Abstract:5 GHz non-return zero (NRZ) optical pulses were generated by employing a Ti:LiNbO3 amplitude modulator. The optical pulses were measured by a second harmonic auto-correlator. The key technology was theoretically and experimentally studied.

Abstract:The generation of high repetition rate (3～5 order harmonic of the RF modulation frequency at 2 5 GHz), amplitude equalized pulses directly from rational harmonic mode locked fiber ring laser is demonstrated by using the nonlinear transfer characteristics of LN MZI amplitude modulator. The theoretical analysis explains the experimental results well.

Abstract:We demonstrate that optical microfibers integrated in Yb-doped fiber lasers boost broadband noise-like pulse (NLP) generation via dispersion and nonlinearity management, with an optical spectrum spanning from below 1000 nm to beyond 1600 nm when the diameter of the optical microfiber is 1.2 µm. Numerical simulations show that dispersion and nonlinearity management provided by the optical microfiber is responsible for the broadband NLP generation. Furthermore, it is shown experimentally that dispersion and nonlinearity management via optical microfibers can also bring the highest optical rogue waves along with the broadest optical spectrum.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate 10-Gb/s format conversion from non-return-to-zero (NRZ) to alternate-mark-inversion (AMI) using the linear filtering effect of silicon microring resonator. Our discussion and analysis in simulation further show that a 10-Gb/s AMI signal with good quality can be obtained by a resonator with a notch depth larger than 25 dB when the 3-dB bandwidth is 0.4 nm.

Abstract:NRZ to RZ conversion was achieved based on the nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM). The ultra-short optical pulse generated by gain-switched distributed feedback diode laser (GS DFB-LD) was used as the control light, the mode-locked laser was used as the signal source. The experimental results showed that the pulse width of the converted signal was narrower than that of the control pulse. The optical pulse with the repetitive frequency of 20 GHz was achieved using the technology of time-division multiplexing.

Abstract:A new technique to generate 40-GHz carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CSRZ) optical pulse trains using only a 10-GHz dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) is presented and experimentally demonstrated.The spectrum of the generated CSRZ pulses is calculated by simulation and compared with conventional MZM-based RZ and CSRZ pulse trains.The experimental results demonstrate that CSRZ pulse trains are obtained, and that the carrier and the unwanted 20-GHz low-frequency component are suppressed by 25 dB.The technique can also be extended to 160-GHz CSRZ pulse generation when 40-GHz devices are employed.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a novel and simple method to generate a dark return-to-zero (RZ) pulse with tunable pulsewidth and extinction ratio by using a dual-arm LiNbO3 intensity modulator. Our experimental results show that this dark RZ pulse signal can be used in a 10-Gb/s optical packet switching system as an optical label. In addition, we demonstrate that this dark RZ label can be easily erased using the gain saturation effect in a semiconductor optical amplifier.

Abstract:Optical regenerative nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) to return-to-zero (RZ) format conversion using a lithium niobate phase modulator and a lithium niobate intensity modulator is proposed and demonstrated. The key advantage of the proposed format converter is that the converted RZ signal has a very small pulse width, which can be multiplexed to a higher bit rate using optical time division multiplexing technology. The operation can greatly reduce the timing jitter of the degraded NRZ signal due to the regenerative property of the proposed scheme. Besides, the format converter can also support multi-channel operation. An experiment is performed with the feasibility of the scheme demonstrated.

Abstract:A 640 Gbit/s NRZ OTDM signal has been successfully generated for the first time by format conversion of a 640 Gbit/s OTDM signal from RZ to NRZ. First, a coherent 640 Gbit/s OTDM RZ signal is generated by wavelength conversion of the original incoherent OTDM signal utilizing Kerr switching in a highly nonlinear fiber. Second, RZ-to-NRZ format conversion is achieved in a specially designed silicon microring resonator with FSR of 1280 GHz, Q value of 638, high extinction ratio and low coupling loss to optical fiber. A 640 Gbit/s NRZ OTDM signal with very clear eye-diagram and narrower bandwidth than both the original incoherent 640 Gbit/s and the wavelength converted coherent 640 Gbit/s RZ OTDM signals has been obtained. Bit error ratio measurements show error free (<10(-9)) performance at a received power of -30 dBm for all the OTDM channels of the 640 Gbit/s NRZ signal, with very low power penalty (<0.5 dB) and improved dispersion tolerance compared to the wavelength converted RZ case.

Abstract:Wavelength conversion of short pulses at 10 GHz based on a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) is experimentally and numerically investigated for the case of small group velocity dispersion and walkoff between the control pulses and continuous lightwaves. Experimental and numerical simulation results show that the pulsewidths of the converted signals at different wavelengths are almost the same, and the pulsewidths are compressed when the peak power of the control pulse is smaller than a certain value. An RZ optical source containing eight wavelengths having a high sidemode suppression ratio, equal amplitudes and almost the same pulsewidths is obtained by using wavelength conversion in a NOLM consisting of a common dispersion shifted fiber. 10 Gb/s NRZ wavelength conversion based on the NOLM is demonstrated for the first time and certain conclusions in some of the references are confirmed by our experimental results.

Abstract:A high-power single-frequency 1178 nm continuous-wave laser is generated in a two-stage stimulated-Brillouin-scattering-suppressed all-polarization-maintaining Raman fiber amplifier pumped by 1120 nm fiber lasers. A polarization-extinction-ratio of 30 dB is achieved due to the all-polarization-maintaining configuration and the polarization dependence gain of Raman scattering. Single-pass frequency doubling with a homemade periodically poled near-stoichiometric LiT alpha O-3 crystal (PPSLT) produces an up to 7 W narrow-linewidth laser at 589 nm. The thermally induced dephasing effect is found to be the key issue for improving second-harmonic efficiency. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate the generation of a 10-Gb/s return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (RZ-DPSK) signal based on a directly modulated chirp-managed laser (CML), without requiring any differential encoder and optical phase modulator (PM). It shows better fiber chromatic dispersion tolerance and comparable nonlinearity tolerance, compared with a LiNbO PM-based RZ-DPSK signal using 2(31) - 1 pseudo-random bit sequence data.

Abstract:A stable 10 GHz pedestal-free short pulse generation scheme consisting of cascaded commercial LiNbO3 modulators has been proposed and successfully demonstrated experimentally. Fiber-based pulse compression and reshaping stages have been utilized to obtain a 1.38 ps optical pulse train with very little pedestal and 132 fs timing jitter. Excellent performance of multiplexing from 10 Gbits/s to 160 Gbits/s using this method indicates good potential for application in ultrahigh-speed optical time-division-multiplexing systems. Abstract:A 10-Gb/s all-optical format conversion from nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) to carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CSRZ) and conversion between return-to-zero (RZ) and CSRZ are demonstrated, in this letter, using a semiconductor optical amplifier-based fiber loop mirror. The converter utilizes a control light composed of a 5-GHz sinusoidal optical clock signal and a continuous-wave light. The optical power ratio of the control light is optimized to obtain proper phase modulation for high performance format conversion. The power penalty of the proposed format converter is measured for NRZ to CSRZ, RZ to CSRZ, and CSRZ to RZ conversions. In NRZ to CSRZ conversion, the dynamic range of the input NRZ signal power is also investigated.

Abstract:The wavelength of 2.5 Gbit/s RZ optical pulse is successfully converted over 20 nm based on nonlinear optical loop mirror. With PRBS of 223-1, the bit error rate is 1.3×10-14 at the optimal conversion after one hour error measurement. The widths of the initial signal optical pulse and the probe optical pulse are 28 ps and 37 ps, and the related center wavelengths are 1533 nm and 1553 nm, respectively.

Abstract:Two-channel wavelength conversion for 2.5 Gbit/s, return-to-zero optical pulse was achieved by use of nonlinear optical loop mirror. The maximum separation between the control laser wavelength and the signal laser wavelength is 35 nm. In this system, GS DFB-LD is used as the control pulse with the pulse width of 20 ps, while DFB-LD and wavelength tunable laser are used as signal lasers. The phase wavelength conversion and pulse degradation were observed for first time at the wavelength of 1.550 μm.

Abstract:The wavelength conversion of 2.5 Gbit/s non return-to-zero optical pulse based on cross-gain modulation in semiconductor optical amplifier is demonstrated. The separation for up-conversion is larger than 10 nm, and down-conversion is larger than 20 nm. The relationship between the receiver power and bit error rate is shown. The co-propagation wavelength conversion is used in this experiment. The signal wavelength is fixed, the probe optical signal is extra-cavity laser with the tunable wavelength. No bit error is observed after a measurement of more than one hour, which will be useful in the application of WDM optical networks.
