Abstract:To supply continuous and reliable power to the water monitoring systems and motorized control valves in urban water supply networks, the inline cross-flow turbine has been developed. This study aims to investigate the effects of different runner geometries on the performance of inline cross-flow turbines and to determine the optimal runner geometrical parameters. In this paper, a theoretical analysis of the working mechanism of a crossflow runner is first performed to study the impacts of the runner geometry on turbine performance. Thereafter, several turbine models with different runner geometries are built and simulated to analyse the output power, water head reduction and torque generation at each runner stage. The results indicate that a good match between the flow inlet angle and blade outer angle notably enhances the turbine performance. Based on the results, the recommended optimal blade outer angle in this research is 30 degrees. In addition, the results also show that the runner diameter ratio has a major impact on torque generation at the runner first stage. A lower runner diameter ratio leads to a higher output power, but the water head reduction is also higher. Based on the results, the suggested runner diameter ratio is 0.68. A numerical study on the number of blades indicates that when the number of blades increases from 20 to 24, the turbine output power considerably rises, and the maximum output power reaches 2285 W. However, if the blade number is further increased, the variation in output power is very slight. Thus, the proposed optimal blade number is 24. Based on the research results, the maximum turbine efficiency can reach 50.9% after runner optimization.

Abstract:This paper describes the validation of the Reynolds time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations solver with the standard k -emodel for use in modern hydro runner design system. The system consists of the CAD (Computer Aimed Design) and the CFD (Computational Fluid dynamic). The designer can use software CAD to modify the geometric sizes of runner, then employ well-developed CFD technique to calculate flow field. The CAD and CFD can iterate alternately until the reasonable and desired flow field inside the hydro runner is achieved, finally the optimized geometric parameters of the hydro runner are determined. Based on the flow visualization techniques of CFD analysis, modern hydro runner design system is established and applied with a CAD-CFD system. In order to validate the modem hydro runner design system, Two optimum design examples of hydro runners are presented. The velocity distribution and the pressure distribution inside the hydro runner, the runner efficiency and the power are also presented. The comparison between the modern hydro runner design code and the traditional one shows the former is a very useful tool.

Abstract:Analyzing the 3D turbulent flowfield in the hydro turbine runner is significant for improving properties and optimum design level of hydro runner. In this paper, the 3D turbulent flow is simulated based on Navier-Stokes equations and k-ε mode. And at the same time, a modern runner design method is established, in which geometric parameters of the hydro turbine runner are optimized based on the simulation results by a CAD-CFD system. So the flow pattern in the runner are close with the ideal flow pattern and therefore ensure the good properties of the runner.

Abstract:：Based on the modern techniques of analysis on the flow in the hydraulic machinery and the analysis methods for the fluid-structure interaction characteristics，the key elements for the design of the hydraulic machinery runner are discussed herein，and then the technical methods and the achievements in the aspects of the simulation，analysis and prediction made on the physical phenomena inside of the runner，such as vortex，cavitation，pressure pulsation，movement of sediment-laden flow，etc. are presented，furthermore，the cases of the analyses on the fluid-structure interaction characteristics of the resonance and fatigue damage of the runner are showed as well. Moreover，the relevant engineering applications in the aspects of the design of the type-selection of the hydropower generating unit for new hydropower station，the improvement of old hydropower station and the development of new type of hydropower generating unit are analyzed，while the developing trends of the multivariate field computation，runner life prediction and information sharing platform are also prospected.

Abstract:The turbulent flow in Francis turbine runners was simulated by solving Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and the standard k-ε turbulence model in the present work in order to design large hydraulic turbine runners. The X-type runner blade of the turbine results from a advanced design system for hydraulic turbines, in which is applied the software of modifying the blade shape by using CAD technique, and of calculating the flow field by using the three-dimensional turbulent flow analysis. One of the new ideas in runner blade design process is to balance blade load.

Abstract:Hydraulic turbines are usually required to operate in a wide range. The operation at off-design conditions not only reduces the unit efficiency, but also significantly deteriorates the dynamic stability of the turbines. In order to develop a turbine runner with good performances under multi operation conditions, a comprehensive hydraulic improvement has been done of a Francis turbine runner with a multipoint and multi-objective optimization design system. Compared with the initial runner, the runner generated from this method has a satisfactory improvement. In detail, unit efficiencies of the preferred runner are increased by 0.91%, 0.47% and 0.37%, respectively, under the rated head, a high head and the maximum head. The lowest pressure at blade surface is improved by 376.2 kPa under the rated head. CFD calculations are conducted to analyze the flow conditions inside of the preferred runner. In addition, runners with different main design inputs, namely blade lean, blade loading and blade meridional shape are furtherly investigated to reveal their relationship with runner’s internal flow and outer performances. In summary, this optimization system supplies satisfactory results and convincing recommendations to determine the design inputs for low-head Francis turbine runners.

Abstract:The inline cross-flow turbine is a promising and reliable device to harvest hydropower in an urban water supply pipeline for power supply to its water supply monitoring system. However, investigations about the influencing factors on the performance of inline cross-flow turbines are still rare and this paper focuses on the effect of their runner inlet arc angle for improving the device's performance. Firstly, a mathematical design method for the turbine's blocks is developed. With the proposed method, four models with different runner inlet arc angles are developed. The turbine's performance, function of conversion block, flow velocity characteristics, pressure distribution and blades torque output of the models are then analyzed. Results indicate that a smaller runner inlet arc can increase the flow velocity at runner inlet and pressure difference between the upstream and downstream of the runner, resulting in a higher output power but also a higher overall water head reduction through the turbine. Besides, it is found that the runner inlet arc angle has a significant influence on the power output of runner second stage. With the increase of runner inlet arc angle, the torque output at the second stage encounters a gradual decrease. To achieve a good balance between turbine efficiency and water head reduction, the suggested runner inlet arc angle is 105 degrees. Numerical results showed that the model with 105 degrees runner inlet arc angle could produce a maximum power generation efficiency of 42.6% with about 1.6 kW power output. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:A three-dimensional reverse design method developed for high-head pump-turbine runners assigns the flow parameters based on the pump design and calculates the runner design from the turbine direction. The flow in this runner design was then analyzed using a three-dimensional turbulent simulation to estimate the runner performance. The result indicates that the method can be used to design pump-turbine runners with considertion of both the pump and turbine designs.

Abstract:With the increasing emphasis on clean energy, there is growing attention to the use of microturbines or pumps as turbines (PATs) to recover excess hydraulic energy in the water supply system (WSS) of high-rise buildings. In this paper, a micro Francis turbine for WSS in high-rise buildings was presented, and the effects of runner geometric parameters on turbine performance were investigated through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and lab tests. In the research process, based on the theoretical design results and the numerical optimization of blade exit angle and blade shape, a turbine model was obtained for laboratory testing. The test results show that the Francis turbine has a relatively good performance in both energy generation and water head reduction. In addition, the feasibility of the used runner design method was verified in this special working condition by comparing the experimental performance of turbines with different runner inlet widths. Based on a numerical model that has been validated by experimental results, further optimization for blade thickness and blade number was carried out through CFD simulations. The simulation results show that blade thickness and blade number can affect energy consumption and pressure distribution in the runner and thus affect turbine performance, and there are optimal values to achieve optimal turbine performance. And the optimized model had an output power of 148 W and an efficiency of 21.23% at the design condition.

Abstract:As a type of reliable renewable energy, tidal energy has great potential for development. But its technology is behind other renewable energy sources. One of the constraints is the efficiency and stability of tidal turbine. The objective of the present work is to optimize a rim-generator turbine runner by improving hydraulic performance and stress level. A multi-objective optimization based on the response surface methodology is adopted during the optimization process so that an optimal runner blade can be identified. Both the blade shape and the number of the blade are determined. The numerical method is verified by comparing with the experimental test, and the numerical results show good agreement with the experimental results. The hydraulic losses in the ebb generation mode and the flood generation mode are compared, and the mechanism of the difference of the hydraulic losses between the two modes are analyzed, especially the hydraulic losses in the guide vanes. The stress analysis based on the fluid-structure interaction theory shows the optimized rim-generator turbine runner has good structural strength. This work could contribute to the development of the rim-generator turbine, and further to the utilization of the tidal energy.

Hydraulic Improvement to Eliminate S-Shaped Curve in Pump Turbine

Abstract:For pump turbines, an S-shaped curve can lead to failures in synchronization. To improve the hydraulic design, the component that is responsible for the formation of the S-shaped curve was identified by a hydraulic loss analysis using previous computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results, which indicates that the formation of the S-shaped curve can be ascribed to the runner. To improve the hydraulic design of the runner, a simple numerical approach for direct problem analysis was proposed, based on the blade-loading distributions of runners with and without an S-shaped curve, and directly analyzed. It was implied from the differences in the blade-loading distributions that, when the meridional passage was broadened, the formation of the S-shaped curve was suppressed. To validate this, two runners with different meridional sections were designed by means of the inverse design method. Through model tests, it was verified that the S-shaped curve was eliminated completely and the performance curve of the modified hydraulic model satisfied the requirements for safe operation in a pumped storage plant.
Effects of Different Block Designs on the Performance of Inline Cross-Flow Turbines in Urban Water Mains

Abstract:Cross-flow turbines offer a promising, cost-effective solution to harvest hydropower from water mains to supply power to water monitoring systems. However, the design and performance of cross-flow turbines in water mains have not been fully investigated. In this paper, an inline cross-flow turbine configuration with two blocks is proposed and a block design method is presented. Specifically, numerical investigations are carried out to verify the proposed method and study the effect of different block designs on turbine performance. Flow velocity analysis shows that the proposed block can improve the flow attack angle at the runner inlet and significantly increase the flow velocity through the runner. In addition, the pressure distribution indicates that the blocks can increase the pressure difference through the runner and thus improve turbine performance. A comparison of three models with different guide block orientation angles reveals that the model with the largest conversion block orientation angle performs best, because the blocks from this model not only function better in terms of flow separation and negative torque reduction at the first stage, but also convert more water head into kinetic energy. Numerical results show that the inline turbine can achieve its maximum efficiency of 42.4% with a power output of about 1500 W and that the water head reduction is limited within an acceptable range.

Abstract:As a key component of reversible pump-turbine unit, pump-turbine runner rotates at pump or turbine direction according to the demand of power grid, so higher efficiencies under both operating modes have great importance for energy saving. In the present paper, a multiobjective optimization design strategy, which includes 3D inverse design method, CFD calculations, response surface method (RSM) and multiobjective genetic algorithm (MOGA), is introduced to develop a model pump-turbine runner for middle-high head pumped storage plant. Parameters that controlling blade shape, such as blade loading and blade lean angle at high pressure side are chosen as input parameters, while runner efficiencies under both pump and turbine modes are selected as objective functions. In order to validate the availability of the optimization design system, one runner configuration from Pareto front is manufactured for experimental research. Test results show that the highest unit efficiency is 91.0% under turbine mode and 90.8% under pump mode for the designed runner, of which prototype efficiencies are 93.88% and 93.27% respectively. Viscous CFD calculations for full passage model are also conducted, which aim at finding out the hydraulic improvement from internal flow analyses.

Abstract:For reversible pump turbines, a sufficient hump safety margin has to be provided under small-flow and high-head conditions to avoid instability resulting from operations in the hump-shaped zone. On the other hand, under large flow conditions, cavitation easily occurs on the low-pressure edge of runner blades due to effects of low pressure and flow separation, sharply reducing the efficiency and lift head. Therefore, the hydraulic design of the pump turbine in pump mode is crucial for the properties of energy, cavitation and stability of the whole unit. A model runner (runner A) designed for a pumped storage power plant in China was demonstrated with insufficient hump safety margin and poor cavitation performance. To improve those deficiencies, optimization design was carried out on the geometric dimensions of the runner A, based on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses and model test results. The final model runner B was designed with less blade number Z and large blade wrap angle θ, to both alleviate the flow separation around the lower pressure edge of the blade and the non-uniform velocity distribution in the outlet area around high pressure edge. The model test results show that in comparison with the original runner A, the performances, such as efficiency, hump safety margin, cavitation and stability are improved in runner B.

Abstract:A full three dimension inverse method of designing the Fransis runner is presented, which can take into account the circumferentially nonuniform flow, thickness of blade and rotational flow in the inlet of the runner. In the method, distribution of circumferentially averaged swirl velocity V��R on the meridional geometry of runner is prescribed, the 3-D flow field and the corresponding blade shape are computed iteratively. Comparing the results calculated by this method with those by the others shows the swirl velocity V��R on the blade computed by the method is more corresponding to the specified VthetaR and the 3-D flow field can be used to calculate the cavitation factor and estimate efficiency. Therefore this method can raise the controllability of performance of the turbine runner in the process of designing.
Three-dimensional Matching Design Method for Runner Blades and Guide Vanes of Tubular Turbine

Abstract:In this paper a full three-dimensional coupled design model for runner blades and guide vanes of bulb tubular turbine is developed to simulate behaviors of guide vane wake flow that has significant influence on the inflow of runner blades.The runner blade and guide vane are designed together with simultaneous solution of equations for a flow domain that covers both blades.A design of low-head tubular turbine is worked out by the coupled model and a separate model,respectively,and a numerical simulation of turbulent flow is made for the design operation mode.Performance prediction indicates that the static pressure distribution on the leading edge of runner blades designed by the coupled model is better than that by the separate model,and that the hydraulic loss is lower and the runner＇s efficiency is higher.

Abstract:The geometry of blade high-pressure side has significant effects on the performance of pump-turbine at both design and off-design operating point. This paper presents a runner optimization strategy which especially focuses on the blade high-pressure side to increase the efficiency of design points at both pump and turbine modes. First, the concepts of “swept,” “bowed (lean),” and “twisted” are introduced to systematically widen the design space. Then, a multi-objective optimization design system consisting of geometry generation, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), design of experiment, approximation model, and a multi-objective genetic algorithm is built and the optimized plan is selected from the Pareto front of the last generation. Compared with the original runner, the optimized runner can increase the efficiency by 1.17% and 0.46% for the pump and turbine modes, respectively. Moreover, the pump mode is more sensitive to the uniform design in the spanwise direction at the high-pressure side than the turbine mode. Detailed hydraulic loss analyses and local entropy production rate analyses reveal that for both pump mode and turbine mode, the optimized runner can significantly decrease the hydraulic loss in the downstream domains of high-pressure side. The geometry of blade high-pressure side has remarkable effects on hydraulic loss and more attention should be paid in design stage.
Coupled design and optimization for runner blades of a tubular turbine based on the boundary vorticity dynamics theory

Abstract:In this paper the Boundary Vorticity Dynamics Theory is applied to optimize the runner blade shape of a bulb tubular turbine, based on a three-dimensional coupled design model. The initial spatial runner blades and guide vanes are designed together with the simultaneous equations solved in the flow domain involving them. Since the wake flow behavior of guide vanes influencing the inflow condition of runner blades is taken account of, compared with that on separate design method, the static pressure distribution obtained on coupled model is improved near the inlet of the blades. Thus the effective head becomes higher and the runner's efficiency rises. To improve the performance on the design point, the boundary vorticity flux(BVF) on the runner blade surfaces is simulated to analyze its effect to the unit output emphatically. The runner blade shape is modified by changing the prescribed distribution of swirl according to the diagnosed position where the flow behavior is defective. The static pressure on optimized runner blades varies indistinctly, which is difficult to estimate the flow behavior. Nevertheless the BVF distribution indicates that near the hub of the pressure surface the negative effect on the output becomes weak, and negative region near the leading edge reduces obviously in area, which results in the further rise of runner's efficiency. The result shows that the BVF distribution on blade surfaces can more potently reflect the performance of tubular turbines and provide reliable solution for shape optimization. Optimization of the Runner for Extremely Low Head Bidirectional Tidal Bulb Turbine

Abstract:This paper presents a multi-objective optimization procedure for bidirectional bulb turbine runners which is completed using ANSYS Workbench. The optimization procedure is able to check many more geometries with less manual work. In the procedure, the initial blade shape is parameterized, the inlet and outlet angles (β1, β2), as well as the starting and ending wrap angles (θ1, θ2) for the five sections of the blade profile, are selected as design variables, and the optimization target is set to obtain the maximum of the overall efficiency for the ebb and flood turbine modes. For the flow analysis, the ANSYS CFX code, with a SST (Shear Stress Transport) k-ω turbulence model, has been used to evaluate the efficiency of the turbine. An efficient response surface model relating the design parameters and the objective functions is obtained. The optimization strategy was used to optimize a model bulb turbine runner. Model tests were carried out to validate the final designs and the design procedure. For the four-bladed turbine, the efficiency improvement is 5.5% in the ebb operation direction, and 2.9% in the flood operation direction, as well as 4.3% and 4.5% for the three-bladed turbine. Numerical simulations were then performed to analyze the pressure pulsation in the pressure and suction sides of the blade for the prototype turbine with optimal four-bladed and three-bladed runners. The results show that the runner rotational frequency (fn) is the dominant frequency of the pressure pulsations in the blades for ebb and flood turbine modes, and the gravitational effect, rather than rotor-stator interaction (RSI), plays an important role in a low head horizontal axial turbine. The amplitudes of the pressure pulsations on the blade side facing the guide vanes varies little with the water head. However, the amplitudes of the pressure pulsations on the blade side facing the diffusion tube linearly increase with the water head. These results could provide valuable insight for reducing the pressure amplitudes in the bidirectional bulb turbine.

Abstract:Hydraulic and structural performances are two main subjects in the optimization design of hydraulic machines. This article gives consideration to both hydraulic and structural performances during the optimization process of hydraulic turbine with main and splitter blades on the basis of Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO). The aim is to improve the optimization methods of hydraulic turbine, shorten the development cycle time and ensure stable and efficient operation of the unit. Computational fluid dynamics(CFD) and finite element method(FEM) analysis are combined to improve the overall performance of the runner in the multidisciplinary optimization process. The optimization considers the whole runner including the crown and band to get more accurate results of stress distribution. Open Grip program was used to parameterize runner blade and Bezier curve was used to match the bone line and it changed the blades through transforming the bone lines of different profile. NSGA-II algorithm was adopted during the optimization calculation. What's more, super transfer approximation method was used to obtain the weighted coefficients considering the overall performance under three operating conditions, based on this, the final optimization result was obtained. The whole performance of optimized runner gets improved and has a better outflow quality. Also, it provides a feasible method for engineering application in the multidisciplinary optimization design of runner blades.
