Abstract:We found the large magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in La0.6Ca0.3Pb0.1MnO3 (sample No. 1), La0.7Ca0.2Pb0.1MnO3 (sample No. 2), and La0.7Ca0.1Pb0.2MnO3 (sample No. 3) perovskites, which were prepared by a conventional ceramic method. For a magnetic field change of 13.5 kOe, the magnetic entropy change (Delta S-M) reached values of 2.55, 2.53 and 3.72 J/kg K for samples Nos. 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Interestingly, the large Delta S-M was found to occur around 300 K for all samples investigated, which allows magnetic refrigeration at room temperature. These perovskites have the large magnetic entropy changes induced by low magnetic field change, which is beneficial for the household application of active magnetic refrigerant (AMR) materials. Abstract:Magnetic refrigeration technology is based on magnetic substances as working medium and achieve refrigeration by isothermal magnetization and adiabatic demagnetization. It displays a great potential for development of high-tech refrigeration technology. Compared to traditional gas-compression refrigeration, magnetic refrigeration is favored by more and more researchers due to its energy-efficient and environmentally friendly superiority. Recent studies indicate that molecular-based magnetic refrigerant materials exhibit great advantage in this field, compared with the alloy and nano magnetic refrigeration materials. In this review, the reported molecule-based magnetic refrigeration materials and our own work are summarized and discussed, and the development trends were evaluated.

Abstract:Magnetic cooling technology based on the magnetocaloric effect is a prominent research topic due to its great potential helps to solve the increasing energy need and environmental problems arising from existing technologies. Studies on magnetic cooling systems mainly include both engineering works and material research activities. This review principally covers the material research part of these studies and presents the current developments in them. Specifically, this review focuses on perovskite manganites due to their various advantages over other material families, such as large working temperature range, adjustable Curie temperature, easy production methods and low costs, chemical stability, negligible thermal and magnetic hysteresis properties. In accordance with these properties, important research points such as crystal structure, mismatch effect, magnetic properties, etc., related to the perovskite manganite materials are evaluated and interpreted. Additionally, progress on some prominent material families rather than perovskites is also briefly discussed.

Abstract:The discovery of the giant room temperature magnetocaloric effect (MCE) has renewed a remarkable research interest in the field of magnetocaloric materials at low temperatures. Among the various magnetocaloric refrigerants, rare-earth transition-metal oxides are one of the most promising candidates for low-temperature applications. In this study, the magnetic properties of rare-earth transition-metal oxides and their research status are reviewed. Three different systems are introduced in the review: (1) Manganates including RMnO3, RMn2O5 and R2Mn2O7 series; (2) Chromates including RCrO3 and RCrO4 series; (3) Vanadates including RVO3 and RVO4 series. The strong correlation of magnetocaloric effect of materials with crystal structure and magnetic phase transition is summarized. The origin of large MCE and potential applications of these materials are discussed. The purpose of the review is to provide a new idea for the selection, search and design of magnetic materials with enhanced MCE, and to promote the development of low-temperature magnetic refrigeration technology.

Abstract:This research reports the findings of large low-field magnetocaloric effect in polycrystalline Pr1-xPbxMnO3 (0.1 <= x <= 0.5) perovskites. It is found that, upon an applied field of 13.5 kOe, the magnetic entropy change (Delta S-M) reached values of 3.91, 3.68, and 3.34 J/kg K for x=0.1, 0.4, and 0.5 compositions, respectively. These values are larger than that of Gd (3.32 J/kg K) and were attained by a low applied magnetic field that can be generated by permanent magnets. These superior magnetocaloric features together with a relatively low material cost make the Pr1-xPbxMnO3 perovskites attractive candidate materials for magnetic refrigerators in a temperature range of 150-270 K. Abstract:The dependence of magnetization on the applied magnetic field and temperature was measured carefully near their Curie temperature for polycrystalline perovskite-type manganese oxides La1−xNaxMnO3 (0.05 < X ≤ 0.20) prepared by sol-gel technique. The large magnetic entropy changes upon an application of a low magnetic field and the convenient adjustment of the Curie temperature make the perovskite-type manganese oxides useful for magnetic refrigerants in an extended high temperature range even at room temperature.

Abstract:Magnetic refrigeration based on the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of materials is a potential technique that has prominet advantages over the currently used gas compression-expansion technique in the sense of its high efficiency and environment friendship. In this article, our recent progress in explorating effective MCE materials is reviewed with the emphasis on the MCE in the LaFe13-xSix-based alloys with a first order magnetic transition discovered by us. These alloys show large entropy changes in a wide temperature range near room temperature. Effects of magnetic rare-earth doping, interstitial atom, and high pressure on the MCE have been systematically studied. Special issues such as appropriate approaches to determining the MCE associated with the first-order magnetic transition, the depression of magnetic and thermal hystereses, and the key factors determining the magnetic exchange in alloys of this kind are discussed. The applicability of the giant MCE materials to the magnetic refrigeration near ambient temperature is evaluated. A brief review of other materials with significant MCE is also presented in the article.

Abstract:The magnetic functional materials play a particularly important role in our modern society and daily life. The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) is at the basis of a solid state magnetic refrigeration (MR) technology which may enhance the efficiency of cooling systems, both for room temperature and cryogenic applications. Despite numerous experimental and theoretical MCE studies, commercial MR systems are still at developing stage. Designing magnetic solids with outstanding magnetocaloric performances remains therefore a most urgent task. Herein, recent progresses on characterizing the crystal structure, magnetic properties and cryogenic MCE of rare earths (RE)-based RE2TMTM’O6 double perovskite (DP) oxides, where TM and TM’ are different 3d transition metals, are summarized. Some Gd-based DP oxides are found to exhibit promising cryogenic magnetocaloric performances which make them attractive for active MR applications.

Abstract:Magnetic refrigeration based on magnetocaloric effect (MCE) has become a promising alternative technique to the traditional gas-compression refrigeration due to its friendly environment and high energy efficiency. In addition to room temperature magnetic refrigeration, this novel technology can be applied at low temperature, especially for the potential applications in gas liquefaction. Therefore, attention has been paid to explore suitable materials with large MCE near the gas liquefaction temperature and develop low temperature magnetic refrigerators. Herein, the typical magnetocaloric materials and prototypes in the temperature range of nitrogen and hydrogen liquefaction are reviewed. Heavy rare earth intermetallic compounds are promising for low temperature magnetic refrigeration due to a low ordering temperature and large magnetic moments. For example, DyFeSi compound shows a large reversible MCE under a low field change of 1 T around T C  = 70 K, which is near the liquefaction temperature of nitrogen (77 K). It has been proposed that a composite can be formed by a group of magnetic refrigeration materials with successive transition temperatures and nearly constant MCEs, therefore expanding the range of working temperature desirable for Ericsson-cycle magnetic refrigeration.

Abstract:Magnetic refrigeration technology based on the magnetocaloric effect provides an optimal replacement for conventional refrigeration technology. However, an efficient approach to developing superior magnetic refrigeration materials to satisfy practical requirements is still lacking. Here, a feasible approach to develop magnetic refrigeration materials with a superior magnetocaloric effect is designed. Based on this screening rule, the 23 rare-earth-based compounds with inverse perovskite structures were revealed in space group Pm 3 ̅ m (No. 221). The First principle calculations are used to predict the magnetism, and electronic structure of candidate compounds, and there are 13 rare earth-based compounds in the candidate materials that have a ferromagnetic magnetic ground state. The Er3SnC, Ho3SnC, Gd3SnC, and Gd3AlC compounds were realized, and the magnetism, magnetocaloric effects were investigated. The experimental results demonstrate that the magnetic ground states of the prepared compounds are in agreement with theoretical predictions. The Er3SnC, Ho3SnC and Gd3SnC compounds with ferromagnetic states exhibit superior magnetocaloric effects.

Abstract:<p>Most existing room temperature magnetic refrigeration (MR) prototypes are based on the concept of an active magnetic regenerator (AMR). However, for these MR prototypes, three obstacles, i.e. theoretical limit of the MR thermodynamic cycle, low operating frequency, and large irreversible loss during heat regeneration, limit the enhancement of their temperature span and cooling capacity, and further restrict their commercial application. In this paper, the solutions to these obstacles are reviewed from the perspectives of MR thermodynamic cycles and heat transfer enhancement during heat regeneration. With respect to MR cycles, the future trend is likely to be fully solid-state MR cycle and multi-caloric refrigeration cycle. With regard to heat transfer enhancement, the three methods exhibit good practical prospects, namely using liquid metals or nanofluids as the heat transfer fluid, shaping a magnetocaloric material (MCM) into an enhanced heat transfer structure, and inserting materials with high thermal conductivity in the MCM. Moreover, room-temperature MR applications in the cold-storage device, heat pump and electric vehicle air conditioning are reviewed. Small cooling capacity devices are the primary application targets of room-temperature MR, such as the wine cooler, domestic dehumidifier, and portable personal air conditioning.</p>

Abstract:In the pursuit of a clean and environmentally friendly future, magnetic refrigerator technology based on the magnetocaloric effect is proposed as a replacement for conventional refrigeration technologies characterized by inefficient energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, and ozone depletion. This paper presents an in-depth exploration of the current state of research on Magnetocaloric Effect (MCE) materials, examining various types of MCE materials and their respective potentials. The focus is particularly directed towards perovskite manganite materials due to their numerous advantages over other materials. These advantages include a wide working temperature range, easily adjustable Curie temperature around room temperature, excellent chemical stability, cost-effective production processes, negligible magnetic and thermal hysteresis properties, as well as competitive values for -ΔS M and ΔT ad compared to other materials. Additionally, crucial parameters defining the MCE properties of perovskite manganite materials are discussed comprehensively, both at a fundamental level and in detail.

Abstract:The magnetocaloriceffect is considered as an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly technique which can take cooling technology to the next level. Apart from its commercial application at room temperature, magnetic refrigeration is an up-and-coming solution for the cryogenic regime, especially as an alternative to He3 systems. Molecular magnets reveal advantageous features for ultra-low cooling which are competitive with intermetallic and lanthanide alloys. Here, we present a guide to the current status of magnetocaloric effect research of molecular magnets with a theoretical background focused on the inverse magnetocaloric effect and an overview of recent results and developments, including the rotating magnetocaloric effect.

Abstract:The criteria for selecting refrigerant materials for a magnetic refrigerator in the temperature range from 4.2 K to 300 K have been studied. First, by assuming the molecular field approximation, we calculated the magnetic entropy SM (T, H) of a typical 3-dimensional ferromagnetic substance near the Curie temperature as a function of temperature and magnetic field strength. In order to prove the validity of the above theoretical results, the magnetocaloric effects of Cr3Te4 and Gd near the room temperature have been investigated experimentally. Comparison between the calculated and experimental results confirms that they are in good agreement. Second, by using the Debye approximation, the temperature variation of the lattice entropy SL (T) as a function of the Debye temperature is clarified. Using the above SM (T, H) and SL (T), the temperature and magnetic field dependences of the calculated total entropy of several typical ferromagnets are obtained. In view of the above results we have discussed several criteria which should be satisfied by a magnetic refrigerant to be used near room temperature.

Abstract:This work presents a review of research work on the magnetic refrigerator, of which different research is presented. The principle of magnetic refrigeration at room temperature and its interests has been shown. The phase transitions, first-order and second-order, have been shown with the advantages and disadvantages of both. Indeed, the first-order materials benefit from high magnetic entropy and adiabatic temperature change. Their negative point consists in their great magnetic hysteresis. It is quite the opposite for second-order phase transition materials. An overview of existing materials and characterization of magnetocaloric effect have been explained.
A Brilliant Magnetic Refrigerant Operating Near Liquid Helium Temperature: Enhanced Magnetocaloric Effect in Ferromagnetic EuTi0.75Al0.125Zr0.125O3

Abstract:Theoretical calculations and experiments demonstrate a dominance of ferromagnetism in EuTi0.75Al0.125Zr0.125O3. Lattice expansion and altered electronic interactions contribute to the ferromagnetic behavior and lead to a significantly enhanced magnetocaloric effect. The remarkable magnetocaloric parameters of −ΔSMmax (18.9 J kg−1 K−1), RC (77.7 J kg−1), and maximum adiabatic temperature change ΔTadmax (7.4 K) for μ0ΔH = 0−1 T make it a brilliant refrigerant operating near liquid helium temperature. Rare earth‐based perovskites have become an attractive research interest in the field of cryogenic magnetic refrigerants due to their unique advantages in practical applications. The remarkable magnetocaloric effect (MCE) renders EuTiO3 a potential magnetic refrigerant in the liquid helium temperature range. More impressively, the tunability between antiferromagnetism (AFM) and ferromagnetism (FM) provides the feasibility of tailoring the magnetism and enhancing the magnetocaloric performance. In this study, the magnetism of EuTi0.75Al0.125Zr0.125O3 is investigated in depth through first‐principles calculations and experimental methods. Both theoretical calculations and experimental results reveal that it exhibits significant ferromagnetism due to the AFM‐FM magnetic transition promoted by the co‐substitution of Al and Zr. Lattice expansion and altered electronic interactions are responsible for the FM behavior, which leads to a significant enhancement of the MCE. With the field change of 0−1 T, the peak values of magnetic entropy change (−ΔSM), refrigerating capacity (RC), and adiabatic temperature change (ΔTad) reach 18.9 J kg−1 K−1, 77.7 J kg−1, and 7.4 K, respectively. More surprisingly, the values of maximum magnetic entropy change (−ΔSMmax ) and maximum adiabatic temperature change ΔTadmax for EuTi0.75Al0.125Zr0.125O3 reach 11.4 J kg−1 K−1 and 3.7 K under the field change of 0−0.5 T, respectively. The remarkable magnetocaloric performance proves it to be a brilliant magnetic refrigerant operating near liquid helium temperature.

Abstract:Magnetic refrigeration (MR) research has been increasingly focused on targeting operation temperatures as low as 4.4–20 K, which is of strategic significance for liquid helium and hydrogen in various activities such as aerospace and highly advanced industries. To date, despite most research has been aimed at obtaining MR materials with large magnetic entropy change and adiabatic temperature change, the optimizing operation temperature to target the cooling range for helium-hydrogen liquefaction is highly desirable and valuable. Here, the significant enhancement in magnetocaloric effects (MCEs) and magnetic materials operating in the temperature range of 4.4–20 K are achieved. The magnetic properties and MCEs of HoCuAl are manipulated by substituting Er or Tm atoms with the lower de Gennes factor and various magnetic anisotropy. The maximum magnetic entropy change ((−Δ S M ) max ) and refrigeration capacity (RC) under 0–5 T for Ho 0.9 Er 0.1 CuAl increases by 25.8 % and 39.8 % respectively compared with HoCuAl compound. Additionally, the critical role of Curie temperature and magnetic anisotropy in the significant enhancement of MCEs is confirmed by the systematic macroscopic physical analysis and neutron diffraction measurements. The excellent MCEs, suitable operation temperature, and free of hysteresis loss demonstrate the promising application prospect in liquefaction of helium-hydrogen.

Abstract:The achievement of good magnetocaloric performances is reported in the Mn30Fe20‐xCuxAl50 alloys with a stable cubic CsCl‐type structure which are derived from the family of MnAl‐based permanent magnets. These alloys represent a rare case of magnetocaloric materials that can be fabricated from low‐price, earth‐abundant, and non‐toxic elements, which could provide new choices for room‐temperature refrigeration. Magnetic refrigeration technology based on the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of magnetic substances has been considered a prominent, energy‐efficient, and environmentally benign cooling method. Exploring suitable magnetic substances is a prerequisite for practical applications. A family of rare‐earth‐free magnetocaloric materials called Mn30Fe20−xCuxAl50 alloys is identified room‐temperature refrigeration, which are derived from the well‐known MnAl‐based permanent magnets. As expected from experimental and theoretical investigations, all of the Mn30Fe20−xCuxAl50 alloys are crystallized in a stable cubic CsCl‐type crystal structure, revealing a single second‐order type magnetic phase transition (MPT) with tunable MPT temperature. They also exhibit a large reversible MCE and good magnetocaloric performances in a wide temperature range. Crucially, these Mn30Fe20−xCuxAl50 alloys represent a rare case of magnetic materials belonging to a large family that can be fabricated from low‐price, earth‐abundant, and non‐toxic elements. They could provide new choices for practical room‐temperature magnetic refrigeration applications.
