate regularization and prove the existence and stability of the regularized minimizers. To facilitate the numerical solution of the nonlinear non-convex constrained optimization, we introduce a feasible Lagrangian and its discrete variant. Then the gradient of the objective functional is derived using the adjoint technique. By means of the gradient, a nonlinear conjugate gradient method is formulated for solving the optimization system, and a Sobolev gradient is incorporated to accelerate the iterative process. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:The study on interfacial fracture problem in piezoelectric materials is very important since many smart structures are composite of those materials. Up to now, most of the theoretical researches in this filed are limited to two dimensional problems. In this paper, based on the three dimensional fundamental solutions for two phased transversely isotropic piezoelectric media and the corresponding Somigliana identity, a set of hyper singular integral differential equations is obtained in terms of the displacement discontinuities and the electric potential discontinuity across crack faces. The kernels in the integrals have the singularity of O(1/r 2) . As a special case when the two phased piezoelectric media become homogeneous, the coefficients of the differential parts in these equations equal zero and, therefore, the equations reduce to the hyper singular integral equations. By using of the main part analysis method, the singularity indexes of displacement, electric potential, electric field, electric displacement, strain and stress near the crack tip can be derived.

Abstract:The purpose of the present work is to establish a set of real fundamental solutions for the differential governing equations of three dimensional axisymmetric problems in piezoelectric media. Firstly, conventional complex fundamental solutions are derived by analysis on the eigenvalue problem, and then, Euler’s formula is used to transform them into equivalent real fundamental solutions. As an example of application, the fracture problem of an axisymmetric penny-shaped crack in a piezoelectric layer is resolved by the real fundamental solutions based new method. Theoretical derivation and numerical computation are validated in the special case of a penny-shaped crack in an infinite piezoelectric body. Effects of geometrical parameters and electric-loading coefficient on energy release rates are surveyed and their agreement with the results of existing papers is also indicated. The advantage of such a real fundamental solutions based new method is that it can effectively help to avoid the difficult complex analysis in mixed boundary value problems.

Mathematical and numerical study of an inverse source problem for the biharmonic wave equation

Abstract:In this paper, we study the inverse source problem for the biharmonic wave equation. Mathematically, we characterize the radiating sources and non-radiating sources at a fixed wavenumber. We show that a general source can be decomposed into a radiating source and a non-radiating source. The radiating source can be uniquely determined by Dirichlet boundary measurements at a fixed wavenumber. Moreover, we derive a Lipschitz stability estimate for determining the radiating source. On the other hand, the non-radiating source does not produce any scattered fields outside the support of the source function. Numerically, we propose a novel source reconstruction method based on Fourier series expansion by multi-wavenumber boundary measurements. Numerical experiments are presented to verify the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method.
