Abstract:Undulator phase error was expressed as a function of magnet peak field distribution. It can be used as an objective function for practical undulator performance optimization. A simple computation formula was given for the field signature of the shims to predict the field and phase perturbation according the shim position, size, thickness and magnet gap.

Abstract:This paper presents a new passive shimming (PS) design scheme for the correction of static magnetic-field inhomogeneities in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems. In MRI, the PS procedure usually employs magnetic-field-based or harmonic-based methods to find an optimal iron-piece configuration to improve the uniformity of the static magnetic field in the imaging region. For the field-based PS technique, the peak-to-peak field inhomogeneity is minimized, and the harmonic components are inherently unconstrained; in the harmonic-based scheme, selected unwanted harmonics are minimized, and the overall field uniformity is consequently reduced. The field approach usually provides good field homogeneity but lacks flexibility in managing all terms of spherical harmonic field expansion; the harmonic approach is capable of controlling targeted low-order harmonic terms but can have difficulty in producing optimal overall field homogeneity and in controlling high-order harmonics. The new algorithm proposed herein attempts to combine the strengths of these two methods for a better PS solution. During the PS implementation, an explicit expression of the system matrix with both the field and harmonic sensitivities is generated, and then, an optimization procedure is performed for the determination of shim-piece thicknesses and locations. A case study presented shows that the hybrid method provides good quality, flexible solutions for controlling individual harmonic impurities, and also overall field uniformity. This method is not only applicable to conventional MRI magnets, but also, its flexibility means that it can be easily used to shim unconventional electromagnets.

Abstract:In a magnetic resonance imaging system, the magnetic field homogeneity of the imaging area plays a decisive role on the image quality. The passive shimming technique uses ferromagnetic material to eliminate the field impurity in the imaging area. In existing passive shimming algorithms, the target magnetic field (TMF) was usually set as a fixed value, such as the DC component of the magnetic field, leading to a rigid constraint to the formed optimization model, and it may cause shimming inefficiency or even failure. In this paper, an optimal target magnetic field (OTMF) method was proposed, which set the TMF as an optimization variable built in a linear programming model. In the established optimization problem, no extra computational burden was involved. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, the bare magnetic field of a 3.0-T superconducting magnet was shimmed. Compared with conventional linear programming methods, the proposed scheme could provide better shimming solution with higher field homogeneity and less consumption of ferromagnetic material.

Abstract:The uniformity of the static magnetic field B0 is of prime importance for an MRI system. The passive shimming technique is usually applied to improve the uniformity of the static field by optimizing the layout of a series of steel shims. The steel pieces are fixed in the drawers in the inner bore of the superconducting magnet, and produce a magnetizing field in the imaging region to compensate for the inhomogeneity of the B0 field. In practice, the total mass of steel used for shimming should be minimized, in addition to the field uniformity requirement. This is because the presence of steel shims may introduce a thermal stability problem. The passive shimming procedure is typically realized using the linear programming (LP) method. The LP approach however, is generally slow and also has difficulty balancing the field quality and the total amount of steel for shimming. In this paper, we have developed a new algorithm that is better able to balance the dual constraints of field uniformity and the total mass of the shims. The least square method is used to minimize the magnetic field inhomogeneity over the imaging surface with the total mass of steel being controlled by an L1-norm based constraint. The proposed algorithm has been tested with practical field data, and the results show that, with similar computational cost and mass of shim material, the new algorithm achieves superior field uniformity (43% better for the test case) compared with the conventional linear programming approach.

Abstract:Construction of an undulator includes magnet block measurement,sorting,field measurement and adjustment.Optimizing SDUV-FEL undulator by simulated annealing algorithm using measurement results of the magnet blocks by Helmholtz coil before installing undulator magnets, the cost function can be reduced by three orders of magnitude.The practical parameters of one segment meet the design specifications after adjusting the magnetic field.

Abstract:The hybrid undulator, is optimized in beam direction based on transverse optimization developed in ESRF. The thickness of the magnet and the pole is optimized at the ratio of 16∶9 for the maximized peak field. The analytical equations for designing the hybrid undulator are listed and discussed. One prototype hybrid undulator with 25mm period length is being constructed with NdFeB magnets and vanadium permendur poles by the optimized results. The magnet gap of the hybrid undulator can be tunable in 10～300mm. At 10mm magnetic gap, the undulator peak field can reach 0.648T with only the main magnet. It can be enhanced to 0.722T and 0.773T by further adding the side magnet and top magnet. The field resolution is better than 10~(-4)T with 1μm gap tuning system driven by servomotor. All optimization are based on 3-dimensional finite element electromagnetic computation, the Opera3d. The typical technical parameters of the hybrid undulator are listed. The computed induction field in the beam axis and in the middle plane of the hybrid undulator is respectively shown, which illustrates that the optimized configuration has more than 10mm good field region. The field distribution in the pole surface shows that it already reaches saturation with the present NdFeB magnets and vanadium permendur pole technology.

Abstract:The mass production of the first stage of HEPS (High Energy Photon Source) is approaching its final stage. 6 CPMUs (cryogenic permanent magnet undulators) have been manufactured, with four successfully finalizing the tuning of the magnetic field. To ensure radiation performance, HEPS's CPMUs enforce stringent phase error protocols. Moreover, the contraction properties at cryogenic temperature lead to a decrease in phase error after cooling. In the process of CPMU commissioning, a technique for forecasting the change of magnetic errors from room to cryogenic temperature was discovered and studied, as will be demonstrated in this paper.

Abstract:There is an empirical formula describing the relationship between the peak magnetic field and the undulator structure parameters for a uniform-parameter hybrid undulator. In this paper, we investigate the relationship for a linearly tapered undulator through numerical calculation by using the code RADIA, and check it with the empirical formula. The results imply that this empirical formula is also effective for linearly tapered undulators at a big enough scope for the requirements of normal FEL experiments. Therefore, for a linearly tapered undulator, we can use the empirical formula to design the variation of the undulator gap. For the tapering rate demanded by normal FEL experiments, the gap of a linearly tapered undulator increases almost linearly, and the tapering rate will keep constant while adjusting the undulator gap with the same variation for each undulator period.

Abstract:China Institute of Atomic Energy has developed a 230 MeV compact superconducting cyclotron CYCIAE-230 to meet the demands of proton therapy in China. Physical design requires a strict control of the average field error and first harmonic in the main field. A processing method of inclined 45 degrees continuous cutting on the two pole sides is at the first time proposed to shim the field in compact superconducting cyclotron. For a spiral magnet pole, the field generated by the 45 degrees continuous cutting on edges is relatively complicated to be calculated precisely by finite element method. In this paper, the analytical model of the linear equation for field shimming calculation is established. The shape function caused by the local cutting is solved by the magnetic saturation approximation. And then the shimming process is built with an iterative procedure based on the ridge regression method. The shimming algorithm is applied in CYCIAE-230, which achieve good results to reduce the shimming times and further the construction period. The process of the shimming algorithm and the corresponding shimming effect in CYCIAE-230 will be presented in detail.

Abstract:This paper presents a useful and simple method to design the passive shimming system for homogeneous permanent magnets based on numerical optimization. To simulate the effects of manufacturing and assembling tolerances, the actual geometrical parameter of the magnet with a derivation is suggested. Then, the optimal design model of a passive shim system is set up to correct the derivative of field homogeneity. The numbers, sizes and locations of the passive shims are optimized by steepest descent algrithm combined with design sensitivity analysis. Two implementations show the proposed method can achieve required homogeneity of the field with the minimum quantity of ferromagnetics.

Abstract:Design of end magnetic structures for a hybrid undulator is very complicated.In this article,magnetic field calculation was carried out using the Radia code,aimed to optimize the end magnetic structures for the Shanghai DUV-FEL hybrid undulator with a fixed gap.Without electromagnet correction,the first and second field integrals of the hybrid undulator were almost zero by reducing sizes of the two final magnets and positioning the two end poles.After the shield was added outside the final magnet,the fringe fields were lower than 5×10~(-4) T off 10 mm to the final magnet.
Optimization of Permanent-Magnet Undulator Magnets Ordering Using Simulated Annealing Algorithm

Abstract:Pure permanent-magnet undulator consists of many magnets. The unavoidable remanence divergence of these magnets causes the undulator magnetic field error, which will affect the functional mode of the storage ring and the quality of the spontaneous emission spectrum. Optimizing permanent-magnet undulator magnets ordering using simulated annealing algorithm before installing undulator magnets, the first field integral can be reduced to 10~(-6) T·m, the second integral to 10~(-6) T·m~2 and the peak field error to less than 10~(-4). The optimized results are independent of the initial solution. This paper gives the optimizing process in detail and puts forward a method to quickly calculate the peak field error and field integral according to the magnet remanence.

Abstract:In order to adequately eliminate 1st harmonic in the magnetic field of the compact cyclotron, CIAE has developed a 1st harmonic shimming method that can be applied to the four-sector compact cyclotron. The amplitude of the 1st harmonic can be reduced by adjusting the azimuthal width of the shimming bars at both sides of the sector in this method. Based on the beam dynamics requirement on the amplitude of 1st harmonic, the principle of 1st harmonic shimming method is illustrated through numerical analysis, and meanwhile, the shimming has been implemented on the magnet of CYCIAE-CRM by processing the azimuthal width using NC milling machining. The shimming result shows that it satisfies the requirement of beam dynamics. The shimming effect using this method is also analyzed and expounded in detail. The extension of this method is conducted so that it can be used to shim βθ at the median plane induced by the installation error of the upper and lower sector poles.

Abstract:A new class of asymmetric planar undulators, in which the upper and lower pure-permanent-magnet arrays have different period lengths, is proposed and studied. Through optimizing the period lengths, the amplitudes of magnetic fields and the phase shift between the two magnet arrays, the asymmetric undulators are capable of generating different types of magnetic fields. Various undulator radiations characterized by different features can be achieved, such as suppressing the high harmonic radiation or generating the partially circularly polarized radiation in the off-axis orbit and reducing the on-axis heat load. The undulator designs and the corresponding radiation characteristics are numerically studied and analyzed with some practical considerations to verify the potential applications of the asymmetric undulators.

Abstract:Background Considering the nonlinearity of magnet material, the homogeneity of the material and the accuracy of the finite element numerical simulation, sufficient safety margin of the sector is left in the design of the main magnet. In order to obtain ideal isochronous magnetic field after the machining and assembling the magnet, the shimming procedure is necessary according to the actual measured magnetic field. It can ensure the safe implementation of the project. [Purpose] This study aims at the magnet shimming method that is very important for the design and manufacture of the main magnet of cyclotron. [Methods] First of all, the influence of different cutting parameters of magnet pole on the magnetic field in the middle plane was investigated by using the finite element analysis software TOSCA. Then the superposition effect of adjacent grooves on magnetic field was considered to give a numerical method for calculating the shimming value of the sectors. [Result&Conclusion] The feasibility of magnetic field shimming method was verified by simulation, which provides an effective basis for actual magnetic field shimming in the future.
Fundamental and Harmonic Induction Fields in PPM Undulator

Abstract:The standard pure permanent magnet (PPM) undulator has been analyzed by 3-dimensional electromagnetic computation software, the Modeller in Opera3D. The amplitude and phase angle of fundamental and harmonic induction fields in it are given for different air gaps. They show that all harmonic induction fields in standard PPM undulator are two orders lower than their fundamental induction field. This conclusion is verified by the related magnetic measurements to one standard PPM undulator in optical klystron with 0.5mm×1mm Hall probe. The paper also presents comparisons between theoretic results with analysis equation as well as 3D Finite Element computations and magnetic measurement with hall probe. In furthermore, inserted very small airgaps along beam direction in PPM undulator, leaving space for shimming optimization, are conducive to better radiation performance.

Abstract:The undulator is the core device for producing high-energy synchrotron radiation light in Synchrotron Radiation and Free Electron Laser facilities. The long-term operation of the undulator is bound to be damaged by radiation. Furthermore, this radiation damage leads to the reduction or even demagnetization of the magnetic field, directly affecting the electron beam's operating state and the light's performance and stability. This magnetic measurement system aims to monitor the magnetic flux change to obtain the undulator's local magnetic field disturbance or decay. Moreover, this system provides a way to get phase errors and electron trajectories by estimating the half-period magnetic field integrals for each magnetic pole. The measurement experiments on the undulator in SSRF are in progress.

Abstract:It is important to understand the influence of wigglers and undulators on the beam dynamics in design and optimization of a storage ring, especially when the storage ring runs on a low emittance mode. We present an analytic model of the undulator field in HLS, which can be used in the tracking study to evaluate the effects of it. Coefficients needed by the model are generated by fitting to the results of a numerical field caculation. Fringe fields are included in this model. Then we use three different methods to track particles through the undulator, and compare the results.
Shimming Method for Permanent Magnet of Open-Type Low-Field MRI

Abstract:In the process of producing a permanent magnet,shimming is one of the key techniques for improving the efficiency and quality.At present,for the domestic manufacturers,the shimming methods of the open type low-field MRI lack the support of an integral theory.For this reason,the spherical harmonic function is introduced in analyzing the magnetic field and establishing the project both for active and passive shimming.The low-order terms of the spherical harmonic expansion can be easily shimmed by using the shim coil system.However,when the requirements exceed the capabilities of the corresponding active shim device,and when the high-order distortions require to be cancelled,passive shimming is applicable.In the experiment,the shim coils for the A~0_3 term that require heavy current can not be realized.Therefore,this paper adopts permanent magnetic material instead of shim coils,achieving good compensation for the magnetic field.
