Abstract:Based on the structure of the rank-1 matrix and the different unfolding ways of the tensor, we present two types of structured tensors which contain the rank-1 tensors as special cases. We study some properties of the ranks and the best rank-r approximations of the structured tensors. By using the upper-semicontinuity of the matrix rank, we show that for the structured tensors, there always exist the best rank-r approximations. This can help one to better understand the sequential unfolding singular value decomposition (SVD) method for tensors proposed by J. Salmi et al. [IEEE Trans Signal Process, 2009, 57(12): 4719–4733] and offer a generalized way of low rank approximations of tensors. Moreover, we apply the structured tensors to estimate the upper and lower bounds of the best rank-1 approximations of the 3rd-order and 4th-order tensors, and to distinguish the well written and non-well written digits.

Abstract:Given a matrix-valued function , where , , and are known matrices, we first review two known fundamental formulas for calculating the maximum and minimum ranks of the matrix-valued function when X runs over . We then establish some new formulas for calculating the maximum and minimum ranks of when X runs over with a restriction by using a simultaneous decomposition of A, B and C, and some tricky matrix operations. Some applications of the rank formulas in completing partially-specified matrices are also given.

Abstract:Low-rank matrix completion addresses the problem of completing a matrix from a certain set of generic specified entries. Over the complex numbers a matrix with a given entry pattern can be uniquely completed to a specific rank, called the generic completion rank. Completions over the reals may generically have multiple completion ranks, called typical ranks. We demonstrate techniques for proving that many sets of specified entries have only one typical rank, and show other families with two typical ranks, specifically focusing on entry sets represented by circulant graphs. This generalizes the results of Bernstein, Blekherman, and Sinn. In particular, we provide a complete characterization of the set of unspecified entries of an $n\times n$ matrix such that $n-1$ is a typical rank and fully determine the typical ranks for entry set $G(n,1)$ for $n<9$. Moreover, we study the asymptotic behaviour of typical ranks and present results regarding unique matrix completions.

Abstract:We show that the set of $n \times n$ complex symmetric matrix pencils of rank at most $r$ is the union of the closures of $\lfloor r/2\rfloor +1$ sets of matrix pencils with some, explicitly described, complete eigenstructures. As a consequence, these are the generic complete eigenstructures of $n \times n$ complex symmetric matrix pencils of rank at most $r$. We also show that these closures correspond to the irreducible components of the set of $n\times n$ symmetric matrix pencils with rank at most $r$ when considered as an algebraic set.

Abstract:A matrix is blocky if it is a "blowup" of a permutation matrix. The blocky rank of a matrix M is the minimum number of blocky matrices that linearly span M . Hambardzumyan, Hatami and Hatami defined blocky rank and showed that it is connected to communication complexity and operator theory. We describe additional connections to circuit complexity and combinatorics, and we prove upper and lower bounds on blocky rank in various contexts.

Abstract:In this paper, we have considered the dense rank for assigning positions to alternatives in weak orders. If we arrange the alternatives in tiers (i.e., indifference classes), the dense rank assigns position 1 to all the alternatives in the top tier, 2 to all the alternatives in the second tier, and so on. We have proposed a formal framework to analyze the dense rank when compared to other well-known position operators, such as the standard, modified and fractional ranks. As the main results, we have provided two different axiomatic characterizations which determine the dense rank by considering position invariance conditions along horizontal extensions (duplication), as well as through vertical reductions and movements (truncation, and upward or downward independency).

Abstract:Motivated by problems in algebraic complexity theory (e.g., matrix multiplication) and extremal combinatorics (e.g., the cap set problem and the sunflower problem), we introduce the geometric rank as a new tool in the study of tensors and hypergraphs. We prove that the geometric rank is an upper bound on the subrank of tensors and the independence number of hypergraphs. We prove that the geometric rank is smaller than the slice rank of Tao, and relate geometric rank to the analytic rank of Gowers and Wolf in an asymptotic fashion. As a first application, we use geometric rank to prove a tight upper bound on the (border) subrank of the matrix multiplication tensors, matching Strassen's well-known lower bound from 1987.

It is known that the inverse of a structured matrix is structured, which allows fast inversion (or solution), and reduced storage requirements. According to two definitions of displacement structure of practical interest, it is shown here that several types of inverses are also structured, including the Moore-Penrose inverse of rank-deficient matrices.

Abstract:We determine the rank of a random matrix over an arbitrary field with prescribed numbers of non-zero entries in each row and column. As an application we obtain a formula for the rate of low-density parity check codes. This formula vindicates a conjecture of Lelarge (2013). The proofs are based on coupling arguments and a novel random perturbation, applicable to any matrix, that diminishes the number of short linear relations.

Abstract:A matrix space of size $m\times n$ is a linear subspace of the linear space of $m\times n$ matrices over a field $\mathbb{F}$. The rank of a matrix space is defined as the maximal rank over matrices in this space. A matrix space $\mathcal{A}$ is called rank-critical, if any matrix space which properly contains it has rank strictly greater than that of $\mathcal{A}$. In this note, we first exhibit a necessary and sufficient condition for a matrix space $\mathcal{A}$ to be rank-critical, when $\mathbb{F}$ is large enough. This immediately implies the sufficient condition for a matrix space to be rank-critical by Draisma (Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 38(5):764--776, 2006), albeit requiring the field to be slightly larger. We then study rank-critical spaces in the context of compression and primitive matrix spaces. We first show that every rank-critical matrix space can be decomposed into a rank-critical compression matrix space and a rank-critical primitive matrix space. We then prove, using our necessary and sufficient condition, that the block-diagonal direct sum of two rank-critical matrix spaces is rank-critical if and only if both matrix spaces are primitive, when the field is large enough.

Abstract:A ${\mathbb Z}_2\times{\mathbb Z}_2$-graded Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ is a ${\mathbb Z}_2\times{\mathbb Z}_2$-graded algebra $\mathfrak g$ with a bracket $[|. , . |]$ that satisfies certain graded versions of the symmetry and Jacobi identity. In particular, despite the common terminology, $\mathfrak g$ is not a Lie algebra. We construct classes of ${\mathbb Z}_2\times{\mathbb Z}_2$-graded Lie algebras corresponding to the classical Lie algebras, in terms of their defining matrices. For the ${\mathbb Z}_2\times{\mathbb Z}_2$-graded Lie algebra of type $A$, the construction coincides with the previously known class. For the ${\mathbb Z}_2\times{\mathbb Z}_2$-graded Lie algebra of type $B$, $C$ and $D$ our construction is new and gives rise to interesting defining matrices closely related to the classical ones but undoubtedly different. We also give some examples and possible applications to parastatistics.

Abstract:We show that the set of $m \times m$ complex skew-symmetric matrix polynomials of even grade $d$, i.e., of degree at most $d$, and (normal) rank at most $2r$ is the closure of the single set of matrix polynomials with certain, explicitly described, complete eigenstructure. This complete eigenstructure corresponds to the most generic $m \times m$ complex skew-symmetric matrix polynomials of even grade $d$ and rank at most $2r$. The analogous problem for the case of skew-symmetric matrix polynomials of odd grade is solved in [Linear Algebra Appl., 536:1-18, 2018].

Abstract:In this paper, the rank reduction problem for a rectangle matrix pair is investigated. First, the rank reduction problem is defined and it is solved via an algebraic approach. In fact, the proposed method is a procedure for getting the maximal value for the uncertain parameter such that the rank of the perturbed matrix will remain the same. Based on the results, the maximal robust stability radius problem of singular systems has been solved completely. Finally, three examples are used to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:Abstract The subrank of a tensor measures how much a tensor can be diagonalized. We determine this parameter precisely for essentially all (i.e., generic) tensors. Namely, we prove for generic tensors in with that the subrank is . Our result significantly improves on the previous upper bound from the work of Strassen (1991) and Bürgisser (1990) which was . Our result is tight up to an additive constant. Our full result covers not only 3‐tensors but also ‐tensors, for which we find that the generic subrank is . Moreover, as an application, we prove that the subrank is not additive under the direct sum. As a consequence of our result, we obtain several large separations between the subrank and tensor methods that have received much interest recently, notably the slice rank (Tao, 2016), analytic rank (Gowers–Wolf, 2011; Lovett, 2018; Bhrushundi–Harsha–Hatami–Kopparty–Kumar, 2020), geometric rank (Kopparty–Moshkovitz–Zuiddam, 2020), and G‐stable rank (Derksen, 2020). Our proofs of the lower bounds rely on a new technical result about an optimal decomposition of tensor space into structured subspaces, which we think may be of independent interest.

Abstract:We consider the problem of constructing matrices of linear forms of constant rank by focusing on the associated vector bundles on projective spaces. Important examples are given by the classical Steiner bundles, as well as some special (duals of) syzygy bundles that we call Dr{é}zet bundles. Using the classification of globally generated vector bundles with small first Chern class on projective spaces, we are able to describe completely the indecomposable matrices of constant rank up to six; some of them come from rigid homogeneous vector bundles, some other from Dr{é}zet bundles related either to plane quartics or to instanton bundles on the three-dimensional projective space.
